Goes right up to the top with Jeff Beck for the best cover version. Of course, this is entirely different. Love to hear the blend of instruments. Really, really good work form the distinguished Lahti Symphony!
You've obviously never heard the ELP version ... or the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra ... or for that matter the original Blues Brothers version.
@@thedolphin5428 Didn't like it, eh? I plead guilty to not hearing ELP. I was never really a fan - but what the Hell, with RUclips I'll check it out. Heard the versions by the Qatar Philharmonic which was fine, and the Blue Brothers Band is fine too. Heck, I even like Ray Anthony and that crazy break in the middle. But for me, so far, this is the stuff. :)
Jeff Beck is awesome, period. But his version is a faster tempo, like many non-orchestral versions, and that diminishes some of the 'cool factor'; in my opinion, the original tempo is key! Mancini knew exactly what he was doing, he knew that a genuine badass doesn't need a fast-tempo pop beat. Same as Tchaikovsky knew it when he wrote the antagonists theme in Peter and The Wolf. That's why the Blues Brothers version is badass! Duck Dunn just lays it down relentlessly like a true badass. The Art of Noise, ditto.
Hmm. And here I thought Prokofiev wrote "Peter and the Wolf. :) I get what you're saying: Yes, most rockers - The Ventures, Dick Dale, Roy Buchanan, and all of the others tend to take it too fast. It doesn't mean I can't enjoy the performance for what it is, but what they're doing doesn't capture the cool, noir feel of the original. I agree that the tempo and "attitude" of the Blues Brothers Band did the tune justice - but I missed the massed brass of the big-band-influenced original. The Lahti symphony caught that - without becoming the lumbering dinosaur a full symphony orchestra can often become in lighter music. (Arthur Fiedler, et. all.) i haven't heard "The Art of Noise" yet. I'll add them to my "to-be-listened to" list. (One can only hear the theme from Peter Gunn so many times at one sitting before the eyes widen and drool starts streaming from the mouth. You've got to spread it out a little.) @@Doofus5152

Let's hear it for a perfect jazzy ostinato! Peter Gunn TV show was produced by Blake Edwards. This began a 30 year relationship between Mancini and Edwards.
