    Just a few days ago I had a neighbor invite me to his new wife's b-day bbq (3 days before the party) I asked if I should bring the potato salad or coleslaw he said, "well, I was hoping you'd do the cake, no one bakes cakes like you! She loved those real looking roses you did on that wedding cake." I felt like I couldn't say no but decided to try something so I went over to their house the next day and said, "Hey Bob, my kitchen sink is clogged and backing into my bathtub. Could you please fix it for me?" He said, "What would you do if you didn't have a neighbor who's a plumber? Do that." So yeah..... Bob will be ordering his new wife's cake from a bakery this year though he's upset I didn't tell him sooner as the bakery is charging extra for the "rush" order.

    Lol. Love this topic!!! I once had a cousin ask for a hand drawn cake over $100 with deposit. The day she came to pick it up...lol... she says, " oh it's sooo pretty. My dad said he'll pay you with his income tax!" Lmao!! I looked at her, slid the cake away from her and said that she couldn't take the cake and her deposit was non refundable. Lol. She paid of course, but thought to tell me that she still had to pay the bouncer house and get decorations. I haven't done a cake for her since then. I'm okay with that!!👍🏼

    wow reading all the comments here I just realised I'm very lucky in this subject. My family and friends are the ones that always want to pay more for my cakes! None of them has ever asked for free cakes or discounts, they actually end up giving me more money than I asked lol.

    Hi you guys! thanks for this series it's super helpful! The way I usually handle friends and family is that I offer to make the cake for my sister's and brother's kids with the addition of a few little cousins that I'm close to, free of charge. I don't bring a gift because my cake IS my gift. I'll give them a cake equivalent to the price of a gift that I would have gotten anyway. If that ends up not being good enough OH WELL! 🤑

    • @nancysantiago4999
      @nancysantiago4999 7 лет назад +2

      I gave friends/family and co workers the first free or had them pay for the supplies. The olny time I hear from them is when they want a cake made.

    my own brother does not talk to me. the wife wanted a 5 tier cake and I have them my price. she did not like it so she got someone else to make it. GET THIS... they ended up getting a small 3 tier. and pretty much a fail cake was made. so now I have my brother not talking to me. it's been a yr :(

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +3

      I've read this comment many times now Dora and read it to Arnie as well... It's very sad that your brother would let something so insignificant come between you and him. Very petty stuff. I'm sorry you're going through this. But, what I can tell you is that the best thing for you to do is to FORGIVE. I know you probably already have in your heart. Just love your brother (and his wife, LOL), and be ready to continue your relationship with him (and her) when they are ready to grow up and move forward. Continue to stand firm on your prices. Don't ever compromise for anyone. We support you! :)

    • @DALIMENDOZA
      @DALIMENDOZA 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks Laura and Arnie... there is nothing to forgive because I was hurt but never was mad at him. I was disappointed with her decision but I would never get upset and not talk to my brother over a cake. Every night I do say my prayers and ask God to watch over my family and their families. :) I can never be mad at my brothers or sister. Thank you both. I love following you guys. I have learned ALOT because of you both. I sometimes don't want to share you LOL take care

    Guess I've been fortunate with this topic. My sisters have always been supportive. I've just started, and the first cake I baked was offered to my sister for free for my nieces birthday. However, after she saw it she asked how much it costs and insisted on me charging because it is my time. So now I've baked for all my sisters and they've gotten me used to charging them while given space to experiment. My sisters have also started telling people about the cakes I bake for them and if someone says something about a cake my sisters remind them that they need to have their money ready. I have been very lucky to have such understanding sisters that insisted i get paid for my work. Though my immediate family is very business oriented. Now I'm not afraid to charge because of this wonderful transition. Enjoying your videos. Keep it up. :)

    I have learned to say no. i did a cake the way they asked and did it as a project so i didnt charge. they took it no problem. i did a cake for a family member , i made it how they asked and the first family member came and said oh you made it like mine, being kinda rude. i just said no its totally different. they all want it free until you charge then they put you down. so i deceided to say no. it does cost and time consuming. they dont realize. i had a cousin even say " oh i wish i could just stay home and bake cakes". lol. it's a lot of work. i totally agree they have to pay like everyone else no more samples and voluntering to make nothing. smh... thanks for your videos. oh and i didnt get invited to many gatherings or christmas. lol. gotta love family and friends..😂

    I'm never afraid to offend friends or family by telling them I won't do their cake for free or at a discount. They offend ME by assuming that I want to pay for their cake, and take time away from my family to do it. It always starts with a plain and simple cake, and balloons in to this elaborate 5 tier blinged out cake. No thanks.

