    You're right we need to learn to appreciate ourselves. From now on, if anyone ever says to me, "Why? It's just flour, eggs and frosting!" I'll just tell them, (with a HUGE smile on my face), "Ohhhhh.... you came to the wrong place then. You're wanting a cake from the grocery store or Costco. All of MY cakes are completely customized works of art!". It would be like saying a house is just wood and stuco.

    God bless you for this video! I'm starting a home cake business and I have seen videos that say you must calculate $0.10 for salt. Because of this video I have put down 1 hourly rate. I already know having made over a hundred cakes how much it's going to cost me.
    You have literally saved me hours of financial frustration. And if a customer doesn't like it they can go elsewhere and that's okay. Thank you so much!!!! New sub

    I'm only 15 and just starting out and experimenting with making good, detailed cakes and being so young I've already had many people asking me to make them a cake. I made a gardening cake and only charged £20, it took me roughly 2-3 days. I realise how much people can actually make for making cakes now😳😳

    Omg I loved all the great information. sadly, not everyone think is worth paying a lot for a cake but little by little I'm increasing my prices. and I will take into consideration what is my rate for hour. Love you guys!😉😜😙

      Glad you enjoyed it! You're right Norma. Nor everyone thinks custom cakes are worth paying for, but thank God you don't need everyone to be your client. Just a few. Don't worry about the ones that can't afford your work. I would suggest to increase your prices NOW to what they should be, not little by little. Why? Because if you only do it a little bit at a time, you'll little by little be doing cakes for people that shouldn't be your clients. Think about that ok? Love you too and thanks for watching! :)

    It's hard to make cake sells when you have other cake people selling there cakes for $30-40 dollars for a 10 inch fondant cake. Or $50 on a 2 tier fondant cake. So I can't sell many cakes because they just say I'll just go to Fulanita who sells the cake for less. I end up with very low sells. Even though this is my hobby and have my day job but it's tough to sell at higher prices here

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +12

      Hi Ever! What other people are charging for their cakes should NOT affect you or interest you in any way. If other cakers are selling their cakes for a "measly" $30-$40, then you should be GLAD those clients are going to them. Those are EXACTLY the type of cheap clients you DON'T want. You CAN sell cakes. Just NOT to the ones that will go with the "Fulanitas". LOL. I challenge you start "thinking" differently. Stop being your cake business as "limited" because of others. Start trusting God and asking Him to send you the RIGHT clients. Don't worry or think about what others are charging. You just start charging correctly for your work, stick to your guns, and don't let what cheap people "say" bother you at all. :)

    Hi Laura & Arnie!!! First, I so enjoy watching you guys in these videos as well as your tutorials. I started working with fondant a couple of years ago because I wanted to get into doing toppers for cupcakes/cakes. I bake mostly for family/friends and have done a few sculpted cakes but I find now that I prefer doing figures more than baking. I still want to continue to learn more baking/decorating techniques/recipes but I want to know how differently is it to charge for a cake vs. a cake topper/figure? I know you ship a lot of toppers to clients and was wondering if you can be profitable doing just toppers or do you have to find a balance between baking and toppers? Also, does your PDF on pricing help with pricing toppers or do you still have figure out what your time is worth regardless of the product your creating? I hope my question makes sense ☺️
    Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge/experiences with us!!!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Nayda! Thank you so much! We appreciate that! :) You sound like me! LOL. I prefer making figures over making cakes. Thank God my hubby likes to bake and make the icing. I do however find icing cakes relaxing. With the way we charge, it's very similar to charging for toppers as it is cakes. It all comes down to what we feel one hour of our time is worth plus the cost of materials, etc. This is something that we cover a lot in our Cake Pricing Webinar. We're now registering for our April 30th online class if you'd like to join. Would love to have you! :) Yes! You CAN be VERY profitable making only toppers. A big chunk of our income comes from that alone. The PDF only helps you figure out what you've been paying yourself in the past for your cakes. I think you would REALLY benefit from taking the webinar. We will of course cover toppers at some point in the future. Thanks for your awesome question Nayda! :)

