Definitely the first time I've been moved in a wax museum. Even though some of the exhibits were quite primitive, the message behind them comes through loud and clear. Such an awesome experience. Glad we got to see it together.

i agree even after showing the sign that clearly said not advised for under 12s to see (due to the nature) as soon as he walked downstairs ya could hear a kid as young as 7 go Omg momm y look whats that whats happening ? like I know its part of history but if ya were a parent and had that warning dont take kids down there :( sad enough for adults and pretty graphic

It’s crazy because I’m somehow related to Emmitt Till, I found out a few years ago that he’s my cousin.
I am glad that the museum creators didn’t skip the gory or downplay the horrific things that have happened to black people in the past. They deserve to be presented in all their detail so that younger generations can be educated and not repeat the same awful things. I remember being so ashamed to be white at school when we learnt about slavery. I also remember being massively proud to have a best friend who was black. We still need to learn to judge people by their actions, not by the colour of their skin or their sexuality.

When I was younger we went there every year for a school trip. It’s very educational I loved this as a child yes the graphic images are hard to look at, but everyone should know there history.

I'm a middle-aged southern white male and I remember my history classes in public school and slavery was barely taught and certainly played down. There's always two sides to a history lesson, the victors and the victims. It mostly seems we only learn the victors' version of history. This museum is vital to learning the truth of our past. Thanks for sharing.

We are erasing history by removing the civil war statues in the south.

Some say we lost the Vietnam war, maybe we should quit displaying that wall with all those hero's names on it and all those statues of the men who gave their lives. Lots of Vietnamese live here Im sure it offends them knowing those men dropped bombs on their homeland and killed their friends and family. Or Maybe get rid of the 20 dollar bill because Andrew Jackson is on it , you know he is the one that instigated the trail of tears that caused my ancestors to leave their homes and walk to places unknown , die along the way . Even went against the Supreme Court ruling saying it was against their law to do that to the Natives of the Cherokee Choctaw Muscogee Seminole & Chickasaw. Yet Im sure you use your money every chance you get as well as everyone else with not a thought as to the pain and heartache this man caused many many people of a race!

Thanks so much for the video, Jacob and Dan. Whomever says slavery didn't exist or "it wasn't that bad" should visit this museum or at least watch the video. It's hard to look at certain exhibits but it's part of history just like the business owners, and the right to vote, Underground Railroad, the activists, and African History, etc.. It's a balance of good and bad.

I love that this place exists, its an interesting way to teach visitors about some fascinating and important history that they probably don't know much about. Thanks for doing this video! I wouldn't have known about this place otherwise!

Watched this last night and it's haunting me today. I work at a country club where many families (old money) brag about tracing their families back to the colonies. I walk outside into the frozen air after serving WASPS all day, and on my way home I see so many homeless black people. It just gives me a sick feeling. How many humans were owned by those ancestors? And how many retain the same wealth made on the backs of other humans? It's sickening to think about. These are people who are still on top.

Growing up in a Baltimore City public school, we went to this museum every year for Black History month. I think they need to move it to a better location tho and expand it.

From what I was taught in school to the things I learned about on my own after seeking out the information I'm starting to have a completely different outlook of my America.

Well, you can blame them. Even in those times, many people voiced opinions about these horrors, wrote books, plays and new articles + tried to organise against them. The thing that stayed consistent with today's values is that people in general just went with the crowd, no matter who was saying it was incorrect behaviour.
Remember back then the adults were the offsprings and results of the British.....colonial america was British people that started their own country and ran wild with their OWN RULES

This was one of the most powerful museums I have ever been too.
I would love to take my child here one day.. How strong our ancestors are.. and how they would want us to change the way we live.
Have to admit, Black peoples museums in Maryland can be brutally honest about slavery. If you are in the area, be sure to visit the Slave Museum in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Slavery was not just some historical quirk, it was a vicious and "Peculiar Institution".

I went to the Blacks In Wax museum on a class trip in December of 1997. our charter bus full of students from West Philadelphia High School travelled to Baltimore to tour the museum. It wasn't at all what I expected, it was more. I left there with a different impression of it than I had at the beginning. as a (then) 15 year old Black teenager from West Philadelphia, I was proud.
Jacob, I implore you to visit the Emmet Till memorial site in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. There is a lot to be learned from material like this, Jabob, and you portrayed this place in a respectful manner.

This is such an amazing museum. I'd love to see it get a restoration, because this is so very important to teach those who may not truly realize the weight of our history.

