  • Question of the day:
What episode of Who had you freaking out as much as I did in this one?
(If you liked the shirt from last week you can find it here: shop.critrole....)
    If you're new:
I do reactions to things I enjoy kinda sporadically.
    Hope you enjoy :)

    Some light housekeeping:
One scene that wasn’t in the reaction but I wanted to acknowledge here is the scene where the real Doctor and Donna are trying to figure out the imposters and the Doctor said something along the lines that “people from her planet can believe two completely different things at the same time.” And I LOVED that (I am walking that). This was a really hard reaction to edit, tried my best

I believe this was all they managed to film with Bernard Cribbens before he died.
They started filming with him in May 2022 in Camden (in London) and video and photos were posted on social media and made the newspapers. He died on the 27th July and some reports say he completed his scenes only 2 weeks before he died. A true legend of the screen.
I have watched Dr Who since 1963 when I was 6 - and your reaction reminded me we all used to watch the scary scenes through our fingers and from behind the sofa. That is how Dr Who was originally written - to have scary parts every once in a while. Keep up the great reactions.

The first properly scary episode of Doctor Who in a long time.
That scene where we're first clued into the Not-Doctor and Not-Donna is just brilliant tension, how they simply walk into the room and... observe. They don't do anything directly frightening but their mere presence is uncanny.
And of course, "My arms are too long." That's just not something anyone should say but it's not a direct threat either. It leaves you in this unknown for so long and then commits to the grotesque in a way you weren't expecting.

When I've heard it the first time I literally got chills, I wonder If that forshadows something we're about to see 👀👀

I feel like I'm very much on your wavelength. Glad that the Flux and things aren't just being swept under the rug.
And I was also reminded of Midnight with the unsettled feeling and with these creatures. A lifeform that logically shouldn't be able to exist in the environment it's in, and yet it does exist. And it's trying to take over someone else's identity. The thing in Midnight even went for the most frightened passenger, perhaps because her adrenaline was pumping and she was easier to copy, and then for the Doctor, who was surely doing the next most thinking in the group. I have to wonder if these creatures are intentionally similar or just coincidentally similar.

I loved this episode. It reminded me of a classic story called _The Ark in Space_ where the Doctor and Sarah have invited Unit's Harry into the TARDIS to take him to the moon and back (as he didn't believe the TARDIS could travel). But he fiddles with the console and sends them catapulting into the future. The TARDIS lands on a seemingly abandoned space station with endless white corridors. It's a very creepy story. This must have been an influence.
And then we get hints of Midnight, Silence in the Library, and The Impossible Planet. Brilliant story.

I loved this episode! It felt like peak Davies channeling a bit of Moffat and Classic Who. Just what I want!
Small counterpoint to your point on 13 being the most emotionally closed-off Doctor that we've seen. I'd argue for 11 - after Amy and Rory, before meeting Victorian Clara. He spent *years* alone and even changed his Tardis console room to reflect the distancing from his former self. The Snowmen episode is itself a metaphor for Clara melting his frozen hearts and beginning the healing process. There were lots of Dickensian references and analogs in that episode, too (Scrooge, Miss Havisham, etc), and Dickens remains top-class in exploring 'the warming/closing of human emotion' as a theme. A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations are still studied in British schools to this day.

16:26 Sadly not, Bernard tragically passed during the filming of this very episode, he was supposed to have more scenes too so, unless they've filmed the next episode out of order, he won't and we'll likely find out when Donna returns that Wilf has passed. Hence why they had the tribute to him at the very end credits, personally I thought it would've been better at the start.
20:52 I DO know cos there was a teaser trailer for next week so DO NOT WATCH IT
You mentioned Midnight, there's been some speculation that those elastic people are the same race but they've evolved to mimic people physically now. Midnight is definitely my favourite Who episode, it was so well done, probably very light budget but creepy as all hell and a very clever plot device.
I'm surprised you never once mentioned the whole Mavity of the situation but you did handle it with great Mavitas.

I wasn't too sure how I felt about it at first, but the more I think about it the more I've decided I really like this episode. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up in conversations alongside "Parting of the Ways", "Midnight", "Turn Left" and "The Waters of Mars" as one of Russell's Who masterpieces. It's such a well-crafted episode, with a great atmosphere, excellent performances, and some legitimately unsettling monsters - the Not-Things have stuck with me in a way that no Who monster has since the Boneless from "Flatline", and that was almost 10 years ago! With the exception of some dodgy greenscreen when it comes to the spaceship's corridors, I really can't think of anything to fault this episode on. And seeing Wilf at the end was such a delight, it's sad that this is the last we'll see of him, but I'm so glad we got to see Bernard Cribbins one last time. RIP you absolute legend.

    1. Wilf Returning, that just made my day and I teared up when he reunited with The Doctor after 15 years, it really is sad this is his last moment in Doctor Who
    2. The Doctor’s anger when he’s stuck and his guilt from The Flux and that it wasn’t his fault. David is just a phenomenal actor and imo he’s probably the best actor to portray the character, that’s my opinion. I’m not saying that the other actors/actress didn’t do a good job they each brought their own take to the character and made their performances fantastic in their own right. But I just think David can bring out the humanity in The Doctor so well
I love that these things are an amalgamation of The Bonless, The Midnight entity and The Gangers

I honestly had no idea we would get Wilf in this so it was a genuine surprise to see him here. Trailers suck. I could be wrong. I will find out after when I actually watch them I guess. But BBC is all about fanfair so and making headlines to try and increase viewership when the episodes air.