    Thank you guys for these videos! I have been a subscriber for a couple years now and have learned so much. And I understand the hourly charge based on what we want to make per hour. I expect a certain amount per hour from my employer and and wouldn't work for less. But I feel I take soooo long to do a cake, baking, making the frosting, rolling fondant, etc, etc, etc and I feel I should be so much faster. I make good money doing ultrasound and I feel it would be wrong to charge someone what I make as a Sonographer (which I wouldn't really want less) for my slowness. I don't know how to get past that. I would LOVE some time saving techniques and tips on how to get it done efficiently or do you think it is just repetition that will be the key. I have been doing cakes for some time and they end up beautiful but I feel I should just be faster. Thank you so much!!!!!! 💖

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Terri! Thank you for being with us this long! :) Don't worry about you increasing your speed. You need to take the time that you NEED to take. We don't work fast... at all... We take our time in order to do it right. You need to just get past that Terri. If your cakes come out beautiful, it wouldn't be "wrong" to charge what you make as a Sonographer. Remember, if someone wants to order a cake from YOU, they have to pay what YOU feel your work is worth. Now, if YOU don't feel your work is worth that much, that's a different story. Then the problem wouldn't be that charging that much is "wrong". The problem would be you not believing the quality of your work demands that type of pay. Repetition and practice is the key to doing things more "efficiently", but not necessarily "faster". Don't want to do things faster just so you can charge less. I hope this helps Terri! God bless you and thanks for watching! :)

    Totally love these videos. I've read through some of the comments and I notice you often say it doesn't really matter how long it takes you to do something but this is where I "get stuck" with the pricing. For example, sometimes it takes me 15 minutes to ice a cake while other times, everything goes wrong and it takes me an hour. Same with other various things like making figures etc. Do you just work with an average (that you figure out over time) when trying to figure out how many hours a certain cake will take?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you so much! We appreciate you watching. :) I'm a firm believer in not rushing. A Cake Artist needs to take their time and do things right. Whether that's going slow for someone, or moderately fast. Everyone works best at their own pace. Oh my gosh! I WISH I could ice a cake in 15 min! LOL. I swear it takes me about 30 minutes or more just to ice an 8"! LOL. You are blessed with skills my friend! Okay, I just read where things "go wrong". Been there done that. There's times I have to rip off the fondant, then my icing gets ruined and I have to re-ice and then cover in fondant again.... VERY frustrating. That's how it goes. We have good days and we have bad days. We have to do a lot of educated "guesstimating". We know from experience that things can and sometimes do go wrong, or we know that if we're doing something for the very first time, like a certain character or technique for example, that it will take longer so we have to factor in that time. You nailed it. "Over time" our guesstimating gets more and more accurate. This is something that is learned with repetition and experience. I hope that makes sense, and I hope it helps. :)

    I have only made the same cake twice once. All other cakes I have made are unique. If I don't know how long it will take, how can I determine how much to charge? Some things I have done take longer than I anticipated & others didn't take as long as I thought it would.

    • @paolarojas4798
      @paolarojas4798 7 лет назад +2

      Sharon Hatley exactly! I have the same question.. becouse, like your advice says that i have to know how much is 1 hour of my work worth, how can we do that? if you have to give your clients a quote before you take an order from them?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      That's is mostly our experience as well Sharon. The majority of the work we do here, we do it for the very first time. Rarely do clients ever order the same thing over and over again. You can use previous experience working on different designs, types of handmade decorations, etc, to "guesstimate" how much time something will take you. If it's something entirely new, I always add more time than I think it will take because more than likely I'll run into issues I wasn't expecting. Things ALWAYS take longer than we think they're going to take. LOL. Always "round up" on your allotted time to make sure you're not cutting it too close. Hope that helps! :)

