    You guys are such an amazing and powerful couple. I love your work, your videos and your warm spirit. What I love most is that you are Christians, you're not afraid to speak about your faith and you're trying to help other cake artists like me. You hit on alot of good points. I need to internalize everything you spoke about and believe that God did give me this talent to share with others. I need to stop being afraid, claim my business and start praising him now for my success. Please keep up the good work and keep these videos coming. You guys are such a blessing and I love watching you.

      Thank you so much Tamika! We appreciate your kind words. Yes we are Christians and we give God all the glory. Yes, in order to be successful Cake Artists there needs to be no fear. That is the key! Always thank God in advance for your success, for your clients, and for your talent. Thanks again and we look forward to hearing more from you in our future videos. God bless you!

    I was barely 5 min into this video and I started crying. It means so much to have a "mentor" in this industry as I'm starting off and I feel like this is what this video provided me. I often feel lost in a sea of techniques and requirements and pricing and services that I start to doubt myself. Thank you so much for the encouragement and the advice. So, so very appreciated. This video gave me the boost to keep going to really go after my dream.

    I have been watching your videos for awhile now but this one is now my favorite. I love your character. Both of you. The fact that you don't have to be mean, ugly, deceitful, or dishonest to succeed like so many people believe. My motto: Pray like it depends on God but work like it depends on you. Putting Him first is how my Bakery has made it this far!

    I remember once I felt guilty about my "overpriced" carousel cake that I slaved over, and I mean blood sweat and tears. I delivered the cake and the the client told me how she paid double for what my cake was worth in SEAT COVERS. It's true what you said. Thank you for these wonderful videos, they're a blessing. I was about to quit cakes but it's truly my passion! Sending love from Chicago! And thank you

    I was in the middle of such thoughts about my bakery business and prices ...... and this morning while in the bathroom I saw this video of yours!!! And all the issues you are explaining, just the right thing in the right time - when I needed it from people who have experience!! And I also your words about God guiding us to the right clients and helping to develop the talents he gave us.... OMG is this possible!!! Your video is just an answer of my prayers!!! Thank you so much guys!
    I have all these problems you are explaining and othe people where searching to be answered. Lately I made a great birthday cake with cupcakes and cake pops themed Hello Kitty for a relative of mine. When other guests saw it they were amazed and want to order the same. So I was wondering how much to charge. It took me many hours to make all the miniatures I put on the this cake and when I think of all cake pops in the shape of Hello Kitty where I made each eye, nose, whisker out of fondant..... I think I could never charge enough yet I am not comfortable to ask for a fair price. I do think they will change their mind when I they hear the price.
    But anyway, as you said, why should I give away such beautiful cakes and this amount of working hours to somebody who doesn't even appreciate it, especially not to them.
    I don't want clients because of my low price, but because of my work.
    Thank you for your videos and I am looking forward to watching more from you.
    God bless you!!!!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Svetlana! I'm so happy these videos came to you at the right time! You NEED to GET comfortable with charging correctly for your work. If you don't you'll undercharge yourself and won't feel comfortable with yourself. If they change their mind when hearing the price, then they are NOT YOUR CLIENT. Why would you want to serve people who should not BE your clients? Just look at it that way. :) You are very welcome and thanks for participating in this series! :)

    If you have not taken the "Cake Pricing Webinar", you have no idea what you are missing!!! I just took it a couple of days ago and it was one of the best informative class you can take regarding your business. Be prepared to take notes and please ask questions! Laura is so good about answering them and no question is a dumb question!!! This is where I say: "Laura, you need to charge more for this class!" Love you!

    pricing is definitely the area I struggle in, I just met a wedding planner who was so excited to meet me, knowing I was a home based baker, before knowing anything about my cakes though, she stated "this is great, alot of my brides are on tight budgets and are looking for cakes that are cheaper, and you have no overhead!" umm🤐🤐🤐🤐I didn't know exactly how to respond to that, but I didn't give her my card.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +9

      Then you need to just be straight with her and tell her, "My work is not cheap. I'm happy to work with someone's budget, but they will receive what they pay for. I would appreciate it if when you speak with your brides, and my "potential customers' that you do not refer to me as a a cake lady that makes "cheap cakes", rather a Cake Artist that created quality beautiful and artistic custom cakes that are worth every penny". YOU Tina need to SET THE STANDARD and YOU dictate to others how YOU want to be "referred" as. If she continues to label you that way then I would recommend to RUN in the opposite direction. That woman is just going to give you a bad reputation and cause problems for your business. Plus remember, you DON'T NEED a wedding planner to make your business successful. We NEVER work with wedding planners and it has not affected our business one bit. Good for you for NOT giving her your card. :)

    Hi guys, I am from Trinidad and Tobago and I am amazed that my issues are the same as everyone who start a cake business. As cake artists we truly need to introduce customers to the amazing work that we produce and raise them above the grocery store cake.
    As I learn and improve, I truly want to give my clients the best and it feels so good to see someone show pride in the cakes that you have provided to them. I look forward to what you are about to do for us. Great job!

