    I'm glad i watched this video. I have already quit my cake business due to clients not willing to pay. I have been lowering and lowering my prices until I practically give them away for free. It seems as though people don't take me serious since I'm only 20. I look forward to videos in this series. Hopefully I will gain tips to reopen my cake business!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +9

      Hi Lorenza! Thank you for watching! Sorry to hear you quit but it's not quitting if you pick it up again. No more lowering your prices girl. You can have a successful cake business no matter your age. You are a SERIOUS Cake Artist and people will begin to see that your age has nothing to do with it. Look forward to to discussing "clients unwilling to pay", which by the way are not your clients. You want WILLING clients who are MORE than happy to pay what you are charging. :)

    Im so excited for this series. I struggle with pricing but my biggest struggle is finding a wholesale supplier so I can stop running to the craft stores for over priced supplies. Any good suggestions?

    Hi guys. Just started listening to you guys recently from Namibia. Awesome couple and yes thanks for sharing the faith and encouragement Im super encouraged! I just want you to share on how I can deal with the work load of being a solopreneur home baker (cake creator). I sometimes get so overwhelmed with so much washing up although I really enjoy baking and decorating. Plus with two little one's its really not easy. How do I remain sustainable Im working fultime and have a familyy to take care of but I really belief in what I am doing!

      Hi Ester! Thanks for watching our tutorials. We really appreciate it! :) It's our pleasure to share and encourage. The best way to deal with a heavy workload when you're a one woman show is to get REALLY GOOD and knowing how to manage your time. As long as you are organized, not a procrastinator, and learn to manage your time, no matter how much work you have, you should be able to get it done without stressing out. Sit down and make a "set schedule" for when you will complete certain tasks and stick to it no matter what. I hope that helps Ester! God bless you!

    How do you go about getting more orders to ensure a more regular income?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      That's a great question! The more one promotes their business the more orders. This can be accomplished by word of mouth (self-promotion), referrals, and advertising your business online through social media and things like YP. All of things combined work great to keep a steady flow of business coming. :)

      Hi Vicki! So happy you found us! That's awesome! WELCOME! Good for you for wanting to start your cake business. I think you can be very successful at it. If God is doing it for US, HE WILL do it for you my friend! I'm sorry to hear about your Mom and your Dad. Arnie and I have gone through a similar situation. One of the HARDEST times of our lives for sure. Thank God for God's grace and help. We spent 8 years taking care of my beautiful Mom and she passed away a little over a year ago. She was totally healed from stomach cancer thank God, but several years later her little body was too tired and it was time for her to go home. I'm so happy for her knowing she's healthy and happy, and more importantly with God. Thank you for watching our tutorials. I really hope they provide you with a lot of help. :) I'd love to offer you a private consultation to help you get started as I am no longer offering public webinars. The last one was in November. I really think I can help you avoid a lot of mistakes, plus teach you everything you need to know about running a successful cake business. If you're interested in setting up your consultation, please feel free to email me to krazykoolcakes@gmail.com Thank you for your very kind words and look forward to hearing from you. God bless you! :)

    Hi! Ok so this is my very 1st question: I never know exactly how much frosting to make when I'm making cakes.
    Can you offer a "rule of thumb" depending on the diameter and layers?
    Thank you!!
    For me, baking is therapy. My daughter wants me to make her wedding cake so I'm nervous about transporting it & keeping it fresh. Any tips or suggestions would be awesome.

    You guys are so cool. I'm a newbie and I'm starting to get 2-3 orders a week, and I don't think I'm not that good yet and want to get better. Thx for helping us. My husband says exactly that, and I say that too.... hubby says I'm probably making 2.00/hr when u factor in hydro, water, gas etc....
    Nice to put a face to Arnie and Laura. I'm trying to convince my hubby I can make money in time. I love cake/cupcake decorating.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you Kimberly! 2 to 3 orders a week is great if you are charging correctly. LOL. But if hubby says $2 an hour is what you're making, he may be right. LOL. You CAN make money. We'll help you with learning how to charge correctly for your work. You may make less cakes but in the end make more. :) I'd like to invite you to register for one of our webinars for thorough individual help. We have one this Sunday! :)

