      Thanks Colt, and no worries my friend! Looking forward to seeing your Atmos setup, and I’ll probably be a little envious lol 🙂

    YOU STILL NEED A GREAT STEREO MIX!

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Год назад

      I'd argue that, but I cannot. Because you're right. Atmos may take over but stereo will still be around and needed for at least a few years, if not more. But time will tell =)

    I have a Phillips atmos setup, it's awesome for movies, but for music I turn it off. It's hard to focus on the music, on different instruments and I can't get used to it. Only as a casual listener it can be nice, but you have to keep it in the background, because it is hard for a conversation if sounds come from all over the place.

      Oh, that’s interesting. I have a Denon Atmos receiver but I need to upgrade my Apple TV to the 4K model before I can check anything out in Atmos (aside from via headphones)
      But I have heard that the Atmos mixes are very hit and miss. Some are amazing and many are terrible. I chalk it up to be similar to the early days of stereo where no one really knew what they were doing yet, hence some very weird mixes lol.
      My personal approach to it so far in my experiments has been to look at it more like “enhanced stereo”. I don’t feel the need to have things spinning around the room or any of that stuff. Just seems like it would be more of a distraction then anything else.
      But only time will tell how things work out and what a typical Atmos mix will sound like once the “Shinny new toy” aspect wears off 🙂

    Honestly, I'm waiting for RUclips to support spatial audio in both RUclips and RUclips music. I will go with whatever specs that are listed there since those are my top platforms for release.
    I'm also waiting for Atmos to release a rendering setup that works on Windows. Currently, the integration with the DAWs on the windows platform and the rendering application for spatial audio is just not there as far as I know. Please let me know if this has changed recently.

      Might be a long ways off before YT supports Atmos, if ever, but you never know. They DID add 5.1 support a number of months ago. I've actually been playing with the idea of uploading atmos tutorial videos in 5.1. The only issue is that they play back VERY quietly in comparison to standard stereo uploads.
      I haven't used a windows PC in close to 20 years so I can't fully answer that question. As far as I'm aware tho on a windows system you have to run two computers. One with your DAW and the other just to run the renderer. Which honestly sounds like a very expensive nightmare... yikes, no thanks lol

    Yeah it’s the new standard; coming from a industry/engineering perspective and listener perspective. The technology has hit ubiquity since its advent in 2012 and studios have been mixing since 2016 as a sweet spot, with today (2023) kicking off the new era of sound that is taking music from essentially mono to stereo.
    And yes, once Spotify finishes their infrastructure upgrades to support encode/decode at scale for Atmos, stereo will fully become a legacy listening format

      I wonder how long before Spotify does this. Colt said in his videos that they are building Atmos studios, so I can’t imagine it being too far off.
      It is exciting though!! I’ve been having both a blast, and sometimes head into desk moments lol. It’s almost like having to relearn how to mix again, but not at the same time… if that makes ANY sense lol 😂

    The thrust of the argument for atmos really rubs me the wrong way, often because its framed as - whether we like it or not… which is not the way to make me want to support a product. If Atmos is so amazing it will find its way into the market without having to be emotionally blackmailing. Instead, it seems the success of Atmos is almost entirely centred on exclusivity and attempting to close off the lucrative arms of the industry to those who refuse to adopt it. Currently, despite what has been said about the ability to listen to Atmos in headphones or on lesser equiped systems, Atmos is only truly impressive on multi- speaker systems in purpose built rooms. Otherwise it is unremarkable and quite honestly a bit weird sounding. While many see this as some incredible new and essential development, most rightly regard it as unnecessary and cynical. It will be interesting to see what happens when all the hype is over and its left to consumer demand to determine whether its truly commercially viable or a flop, at least in the domestic market.

      You make some interesting points Jon. I'm excited about Atmos (I bought my first surround system over 20 years ago) but I can see your point. As someone who hates automatic cars and has been driving stick for as long as I've been driving, it's the same thing. New cars with manual trannys (except for a couple of cars) no longer exist, so I feel like automatic has been rammed down my throat as well.
      I mentioned this to someone else in the comments and the thing is, any streaming services that offers, or will offer atmos music will be able to see how many people are choosing Atmos over stereo and vice versa. If in a year of two most people are picking stereo, then odds are the streaming services will stop pushing and investing in it. On the flip side though if most people are choosing atmos then it will be here to stay for music.
      You're right about headphones and a multispeaker setup. Most people will not invest in the ladder. I don't find the binaural to be great. But apparently the shape of your ears or inner ears determine the experience you'll get. My current receiver is atmos ready (5.1.2) but until I upgrade my Apple TV to the 4K model and add some ceiling speakers I can only get Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. But there were some great mixes done for DVD-Audio and Super-CD, but also some very "meh" at best ones.
      The other issue for studios is the expense. Many (or likely most) home studios will only be able to work on headphones. I know I'm in that camp for probably a good 2 years, so It's going to be interesting.
      I can understand though why many think its a fad, or crap lol. I'm excited for it and I hope it sticks, but only time will tell my friend =)

      I feel that in addition to this, a lot of talking points that are made by the Atmos evangelists come off extremely similar to the crypto/AI/tech bros saying that the future is fait accompli.

  • @qlyde
    @qlyde Год назад +1

    Yeah I'm thinking small production studios should start investing in really good headphones at bare minimum for binaural producing, and small mixing environments should start going for an Atmos setup with something like the Kali Audio Speakers, you can go with the IN-8's (3 way) as your L, C, R and LP-6's (2 way) as you surround & heights, add a KRK, Yamaha or Adam Audio Sub and you can build an Atmos speaker setup for under $4000, you'll need stands, cables and an extra interface as well, so closer to $5000, but that's not terrible if you're actually doing paid mixing and you'll be one of the only studios in your city to offer Atmos this early. You'll pay that off in the first year even if you have a really small client list. Even if you have no clients, $5k isn't a giant risk to add Atmos into your setup and start building your career/client list as an Atmos mixer or producer before everyone else jumps on! Thx for the vid!

      Well you’re not wrong. (I’m guessing those are USD figures) and there’s always the option of a loan if one needs to setup for Atmos sooner rather then later.
      Much harder to swallow in Canadian currency. For the setup I’d like to go with I’d be at $5000 for speakers before tax and anything else. My numbers for myself put me at close to $10k.
      But you’re right, if someone wants to invest it’s not unattainable, though could still prove difficult for many, and that’s where headphones will have to come in for many. There is also the space considerations as well. Speaking for myself again, my space is 13x20, which is a decent size for an Atmos setup… the trick is also the fact I have drums and guitars and amps that don’t have another room to live in.
      But at the end of the day, anyone who wants to put in an Atmos setup will figure out a way to make it all work 🙂

    • @qlyde
      @qlyde Год назад +1

      @@EverythingMusicRecording Yeah roughly USD converted from Canadian Retail Prices! I want to do it, but it is a big step, I've been working in Logic with the Binaural Renderer and it's good, but it's not amazing, certainly not as immersive as Pro Spatial Mixes on AirPods or how engineers have been describing working in a 7.1.4 setup!

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Год назад

      Lol oh I hear you 100%
      I’m in the exact same boat. My iMac and audio interface are also pushing 9 years old so I need to replace them before I can even do an Atmos setup, so it’s gonna be headphones for me as well for about 2 years.
      Do you have an Atmos receiver? I have one in my living room so I just need to upgrade my Apple TV to the 4K model and add a pair of height speakers and then I’ll at least have a 5.1.2 setup I can reference and check things on. Which will be a big help for the time being.