    I had a few say your expensive. They thought I was making cakes as if they were from Walmart etc. but once they saw the details and the work that went into it they came back and would pay what I charged. I have a full time job and did yes did cakes when I got home and on weekends. It just became too much and I had to stop. I do love it will only do cakes for my family now... I love your videos!

    I love this series!!! a big hello from NZ - I have been in that horrible 'do I' 'don't i' state of mind for 2-3YEARS as to whether I take the plunge, become registered and go full throttle on the cake world.... terrifying, but I have decided for my own sanity I need to at least try. there are a lot of decorators in my area, and I have some fresh ideas to set me apart but that fear of it not working is always there, sigh. But i have worked really hard on my pricing, and I need to expand/have more orders to capitalise on my time as one cake start to finish takes 3hours, but 2-5 cakes would only add time at the decorating end! love your work, cant wait for next weeks episode :)

      Hi Danielle! I know exactly what you're going through. It sounds like how I felt when I was about to quit my teaching job to dedicate myself 100% to my business. It's okay to be afraid, but do what you need to do even if you have to do it afraid. Very important to not let the fear control us and stop us from fulfilling our dreams. Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!

    Love you both! This video has been an eye opener. The first time I got a big order the client asked for a discount (because she didn't have enough money) and I gave her it, I ended up tired of all the work I put on those cakes and I really made no money off them, she was even asking if I rented cake stands (and I thought to myself she said she had no money, and is asking to rent cake stads whaaat?). Next time same client asked for a price of a bigger cake and was expecting the same treatment, but I gave her the full price and didn't give her any discount, she ended up not ordering. That was the first time I rejected a client and felt good, felt good giving myself some value.
    I still do mess up sometimes with the pricing and undervaluate myself but I'm learning. And now with these kind of videos you are making, it's giving me the courage to go forward and choose my clients more wisely and put real value on my work. Thanks a ton!

    Your tip on pricing our cakes is great. Your advise is what we know, but are afraid to own / admit. We know what it costs us to make our cakes and how much we need to charge to make a profit. The question we need to answer is how much do we want to earn at the end of it all.

      You are more than welcome Roxanne. We mean every word. :) The more YOU put yourself "out there", the more your business will be visible to the public. Advertise in your local yellow pages, have a website, FB page, IG, Twitter, etc. Make sure all of your social media are interconnected so people can EASILY find you online. Give your business cards and pass them out to EVERYONE. Don't ever hold back when it comes to talking to people about your business EVERYWHERE you go! You can't be shy at all. Arnie is our BIGGEST promoter. We get TONS of orders every year just because he talks to people about the business EVERYWHERE he goes. He carries lots of business cards with him AND he has tons of photos of our work on his phone and shows them off to everyone! We always get the same response, "WOW! I didn't know we had anyone in our city that could make cakes like that!" You do the same and you just watch your business explode. We get inspired just by seeing our progress, PLUS, we KNOW that with God's help we can do ANYTHING. Things don't always run perfectly when having your own cake business, but as long as you allow your faith in God guide you, you will NEVER fail. Discouragement is a part of life, but it's important not to stay discouraged. Feel it for a little while if you have to, but then you encourage yourself and you REMIND yourself of WHO you are and the fact that you have a PURPOSE in this life. Don't ever compare yourself to any other Cake Artists. God made you and your work 100% unique. They'll never be another Cake Artist like you. You just focus on your own work and your own skills and you'll see very quickly that you have your own "niche" and your own "style". God bless you Roxanne! Trust God always. :)

    Great job you all!!! I turn away soooooo many people it's ridiculous. But, that's also why I have more free time on my hands and that's why I'm also practicing and doing lots of research. So, thank you it was very encouraging and so uplifting to know I'm not alone. And to also know I'm not insane for charging what I charge! 💞💕❤️😘👍🏻