I thought this museum looked familiar and I realized my dad took me here when I was around 9 or 10 and it freaked me out especially the ship, I got real bad nightmares from it.

im late to this video, but i just wanted to say i’m so happy they not only focused on the slave aspect of black history, but when we were kings and queens and also how we’ve power-housed our way for “a seat at the table”. black history doesn’t start nor end with how we were belittled, degraded, and humiliated. thank you for showing this.
The pregnant woman one gets me emotional everytime I go. I have went twice. Last time last year I went and forgot about the pregnant slave and I cried and almost felt like I was going to throw up when I saw it

It’s important for people to see this museum. Even tho it’s heartbreaking it needs to be seen.
This is a fantastic museum. It’s not supposed to be “oh white people suck” it’s supposed to show the nightmares that black people went through so people can understand history more.
I noticed the kids of colour that were there
And I realised how difficult it must be for parents to take their kids to a place like that

@@theavastark6463 im very much aware of the slave trades around Africa being as I'm south african. They exist everywhere indonesia, China, Thailand, India, Spain and the list goes on, more than anything it's just sad. I'm not disagreeing with you but it doesn't mean we should disgard one of history's most impactful events, the African slave trade set course to years of history and even "created a new type of African" (African American) it even shifted how africa began to be run. The largest robbery in human history is actually the robbery of Africa itself. My point is the way forward is not to forget about slavery or in your words call it "self-pity" because maybe we wouldn't have to talk so much about it if society had changed.

Thanks so much for giving us this opportunity to learn so much more about our dark and horrible past in America by touring this museum. To some it may be very hard to understand the true hardships people had to endure or witness simply because of the color of their skin. Thank you for the lesson and history.

I remember I visited this museum when I was in the 3rd grade, in 36 years old now. But the memory is still etched in my brain and the tears. A wonderful painful experience.

It sickens me to think this is how things were back then. Just because of their skin color, I don’t understand why. We are all made the same, our blood is the same, everything about us is the same, only our skin color and that doesn’t make it right to be racist towards someone. This video actually made me tear up, I can’t even imagine what all the people had to go through back then, the suffering, the pain. I thank God that things have changed no person should have to go through something like this no matter what.
I think this is good for older kids to see and see just how far we've come...even though we still need to make better progress.
Many things in that museum really gave me a visual picture of how messed up people treated African Americans,people should go here to know that info and concept to teach them we are all equal.
I think they should have museums like this all over the nation as a teaching tool. To teach people to never have history repeat itself. To show the only g rated part of history but the dark and ugly truth as well so everyone young and old how much our ancestors overcame and how far weve come.
Seeing what these people did makes me so angry! I wish I could find who started all this “stealing and owning people” thing and pop them upside the head!

I went to this museum when I was in the 4th grade and my grandma wouldn't let me continue the tour because of how graphic it was but it has always stuck with me. I plan to go back as soon as I can

I actually went to that museum a few years back. It was instresting to walk threw and learn about black history and understand what my ancestors went threw.
Another great video Carpetbagger! I am glad there is a museum like this to showcase the horrors of what really happened during times of slavery. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it and I think that we need graphic reminders of slavery, the holocaust, etc. so that we don't ever sink this low again. Though I do fear that we will, after all we are humans and fallible. Can't believe the graphics in this museum like the penises and labia in the lynching section! And the rape of that woman, and the chained up branding, oh my...

Right at that very intersection(North ave. and Bond st.) we installed traffic signal poles and lights about 18yrs ago or so.A guy that was running this museum gave us a free tour.I was amazed and sad at the same time.This place is a great place to visit for education purposes and they don't sugar the truth.

mslaerik66 you may not know, but Irish slaves were actually treated worse than African or Native American slaves. Check it out.

mslaerik66 it's just that most people forget that the Irish were the original slaves imported and most were NOT indentured. An ancestor of mine (Zion Murphy) was kidnapped from County Cork, Ireland, when he was a young child and sold as a slave. There was no indenture there. Later, he, like many others including Africans, were able to buy themselves back by working extra and essentially paying for their implied worth.
mslaerik66 there is an old saying in America, it was found typically written as a warning posted at pubs, inns, eateries, etc. "No blacks, dogs or Irish". The Irish were lower than even dogs back then.. Furthermore the term "luck of the Irish" comes from the English, it originated as a joke, something along the lines of the Irish are lucky to be alive or that the English hadn't killed them all yet. Don't even get me started on the term "Paddy", now that's a rabbit's hole.
when i get older, im taking my kids to this museum so they understand that this is wrong and you need to love everyone no matter their skin color.

Hey Dan Thank you for posting this. I grew up in Baltimore but this place did not exist at the time. I live in Baltimore County now and I was surprised to learn that my daughter had gone here on a field trip in middle school. She has graduated from College but I asked her about this place and she is still effected by what she saw. Long story short they did a piece about this museum on This American Life and now my grown daughter and I plan to go together. I really appreciate that you took the time to go. This is ALL of our history as Americans and we must be brave enough to face it. Thanks Again!!! God Bless.

Being a minority I find it all borderline...to see the pain an humiliation of all the injustice...I've seen a breeding plantation where one slave fathered hundreds of children like cattle also a breeding post where the women are chained...its in I'll. It's called the old slave house it also had an underground tunnel that ran from the house to the woods an the slaves were kept in the attic so u can imagine the heat an cold an small closet like rooms...so painful to see an this man said how proud he was that the museum is on his block...typical whitey😠🤨😥😞
