Very underrated singer and her performances are masters. She is still performing in concerts and writing and recording new albums in her mid 80"s. An amazing talent...she deserves much more credit than she gets. Bravo
I saw Petula sing Fool on the Hill in 1968 at the old Spectrum Arena in Philadelphia. The concert was sold out. When she finished singing this...everyone there gave her a tremendous standing ovation. It was an incredible evening.
Possiably her best perfromance on TV. I remember seeing this on Ed Sullian. I remember thinking she was crying when she turned her back to the camera. She's the best comtempory singer ever!
There certainly was a lot of ladies in the Sixties and Seventies who were very good singers indeed. Yes of course I am writing about Dusty Springfield,Lulu, Sandie Shaw, Judy Durham,Cilla Black ect. However NONE of them could ever beat Petula Clark for the different genres of music they sang. This video of Petula shows her singing her own interpretation of the Beatles classic "Fool On The Hill" and it is so,so different to the original version sang by Paul McCartney. Yet with Petula's instinctive voice she carries it off with great aplomb. Her notes are (as always) crystal clear, on point and incredible. From a fast uptempo number such as" My Love" and "I Know A Place" to a slow romantic one "Kiss Me Goodbye" Petula is very precise in every word she sings. This is why with her vocal talents she can sing any song she wants with such marvelous clarity. And WOW!!!! Does she know how to put on a show. As Louise Dean says above Petula is PERFECTION.
I can't believe that this fabulous video has had only 2700 views. It's absolutely marvelous. I've seen just about every Petula Clark You Tube video, and none of them come close to this!
The same month that this aired on The Ed Sullivan Show, Nov. 1969, in England the BBC chose Pet's Royal Albert Hall concert from a month earlier to introduce colour service to their tv network. It aired on Nov.15, 1969-Petula's birthday! Sadly, like many fantastic tv specials of the day, the tapes are either lost or long ago erased.
PETULA CLARK CBE: PETULA WITH ONE OF THE GREATEST EVER PERFORMANCES OF ALL TIME. UNEQUALLED IN TALENT AND WITH OUTSTANDING AND SUPERIOR VOCALS PETULA CLARK CBE STANDS IN NO ONES SHADOW (AND I MEAN NO ONES.) ULTRA -BRILLIANT. * PLEASE WATCH THE FULL VERSION ON YOU TUBE IT IS WITHOUT DOUBT PETULA CLARK AT HER ULTIMATE BEST.
She is so good that she is beyond anyone knowing what to do with her. Kinda like Karen Carpenter So she ends up with this fantastic voice and hardly anyone knows what to do with it. Because she is so far beyond anyone. And yet she ends up figuring it out by herself anyway. But never getting the total recognition she is due. But then again I think maybe she does.
What an unusual choice of material...well, nobody can accuse Pet of playing it safe and just doing all her Hatch/Trent hits even when perfoming on venues like The Ed Sullivan Show,on which this originally aired, in late 1969. Thanks so much for this posting!
How did you like that live insertion on "Spinning Round Ro Ro ......" with the Echoplex ? Pretty brave doing it live back then on the vocals. Echoplex could be very cranky. Anytime I see an old live video there are lots & lots of comments "Wow -Live" "No Auto tune" "nobody does it anymore" etc etc on & on. If no one likes it, why is it used ? Reject the crap then
She is John Lennon's favorite female singer! That is interesting. I think it's fascinating that she is singing one of the Beatles songs, and a brilliant one at that. She did it well! Unlike the American Idol people, Pet does not seem like she is disrespecting the composing skills of the Beatles. So she can change the melody in certain spots and get by with it! Go Pet, you are one of the best!
Shaun Wakefield: Well said Shaun I agree totally with you in your comment about Petula Clark. NOBODY interprets a song anywhere near as great as Petula Clark.
This song (not this recording which is nowhere near as good the original performance in England) was first sung by Petula Clark on November 15th 1969 with a Petula Clark concert broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall in London to celebrate Colour TV programs starting officially. If anyone has a copy of that performance I should love to see it again.
@@shaunwakefield9793 ALL OF US "CLARKIES" would ABSOLUTELY love to see this concert by Petula. Why on Earth did the BBC wipe such a monumental part of their (now 100 year) broadcasting history?
Loved Her, Loved Her Hate this arrangement. I can't believe how many people love it. I owned all the 45s she released but for people to say this is the best + it's better than The Beatles. I thought they were kidding - and then adding the reverb made it just sound silly.
It is a different and very distinct and very emotive version of a Beatles classic. It is sometimes really nice to have a new and alternative rendition of a very well known song. THIS is one of those times.

Underrate? I Guess you are very young. Petula was a Shining Star.

MARVELOUS Petula.
Great Singer, incredibile talent.

What a voice!
A lovely lady singing my favourite Beatles song. Thank you!
outstanding! what a performance!
She sang The fool on the hill when i seen her perform at the Waldrof Astoria and the crowd went wild with applause and a standing ovation.
When I was a kid, I would listen to my mom's Petula Clark albums.
Gorgeous dress
This the very best version of the fool on the hill i heard. Other singers couldn't compare to Petula Clark.

Vidéo amputée d'un couplet. "The man with a Thousand voices" was cut. She does sing it though.
