Oil pump solenoid thread. Ridiculously long, don't read all of it, basic gist of it is that the oil pump goes into a low pressure mode at low engine load, which affects the piston squirters most. May or may not be the direct cause of the bore score issue. Some think it's bad because it weakens the oil, but who cares you do it every 3k miles anyways. Right?

When doing the turbo coolant lines replace everything listed below, especially the oil filter housing thermostat and the gaskets. Also would recommend doing the thermostat because you will most likely break it if you remove it.
Oil Filter Housing gasket (replace while you are doing coolant lined)

Remember, don't bother with removing the aluminum lines. You do still need to purchase the plastic connectors that go into the block as those are a likely failure point. Follow the tutorial below.

If you have a 157 your engine was fully updated with engine 1579xx 60 047752 which was around 2014. The M278 was fully updated after engine 2789xx 30 191843. Use the website lastvin.com to get your engine number and check.

The reason these engines blow up imo is due to detonation from high intake air temps. The intercooler gets heat soaked when it sits after driving. You get back in and have sky high intake temps 130 degrees or more until the car runs for several minutes. I used an autometer dash link to confirm this. Any way the need for a split system, large front mount heat exchanger and high volume pump are obvious. I'm also going to do a water meth kit when I get the Renntech tune. I'm doing the solenoid delete as well, thanks for the info.
Yes IAT's definitely play a part, that's why it's important to leave the car idling for 2-3 minutes after driving it hard before you shut it off. The intercooler pump always on mod makes a big difference also.
I like the solenoid mod, smart and simple solution. Healthy oil pressure is always a good thing.
Dude you remind me of myself a lot lmao I wish I found this video a year ago when I got mine! But I’ve already taken care of most of these things from research across the interwebs, great vid I’m gonna send it to these people on my IG asking about my 550 instead of explaining every time 😂
I own 2014 E63 with M157 , all of your coolant hoses, issues , all happened and replaced with new ( Im Mercedes Tech) even with discount, those stuff still very expensive.
I like you cooling fan idea , but really don’t want to destroy the clip on the fan , but also every job for the engine , that requires to remove the fan and loose all coolant, I own it for a year, and probably drain and refill the coolant more than 10 times, different coolant pipe/ line pop every other day
@@MBZXZ Yep, that's why I broke the clips, I've pulled the fan out twice since then to change the belt and a pulley, having to drain the coolant every time would be a pain in the ass.
Same problem, i own a 2014 e63. Changed the Radiator, coolant hoses etc. Can u tell me anything else i cn do before hand to prevent any other damage
@@Khanosama59 oil/water cooler seal, front covers , almost everything related to the coolant line/pipe , change oil frequently and used the oil additive to protect the cylinder wall
So that vacuum solenoid has to be replace or is that a upgrade version ?
What? That's the OEM part.
That’s why I love M113k engine, everything is metal
I have both
You're joking right?
@@gottliebdee263 wjy would I be? I like them both
@@shosaleen My reply was to Zeomarbob.
Please read description before asking questions. Highly recommend FCP euro over other part websites due to their warranty and genuine parts, you risk getting fakes on ebay or amazon.
Thanks - I have a 18 550 GLS - hope to keep it for the long haul, will convince my mechanic to do some or all of these.
By late 2015 90% of problems on M278 are gone so you dont need to worry about much with 2018 model other then doing oil changes with best oils on 5000 miles , even sooner if you tow with it.
great info i plan on puttig hose on the turbo lines and step clamps . i am having a hard time removing the line from the expansion tank to the radiator at the radiator ,any tips , and maybe you didnt need to remove it ,thx
Good summary of the issues - thanks!
Gotta ml550 v8 biturbo, 2012 and yes….. sitting at 140k miles, still running strong currently, I hope I can rack it to 180-200k miles we’ll see though…. Done nothing but an oil change, changed the rotors as well.
what is the volvo version you were talking about on the vacuum?
top tier m278 vid
Great video, at 12:18 can you pls tell me what are the 2 lines/hoses at the bottom right of radiator, mine are leaking, TIA..
No clue
Great video my friend a lot of important information to take into consideration if thinking about getting a car with a m278. I actually have enough issues already with my m156 but my m113k keeps me sane 😂 Thank you for your video
M113k is a great engine, very easy to work on and the problems if any are always exactly where you expect them to be.
I would recommend replacing that "random bolt" you used with an aluminum one. Steel and aluminum react, and it will seize up and be impossible to remove later.
I know. The random bolt was from a clamp on my CL55 which was going into the block, and the M113k is aluminum as well.
Good info Sir! Like to see you work yourself on your M278. Any word on celinder score? No issues?
None on mine, dropped a borescope in.
@@ginco_bnz what is the milage and year of the production?