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      HI Paola! I just replied to Sharon if you'd like to read the reply. :) What you need to know is what YOU believe one hour of your time is worth. You can VERY EASILY figure that out now. This amount is what you'll always use in the future for any cake order. if a client wants to hire you to create a cake for them, YOU need to know what YOUR time is worth, or else how will you know what YOU WANT to make? Like I said in the video, we'll discuss in the future how to charge for the cake itself (per serving according to the intricacy of the design), but you have to know what your time is worth in order to charge for ALL of the work that is involved that isn't the actual making of the cake (baking, icing, etc.). Would love to invite you to register for our webinar so I can help you specifically. :)

    I came to the conclusion that cake decorating is the only job in the world where people don't expect to pay for your time! If you call a plumber or an electrician to do some work in your home, you KNOW you're going to have to pay an hourly rate. But, if someone calls you looking for a beautiful customised cake and you say x amount, they are appalled with what you are quoting them! I work for a home baking company and the amount of people that look for free samples out of the van! Well, I could just empty the van along the road handing out free stuff! I had a builder ask me last week for a free sample out of the van. I said no problem, but I need some work done in my home, you might come over next week and give me some free samples of your work. You would'nt see his backside for dust getting out of there! I gave up cake decorating, people just made me sick, cheapskates! Great tutorial for people starting off, wish I had it when I started.xx

You can start your business again, and this time be successful! We're here for you! God bless you. :)

    So, do you think that the "one hour" of time that we think we are worth should be reflective of our experience, too? I mean I would think you would probably charge more than me since I'm not as experienced as you and may not know how to do/make certain things as quickly as you.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Judy! Yes most definitely! The more experience, the more honed in your skills are, the more professional and beautiful your cakes are, the more you should be paying yourself per hour. This is a dollar amount that needs to increase with time and experience. When it comes to creating cakes/decorations etc., speed has nothing to do with it. Everyone works at different speeds. I don't work fast, so it's not a matter of trying to get things done quicker. It's just taking the time you need to take to create your cakes. I hope that helps! :)

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Judy, You're right, cost of living IS different everywhere, but that has nothing to do with anything. LOL. YOU still need to determine what YOU feel one hour of YOUR TIME is worth. Wherever you are. Let me see if I can help you get unconfused a little... LOL. The entire purpose of figuring out what 1 hour of your time is worth, is so that you can use this information to help you provide an accurate quote for a cake. If you watched the entire video, you'll know that I said that this is only PART of coming up with a quote, but it's THE most important thing you need to know in order to charge correctly for your cakes. The $ amount per hour you pay yourself is ADDED TO the cost of the cake itself (which needs to be figured out per serving). This is something we'll cover in a future video. If you're still confused, I would highly recommend you register for our webinar as I'd love to teach you how to charge correctly for your cakes. The webinar isn't something you "get", you register and attend the webinar online. God bless you! :)

    I know people price so many different ways. After reading through previous comments I'm confused why your time is not factored into your slice price. And isn't your profit really above and beyond your time? (Money going back into the business, not your pocket.) I do agree, we don't consider ALL of the things that our time is spent on, like shopping and emails. Whew, the emails!!! lol

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +3

      Hi Lin! Thank you for your question! It's an excellent one! :) Within the price per serving (depending on the intricacy of the design) IS the $ that covers all ingredients, plus payment for the time we spend making the cake itself (baking, icing, covering in fondant for example), PLUS PROFIT (beyond our time as you said). We did not cover this in this particular video, but will be covered in the next (or else the video would've ended up being 3 hours long, LOL). The price per serving does not include time spent making decorations (and other things/embellishments) added to the cake, plus other factors involved in creating the design. This is the purpose of arriving to an actual $ amount for what you feel 1 hr. of your time is worth. When you charge correctly for your work (the way we are teaching/will continue to teach in future videos), you will have a big enough profit to where you can put money both back into your business AND your pocket. There needs to be enough money left over to go into both, or else a cake business cannot survive. I hope this answers your questions at least a little bit, and hopefully it'll all start to make more sense with the coming videos. God bless! :)