    I've always loved the friends/ family that order a cake and then throw in, oh and you're invited ( you know, the free delivery ). It's at this time... I usually tell them I have other cakes and I'll try to make it but their cake will be ready on this day.

    • @ToastAndJellyfish
      @ToastAndJellyfish 7 лет назад +2

      Just charge them for the delivery anyway and make sure that charge shows up on their invoice. If they protest, point out that an invitation to a party for someone else is not acceptable compensation for the time and effort it takes to properly transport a cake and do setup on-site. And if they keep complaining, don't take orders from them anymore.

    This is brilliant, I totally understand everything you have said.
    I have friends and family, mostly friends that take me for granted as well.
    I now have decided if you are friends you pay or if it's family the cake I do is the birthday present so, I don't buy a present for the birthday girl/boy, it's cake!
    I'm happy to do this but, when it comes to wedding/anniversary cakes I don't gift them fully. I will give family a good discount and for friends (when I say friends it's only my best/closest friends) a small discount.
    I've lost some customers over time but you know what? It's their loss cos I know after comments I've heard, they won't get a better cake and..... some have come back! 😂
    I have a good few regular customers that understand the price rise and have said they would still buy from me no matter what.

    hi guys, I'm just starting up my cake business. As a way of marketing I've decided to make cakes for a selection of my family and friwnds. I have given this decision thought as I am only selecting those who I feel will promote my business. I've selected young kids, teenagers and those with milestones. Although I've given the cakes for free i will be telling them my retail prices just In case they get asked how much they paid.

    A long time ago I used to be a hairdresser and this topic brings to mind one particular EX ''friend'', she thought it was her right
    to come into my salon on a regular basis and expect extensive and high-cost colour treatments and styling. I don't think it ever registered with her that her hair was costing me double and more by not paying me even for product and taking up an appointment that could have been used for a paying customer. I finally told her I couldn't accommodate her selfishness anymore so she found another hairdresser as my prices were too high for her !!!!!!She couldn't understand why I found that remark so amusing. So glad we're no longer friends as cake making is now my thing !!!

    I’m happy I found you guys... I’m new on the cake Business world ... and to be honest I truly suck on pricing I made a cake for 76 people to my first customer and I charge her $160 I know I’m sooooo A shame for that price but o well I have learn and study so much about the cake world... but when it comes to family they want to take advantage of you I made a nice unicorn cake to my mother in law for free for 30 people but I’m Sure she sold that cake and not tell me same happened with my sister in law I made her a small cake for 16 people and she sold it ahead ... but I have learn my lesson and my time my work and the effort is valuable for now in the will need to pay the full price for a cake like a regular customer... thank you so much for your tips help and advice it has hep me so much

    Hi guys, I'm really trying to get my cake business going and prove my husband that I can really do it this time, so I'm working on new recipes, is it a good idea to give away samples for tasting and feedback? I used to give samples at my work (not cake related business) they will always complement my cake/cupcakes and say they were better than some established businesses, but I have never received an order from them, specifically not after I give them my prices, some even want to tell me how much I should charge them. What should I do? should I keep giving samples?

    • @1tuffcookie689
      @1tuffcookie689 7 лет назад +2

      I did that before..got 1 or 2 orders..with one returning client..but only for the kids bday. I don't give samples anymore.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Dulce! You can do it! Prove it to yourself first ok? Not anyone else. You're the one that needs to be convinced of it before anyone else. :) Don't ever give away samples Dulce... I know a lot of Cake Artists "think" that giving away samples or giving away cakes or the first order is the way to go, but it's not. If people want to sample your cakes, they need to pay for it. Always think about your time and the amount of work you do. I'm a BIG proponent of never working for FREE. Now, if you've decided to participate in a wedding or quinceañera expo for example, then that would be the place to give away small tidbits or miniature cupcakes for people to "taste". But, that's not so much for you to find out "if" they like the flavors, that's just to "draw them in" to your booth. YOU are the best "cake taster" and critic of your own work. Taste everything you make (your hubby too, LOL), and if you both like it, then other people will too. Be sure not to do cake tastings for free either ok? At least that is my suggestion. We'll talk about that in a future video.