    Hoping you have some advice....I am a talented Cake Artist, but I can't seem to get clients. I don't have the extra funds to advertise on other web sites, like Wedding Wire and the Knot, (to the tune of $100's per month) I have a company web site, Facebook, pintrest but nothing brings in clients. How can I advertise on a limited budget?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Kristie! We don't advertise on any of those websites either. The fastest and best way to obtain clients (and be sure they are the right clients who are willing to pay what your work is worth, not just anyone) is to spread the word yourself. Facebook, Instagram and all those are great, but when it comes to paying clients, you want to TALK to as many people as possible. Hand out business cards like CRAZY! We get TONS of orders this way. This is the topic for one of our upcoming videos. Oh! Advertising with your local Yellow Pages is a HUGE plus. Be sure to link your listing to your website as well. Hope that helps a little. :)

    So happy to be coming along this video. I've watched your decorating and sculpting videos but never came to find a business video until now. I've struggled so much on pricing my cakes and look fwd to watching the next 10 videos. My now fiancé and I are in the Military and plan to start a family soon and wanted to dedicate some time to really making my in home cake business a small door front. I've learned throughout your tutorials that you only specialize in fondant cakes and my fiancé said it before"just specialize in what you love." I live in Florida and he's stationed in Virginia which ill soon be moving to and its just extremely hot to make buttercream cakes here in Florida and I've had so many crying moments were it just wont budge and your videos have helped me to wipe my tears and re-think things and adjust what I'm doing. I learned I have greater talents and it comes naturally for me to work with fondant then it is decorating a cake with buttercream. So I thank you for giving it your all and wanting us to have a struggle free baking zone and having done this for 3 years I don't mind sitting here for hours at a time watching your business videos because I know its going to be worth it. My fiancé is Asian he is from Vietnam and I am Hispanic born and raised in Florida but my parents and sisters are from Colombia. When my Fiancé and I came along your video we started laughing. I said wow its like looking into a mirror, only diff. is we are just starting out. Thankfully he handles money and numbers well; He does the pricing and the breakdowns now that we are together and well I do the baking and decorating. We hope to be just as functional in our baking business and marriage as well as you guys. Thank you for all that you do! - Andrea

    Please address tools and supplies. I know you must have all kinds of things, but I get overwhelmed feeling like I need another (or a different) "this" or "that" when I watch videos from various people. It has gotten extremely expensive and has begun to stifle my enthusiasm to decorate.
    I'd really like to hear how you went about deciding what items you would purchase. I'd also really like to know what items you have and where you got them from. There are sooo many online stores that it's hard to know which suppliers are really good to shop with.
    Thank you!

      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Thank you for your comment Cheryl! Don't let anything steal your joy and you just enjoy what you do. You really don't need that much. There are very few "necessary" tools. Most of what you see are just "extras" but not absolutely necessary. We'll cover these topics as well. :)

    Hi Arnie and Laura! I have been with you guys a long time from Austin, Tejas! I have been making cakes on the side and I know I am not charging enough because I factor in my heart. I recently started turning down making cakes for folks because I spend more to make the cakes than I charge. So, I know you will address that. Another question I have is going "legit"; what are the health department requirements if I work out of my home? Do I need a sales tax license? Stuff like that is what I am interested in knowing.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Melissa! Thank you for being with us! A fellow Texan!!! How awesome! Yes, so we definitely should be making MUCH MUCH MORE than we spend. Yes, we will definitely address this issue. You have great questions in reference to your own home business. I had all the same questions. You can find answers to all of those questions if you visit the Texas Cottage Food Law website. They outline all the do's and dont's of a home business.We'll of course cover many of these things. :)

      Hi Clouds! An online cupcake business sounds awesome! If these will be shipped, you just need to figure out how to make sure they are not damaged during shipping. I'm sure there's a way? Have you thought about that aspect? Do you live in a state where they do allow shipping baked goods out of state?

    I'm so excited for this series. It's so generous of you guys to be doing this for free. I would love to know the best places to buy supplies like icing sheets, gum paste, fondant, large icing scrapers, isomalt, food coloring, highlighters, sculpting tools, acrylic disc, and molds. I would also like to learn how to make cakes for hot weather, how to package them securely and what should I bring on deliveries. Could you give tips on the color wheel and how to get bright colors when coloring fondant. Tips on how to take pictures of your work. What are the must have things you need when trying to start a cake business. Lastly how do you know when it's time to move from your home and invest into a bakery. Thank you so much!