    Hi, Your video is very helpful, I am a home baker, and I bake for my friends and family. Everyone are insisting me to start a business but I am little doubtful about what skills I have is enough to start a business. When i baked for people outside ( just twice) i can see them expecting a big cake for very low price. Few ask the price, discuss everything and never calls back. I know to deal with fondant and modelling chocolate, and i always wanted to make yummy cakes from scratch, so i make fondant, modelling chocolate by myself. I learnt everything through RUclips and tried everything to check if I can make it. Still I feel little intimidated. My husband tells me every time to charge for my work and if people says its costly he say just leave them. I am learning to be confident. So very initial stage of starting business where should I focus. PLEASE HELP ME

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Prathima! It's very important that when you decide to begin to your cake business, you do it because you want to. not because of others are trying to convince you to have a cake business. If only two people have turned down the opportunity to order from you, then that is not enough to keep you from doing it. When you have your own cake business you'll have a lot more people not to want to order from you. But, remember like we said in this video, that's okay. I totally agree with your husband. If they don't want to pay, just leave them. Grow your confidence and your cake business will grow as well! I wish you the best. God bless you!

    The info in this video is very helpful. One issue I would love for you to touch on is dealing with cakes and family/friends. I am a home baker and starting out I only baked for family and friends until I built my skill set to sell cakes to the public. I've done it, but it took a while for me to tell the people closest to me NO more free cakes. They don't seem to understand the money and time that goes into creating these custom cakes.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you Erica! I'm glad it has helped you. Dealing with friends and family in our cake business is always one of the most difficult things. You are on the right track by choosing to no longer make cakes for friends and family. Or at least not free cakes. Very few friends and family members will "understand". 99.9% of the time they're "not understanding" will be out of convenience. That's when you have to decide whether to completely stop or not. If you take your business seriously, you really won't have the time to make cakes for friends and family. Definitely not for free. You just got a rip it off like a band aid. I hope that helps Erica!

    Thank you again for you videos and I'm thrilled to stay tuned in to this new series! My question for the next video: Do you feel like it's important to have a well developed portfolio of things you've made before really pricing fully? How robust should this portfolio be? I spent a lot of time in the past just making cakes and cupcakes for friends and family and honestly didn't document even a quarter of them. Now that I'm starting down the path of charging and establishing a business, how do I create a portfolio as proof of my talent? Thank you!!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      You're VERY welcome Imilla! Thank you for taking part in this series! What a wonderful question! In a nutshell, you don't need to have an extensive portfolio before you are pricing fully and correctly. You can start charging what you should be charging from cake #1. Remember, it is YOUR time and YOUR work. You need to be paid for that. The time to start charging "fully" as you put it, is NOW. To develop your portfolio, it's important to take quality photos of your work. Which is not at all hard to do. Solid clean background and a decent camera and voila! I hope hat helps! :)

    Thank You Thank you so much for all the great advice, encouragement and uplifting❤️ My friends and family love my cakes and I love to make them... however I lack the confidence. I need to believe in myself more. My husband is my number one supporter always pushing me to believe in myself. My question is how to charge when it comes to family and friends? Thanks so much again for taking the time to help😊

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      You're very welcome Gabriel! It's our pleasure! Yes you do need to believe in yourself more and more! We've charged friends and family the same exact way as we do regular clients. That's when we did cakes for them. We rarely do it now. The work you do for friends and family is not less, so why charge less? Now, if you WANT to give them a discount out of the kindness of your own heart, that's fine, but just remember that they'll always EXPECT that in the future. So you need to decide not only what you should do NOW, but more importantly, what your decisions NOW will bring and cause in the future. If you don't like giving away your time and work, then I would recommend not doing cakes for free for friends and family, and seriously consider charging them as a regular client. If they get upset, offended, or displeased with you, then that'll just show you that they really don't respect you and your time and what they were interested in all along was just to take advantage of you. If they truly LOVE and RESPECT you, they would NEVER expect you to do it for free. I hope that helps Gabriel! If you choose to not do cakes for friends and family anymore, then stick to your decision and do it quick. You have to just rip it off like a bandaid! :)

    Hello from Brisbane, Australia! Thank you so much for these videos, honestly it couldn't be more timely. I'm told and read that the cupcakes and cakes are a saturated market. If only 10-20% ppl end up being our clients how do we increase our client base so we get the lion's share of that 10-20%?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Jimmy Lee! You are very welcome! The "saturation" myth is just that, a myth. Not at all saturated, and especially not with professional and quality Cake Artists. LOTS of "cake ladies" out there as I'd like to call them, but we need to set ourselves apart from the common "cake lady". We want to be considered Cake Artists and the quality of the work dictates the caliber of client we are wanting. That being said, the "artistic quality" and professionalism we display will allow us to take a bigger chunk of the 10-20%. It takes just a few really good quality clients to make a successful cake business. Plus, THOSE clients are the ones that bring the great referrals, and that's how your business will grow. :)