    Hi Laura and Arnie! i was telling you in the first video about my cake prices issue..here we charge a cake by the weight (in kilograms) plus an aditional amount depending on the design, if it has a figurine or something that you need to work a lot on..so my question is if you can make an example of pricing a birthday cake or something simple to beggin with..and how do the clients order a cake from you? do they tell you "i want this cake, or a cake for this amount, or for 20, 30 guests"?? Laura perdón si no me entendiste te podría responder mejor en español 😅😘

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Paola! I've spoken with many Cake Artists that do cakes "by the pound" or "por libra". I personally find that a very difficult way to charge because the actual "weight" of the cake shouldn't have much to do with the total cost. But, I do agree with coming up with a price for the cake itself, and then calculating the cost/value of the handmade decorations which is how we charge. When a client is requesting a quote, I ask them what the minimum number of servings required is. But again, the number of servings plays a small role in the total price of the cake, which is why charging by weight is not a "healthy" way to price your cakes. I'd like to invite you Paola to register for our upcoming Cake Pricing Webinar taking place on April 30th. Would love to help you learn how to charge correctly for your cakes. Please register right away ok!? You can find the link to the webinar in the "show more" section underneath our video. :)

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      You're very welcome Josey! We appreciate you watching. The good thing is that you KNOW you tend to procrastinate and it's a bad habit that can cause us to experience a lot of stress and anxiety. Becoming a good "time manager" is an easy decision. I like to break up our tasks into small chunks in the days leading up to the actual baking of the cake. By the time we bake, we've already finished all of the decorations days before and they're already drying and waiting to be placed on the cake. That's the most time consuming factor so I recommend getting decorations out of the way as soon as possible. This is why it's so very important to make sure people order way in advance. Last minute cakes are nothing but stress. :)

    OMG!!! I so love you guys and this series. I must say I have been following you for some years now. I remember last year or maybe the year before that, you said know your worth and charge for it. I am paraphrasing here but you said, Don't be afraid to charge and out of the NO's that you get because you are too expensive, you will eventually get a yes! And I must say that I started charging my worth and didn't feel bad about. Church folk can be the worst to work with which is why I only do business with certain folks from my church. I have had to train my friends and family that it's business nothing personal!
    Thank you for taking the time to help us all with our business. I will be getting my Cottage Bakery Business license in 1 week so this series is right on time for me!

    Hey guys, I am in a predicament. I just recently made a wedding cake for my brother-in-law's wedding. I am still new to the cake business so I didn't ask for a deposit. Long story short, they absolutely loved the cake but they won't pay the price I have requested. (even after a discount. ) I can't help but feeling used, and worthless.
    I need some advice. Please help me.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Alisha! I'm sorry that has happened to you. Those situations are totally avoidable. All you need to do is make sure you always take at least a 1/2 deposit. We always require the balances be paid 2 weeks prior to the date of the event. If they won't pay you what you are requesting, then they are not only taking advantage of you, they are stealing from you... But again, there's really not much you can do about it now. The price should have been agreed upon before the matter, and paid for completely before the wedding as mentioned above. Don't let what someone else is doing to you MAKE YOU "feel worthless". You know you're not. Just because your brother in law doesn't value you or your work, doesn't mean others won't. Just chalk it up as a lesson learned, and don't ever make a cake for them ever again. This is why we always HIGHLY suggest NOT to make cakes for friends or family UNLESS they pay full price. I know this situation is very sad. The best advice I can give you is to just FORGIVE them. They are ignorant and they don't know any better. You do. Be the bigger person and forgive. Later on if they apologize, just thank them for having taught you a HUGE lesson. God bless you Alisha. :)

    Great video series, thanks Laura and Ernie!
    I have two questions, the first one is, how do you handle big orders? I am starting to get more clients and I get nervous when I think of the day when I have multiple and/or big orders at the same time. Do you have any tips/tricks on how you organize yourselves? And the second one is regarding delivery, do you guys deliver your cakes? I work from home and when I tell my clients that they can pick up their cake at my house (because they don't want to pay for delivery,) they show up at whatever time they want (even when they say "I'll be there soon") and I find myself just waiting at home for them to arrive.
    Thank you both so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us, it is a true blessing and I pray that all that you are giving to us be multiplied in your lives! Love, Nataly ❤