Just picked up a 2018 GLS63 AMG. Any issues with these later years or were most or all.problems fixed by then?
Nice vid, thanks. I'll say this, removing the oil solenoid connector under the car without a lift was a bitch!
Yeah... just did this 2 days ago and sliced my left arm on the fan shroud. And Taping up the loose connection was like trying to play pickup sticks with your butt cheeks.
@@simpleman68yep, definitely easier with the fan out, but worth it in the long run.
Awesome, thank you bro!
My car runs good but still prob need to do all of this amazing video.
Can you share any info on those pipes with the airfilters? Appears to be some 45degree bends about 8"~10" in length? 2" pipe? Appears to be less restrictive than the stock air intake.
Dude you're the best thank you so much appreciate your video we teach me a lot to save me a lot of money
How many miles does you have on your car ?
fantastic video, thanks a ton man!
Very nice vid! Very informative!
such a nice video but so few watches...

Are newer M157 after 2015 safe or do they still have these issues?
Read the description.
You forgot to mention that you need to replace the coolant tank because of the bag with the stupid shite in it, that disintegrates over time and ends up at the bottom of the air conditioner's radiator (needs new radiator if not replaced on time).
You learn something new every day, thank you for the information.
Although, I'm not seeing anything about the bag for my CLS on WIS, can you share any more information?
@@ginco_bnz Hello. I only have this video from a Russian youtuber and i also read it on the Russian forums. The story is that the container has some sort of a bag with a "coolant softener" of some sorts, which helps the engine last longer. Ofc, due to Russian winters or other harsh conditions these bags tear up and this "softener" spills into the cooling system and at the end clogs the AC radiator. This is the video. GO to 15:30 ruclips.net/video/qNkXYDORPbU/видео.html&ab_channel=%D0%94%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%81MoneyAC
@@ginco_bnz found an English video about a VW car. You cant take just the bag out on a Mercedes though. Its in another compartment inside the container. Also, it doesnt see through even if you put a light on it. You will find it, if you cut up the container. ruclips.net/video/-GWRejR7U0w/видео.html&ab_channel=LastHumansGarage
@@ginco_bnz lol does youtube deny me posting another youtube videos in the comments? or you delete them?
Do you happen to know which Volvo vacuum pump fits?
I wasn’t able to find it in my quick search, I’m sure if you put “Volvo vacuum pump M278 M276” in google there will be a forum post that pops up.
Where is the oil solenoid on the m276 engine bro?
Between the intercooler and block, very tight to reach.
What does unplugging the oil pump solenoid do ? I heard it makes the car run and shift way better.. idk though
Basically just makes it so that your engine is always squirting oil and maintaining proper pressure at all times. When it is plugged in it limits the amount of oil pressure under 3k rpm I believe. I’ve read it’s under 3.5k rpm as well so I don’t know which one it is but I noticed a difference when I disconnected mine, the car just seemed to be happier under low rpm’s.

Think a 2013 E 550 is a good buy? What car do you have lol
I would go for a 14+ unless the 13 has had the timing issues resolved, however if you're willing to pull the timing covers off it's not very difficult after that.
@@miseryparty3726 recommend 16+ m278 , heard they fix the cylinder wall damage issue?
@@MBZXZYeah because these engines love there 4k oil changes, and when you mix 10-12k oil change with people that tow boats with GL550 you get fucked up cylinder walls

Great video!! Well done
The issue with the solenoid mod is extremely low oil pressure under 2k. on some cars down to 14psi. now if your ever booting it from a stand still the pressure i feel is not enough to support the rod bearing with out premature bearing wear.
Not sure where you got that information, but I didn't see it in the thread. The only issue the solenoid would cause is increased oil wear due to increase oil pressure, as Tasos covered in his video. The solenoid mod forces the oil pump into a high pressure only scenario, unless you are thinking that the solenoid mod lowers oil pressure? If it's 14psi with the solenoid unplugged then it will be 14psi stock as the solenoid only has a high or low pressure mode, unplugging it will only increase idle pressure. Mercedes themselves say that if the solenoid has a problem, and the hidden code appears, to simply ignore it.
@@ginco_bnzthe mod probably will also cause higher oil pump wear since it's being used more excessively
@@ralph02136 oil pumps have been in use for 100 years without a low pressure mode... you will not have problems.
@@ginco_bnz true but Benz designs their cars in a way where they act up when changed sometimes
@@ralph02136 people have reported the car drives better with the mod. More oil pressure is rarely a bad thing.
Great video. I have an m113 so none of these issues.
It's still good info if you're ever thinking of upgrading.
Your engine looks almost new, looks like this M278 have too much plastic, even more than my M272, this will not age well.
I've seen plenty at 150k miles +. All that matters is how you take care of it.
