  • St Margaret's is an Anglican church and is part of the Diocese of Chester in the deanery of Bowdon. The church was commissioned by George Harry Grey 7th Earl of Stamford and was dedicated in memory of his sister Margaret. Construction began in 1851. Built at a cost of £20,000 paid for by the then Earl of Stamford & Warrington. The contractors for the building were Messrs Bowden, Edwards and Forster.
The church is built with Yorkshire wall stone facings. It was extended in 1923 to the west but never finished, hence bare brickwork. The interior is impressive, a hammer beam roof with carved angels (modelled on Westminster Hall in London), a huge reredos modelled on the Henry VII chapel in Westminster and an elegant plaster sanctuary ceiling. The tower has a peal of ten bells cast in 1854 by John Taylor. Originally there was a stone steeple that rose to 210 feet but it was removed due to structural issues.
St Margaret’s is grade II* listed. The style of architecture is what is generally known as the Perpendicular.
