- I have always wondered about MLS fandom. I fell in love with soccer, football for most of you, through the World Cup. I played FIFA for years, became obsessed with Football Manager, and started making videos about it. Then I started making videos about soccer stories. The game has become my life, but I’ve never had a club, and MLS is my league, I always wanted to know what it was like.
So, we went to find out. The Hudson River Derby between New York City FC and New York Red Bulls. We wanted to connect with fan groups and get a feel for the experience from the inside, but I would have never predicted the story we would find. I think those are the best kind of stories. The ones that sneak up on you, surprise you, and challenge you. This did all those things for me.

Whenever I see footage from the MLS something seems off. But I’m starting to realize that we are still watching the formation of clubs and the culture around those clubs. Which sort of is a view to the past, around the 1900’s when European clubs where growing their fandom and culture and has had time to settle and become what it is today
Key difference: The US ownership model ensures that it's all ultimately top-down. These are "franchises". They aren't part of any club pyramid. They are formed and bought by billionaires. European clubs are built ground up by local communities, which provides them with an organic and locally-tied identity. Now, of course, today league's like the PL are hypercapitalist as well, but that's also why English football is becoming ever more soulless; no standing sections, no supporter ownership or influence, and more and more tourists at the cost of the working-class fans who can't even afford the tickets.
Btw, I'm not saying this to trash on either American or US supporters. I'm trying to highlight that supporters should focus more on underlying economic and structural issues and demand influence over things like ticket prices, names, colors, etc. Ultimately, they should strive for 50+1. That's proper football culture.
I’ve been watching MLS since 1996, it’s not new. There are far bigger clubs with better fan bases and celebrated cultures & histories.
We are not watching the “formation of clubs and cultures” in America. What you are watching is globalization allowing for the international market to grow the sport here in America with many more eyes now on it. Which is great! Don’t get me wrong, but if you ask me using NYCFC or LAFC or any of these new U-10 expansion teams to represent MLS is a joke. They’re just rich boys and girls trying to get more of your money, they don’t care about the sport. If you need a current example look at what’s happening in San Diego at this moment. Could have had Landon Donovan and the San Diego Loyal, but instead the League wants another rich boy prioritizing the international market over domestic market.
In layman’s terms. They don’t care about fans & cultures. They just want your money, so they’re trying to replicate a money making machine that was European Football Culture.
We don’t need European fandom. We want to have our own clubs with our own cultures. But of course Globalization will win.

It's tricky because in a way it's trying to grow a sport in a country that kinda spits on its culture. American sports culture is the "baseball" crowds Z referred to (sit on your hands and clap when you're told), and the closed setup of MLS is a byproduct of that as well. But fans are still finding ways to create some sort of culture
Keep doing this Zealand. Keep going to other American clubs, you'll only get better at showing and presenting their cultures and their histories. Good video, keep branching out.

As a first generation Mexican-American, The passion for the fans is unreal. My dad still support his team for MX but also support our MLS team (Chicago fire). I proud to scream at a tv screen during match because I know that my passion is real. Great video. Beer is a must anytime you watch a game.

I think this is really interesting because I have a similar situation in India. The Indian Super League (ISL) when it first started had franchises - modelled on America and Australia as well as on the cricket league, the Indian Premier League - but over time, what we have seen is the fanbases grow and the rivalries grow organically and each with a culture of its own. I am a fan of Bengaluru FC which started first in 2013 and it became my team because I used to live in Bengaluru (or Bangalore for Westerners as it was back then) and I had no previous team to call my own. We were in the I-League previously (it used to be India's top league) and then moved into the ISL a few years later. Indian football, like some MLS teams, is still in its growing stages but now I can relate with what NYCFC fans are going through with the evolution of their team because as supporters we have also experienced our own ways of supporting the team - which mirrors more european style than South American because alll of us come from supporting English clubs mostly or European clubs in general. Now we have fierce rivalries with other clubs in India like with Kerala (see the incident in last year's playoffs for example), with Mohun Bagan (we lost the title to them on the last day) and with Chennaiyin (historical and political reasons). It's actually so cool for me to have seen the growth of our league and our game!

Whatever I was excepting at the start of this video it was not this. A well produced, well made documentary about NYCFC fandom on a RUclips channel where some dude plays FM. Exquisitely done!