I heard this week will be the last time we see Donna's grandfather. He passed before the next episode and is only going to be referenced in the future 😢

I was really glad they kept this episode out of the advertising for the three specials. They heavily promoted NPH, and gave some promo on The Star Beast, but there was absolutely nothing shown about this one... and I think if they had promoted it in any way, it would've spoiled the story a lot... and I'm so glad they didn't, as it was one of the best episodes of Doctor Who in years.

I don’t know if you’ll read this, Shayla, but having seen how you reacted to David’s Regeneration in The End of Time, I would keep a box of tissues nearby because you’re going to relive it again. Because this really is the final time.

I mean, I didn't really enjoy the direction of flux or the timeless child, but I don't really believe in retconning it. It happened and we shouldn't really stay away from it just because some people didn't like it. I have faith in Russel to turn it into something great, for me at least!

Hey Im sorry, I've seen some of your old reactions and now recently this one. I'm only asking because I'm a caring human being and just want to make sure you're okay. Is everything aright? Are you healthy? are you happy? Just making sure. Cause i know you just came back to reacting. You seem happy but also im wondering if your healthy cause you look different than two years ago. And I realize time changes people, but I want to remind you to take care of yourself and that you're worthy of love and care. Anyways, wishing you well and good health. I was afraid to bring it up because i certainly dont want to be rude. But I wanted you to know that people care for your well-being. People should always look out for their fellow human beings, whether we're friends in RL or simply acquainted through the interwebs :)
Sending you blessings and happy holidays 🎄

    POSSIBLE SPOILER POSSIBLE SPOILER
Someone said an interesting theory, what if The Toymaker arrived exactly at the same times Jodie's regenerate, and created the illusion of David Tennant, what if it never was him, what if it was N'cuti since the regeneration, but he made this Illusion, which would explain why he is so "different" (not in a bad way don't worry) from his previous era

Geez, Donna asking The Doctor what he's been through since she left. I mean, where to begin? That's the entirety of the Moffat and Chibnall runs. That's Time Lord Victorious and the impossible girl and marrying River and getting caught in a transporter loop for billions of years in his confession dial. That's Trenzalore and being a woman and the 50th anniversary special and the Pandorica and the Flux and discovering a hidden past and The Silence and the Zygon Inversion speech. That's trying to reform Missy and losing Bill Potts and accidentally creating a full blown super hero and rebooting the universe and fish fingers & custard and Robin Hood and Demon's Run and a flesh double and Tesla and relocating warring aliens to a human high school and vulture people faking his death. That's Yaz falling in love with The Doctor and Captain Jack returning and Me and The Hybrid and regenerating as The Master and a term in a Jadoon prison and learning he didn't destroy Gallifrey and The Master destroying Gallifrey and meeting The Curator and speaking to The TARDIS in human form and befriending a sapient universe in the form of a frog. That's the centuries between his two different meetings with Amy/Rory/River in The Impossible Astronaut and reuniting with Jo/Ace/Tegan and meeting Kate and The Brigadier dying then returning as a Cyberman and Madame Vastra/Jenny/Strax and all the comics/novels/video games/Big Finish audio adventures during that time and meeting the first Doctor during his regeneration...

It's really just a guess, but I'm still half convinced that regenerating into Ten was from outside influence. And that would be something cleared up next special. But I guess we'll see.

He didn’t regenerate into 10, he regenerated into 14 with the same face as ten. But they are different incarnations with different personality traits

    • @rngwrldngnr
      @rngwrldngnr 8 месяцев назад

@@peaceunion5316 to an extent, yes, but that's been minor enough that it's ambiguous to me if that's what's going on or not. Obviously there's only so much time to work with in 3 specials, so we wouldn't necessarily expect more time devoted to that.
If it is outside influence, then it could be the reveal that Tennant is playing the 14th Doctor in a similar manner to Sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison playing the 13th Doctor, where the changes in personality are more due to there being so much more history that the Doctor has lived through in the meantime.

Big Facts! 1:30 I was very disappointed with the lack of emotion and showing of empathy from 13. Then to see 14 on the screen able to convey so much feeling just made me sad because I think 13's character could have been written more comfortable expressing her emotions. I often felt like she was emotionally stunted, and I didn't really understand why. Maybe if they had tied her emotional response into some of the trauma 12 endured it would make slightly more sense. I wonder if writers were worried about leaning into The Doctors emotional intelligence because she was a woman but, I think that would be the perfect time since Doctor Who has a really strong emotional impact at times.

Can’t wait for the next episode because of Wilf
In “The end of time” when wilf first enters the Tardis he says “I thought it would be cleaner”
Now with this episode, they brace behind / are entering the Tardis together and it is a VERY clean Tardis, I hope that either wilf or the doctor makes a comment about it saying something like “it’s cleaner”, I/you tidied up a bit” etc