    Thank You so much for this and all the videos you have shared with us. As I sat here and watched it I was trying to figure out how many years ago I started following you. Many for sure since I still remember that you were a teacher and then started getting busier with the cakes to the point that you left 8th grade to then teach all of us. So happy for you and for all of us that you made that decision. ;) I have recently made the decision to commit myself to doing cake as a business after being asked for a cake. Thank you so much! :) We had to purchase some storage racks and now we are very well organized. You can order restaurant style racks online or even places like Sam's or Costco have nice stainless steel or aluminum racks. They're nice and tall so don't take up a lot of space. :)

    how do you get licensing to decorate with charaters such as Disney, Marvell, Hello Kitty, and sports team images, so you can avoid lawsuits? when decorating a cookie for instance you can not add a toy the customer buys? what is the right way to going about this?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Our business is totally stress free! LOL. We don't deal with customers who are hard to please. We deal with polite, well-mannered people who are more than happy to deal with us. This all has to do with knowing HOW to choose your clients right. Don't choose to work with clients who are hard to please. That'll definitely cause A LOT of stress. LOL.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      Hi Marlene! You are NOT OLD AT ALL!!! Don't think about the number. That has absolutely nothing to do with it! We are supposed to get BETTER, WISER, and STRONGER with age. Not old, weak, and definitely not taking a back seat. God RENEWS our strength daily. He gives you YOUTH, both physically and mentally. Look to the future and think of ALL that God STILL HAS TO DO in your life! He wants to bless you and give you a HOPE and a FUTURE! If you have it in your heart to start a cake business, it's because God PUT IT THERE! And if He put it there, He WILL supply the provision and will help you do it! He's your partner in everything you do! I'm so EXCITED for you! There is no reason in the world why you can't accomplish GREAT THINGS in the years to come! We are here to support you and we'll always cheer you on! Don't ever entertain negative thoughts in your mind ok? The second your start to doubt yourself, you just open your mouth and tell your doubt to SHUT UP! You say out loud "GOD HAS A GREAT FUTURE IN STORE FOR ME!!!" You can do it Marlene! :)

      We'll DEFINITELY be discussing pricing! You have to get over "feeling bad". Think of it this way, if you "feel bad" for charging "a lot", you're basically saying you don't think you work is worth it... right? What do you consider to be "a lot"? You have to believe your work is worth it before others believe it too! :) This is such an excellent topic to discuss in a video! Thank you for your input Jazy Jazz!

    • @katmama1556
      @katmama1556 7 лет назад

      Jazy Jazz Hi Jazy Jazz! I am the same way but I'm double your age and a little more. My problem is I feel guilty charging a lot of money for anything! Maybe in my subconscious I feel like it's not worth that kind of money because money doesn't come easy and I don't want to cause the client hardship after paying for the cake I made for them. I feel guilty! I end up telling them to pay me what they can afford. After, I'm angry with myself because I didn't make what I wanted to make. Maybe charging a certain price per hour and reminding myself of every hour I worked so hard and knowing my prices are correct and not too high. Just my two cents.

    I am so inspired by the videos that I have been watching today of your process. I have been in business for 8 years at this location but have been doing cakes for over 30 years. I know I don't make enough money doing cakes especially since I have given up so much time and life just trying to get them completed.
    I would love to know how many cakes you do in an average week? I know your prices are much higher than what I charge especially since I am constantly finding myself trying to find ways to help the customers cut their costs down. I would love to be able to start doing all of my cakes with fondant. I want to be able to find the time to give my cakes the time that I need instead of cutting down the labor to keep the costs down. Looking forward to following you more.

Those are exactly the kind of clients you don't want. We do a max of 2 cakes per week. We like to keep our stress level down and doing only 2 cakes a week that were well priced works great for us. :) Look forward to hearing more from you in future videos! :)

      Thank you Crystal! Thank you for watching! I know exactly what you're talking about. I've experienced that "separation" of sugar and color as well. I think it may have a lot to do with the consistency of the sugar. That happens a lot less if the sugar is sifted many many times. :)

    Hola! Ya le di like a todos los vídeos para verlos mas tarde cuando este en silencio jiji, yo horneo y decoro pasteles es lo que me encanta hacer, pero no tengo ni idea de como. cobrar cuando digo un precio hacen cara de quee¡! y así es como regalo los pasteles por el miedo a que piensen que es mucho y aparte no soy profesional he hecho muchos pasteles pero no estudie repostería lo que hago es porque busco veo practico, pero tengo que apreciar mas mi trabajo y mas que nada mi tiempo, porque tengo hijos y los descuido a ellos por hacer un pastel que no me pagan como debe de ser 😢

