John, what a great "Slice of Life™" video. You really capture not just the food, but people and culture that it represents. I haven't made it to Hokkaido (yet), but I love cold weather and this makes me want to go even more! Thanks for another amazing production. When a shrimp is fried, I have never had an issue eating the whole thing. P.S. I'm also loving the more consistent release schedule.
his voice is clear, understandable, and you can tell that he's really interested in what he's talking about. he's a little bit of a silly dork but thats not a bad thing. always family friendly, solid content. sometimes i wish it would have more interactions and a little less tv style editing so this episode was great.
I prefer people who come off as light hearted and silly, it’s easier to feel comfortable and be yourself around people that are naturally themselves regardless of how people interpret them.
I loved the camaraderie and the approachability of strangers who invite rather than push away. It is always these small cultural rural areas that know how to open the moment with tradition, simple foods, and warm smiles.
I love Japan, anime, traditional places, the food, the language...everything JAPAN!!! Yet, I feel bad as a foreigner to go there, as the mass immmigration of the west and impolitness of foreigners ruines pur name and Id just eel bad for imposing on them even more. This is definitely included in my favorite Only in Japan videos! The authenticity and story-telling is superb! I’ve been to Hokkaido but the farthest I’ve been to is in Sapporo. Now I have a new place I want to visit there. Thanks John!
Nes Duran is been to Wakkanai but was really curious about the other side of Hokkaido! Next is Kushiro next time!! I loved the food in Obihiro, def good to go in summer when they have their fireworks. Or June when Furano is all flowery! 🌸🌺🌷
ONLY in JAPAN Thank you very much for the tips! 👍🏼👍🏼 I think I haven’t seen a video of yours about Furano but yes I heard that their flower fields are a must see in Hokkaido. Can’t wait to see your next upload! I always look forward to your videos because I keep on discovering more about Japan. What you’re doing is amazing and inspiring. Keep it up!
Leave me a comment below and I'll pin the best one to the top tomorrow! Hokkaido is one of the friendliest places to visit and the fact that they have amazing food, beautiful nature should clinch it any time of the year! Oh, the Driving Series with Dean will continue on Friday as we try some of the best WAGYU just outside of Tokyo. Stay hungry my friends - ONLY in JAPAN is just warming up!
I absolutely love your show. Its the first I subscribed to on RUclips. These videos make me smile. Im scared of flying but you're kinda making me want to get over it to come see Japan!
@@melaniejaneprocter5529 I did. 45 min before :) not many on the flight - security took less than a minute. Love domestic flights in Japan! That ending camera shot was so wholesome. It really makes the approach to strangers in Hokkaido during the festival a lot more friendly and rewarding. Very social, welcoming and memorable. I've never been to Japan but Hokkaido is my #1 destination if I were to visit the country first.
Wolf3fd paper is usually at train stations. At home, magazines, manga, books etc are all recycled - ties with string and taken out a couple times a month, cardboard once a week. For those that recycled paper, the companies would give residents toilet paper in return depending on how much paper you recycled. They’d leave it at the door. I don’t know if they still have this service but I noticed it a lot when I lived in the countryside. Def use more TP!
Wow, this is another top quality video, compared to other mainstream videos. The amount of editing and time put in this video well appreciated and deserve more recognition.
Another amazing video from this channel. Always informative. I learn a lot of different side of Japan everytime I watch 'Only in Japan'. This particular video somehow is little bit different from the others, showing the fun atmosphere and friendly interaction with the locals. Love it, especially the last part when you couldn't really remember what to say, it's funny. Keep up the amazing work, John-san!
Thank you for yet another great video! So atmospheric. I feel as if I'm there in front of the sizzling fish and meat with a cup of hot sake! Cheers! Hokkaido people are really friendly and open, well, I felt so when I lived there. Now in the UK I miss those warm hearts in the land of long, long frozen winter. Thank you again, I really admire your wonderful adventurous spirits! Take care!
I'm from Chicago. I started eating shrimp with the shell on out of laziness of wanting to peel it, but soon learned exactly what your VLOG mentioned....the shell is where the strong flavor is. Now I eat it with shell for the flavor! Love your VLOGs!!
I have seen many videos from all over Japan, but by far this place seems the funnest. I am from NE Ohio USA so I am used to the cold winter's, so should I ever get lucky enough to visit Japan, I think I would choose this place. The people seem down to earth, fun and friendly, the landscape is beautiful and the food and drink is right up my alley. Thank you for showing me this wonderful city.
Love the idea of the communal BBQs! What a great way to stay warm and meet people over delicious food. Never seen a food market like this before, looks so fun! Only in Japan!
Wow, looks like an amazing place to be in. The food and the friendliness remind me of my father's hometown, a small fishing town on Java, Indonesia, but without the ice and snow of course. There, we eat shrimp whole just like in this video, either deep fried in light batter or flash fried and then sauteed in chili sauce. I really miss the taste of those super fresh shrimp. It is strong tasting, but it definitely is easy to get used to the delicious saltiness and pungency of the ocean.
I'm Japanese and glad to watch this nice video! If you here is planning to go to Hokkaido, I want you try the legendary salmon named 時鮭(Tokishirazu ). When I ate it for the first time, I got goosebump coz too delicious!lol sorry my poor English!
I thought the ice bar was the coolest thing ever ( no pun intended ) until I saw how welcoming everyone was while you enjoyed fish and hot sake. I was smiling ear to ear wishing I was along side you.
What an adorable, chilling and cozy video, John! I ❤️ videos like this. And I also love the way you make vlogs, it's so compelling ! Hope you'll produce more of videos like this 'cause I am caught in them!
Great episode! Where do I begin? There are so many things I want to comment on: you tipsy at the end (LOL), the friendliness of the locals, the cool shot (no pun intended) from under the ice bar, okonomiyaki with bacon on it (oh yeah), the steamed potatoes, and eating the whole fried shrimp. Damn! Now I want to go to Hokkaido even more than before.
I love your show john.. i am going to japan next year and will be going to many of the places you have shown- onsens food festivals capsule hotel.. thanks so much. I love how well you speak Japanese also. The people really appreciate it.
Came from Instagram! Oh I love Japan so much miss a lot need to come back to there! My country Brazil is really hot but I love cold climate. When I went to Japan wasn't able to see snow and it was winter. Would love to go to Hokkaido!
There is a lot of negativity out there on the internet but your videos are so damn wholesome. I love it! Your positivity in each video gives me inspiration.
FACT: Your best videos are food centric videos lol Loved all the food and yeah, I would eat the whole shrimp but the way they are normally cooked, it's very hard to eat the shell. Maybe the way they cook it softens it. Anyway, great place to have a few beers lol!
It's true! But the most viewed episodes on the channel are CAPSULE HOTEL, HIGHWAY THROUGH A BUILDING, SLEEPER CAR NIGHT TRAIN :) hahaha After the top 3, it's mostly food though because food brings people together. Thanks Pablo! You're also right about the shrimp and eating it the normal way.

This is one of my favorite videos. Love the quality of your vids but what I admire about you is the effort you put into learning the Japanese language. I realize you don't always use correct Japanese, but the fact that you can carry a conversation is a huge asset and serves you well.
Ahhhh Hokkaido ❤❤❤! Your videos really make me miss the little things that make Japan so wonderful - their hospitality! I remember when we were in Hakodate, and wandered into Daimon Yokocho because we were not really that impressed with Hakodate Beer... And every bar that we stepped into were full of friendly locals that tried to make conversation with us despite our broken Japanese 😊 made us feel so welcomed!