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Thank you Nataly! We handle big orders by breaking them up into small tasks. This is the easiest and stress free way to handle a monster of an order. Remember that you decide what orders to take. Don't overdo it as it can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. You CAN handle more than one big order at a time as long as you pace yourself and don't try and do everything at once. That's why it's extremely important to make sure your policy is for clients to order WAY ahead of time so YOU can enjoy your business. Don't get nervous ok? Just mange your time wisely. That's all it takes. Yes, we do deliver all of our cakes. For OUR peace of mind. I want to make sure my cakes arrive in PERFECT condition. We don't charge for delivery. If you are charging correctly for your work the delivery won't make a dent in your profit. However, you definitely CAN charge for delivery if you'd like. Our deliveries are free within the city limits, but we do charge a fee out of town, etc. Always think about YOUR time Nataly. Don't waste your time "waiting around" for people. It's better if you deliver it, set an actual time, and just drop it off and goodbye! LOL. Thank you for the wonderful questions and we'll certainly discuss deliveries in a future video. Would like to invite you to register for our upcoming April 30th Cake Pricing Webinar. We talk about all of those topics and I teach you my fail proof cake pricing techniques that work. Would love to see you in our webinar! :)

      Thank you so much for your response, that is exactly what I will be doing when I start getting big orders, I have a bad habit of taking last minute orders and over do it, but this has to end now. I am so grateful for these videos, they came at a perfect time for me. You're right, I have noticed how much of a difference it makes when I deliver my cakes because I don't have to worry about the rest. The people that have refused to pay the delivery fee were maybe 45-50 minutes away from my house, which is what triggered me to add the fee, otherwise I just take it to their house if they are near me, but my family keeps telling me that I already practically give away my cakes and they get frustrated with me.I have thought about taking the webinar before and haven't actually taken the step to do it but I think this is the time. Thank you, Laura and Arnie, I will sign up for the webinar when I get home from work today and I will see you in the webinar :)

    You're absolutely right. I hope the newer cake artists take your advice. I work in a custom bakery and the owner has been baking for 28 years. We do between 5 and 10 FREE family/friend cakes per month and many of them are 3D cakes. It's a vicious cycle and there's no way to fix it once you get past a certain point. Thankfully, we're the premier custom bakery in a very busy market but those free cakes really take up a lot of time that COULD be used for a paid cake. The owner's daughter could fix it but the owner never will.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      There's always a way to fix it. Situations are never without hope. It's just a matter of making a decision. Doing things differently is a CHOICE. If things stay the same, it's only because people CHOSE to keep doing things the same way. We are not helpless. That owner you speak of has been living in fear for 28 years. That's all... The vicious cycle CAN BE BROKEN. EASILY. It's sad that the bakery your work at is considered the "premier custom bakery". Imagine if you all started charging CORRECTLY how things would change? Wow! Why don't YOU be the one to start the change there? Show them our videos, encourage them, tell them not to doubt and speak fear, and just BELIEVE. Remind them that God didn't give them this talent and this business just to give it away.

      We learn from experience Cynthia. Now you know that nothing is "good to go" until you have been paid for the order first. Don't waste time discussing design, servings, and all of that until you first tell them what the minimum cost will be. If they can't even handle that, then you know not to waste your time. :)

    I am just getting started with cakes and I have learned alot from you both, Laura and Arnie! what are your thoughts on letting the customer (family) buy all of the ingredients, tools, and necessities for the cake they desire and not charging them for time? Of course this is only until I feel like I'm good enough and my skills are perfected and I feel confident enough to charge for my work. I know I'm shortchanging myself but right now I do not feel confident enough in my work to charge for it? Also, is there a way for me to send you pictures of some of my cakes so that maybe you can help me decide whether or not my work is good enough to charge for?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Ashley, Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you feel our videos are helping. Ashley I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that our skills will never be "perfected". If you wait until then to charge for your work, you'll be waiting an eternity. Have the confidence to charge now. I wouldn't recommend giving your work away for free. If you do, it'll be a very bad habit to break later on. Trust me..... Been there, done that. You'll be putting yourself in a situation that will be very difficult to get out of, especially if you're doing cakes for free for friends and family. No matter what your cakes look like Ashley, you should never give your work away for free. I encourage you to charge according to where you feel the professionalism, artistry, and quality of your cakes are right now. I'm certain they are worth more than free? I encourage you to be CONFIDENT. You CAN do it! :)