    Thank you guys soooo much for all the great advice you both have shared! I started my home based cakery this pass May here in Florida. The hardest part of this whole experience is, "How much do I charge??" Oh the research that has gone into this subject! And still I was at a loss until watching these videos! Right after your advice I received an order from a new client who ownes a local business in my area. She and I had spoken several months ago about working together to include my cakes into her party packages. She reached out to me today in providing a cake for a client of her's from out of the country. So I sat down before giving her a qoute used the mathematics of figuring out the cost of time and ingredients based off of what I felt 1 hour of my time is worth. And boy did it throw me off! $115 for a 6in round! I just knew in my heart of hearts she would think I was crazy!! But as you guys have thaught us to have courage and price our art for what it was worth, I sent her the quote! She was really just the middle man in the ultimate decision of the purchase, so I am waiting for a response back from her client. But I Did It! I took the plunge and empowered myself to move towards creating a non-stressful happy business! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! If it wasn't for you helping give me confidence then I would still be paying my clients to bake my cake art. Next on the list conquering social media, creating a website and promoting my business to the public. I would be so greatful if you guys can do this subject as your next video!

    Laura.....I'm a new subscriber and am thrilled with your Cake Biz Series, but.......I am confused! You're saying that the cost of ingredients/supplies shouldn't even factor into what you charge for a cake, but....if I wanted to pay myself $15.00 per hour and the time I put into a particular cake is 10 hours, that is $150.00 for my time. But how, then, do I know how much to charge beyond the $150?? Isn't that where the specific costs of ingred.,etc. come into play?

      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Joann! Thanks for subscribing and we're so glad you are excited about the Cake Biz Series! That's okay! I know one can easily get confused. :) Yes there is a specific price for all of your ingredients and time that we must take into consideration when providing quotes for our cakes. Please be sure to check out the Cake Biz Video where we discuss "price per serving". It's called "Is Your Price Per Serving Profiting You". In this video you'll see we discuss this very topic and it'll hopefully all make sense to you. Let me know if you have any other questions after watching the videos after this one. God bless! :)

    I would love to sign up for the webinar class but for a few months from now. Do you think you will offer it again later in the year? I'm dabbling in the idea of being a cake artist. I just made my first cake entirely on my own a month ago and I still have yet much more to do so I can have a better idea on time (so I don't calculate mistakes that slowed me down but will never happen again) and also so I have more cakes to calculate costs from. For right now I will for sure get the guide soon, so it can help me out for the meantime. Thank you for the videos you do!!!

      Hi Regina! Yes definitely! We will attempt to have one every month this year. You're very early in your caking journey and you'll soon find out that mistakes will ALWAYS be made. We always want to include time for "incidentals". Most of the time, things take a lot longer than we anticipated and we have a lot of "re do's". LOL. I hope to have you soon! God bless and thanks for watching! Enjoy your caking journey! :)

    Hey laura and arnie...I wouldn't know how to do it hourly because i stop in between working....like having to stop to feed the kids or i have to go pick up the kids at school....etc....another question is how do i charge for dummies....what if a customer wants a huge 5 tier cake but doesn't want all that cake.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Ynieves1976! Your situations sounds A LOT like ours. We have to CONSTANTLY stop what we're doing to attend to my Mom. She's now elderly and needs quite a bit of 24/7 care. It really is a miracle that we get as much work done as we do. LOL. Having said that, you can still track the amount of time things take you. Keep a little notebook with you and jot down your start and stop times. Remember it's not about how fast we can get things done. You take the time you need to take to complete each task in your caking process. Now, having said all that, remember like I mentioned in the video, the purpose of knowing how long things take you, is so that you can take ALL of that time into consideration so that you don't undercharge for your work. If you'd like to complete the self-pay discovery form within the Cake Artist's Guide, then it definitely would help to track your time so that you can input that info. Great question! When charging for dummy cakes, we make sure to charge more for those than we would a real cake. The more work something is to do, the more we charge. For us, it's easier to cover a real cake in fondant than it is a dummy cake. Therefore we charge more for dummy cakes. The majority of time clients "think" that if they order a fake cake, it's less work. NOT AT ALL. Remember that the cake itself, is NOT where it's at. It's the decoration. You still have to decorate that dummy cake as IF it were real cake. Always charge more for dummy cakes. Take your TIME into consideration. Hope that helps! :)

Acquaintances, parents from my kid school have asked me to make a wedding cake, macarons, etc not realizing that I can do 10-20 surgeries in the time it would take me to do that. For me it's a labor of love. A professional would be able to do it more quickly for less.