  • @canadianmasraya332
    @canadianmasraya332 5 лет назад

    Love this series!! Thank you for all the info!! I’m sorry if you already covered this and I somehow just missed it, but would you consider “special cake fillings” in your base price as well? For example, if the client wants raspberries or lemon curd as fillings do you just include that as part of a basic price? Or do you add that as an extra and just include buttercream as a base filling?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Glad you are enjoying it! You are VERY welcome! If "special cake fillings" are a common thing you do, then you definitely want to have that price worked into your "base price". However, if those special fillings are only sometimes, or once in a while, then figure out the cost of the cake with your base price technique and then just add the cost of the filling to the price. Of course don't forget to add extra cost if necessary if it will cost YOU investing time in obtaining or making this special filling. I hope that helps my friend and thank you for watching! :)

  • @CharissaHarewood
    @CharissaHarewood 7 лет назад +2

    Thank you so much for starting this new series. When I started putting out menus of what I offer people would continuously be asking for samples. I've always been conflicted by this. Is it wise for me to give out samples of my cakes and desserts every time I put out a menu and hope that someone buys. Or should I just leave it as - with pictures of my work and what I offer along with corresponding prices. I feel like I may end up making cakes and desserts for free basically if I'm always absorbing the cost of making these desserts and then giving them away as samples. I think of it like going to a restaurant and ordering off a menu- you don't ask to sample the stuff before buying (at least where I live anyway: Trinidad). You go based on the pictures and decide if you want to purchase. Am I doing the right thing by sifting out who my real customers are? I would love to have more customers but I just can't bring myself to make my cakes and desserts and then give them away like that. What if I do and then they still don't purchase.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      You're VERY welcome Charissa! It's not wise to give away samples. Not at all cost effective. Especially when it comes to cake tastings (if they're necessary) you want to definitely charge. It all comes down to not working for free and making sure you're being paid for your time. I also am weary of putting prices next to photos of our work. It's generally not a good idea. But if you have a bakery and/or a menu as you've mentioned of the same things you make all the time and they have a specific price with no changes, then okay to attach prices to them. You are doing the RIGHT THING by sifting out your clients. That's EXACTLY what we want and need to do. Don't ever give your work away Charissa! :)

    • @CharissaHarewood
      @CharissaHarewood 7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your quick and detailed response. It's more of an online bakery. I started in December of 2016 and I offer custom cakes as well as event table desserts. I started creating themed menus (Christmas, Valentine's, Easter) in the hope of getting more clients for the holiday and by extension growing my business. My family and friends would then share these menus in their offices and online. However, I'm now realizing the downside to attaching the prices to photos of my work. I've also noticed that people question the prices because I'm new. I've read your other responses in the comments and I now have a better understanding of how to promote my work. I will still be posting pictures of my work but I won't post prices and if people really are interested they would contact me. Thanks again for your advice. You guys really are God sent ...you're helping so many people. ♥♥♥

      If you're charging correctly for your work, the amount of money you spend out-of-pocket should hardly even make a dent in your profit. It should be barely noticeable. Hi Alicia! That's an excellent question! You have to first decide what YOU feel one hour of your time is worth. That's step #1. In our online Cake Pricing Webinar I teach Cake Artists how to charge for their cakes depending on the number of servings and the intricacy of the design. But, knowing what your time is worth is step #1. If you haven't yet, be sure to get the Cake Artist's Guide I mention in the video so you can find out what you've actually BEEN making off of your cakes. :)

    I find myself not having enough time in my life to continue my cake business. I started my business 7 months ago and didn't think enough about what I was getting myself into. In the next year I plan on planning for a wedding, building a house, starting a new full time job as a tax accountant (which would require me to work 50-60 hours a week) and I want to start a family and have enough time to enjoy life. I'm starting to regret starting my business because I feel like now I have to quit since I won't have enough time. Do you have any recommendations for me? How do I quit my business?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Yes having a cake business does take a lot of time. When someone wants to really make a go of it, they need to dedicate a lot to time and resources. Is your heart set on being a tax accountant? Or do you enjoy making cakes more than doing taxes? That would be my first question. If you rather spend your life being a tax accountant then just quit the business cold turkey. Quitting is very easy to do. Just don't accept any cake orders. I've quite a few times so I know. LOL. But if your heart is in making cakes, you CAN make more money with your cake business than being a tax accountant. It's all a matter of dedicating the necessary time and making some tough decisions. :) But once they're made, you have the freedom to enjoy your life and take your business where you want it to go.