      Mayra Ortiz it just depends on what you want to pay yourself. I personally break down all my ingredients /price in a cake. Say a 1lb. bag cost $1. Each cup is .25¢ and each quarter cup about .06¢. Add all costs down and multiply by 3 and add what you'd like to get paid for your time per hour. Something like that. I hope this helps.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Mayra! What I suggest you do is NOT listen to your friends and family that feel they have to give you your opinion or their 2 cents about how you should run your business. LOL. They know nothing about what you're doing. I've realized that when starting your own business, it's BEST NOT to share information with those closest to you. People don't realize the things that come out of their mouths, and if you let it, that negativity will start to make you doubt yourself. It doesn't matter that you just started. That doesn't mean you should be selling your cake for cheap, and DEFINITELY doesn't mean you should ever give your work away. Your friends and family shouldn't really be your clients so it doesn't matter what they think. LOL. $2.50 per serving is ridiculously low Mayra. You need to quickly raise your prices. I can't see how you can make any profit at all charging so little. I'd like to invite you (and highly recommend) you sign up for our April 30th Cake Pricing Webinar. You're on the right track with deciding what you want to pay yourself Annalis, but it should never be based on the cost of the ingredients. This is exactly what I teach my webinar participants to not do when it comes to coming up with a quote on a cake. It's completely unnecessary to figure out the cost of each ingredient this way. Sorry, but that is the truth... I would REALLY recommend you sign up for our April 30th Cake Pricing Webinar. Would like to really help you learn how to charge correctly for your work. my mom and I used to make cakes for friends and family and they would always depend on my mom because she continued to make free cakes. She was always rushed and would sometimes even make the cake again and this was during the time she was trying to build her business. Over the years of making free cakes, she was losing too much money and when she tried charging her "best friends" they got upset and said that my mom looked ridiculous asking for money for cakes she makes for free. Needless to say, I talked to sense into her and she now only makes cakes if and only if she decides to gift it or if she is getting paid.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  4 года назад

      Hi Jackie! You can make cakes on your own and practice. You don't have to have a customer to practice. In fact, it's better to practice on your own cakes without the pressure of pleasing a customer. All you need is the time to do it and the commitment. If you want to practice just on the cake decorating side and not necessarily the baking or icing side, you can practice decorating on fake cakes and of course you can practice your sugar modeling skills as well (cake toppers, cupcake toppers, etc.). Building your portfolio is easy. Just take good quality photos of everything you make and start posting on your social media. Nobody needs to know that they're not for a client. Hope that helps. :)

    I will admit I was bad at giving my family and friends cakes at a discount because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But I learned quickly they honestly didn't care all the work and money I put into their orders. So I stopped doing cakes for them and I honestly haven't heard anything or been invited to anything in years 😏. It's ok my business is still going strong and I now have a lot more business with clients that understand what all goes into the work. great video, i live in Dubai ( sorry my English isn't very good)and im a cookie decorator ( i do cakes on the side for close friends and family only)and i can honestly say that i have dealt with similar issues . i was wondering if you could do a video on how to deal with rude clients, i have had clients that were extremely rude and i had to give them a discount just to make them stop talking after a few hours of talking to them they called saying they found someone who have cheaper prices and would charge them less than what i charged for,so i asked if they wanted to cancel the order and they said "no" in their words"just thought you should know" i felt so angry and annoyed i made up an excuse so that i wouldn't make the order for them. and they keep calling asking me to make the order at a discounted price.

      Hi! Thank you for watching! We actually don't deal with rude clients. LOL. As Cake Artists we need to develop thick skin and be "tough" when necessary. Immediately put your foot down and don't ALLOW people to treat you in a way that YOU don't like. The WONDERFUL thing about being a cake business owner is that YOU get to CHOOSE who YOU want as a client. Remember that every time you speak to a client, YOU are interviewing THEM to SEE if they QUALIFY to be your client. Not the other way around. :) I'd like to invite you to register for our May 28th Cake Pricing Webinar. We have some spots left right now but they go very quick. We cover all of these things and I'm certain it will really help you. If you're interested you can find the link in the "show more" section underneath this video. :)