    I agree, we need to establish what our worth is, and it's the same with a lot of handmade products. But then.....you have what the competition is charging, they don't value thier time or they say it's just a hobby I'm happy if I get the cost of my ingredients plus a little bit more. A lot of the time cake artists and any handmade producer have the attitude that even if I do decide that I'm worth more but a customer won't pay that price. I don't know if it's they are not targeting the right market. I'm in Australia and I'm just starting out in would love to have a small business, but I look at what's around at what cake artists charge and then everyone follows suit.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  6 лет назад +1

      If you see everyone around you is "following suit" Cathie, make sure you don't. Go against the grain. You shouldn't be happy with just getting the cost of your ingredients and a little bit more. Get in the habit now of not "settling" and "giving in" to clients. The longer you do that, the harder it will be to change those bad habits in the future. Don't worry about what the competition is charging. What someone else charges has nothing to do with what you charge. You really don't have any competition. You will have your own clients and they'll have theirs. If someone wants to order a cake from YOU, they will pay what you are asking for. HAVE the attitude that you ARE worth more, and if a customer won't pay that price, then you just don't make a cake for them. It's that simple. You DO NOT lower your price. You just simply say thank you and goodbye. I believe you can have your small business, but be sure to start off on the right foot. Don't compromise, don't settle, don't put up with mediocrity, and BELIEVE that you are worth more. I know you can do it and I know YOU WON'T "follow suit". God bless you Cathie! :)

    Do you figure in the cost of ingredients and supplies in order to calculate price per serving? Or how do you come up with that price. love your videos by the way.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you Anita! We don't calculate the cost of ingredients and supplies in order to come up with a price per serving. The price we choose per serving (depending on the intricacy of the design), more than covers the cost of ingredients, supplies, materials, etc. We choose a price per serving according to how intricate the design is. The simpler (for example solid color buttercream, or fondant) the less expensive per serving. The more intricate ( for example ombre ruffles, brush embroidery, hand-painted, etc.), the more expensive. Hope that makes sense and that's the topic we'll be covering in our next video. Let me know if you have any other questions. God bless! :)

    Do you have a recommendation on an exact number we should be charging for an hour of our work? I work at a part time job making $11.50 an hour and I feel like I'm getting underpaid for all the work I do. Thinking about my cake business, I would feel comfortable charging up to $15 an hour, but I know I should probably be charging more. I think we reduce our hourly rate because we feel bad about charging too much even though this hourly rate is supposed to help us overcome that. Would you recommend charging twice minimum wage? Three times minimum wage? If I take a salary of $60,000 and divide it by 2,080 hours for a full time job, it would be about $28.80 an hour. In a previous comment I mentioned I was going to be a tax accountant and you said I could make more money as a cake artist. A tax accountant could make $90,000 a year once well established which would be charging over $40 an hour which I feel is way too much for a cake. I'm struggling to find clients now that will pay $2.50 a serving for buttercream and $4.00 a serving for fondant. (Decorations are extra). And I feel if I raise my prices I won't have any business.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Fallingfeetfirst! What you should be paying yourself per hour can only be determined by you, the Cake Artist. It's impossible for me to recommend to another Cake Artist what they should be making as I don't know how they personally value their time. You're on the right track however by using your part time job as a reference point. If you know you should be "making" more than $15/ hr., then be sure you pay yourself more, or else you'll continue to feel "shortchanged". Remember that the amount of money WE decide we should be making per hour is not all that is involved when coming up with a quote. You CAN EASILY make more than $90,000 a year with your cake business. If you feel paying yourself more than $40 per hour for your work is "too much", then clients will never agree to paying you for a cake. You're right, it does ALL START with how WE see ourselves and our work. You have to see it and believe it FIRST. Or else it'll never happen. For me personally $15 per hour wouldn't even be worth turning on my oven. $28 per hour seems a little more like it. Would you feel GOOD and SATISFIED paying yourself $28 per hour for the work you do creating your cakes? Remember, this is something that only YOU can determine. In the next video we'll discuss "price per serving", then we'll bring it all together and show how you use price per serving AND what you feel one hour of your time is worth for charging for cakes. Thank you for the question and comment. It's excellent info that I can use in our future videos. :)