      Tifani Price i am in here wondering the same thing how do i get more client. It's been 3 years now and i barely get any orders. It's very frustrating and i can not quit my passion.

      Tifani Price most of my clients come from social media and word of mouth. Each time that is post a cake creation I get inboxed and or called and get confirmed orders. This is a great role for family and friends to assist and that's by sharing your work with their friends that you may not have mutually in common. I get a ton of orders from social media with people recommending my services to others and current customers that give great reviewS

      Erica Lee good for you! In the beginning family placed orders but then after a while looked out for "family price" which i think is unfair..am i wrong?? They even buy from other big businesses when am here trying to make it :(
      i do have friends that promote me because they believe in my work.

      Kalida Arndell-gumbs that is so true Khalida! You never find family and friends questioning products of big businesses and you surely won't find them negotiating so why should we allow them to do that to us?

      We buy our foam core boards at local craft stores but you CAN buy them online. We cut them ourselves. God bless! :)

    what if you have a repeat customer and they also refer other customers? How do create that balance?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Autumn! A customer that refers more clients is exactly what we want. But remember that YOU choose whether or not you want to serve those new customers. If they are willing to pay your price, go for it! If not, goodbye! LOL! Don't ever feel obligated to make a cake for someone just because they were referred by another client. :)

    Hello I want to know should I use cake boss software for a home based cake business

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Tonya! I wouldn't recommend using it for figuring out what a Cake Artist should charge for cakes. It has some good points, but overall it is missing some of the most important factors for charging for your work. You can keep track of your profit, expenses, stock, etc. by just being organized and getting good at bookkeeping. If you're unsure, I would rather you just "try it" so you can see for yourself how it falls short from what we're teaching in these videos. :) I however wouldn't spend the $ on it.

      Karla González just Google cake serving chart and it will give you general serving sizes. Gets a little trickier with carved type cakes

    how i can do to bring morw clients to my busisness?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Great question Karla! I think we'll be covering this in next Monday's video. Here was my response from a comment above: "Do you have a website that clients can visit and do you advertise with Yellow Pages for your city? It definitely PAYS to pay a little extra to make sure your business listing with yellow pages appears at the top of the page. Make sure you are included in several categories and not just cakes. Things such as catering, party rentals, bakeries, custom cakes, wedding cakes, wedding planners, etc. Think of all the categories that may somehow lead to a cake and ask yellow pages to put you in those categories as well. Hand out business cards to EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE you go. YOU are the biggest promoter for your business. Arnie is excellent at doing this and we get tons of orders this way. We'll talk more about this in an upcoming video." :)

    How about the customers want to undercut you in pricing by proving there own ingredients for there cakes or the ones who want to provide there own cakes for you to decorate.

      Marilyn Bradley "I'm so sorry, but I would be violating health code standards by doing that, and I take food safety very seriously! I'd be happy to bake a cake for you, though! You're really paying for my time and expertise anyway, so that really wouldn't lower the price much, even if I could" ...or something along those lines. Say it cheerfully and confident that they will understand. 👍😊

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Marilyn! Oh my Lord! That is just BEYOND ridiculous for clients to "attempt" to do that. If they're going to do that then they should just make their own cake. LOL. Don't ever entertain foolish conversations with clients such as those. Nip them in the bud INSTANTLY. Remember YOU are the business owner. It's YOUR WAY or they are NOT your client. Period! Let's put our foot down from the get go! Thanks for watching! :)

    Que tu haces cuando tu cliente te dice que bizcocho estavas bien seco y el sabol es diferente, cuando uno sabe no es haci. que tu haces, le de buerbes el dinero patras? He is so funny!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Nomas porque alguna persona "no le gusto" el sabor, no es razón suficiente para regresarles el dinero. Si realmente no le gusto, nomas pídele disculpa y claro no esperes que vuelvan a ordenar. También es muy importante asegurar que los pasteles que estas haciendo realmente sean buenos. Prueba todo lo que haces. Si a ti no te gusta, o nomas piensas que esta "mas o menos", también los demás pensaran lo mismo. :)