I was at NYCFC for a few weeks as a trial player but wasn't able to make it. It got me on the map though, and I ended up in Japan soon afterwards. For the place that I started at, I'm glad you talked about it in so much detail.

I’m a South London Gooner who took in my first MLS game during my hols to NY in May. I travelled out to Harrison on the train and saw NYRB v Montreal. 2-1. Good day out and yeah interesting atmosphere to take in, full of drums too but not as close to them as you were Z
And my first game as a neutral for a long time. No match available at Yankee Stadium at the time.
Im a humble dude from New England who loves Liverpool and LAFC. I took a holiday to Charlotte recently for the first time in years just to see LAFC. The fandom may seem plastic but goddamnit do we care.
To think of what I’ve been through in the last few years to this point and spending a lot of hard earned money based around an MLS team is unthinkable. I’ve only loved LAFC from day 1 because I was so upset with Revolution here locally. If that deserved me forking over cash it definitely means something.

I visited this ground and done a video in March. I could not believe the atmosphere! Coming from Europe, I expected this to have a tourist feel to it, especially inside a huge baseball park but boy was I wrong. absolutely phenomenal video. you really authentically captured what supporters culture is like in the US. there's lots of growing pains and learning to be done in all fanbases, even the more established ones, but the mixture of latin american and european styles in the stadiums is something you wont find anywhere else in the world. eurosnobs and the like love to shit on the "quality" of this league and its fans but i've been to atmospheres in the US better than some I've been to while traveling in Europe. as you said in the video, the soccer fans here didnt just materialize from nothing, as an immigrant the passion runs in my blood, as for so many others. seriously great work on this video.
But I can't leave a comment on a video about these teams without saying fuck red bull and fuck nycfc though. with their fanbase and disinterested ownership, red bull is an embarrassment as that one nyc fan said. But so is ALL of new york. new york soccer historically is a mess even going back to the cosmos. you would think there'd be a least one team in the most populous city in the country that has their shit together and has a real fanbase. i went to a Sacramento Republic game recently and that atmosphere was genuinely way better than when i went to yankee stadium. new york supporters culture has been in such a sad and almost hopeless state for years now and it's borderline embarrassing when you see the progress elsewhere around the country

It’s saddening how NYCFC won the MLS Cup just two years ago and no one in New York really gave a shit. Soccer still has a long way to go in this country and especially in the city. I get it’s still the 5th most popular sport and there’s 8 teams ahead of NYCFC in popularity but still. The tiny championship banner and the fact they still play in a baseball stadium almost a decade later tell you all you need to know about the state of the club.

Love this type of video Zealand. I would highly recommend coming up to the PNW, because the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders(My team) and Portland Timbers are great examples of MLS having a thriving fanbase with their own cultures and traditions, and would love to see your take on it, esepically considering each club's histories outside of MLS.
That was a great video. Thank you! After living in Asia for half a decade, I've made many friends from the USA. When I first met some of these friends, I predicted that many Americans will start to pay far greater attention to football. Over my time out here, I have noticed more and more Americans saying tehy enjoy football and either have done for a while or that they are recent converts to the sport. It's fantastic to see, as an Englishman, and as a football fan, I've always wanted the USA to be apart of what so many around the world know and love. So it's exciting to see such growth in the states, whether organic or not it doesn't matter right now, eventually these clubs will create their own unique cultures that will be noticeable throughout the world, I'm sure of it.

Love this and love the video concept. Bringing more eyes to the MLS in this way is so creative, Z. I am part of the New England Revolutions Midnight Riders supporters group and going to these games is a blast. We also strongly dislike the Red Bulls because after all, as one of our chants goes, "Where in New York is New Jersey? I have no effing clue!"
More of this please Zealand great to see more of this around the MLS especially their rivalries I have only ever seen anything on Portland and Seattle before but i have liked both bits of content. Think of the MLS saves you'll inspire.
Born in Jamaica raised here in Florida. I’m a fan of the big 3 US sports but as soon as Inter started up I became an instant fan, almost like something was missing. It felt so good having a local club again to go all in and support. There’s something special about cheering for you team and watching it grow from us getting finessed and restrictions to last years run with higuain to now having the likes of busquets Messi and alba it’s amazing to watch your team grow. Can’t wait for expanded salary caps and more new fans seeing that the MLS is a fun and intense league