      No, definitely not. No need to add up the cost of your ingredients at all when coming up with a quote for your client. What you charge for your cake (cost of the cake itself which is figured out per serving) and what you charge for your time (for all the work you need to do to create decorations, design, etc.) will take care of ingredients, supplies, etc. Like I said, if you charge correctly for your work, those things won't even make a dent in your profit. We'll go more into detail in the next video. Would like to invite you to register for our webinar Toula! Thank you for the kind words. God bless you! :)

    Hi!! this is great!!! thank you so much. However, I do have a question: how would you charge a customer for you being a "slow worker"? (you take your time) let me explain myself better: if I dont work fast, or I am learning a technique that , of course at the beginning takes me time to master lets say, how do I charge for something that for me took me 8 hours and other more experienced cake decorators take only three hours??? do you understand my point? thank you if someone answers....

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! it's not a matter of charging "differently" if you work fast or slow. It's a matter of making sure that WHEN you provide an accurate quote for a cake, you've already taken into consideration all of the time that it's going to take you to make THAT specific cake. Before providing a quote however you must have already figured out how much you are going to charge per serving for a cake with that design. Your price per serving must already include your time in it. If you're unsure of what I mean, please be sure to watch the next few videos that involve knowing what to charge per serving and knowing how to charge for your decorations. Don't ever concern yourself with what "other experienced cake decorators" charge. They have absolutely nothing to do with you. You don't ever want to charge "compared to" what others charge. You are you, and, they are them. Everyone has different speeds at which they work, different talents, different ways of accomplishing techniques, etc. The TRUE WORTH of YOUR time and YOUR work can only and should only be determined by you. I hope that helps and I hope you keep watching. God bless! - Laura

    I am currently a home baker that really does it for a hobby, and although they are really popular, I have never charged for my cakes at all.. I am currently in that flip/flop stage of wondering if I can make a business and sell my cakes, but have yet to take the plunge. I have been watching these (excellent!) videos to try and avoid some pitfalls if I do make the step.. but under those circumstances, would there be benefit in me taking your self pay discovery survey? I want to learn how and what to charge, but obviously have no prior experience examples to use? Thanks again for this series and being so wonderfully helpful ❤

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Lulu! I know what it feels like to be in that stage. I've been there. Thank you for your kind words about the videos. Glad you are enjoying them. The Cake Artist's Guide we've made will benefit you for when you decide to actually start charging for your work (turn it into a business). If you've never charged for a cake I would recommend you get on the road to making sure you don't undercharge for when you begin charging Complete the guide on some cakes you've made and just "pretend" you charged for them. Think of what you "would've" charged, and use that figure to see what you would've ended up paying yourself had you charged. If you decide to actually turn this into a business, I would highly recommend registering for one of our webinars early in your career. We'll teach you our cake pricing techniques and use a lot of the info you'll obtain by completing the Cake Artist's Guide. If you'd like to learn specifically how to charge, our webinar is the way to go. The guide only shows the Cake Artist what they've "been" paying themselves and also opens our eyes to all the things that need to be taken into consideration when quoting for a cake. I hope that helps Lulu and I look forward to hearing more from you in our future videos. God bless! :)

    Hi. Please help me. I know and understand all that you are saying. But I still have to ask... What if I take so long to decorate a standard 8" round cake? I decorated an 8" cake and I put so much time in to it. I had it to look like a girl was running a race all around the side of the cake. And for the top of the cake I had a gymnast on a beam. So even though it was a small cake, i put a lot of work into it. How in the world could I charge what I wanted? Please tell me your advice when it comes to small/1 tiered cakes. Thank you so much and thank you sooooo much for your videos about the business side of things😀👍🏽