      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Hola Leslie! Gracias! Hay que combatir el miedo. Es el enemigo del progreso. No es necesario estudiar repostería para considerarse uno un Artista De Pasteles profesional. Yo tampoco estudie repostería. Todo lo que hacemos es de pura experiencia y practica. Si uno va descuidar a su familia, aunque por solo unos minutos, hay que asegurar de que estamos ganando bastante dinero, para poder usarlo para nuestras familias. Gracias por ver nuestros videos Leslie! Dios te bendiga! :)

    I have been entertaining the idea of starting my own business, but have NO clue what to do to get started. Could you talk about what the best beginning steps would be?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Step #1 would be to let those around you know that you are making cakes as a business. Talk to everyone about what you do and let them know that if they'd ever like to order a cake from you, you are available. Be sure to start charging correctly for your work from the very beginning. Don't offer free cakes. Have photos of your work on your smart phone or on your business card so you can actually show them what you do. That sparks the conversations and gets the business rolling. To this day, us speaking to everyone we meet and see out in the public is one of the top ways that brings us lots of orders.

      Hi JoJo! We've had a few disasters! Not any melting but we have had a few wedding cake disasters and a tall 3 tier cake topple over due to the suspension in our truck not acting right over a HUGE speed bump. In those situations the customer is not to blame and we offered a full refund. Our clients are awesome and never accepted the refund of course, but we did make it up to them by fulfilling their next order absolutely free. :)

      That's an AWESOME idea Kendra! We used to have a "studio tour" video but I took it down a few years ago because the song was apparently "copyrighted", but we'll definitely do another one! :)

    Hi Laura and Arnie!!! What a wonderful surprise when I had to look something up for school on RUclips and saw our lovely faces as the first video on my screen! I am looking forward to our Price Charging class on the 26th. I've been doing this on the side since 2010 and due to some circumstances (decided to weed out the poison - negative people from my life), I've decided it was time to take care of me. The reason why I did this is because I've been stagnant and I want to succeed. With your help, and encouragement, I can see this happening. Thank you for doing this! Love you both ~ Diana

      Hi Diana! Glad you saw this video! Can't wait to meet you in person on Sunday! We're going to have an AWESOME webinar! Good for you! Sometimes we have to do a good "weeding out"! LOL. So great to get RID of negativity. Life has enough of it on its own, the last thing we need are negative people surrounding us as well. You WILL succeed Diana! Love you too! See you Sunday! :)

    Saludos Laura y Ernie, mi nombre es Rosmaury Diaz, tengo 33 años, Venezolana, madre de 3 niños, soy ing. civil y repostera desde hace 4 años, los sigo desde hace muuuuucho tiempo, uno de las primeras tortas que hice fue una de Big Big Friend o como lo conocemos aquí: Amigazazo, y fue de gran ayuda ver tus figuras de gumpaste que uds publicaron, los amo de verdad, desde entonces no pierdo ninguno de sus videos, escribo en español porque ya se que hablas perfecto español.
    Les comento, no me quiero rendir, pero a estas alturas en mi país ya es muy difícil desempeñarse como repostera viviendo de las tortas, los altos costos de los ingredientes en comparación con el bajo poder adquisitivo de las personas, simplemente han hecho que las tortas de cumpleaños del tipo artísticas sean todo un lujo, así que pasé de hacer unas 5 tortas al mes en 2014-2015 a hacer cero (0) este año, bueno Laura, no tenía encargos en tres meses y me sentía muy mal, porque pensé que lo que más me gusta hacer se convertiría en solo un recuerdo, de trasnochos y satisfacciones, ya que durante el dia trabajo en una oficina como ingeniero y cuando tengo que hacer una torta, dispongo solo de la noche..
    ... muchas personas me aconsejan que con lo que yo puedo hacer con una torta, refiriéndose a la calidad visual y de sabor, podría ser exitosa en cualquier parte del mundo, pero menos en Venezuela, por la inflación, escasez de ingredientes básicos para la elaboración de una torta, o simplemente por falta de clientes ya que la mayoría de mis paisanos ahora somos pobres, luchadores por el alimento del dia a dia... Esperaré con ansias cada video que suban de esta serie para ayudar a los otros cake artist, y que sé, estoy segura que seran tan excelentes como todos sus productos, ya sean de artesanias, tortas o tutoriales, una vez más, los amo.
    Besos, Rosmaury

    Pricing, pricing, pricing and getting customers. I was a stay home mom of our 2 yearold and trying to start my Cake/Cake-pop business, I was never able to make enough money, so I had to go back to work and my husband doesn't believe anymore that I can have a successful business :( Thank you for all your awesome tutorials, can't wait for your new videos!