As someone who studied History at postgrad, it's rare that we get to see something like the establishment of a major football league, and the social and cultural changes that brings, starting afresh and in such a detailed fashion. We get to see new clubs gather followings and fandoms, which one can use to re-imagine what it might have been like in Victorian England when towns and cities across the country were establishing clubs and planting those now-immovable community roots. It also gives a fascinating insight into those early attempts to export the game in the early 20th Century from Britain to mainland Europe, allowing for recontextualizing of the establishment of the game in places like Spain, France, Italy and Germany amongst other European nations, as well as in South America. Seeing rivalries like NYCFC and NJRB emerge in the spaces created by the establishment of the MLS gives people and idea of what it might have looked & felt like on the ground in Argentina as the social fabric of cities like Buenos Aires and Avellaneda adjusted to accommodate new football teams and the developing rivalries. It's a rare chance to see Ultra Culture forming an identity in real time. Well done, very interesting video!
You can call them RBNJ, but Metrostars and RB were NY’s only team for two decades, played some games in NY, and Citi have played multiple games in NJ each season despite that being a very surprising and contradictory move towards the pride of the fans. Plus home games in New England! also, RB tried to be a different expansion team inside NYC like Citi did but MLS forced them to buy Metros and maintain the single market. They’ve always represented NY🔴⚫️⚪️🟡
What Europeans and Latinoamericanos don't understand about U.S. fandom (MLS) is that we have MANY sports and teams that we support, and it goes back generations just like Footbabll-Soccer in their countries. Moreover, we in the U.S. have an entirely unique sports culture surrounding College sports; dozens of leagues and hundreds of teams across the entire country (basketball and tackle football). When it comes to MLS, people think these instant rivalries are forced or "manufactured," when in reality, "natural" rivalries are quick to sprout up because roots that go back for generations, based on geography, politics, culture, class, already exist.
This was sick. Absolutely loved it. A similar thing has been happening in LA too… lafc is in the heart of the city because they came in with tons of financial backing more recently because the league could back up the prerequisite investment. Carson Galaxy found a home at the Home Depot Center because the league was in its infancy when they were formed. The 3252 has done an awesome job of Sherpa-ing the rest of LA to create an awesome culture (besides the recent bottle throwing) and, in my opinion, the best fan experience for sports in LA.

You can tell you were around some passionate fans there creating their own tribe. I think that some fans get swept along in the ultra movement and/or the hooligan element and that becomes more important to them than the success of the club. I recall being at an Asian Champions League match where Melbourne Victory had to win to stay in the tournament. The game was into injury time and the Victory were piling on the pressure. In my mind this should be a tense, nail-biting and passionate few minutes where you're gripped by the action. There were plenty fans feeling that but over in the Ultra's area there were fans doing a conga round the stadium with their back to the pitch.
That makes it feel a bit like a fad, artificial but if it gets more fans along and generates income for the club then it's a good thing.
I've just found this video. and I've gotta say, as a South American (Argentinian, of all things) football fan, I am really surprised by the atmosphere. It's so cool to see how our traditions are mixed with other football fan traditions. I guess that's what makes the US so interesting, as a melting pot (though it's a shame the violence is also carried over)

Phenomenal video, love the narration, the editing, the topic at hand. I would gladly suggest you to try out covering the Montréal - Toronto rivalry, it's quite an interesting one, I believe. This feud has lasted for well over half a century and goes beyond soccer and sports in general, it helped to distinguish two societies and ways of thinking all within the same country. Québec vs Canada, French vs English, the Catholics vs the Protestants, seperation vs federation.
CF Montréal vs Toronto FC would be scratching the surface of this intense sporting rivalry, when compared to an Alouettes vs Argonauts game or even the original rivalry between the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs.

The one thing they have to work on tho, imo, is Z's narrating. It's a bit too passive and David Attenborough-ish (a bit of an issue I also had in Armchair History), you can tell he is reading a script. That said, I have no doubt he will improve and manage to incorporate his usual energetic self into the reading, once that happens, this channel will be unstable!

This is awesome. That's why I love NYC FC. Lots of locals and lots of heart!! I started the follow the Metro Stars right before RBL bought then and moved them to NJ. I just never really connected with them after that. I haven't been to a game yet, but I cannot wait for the new stadium in the next few years.
You have to do more of these btw. I knew about the ultras, I didn't know the culture was so deep and rich. Also, love the vid quality and the style. Bro-ham shoots very well.