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      HI! The answer to your question is very simple. You asked "How in the world can I charge what I wanted"? VERY EASILY. It's not a matter of charging "what you want". It's a matter of charging for the amount of work that you do. Charging for the TRUE VALUE of the cake. Now whether the client WANTS to pay or can "afford" what you charge is a totally different question. That's why it's so important to know how to charge properly for cakes. If the client who asked for all of that decoration couldn't afford it, then they would need to tone down the design. A small one tier cake can be as expensive as a 3 tier wedding cake. It just completely depends on how much work you're going to put into the cake. I hope that makes sense. Once you watch the following videos on how to charge per serving and how to charge for your cake decorations, it'll all begin to make a little more sense. I'd like to invite you to join our Sept. 17th webinar. We are registering for that at this moment. If you're interested in receiving one on one help please be sure to sign up right away. You can find the link to register right under the video. God bless! :)

    • @krazykoolcakes

      That's why I always suggest to Cake Artists that when "guesstimating" the amount of time something will take, they should add more time. Especially if it's something you've never done before. Things ALWAYS take longer than we plan or anticipate. :)

      Hi Nins! This is a great question! There are so many ways that you can grow your business. This topic is at the top of my list for a future cake biz video. The #1 thing you can do is promote your business by speaking to the public face to face. Arnie is our BIGGEST FAN and he tells EVERYONE he meets about our business and what we do. I'm not kidding you, EVERYONE. At the stores, at church, at his basketball games, at restaurants, everywhere! He hands business cards out to everyone he talk to and always has tons of photos of our work on his phone and actually SHOWS them the work right then and there. He is very sociable and likable so everyone loves speaking with him. We get TONS of orders this way. I mean TONS. This of course is just one way. There are many other ways we'll discuss in the future. I hope that gives you some ideas. :)

    ....and so, we really also need to be able to estimate "how long" it will take us to make the cake, right?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      We need to be able to "guesstimate" as close as possible the amount of time certain things will take such as hand-making decorations, executing certain techniques, etc. The cake itself including baking, icing, decorating, is charged for per serving. The cost per serving entirely depends on how intricate the design is. Adding the $ amount you charge for the actual cake AND the dollar amount you'll be paying yourself for all of the hours it will take you to create decorations, etc. is what gives you the TOTAL amount you quote for the cake. The estimation of amounts of time things will take will get easier and easier with each cake and with experience in creating certain types of decorations. I hope that helps Judy and we'll go more into detail in future videos. This was just the tip of the iceberg. LOL. :) Would LOVE to invite you to register for our webinar! :)

    I have to admit that I didn't believe in myself Laura.... like your husband & you state in this video... the excuses we make... I would be like, "People won't pay that much." .. or things like just being discouraged for whatever reason.. from bumps in the road.. that makes it a little hard.
    My husband & kids being by my side.. have been a true Blessing... to keep baking....
    Heart breaking this year was losing my baby girl this year in March 2018... I wanted to walk away from it all... & lose my life to nothing!
    I keep hearing my Princess say to me Momma you can do this!!!.... after wanting to give up... because she is no longer by my side... It's been the hardest thing a Mother can ever bare...
    I enjoy watching your videos... & pray to meet you one day... we too are from El Paso, TX. Currently live in Albuquerque..... your videos are very motivational & inspiring....

