10’s of thousands of those engines out there running every day with no issues, many of them with 300K-400K miles or more , taxi drivers use them all they long all over the Europe.. there is no engine out there , regardless of brand, that won’t have some issues at high miles … key word here is “maintenance “ and regular service … and change your oil every 3K-5K miles , flush your transmission every 10K miles, if something leaks fix it right away … these are powerhouses , and I’d never buy AMG Mercedes , because you know people who buy those , drive them hard… if you want M278 , buy nice S or GLS class, with good service records, with not more than 1-2 previous owners, and not more than 70K-80K miles , and try to get 2015 and up , but if you already have older M278 , you still have a fantastic engine , just do regular service and maintenance… if my engine goes out for any reason, I’ll just rebuild it , I don’t have money for new S class, and buying used is risky and I may end up with the same problem, at least with rebuilt engine you know what you got
Its astonishing that he actually said that Mercedes didnt do anything when they actually did. They obviously revised this issue because the engines from beginning of 2014 and on wont have this issue. Not taking anything away from what he is saying but they did obvioulsy fix the issue. I am a Mercedes technician and its crazy how it seems to affect some engines and not all before 2014. I have seen pre 2014 with over 100k and no issues and other that have many issues. Not sure what the difference is but there are different variants of this engine. Maybe thats the case.. I dont know... Just saying!!!... I will say this the M278 2014 and after are much much better!!!
Thank you so much for this, just bought a Gl450 V8, production date 03/14 with 132k miles on it. Already had a heart attack before i saw your reply! Thank you so much! Is there any other problems to look out for please?
I drive a 2014 GL500 with an M278 engine. It's been leaking coolant for over 8 months. At first, I had to add coolant every 15 days, but now I need to do it every 3-4 days. I've used four 5-liter cans of coolant in this time. Every morning, I add up to 50 ml of coolant to keep it full. I watched a video and now I'm worried the coolant might mix with the engine oil, which could cause more problems. Four months ago, when I changed the engine oil, the mechanic said it wasn't mixed with coolant. But the leak has gotten worse since then, and I'm concerned the oil could now be diluted with coolant.
You can check by using the oil dipstick, Coolant tank or by observing under the oil fill cap. You will notice a thicker than normal fluid. If it looks light brown, and not clear when you shine a light, than you may have an issue.
Most common in our 2014 gl500 also was the water pump. Original waterpump pulley was black the upgraded is silver it would leak behind it. Also the bottom hose connected or the thin turbo coolant lines infront of the water pump are super common in this gl. So check that. On top of the engine the black 3side breather hose I just used gasket maker paste to stop leaks it's easy, anyhow coolant leak on this engine should be priority or else major damages. Goodluck Edit: I forgot to mention don't let fan or tools touch radiator. I cracked a small hole and repaired with steel epoxy/Jb weld. Working fine but just advise
Oh, thank the stars mine was built 09/14. Now I only have to worry about bore score, leaking timing covers, oil in the wiring harness, failing turbos, coolant leaks, and needing engine mounts every 60k. Mercedes really shat the bed with this engine.
@@Ghostrider-xd3xvjust get you one brother. With a bumper to bumper warranty. It'll cost you about 3k. It can last 2-3 years. You can take it to a dealer for the fix OR find a reputable licensed mechanic that KNOWS how to work on these cars. Just understand how the warranty works. Understand how much the regular things (tires, brakes, insurance, putting gas in the car) will cost vs owning a more simple machine. If you can afford it and it doesn't break you then do it.
What about the engine in the GLS450, the M276? Is that a better choice of engine? I wanted to purchase a 550 or 63, but learned about the engine and said no. The 550 would appear to be a more desirable choice given all of the standard options, but if the GLS450 has a motor that's solid, maybe I should consider that model? Or does it suffer from the same problems? Any advice from an expert?
2016 would be your best bet. As the older engines also had issues with the piston sleeves / scoring. They changed to steel sleeves in 2016. I have a 2016 E550 coupe with 57k miles and none of these issues. The biggest will be stay on top of maintenance. I change my oil every 3500 - 4000 miles. Do the B type service every 20k miles as recommended. I change the coolant every year. Transmission service will be next as all my vehicles I do that every 60k. But for my Mercedes I am thinking after I get the transmission serviced I may cut that time to every 35k miles get it serviced. I work remote so I don't put a lot of miles on my vehicles. But I do shorten the service recommendations and have no issues with either my Toyota's or my Mercedes because of it. Some people tend to forget changing their coolant even at the recommended times. The issues is that coolant over time can become acidic and it'll eat away at the gaskets. You see a lot of head gasket failures typically caused by poor maintenance. The only issues with the M278 engine that I may run into eventually is the plastic turbo coolant lines. Not sure why they decided to use plastic in those locations. And from the dealership that's a $2300 ordeal replacing all coolant lines.
How is there no recall on these engine? Especially since it’s a catastrophic break down. Mbz might have a class action lawsuit since they seem to know about it and the only option is to buy a new engine.
Hi Guys, We have a 2013 CLS 550 I bought the car used. In my ownership oil changed at every 5k, LMolly oil only and under warranty had the tensioners changed, and now at the recent oil change discovered metal shavings in filter and old oil.
