Thanks for the great tip. German television broadcast Beat Club around 1970 (enter like that; above all groundbreaking productions for the time), was 12 years old at the time.
Deep Purple played Highway Star in different takes (one video says 1969, very confusing), No No No, Fireball and Celebration 1969 (first appearance; still black and white) still with vocalist Rob Evans.
You can also find live performances by Jim Hendrix, The Who, Santana...
and one heavily criticized by Mannfred Mann because he was the only one of the greats who didn't play live, which stayed with me as a child.

Deep Purple founded in 1968 along with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin are considered the pioneers of Heavy Metal...Guitarist Richie Blackmore left the band and helped found the 70s Metal Group Rainbow which also featured Ronnie James Dio- an opera trained monster vocalist. Dio was also in the band Dio and sang for Black Sabbath. The original lead Singer Ian Gillan with that incredible range was eclectic- he sang the lead role of Jesus in the original Andrew Lloyd Webber "Jesus Christ Superstar" and then in 1983 he spent a year as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath. Organist John Lord later was a member of the 80s group Whitesnake which featured David Coverdale on vocals- Coverdale replaced Ian G as Deep Purple's lead singer in the later 70s....Ian Paice the drummer also was the Whitesnake drummer in the 80s....

DEEP PURPLE, "CHILD IN TIME". Late 60's mid 70's one of the best Bands of this time. Singer / Harmoica. Ian Gillan with vocal range. He was so good, that in the Rock Opera, Play he portrayed Jesus Christ in the Iconic "JESUS CHRIST SUPESTAR". Besides doing front man of Deep Purple . He does a monstrous job when he performs "I JUST WANT TOO SAY, (GETHSEMANE). This song showcased that that rock singing vocal range. Deep Purple in 1973, the Album "Machine Head", is one of those albums that every song deserves the attention of the Music world. The song 's are that good. When I seen deep purple's Child In Time I knew I was in for a treat watching you're unexpected treat.
Ian Gillan had a range of five octaves!
When this song was released some called it a controlled scream. In a since it is as he cries out in agony. But the pitch is so perfect and steady it's really just him singing vowels.
There's many versions of this song this one although not the cleanest is perhaps the most dynamic.
Highway Star is a true Gearhead song.
The song lazy is anything but.lol as it features some of their fastest music.
And I'm sure once you've heard Smoke on the Water you'll recognize it.
I grew up country still in but love my classic rock.

One of my fav hard rock bands and heavy metal pioneers, they have tons of small nuggets for sampling. Shit, this song alone can be flipped into at least 3 different beats. From the voice, drum breaks, organs, even guitars can be flipped for the experimental producers.

This will lead you to the band "Rainbow" where the guitarist (Ritchie Blackmore) leave DP and starts up his new band with Ronnie James Dio as the lead singer. "Stargazer" is their iconic classic. This spurs off where Dio goes to Black Sabbath, other DP band members go off to White Snake. This rabbit hole is going to be a fun ride for you both.

Ritchie Blackmore, one of the 4 great guitar players to come out of England in the late 60s, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and Ritchie. Yeah, there are others who came along, but these three were the giants.
Drums by Ian Paice...one of the top 5 drummers in rock. Jon Lord was the keyboard artist and Roger Glover bass. Vocals by Ian Gillian

    Deep Purple :
Ritchie Blackmore one of the greatest guitarist
Ian Gillan one of the powerful and versatile singer
John Lord amazing on the organ and Ian Paice one of the great drummer of all the time ( lefty) , Roger Glover bass, so many great songs ,to see Mandrake roots live London 1970, or Highway star!!! Smoke on the water, Lazy,Burn,Mistreated....
during a brief tour of denmark and sweden in april, in which they were still billed as roundabout, blackmore suggested a new name: "deep purple", named after his grandmother's favourite song. the group had resolved to choose a name after everyone had posted one on a board in rehearsal.

Great reaction, to a great song !! Ian informed the band he didn't want to perform this song live anymore cause he feared damage to this vocal folds, after the "MIJ Live" album, in 1972 !!

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath were THE top of the hard rock world back in the day. And Purple are still going on and releasing excellent music. Five sterling musicians all working toward the SONG -- as opposed to merely showing off. "Highway Star" should be next -- probably THE greatest driving song of all-time. So many other amazing works.

Deep Purple is one of my top 10 Bands in my 68 years, saw them a bunch of times but the version of the band you just heard, the group with Ian Gillian on vocals and Roger Glover on bass is the superior band and are the reason they are in the RR HoF. Ian Paice on drums completes the incredible rythum section. You should do the entire Machine Head album, it has the songs that made them superstars
Awesome band, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on Keyboards spearhead their onslaught. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

It can’t be stated enough how great this song is and even how much better the live BBC version is. IMO Deep Purple are the pioneers of heavy metal and hard rock. A great classic song. You’ve missed a lot of you haven’t heard Deep Purple. Check out Highway Star, Space Truckin, Smoke On The Water, My Woman From Tokyo, all iconic songs with riffs to match. ✌️

This song was written about the horror of war, a protest song. Everyone in the band is a craftsman on their instruments, a true masterpiece! ian Gillan has a range of 41/2-5 octaves amazing singer Pavarotti was a fan! As others have said if you can get the live video 1970 you can see this and I believe the sound is better.

I missed this post somehow, so a late review, but I promise it's worthwhile. Two great songs from them are "Soldier of Fortune" and "When a Blind Man Cries". I'm 58 so a bit young, but I have a friend who is 15 years older. He saw all the top shows in the late 60's and early 70's, including Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, and more. In his opinion, the most talented band and the best show he ever went to was Deep Purple. Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore are both legends, but clearly it's Ian's vocals that set this band apart. BTW, this is a song that is absolutely better with the live version, and I rarely say that. Anyway...great review, I think I'm going to join your Patreon because I love your work.

If you enjoy those keyboards give "Lazy" a listen. Both the studio and live versions are good, but the live version is my favorite. Jon Lord's organ playing is off the charts. He is the master of the organ.

Saw em live ($6.50) in 72". Wore out their first 8-track too. DP and Black Sabbath were the original Metal bands. Agree with other posters that you should react to the live BBC video performance, think it was 1969.

Deep Purple was 1/3rd of the "Unholy Trinity" The other 2 being Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Those 3 bands were the originators of hard rock and early heavy metal.