      Hi Jennie! I want to give you a HUGE hug right now! I too know what it's like to not have your baby with you anymore. I know the pain my friend. But you know what? You haven't "lost" her. You know EXACTLY where she is. The time you are without her by your side is just "temporary". Remember that this life is 'nothing but a vapor'. That's how the bible describes it. Compared to ALL the time we will spend in eternity with our loved ones, this time on Earth, and the time without them is but a blink of an eye! I know that while we're here if feels like forever, but when you think of your little girl, don't be sad anymore. Picture her with a HUGE smile on her face, being loved, being happy, healthy, and MOST importantly being cared for and raised by God. If she had the opportunity to come back, she NEVER would. Nobody would EVER want to leave heaven and the presence of God. THAT'S where there is PURE JOY. She is STILL your daughter and always will be! You STILL HAVE HER! In heaven there is NO TIME. No such thing. When you get there she will be there and she'll be like, "oh there you are!" Haha! When you feel pain and hurt, ask the Holy Spirit to comfort you. Ask the Lord to give you "gladness for mourning". Get in the bible. Get into His Word, and read about how wonderful heaven is and everything WE have to look forward to. Make sure you GET THERE! If you haven't yet, ask Jesus to enter your heart and tell Him you want Him to be Lord and Savior of your life. If you give your heart to Him, then you WILL go to heaven, and you WILL see your little girl again. I promise you. My babies are waiting for me in heaven and I can't wait to wrap my arms around them and kiss them a million times over! Get back to LIFE! Get back into what you enjoy! Do it for yourself, do it for her, for your hubby and kids, and do it for God! Do EVERYTHING as "unto God"! CHOOSE JOY over sadness! CHOOSE to be happy! It's a CHOICE only you can make. REFUSE to be sad or depressed! YOU tell YOUR HEART how to feel! YOU tell YOUR BRAIN what to think! You are the one that's in control. Not life. Not your circumstances. Be STRONG in the Lord my friend! He's all you need to live a successful and happy life. Both here on Earth and in heaven! I'm here for you ok?! I'd LOVE for you to join us in our next class here in El Paso, TX. Oct. 21st is the date. Come be around people that will encourage you and lift you up, and will FILL you with the "want to" to continue being happy! Email me if you're interested ok? krazykoolcakes@gmail.com God bless you my friend! You'll be in my prayers tonight Jennie. :)

      That's a problem that LOTS of Cake Artists have. But, if they don't want to pay, that just means they are not your client. Your business promotion should be geared towards people that can and want to pay.

    I appreciate this detailed information. Thank you.
    One thing I sort of missed was the concept of 'profit'. I understand that our time must be valued and we need to pay ourselves a fair wage but should our 'business' be taking a profit on top of that? Is that a separate factor from our personal profit?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  6 лет назад

      You're very welcome Helen! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Your business profit is the same as your personal profit. If you are only paying yourself or being compensated for your time, you're not making any profit at all. The idea of someone being in business for themselves is so that they can make a profit, or else why be in business. Nobody wants to just "get by". A fair hourly wage is just that, an hourly wage. Like an employee that works for someone. If you own a business, you should be making a profit. That's an hourly wage, plus $ on top of that. I hope that makes sense. :)

    Hi guys, sorry, me again! 🙈 In the next video, I know you said you were going to cover price per portion, but could you touch on how you work out how big the cakes need to be to get x number of portions? My daughter has asked me to make her wedding cake, and I have no idea how to work out how many tiers or what size they need to be to feed a certain number of people...the pressure feels huge as I've never done anything like this before and I really don't want to mess it up. Fortunately I have almost a year to perfect it lol. Thanks in advance xx

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Lulu! Everyone's serving size is different which is why I recommend you make your very own serving chart and always stick to it. Please check out my tutorial on how to make your own cake serving chart. Be sure to look at other cake charts online just to "see" more or less how many servings others say their cake tier sizes provide so you know your'e at least in the vicinity of what an industry size slice is (2"). If your tiers are providing 15 or more servings (or less) than what most cake charts predict, then you would be way off. I created my own chart because I know how big I like to slice my cakes, plus there just are TOO MANY different serving charts out there. I got frustrated, so just made my own. (Although all the ones I've seen are "kind of" close to each other). We give our clients good size portions. You need to figure out how big of a slice you'd like your clients to enjoy. The way you draw your cake serving chart, would be the same exact way you slice it. I hope that makes sense! :)

      Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs how do you control how they slice your cake at the venue though? Say I worked it out to be 1.5x2” pieces and they cut it bugger and don’t get enough servings. How do you deal with that?