      Hi Dulce, I can see why your hubby would have a hard time believing you can have a successful business. But, don't let that get you down or discourage you. Remember that ALL SITUATIONS are temporary. EVERYTHING is subject to CHANGE. You CAN have a successful business. You have to do things differently. You can do it! These videos will help you see how you can make the money you want to make. It all comes down to setting your prices correctly and CHOOSING the right clients. If we ACCEPT cheap clients, we'll never make $. :)

    you guys are just so wonderful! I'd really love to know how to get started, go from side jobs to a real job? sometimes I get frustrated as well when I'm turned down for over pricing when I'm actually 50% if not more, under charging from my local bakery. it's really confusing as to why that happens. thanks so much! again you guys are doing such a great thing for so many people & I really appreciate your time! I look forward to your future videos!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you Lorrie! You're always so very kind to us. We appreciate you! Don't ever feel you have to charge less than anyone else just to get business Lorrie. In fact, it should be the other way around. You are ONE person making an entire cake with YOUR TWO HANDS. You're not a machine and you're not a bakery. You work is worth much more than that! If you know you're undercharging, don't do it anymore. The faster you stop undercharging, the faster you'll start seeing QUALITY clients finding you. :)

    Hello, my name is Hanna, I am 21 but I've always been an artist and fast learner. I learned how to do cakes a year ago and already I make beautiful cakes at home now, even with out all the "proper" tools (since we can't afford them) other people have seen my cakes and wish for me to make theirs but I'm horrified. I worked at Sam's club doing cakes where people yelled at you constantly, critiqued every little thing trying to make us and the managers to give them free cakes. I know our cakes were always beautiful but it makes me fearful to deal with people. How do you chose the right customers? Ones that won't bash your name to give them a cheaper cake? and how do you box your cakes? do the clients come pick them up or do you hand deliver to reassure nothing is wrong with the cake? Sorry for such a long comment y'all are my Inspiration. I wish I could be as happy as y'all, doing what we all love.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      HI Hanna! You have to get rid of the fear my friend. It's just a CHOICE you have to make. I'll tell you right now that if you have fear, you'll never be able to see your dreams come true. Fear is a DREAM STOPPER. I'm so sorry for the horrific experiences you had at Sam's but remember that it doesn't always have to be that way. The great thing about having your own business is that YOU CHOOSE your clients. You don't have to accept every order that comes along. You only CHOOSE TO DEAL with people YOU want to deal with. It's your business and you do whatever YOU WANT. Stop the fear, nip it in the bud, and take control of your own destiny. God has a GREAT PLAN for your life and your business and it does not include being ruled by fear. We'll discuss all of these things and choosing clients correctly in our videos. I'm sure it will help you gain the confidence you need. I CAN be happy! Just trust God with all your heart. Everything He's done and is doing for us, HE WILL do for you! :)

    I watch your tutorials and I can't wait for this series! Like you mentioned, there is not videos helping with the business side of things. I have been debating on even quitting baking cakes (which makes me sad). I started baking again to be able to stay at home with my toddler but it has completely taken over all aspects of my life. I sleep 2-4 hours a night.. work all day.. and miss out on so many things :(
    How do you go about taking orders? Do you recommend a website or a form to get all the information from the customer? I am having a lot of trouble with social media messages because it's a lot of back and forth trying to get all the necessary information.
    Thank you!

      Thank you so much for watching Jorden! We can't wait either! Don't quit! If it makes you sad, then you shouldn't quit! We'll talk about time management in a lot of these videos! You'll be surprised just how much you can get done in a short period of time if you just break up your tasks into small chunks. I know how overwhelming things can get. We look forward to discussing this subject! Thanks for your input! :)

    Pull out the pots and pans... how do you portion each cake to figure out the serving size? example for like 20, 50, or even 100 people. When is it enough cake?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 лет назад

      This knowledge is gained from experience. Just baking cakes and seeing how much batter will fill up at least 1/2 of the height of the cake pan you are making. Keep a little journal or log each time you bake and write down the amounts so you can always have them for future reference. You may waist a little batter in the beginning but after a short while you'll have it down! :)
