    I built my atmos room about a year ago... with focals actually based on your recommendation of them. I have 9.1.4 and got a chance to build the room from the ground up with the help of the Dolby team which was awesome. Once I heard it for the first time I was hooked and couldn't sleep for weeks because new ideas would pop into my head all night. I took the plunge for one reason and one reason only and that was art. Art will always win and this a phenomenal move forward in the art of music and will give all of us whole new perspective on what is possible. I'm glad you're on board and I'm excited to see more videos.

    One of the most frustrating things about being a producer is putting my love into each sound and having it in a “parking spot” lol where the lovely low end is chopped off, or the stereo image is mono’d etc. If this allows each sound to be free that’s super exciting.

    Breaking my brain watching and listening to this. Colt, been watching your videos for a while now… absolutely love your content and you heart to serve the audio mixing community, thanks! When mixing for special audio, I would only assume that you are having to take moments in stereo and ensure that along the process the spatial decisions are not adversely affecting the basic stereo mix on the basics of sound systems. It’s mind blowing! Phase, masking, balance, power, punch, etc… all the things that can and do create challenges for the stereo mixer must be quite the challenge for the atmos mixer to get translation everywhere… hats off to you guys!

If you're allowed to and you indeed worked on the full mix for Harry's House can you tell me the max channal count? Especially for As It Was. I'd love to hear it in it's full channal count. Can't get enough of that little ditty. It's got the soft cool chill warm caring gifting quiet jentle little vibes of my 23 year old next door neighbor Ciara. It's got her giggly girlie teanie silly happy bubbly 23 year old girl vibes to it too. As soon as I hear the little intro synth I feel that bubbly smile come on my face I get when ever I'm around Ciara. Even the different layors of the vocals seem to suggest different layors of her vibes. She giggled when I told her about this by the way. I had to as I keep commenting this on every single As It Was vid.

    I hear what he's saying, but I'm sitting here shaking my head... there are sound engineers at post production studios in Los Angeles and New York that are some of the most brilliantly amazing talent, and they have been working with ATMOS since its inception - some helped design it. I can't, for the life of me, understand why you're not talking to them - this is nothing new for them - they live, eat, and breath spatial.
    btw - Great interview, I loved hearing him talk about producers asking how they could go back to their rooms after hearing, and musicians being brought to tears. That's what happens when it's real.

  • @shan5445
    @shan5445 6 месяцев назад

    It must be good mixing in Dolby Atmos and the big studios seem to be pining because you may have to go to them for big mixes. But the way how the world is today is you can have templates in your door like Pro Tools template, Logic template, Ableton template, Studio One template, FL template where you can press a button and with AI can put the sounds where you want in a single click. Then it opens the floodgate for small studios to take ADVANTAGE of Dolby Atmos and everyone can eat again :)

  • @masonbeard7209
    @masonbeard7209 Год назад

    really neat conversion, and i can see how atmos/spacial will become the norm once the technology to play those mixes through headphones gets better… but quite frankly every atmos mix i’ve listened to through headphones just sounds so much less emotional. haven’t listened through a room/speaker setup, i’m sure that’s much cooler, but nobody except the person mixing the track is listening through an atmos mixing rig. really not a fan of how early apple is making these moves, when the technology is still so new and far from perfected

    Thanks for another great video Colt🤘🏻! I do have a question about 7.1.4 and 9.1.4 you guys talk about in this video. What made it obvious for you that you can better go for 9.1.4 than 7.1.4?

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  Год назад +2

      So there will be videos coming on this soon, but basically the way that Mike looks at the left/right picture, that the sides are the new left and right. That means that the additional two speakers that are the Wides are important to help know exactly what’s happening in the new Left to right spectrum. So in 7.1.4 when you pan, something from the left to the left side, there’s a pretty big gap between those speakers. However, in 9.1.4 when you pan something from the left, to the left wide, to the left side, you’re getting much more accurate information on that paining. If most listeners are going to be listening on airpods, then the translation to airpods should matter most, since most listeners won't have a proper spatial audio rig. @ColtCapperrune  Год назад +1

      It’s a great question! So every song I’m currently producing, I’m producing for Atmos. So there’s a bunch of different things you could do. Firstly, the more ways you can capture a source the better. If it’s just an acoustic and a vocal, I would likely stereo mic, the acoustic, and then use two spaced pairs for room microphones. One pair behind the player, one in front of the player. And that’s how I would capture a single acoustic guitar for Atmos. I think the creative side of productions, and tracking techniques are going to evolve quickly over the next few years and experimentation will be key.

Have you tried it and listened back in an Atmos studio or on Spatial Audio headphones (earbuds) to see if it translates? Or do you know of others who've tried? Also, for those who aren't on an award winning level, shouldn't the Atmos headphone (binaural) stereo mixdown still sound better than a regular stereo mix? And do you think someone will find a way (or Apple will make it possible) to mix directly into their Spatial Audio format rather than them having to modify the Atmos format. Maybe Atmos can modify the Spatial Audio format as well; once other headphone manufacturers get the tech, the price drops, and more people start consuming SA media through headphones than on speakers.

    • @SamHocking
      @SamHocking Год назад

      I don't think we are ever likely to see mass global adoption of an Atmos speaker setup for translation to ultimately affect the bottom dollar or mixing Atmos. Studios love to talk about translation and that of course matters in their own space, but theres no translation from 9.1.4 speaker system to 2.0 headphones so for 99% of artists all that matters is headphones because hardly anyone has a system capable of mistranslating a 9.1.4 mixed song anyway. At best most Atmos devices are variations on 2.1 and 5.1 like soundbar and TVs . To put in perspective there are only 20 million Atmos sound bars globally. So insignificant Netflix dont even acknowledge Atmos speaker users as even a growing market beyond what they experience with surround growth.
      Still, nobody knows what will happen in the future, but I dont think its likely the planet will change buying habits and suddenly be running 9.1.4 speakers. A soundbar at best. The car could be an interesting growth though but I cant believe a car Atmos system can translate a studio anyway.

    I could see convincing consumers to add 2 more speakers behind them at most, but most of this is likely going to be consumed on airpods. That means two channels of audio going into two ear holes.

    He never directly answered the question to the bedroom producer., but what I've gathered from this is that you can pretty much forget about doing your own mixes. For starters, it's going to cost north of $10k for monitors and probably a new interface; you can't do it on headphones; you're going to need to spend money on treating your room (and you'll have to take the bed and dresser out of the room). Essentially, you'll have to hire someone who has an Atmos room to do your mixing for you. This is also going to be a problem for studios that are set up with a studio/control room configuration, because you're going to have to put a center speaker in front of the window between the rooms.

    The more I think about this atmos move, the more I have the feeling this is a push back from the "high value" music industry to take back their market share from the independents. I don't believe atmos will be big like stereo, because you can only have an atmos setup at home, not on the road where most listen to music and not everyone is cares about atmos, the music world is tooooo BIG. This might just be a move, you are either in it or you can no longer release your music on the big platforms, so a lot of independents, beginners, bedroom producers/mix engineers will loose out because they can not afford it. Mixing in atmos will eventually become very expensive. It's like the vinyl pressing industrie, big labels bought up months in advanced pressing time, so small labels have to wait 6 months or more to press their records. Luckily here in EU, there are now a vinyl presses that only works with small independent labels. The same might happen with independents in the music industrie. Someone might want to start a new platform where all independents and independent labels can unite in streaming and selling stereo music.
