honestly man, your reaction was pure. All was needed was your facial expressions. You are right, not much to say about it except its heart breaking, emotional, but absolutely brilliant. i tear up every time i see this video
Absolutely heartwrenching yet beautiful song, with a video to match. He closed the show with it on one of his recent tours and I have never seen so many people at a concert burst into tears.
This is the first thing I ever heard from Steven and which led me to discover his entire back catalogue. Without doubt the most creative artist currently working. Happy Returns has me in tears every time.
Your reaction was perfect. This song leaves you broken and dumbfounded. Now imagine sitting in an auditorium with 5.1 surround sound and Steven Wilson and band play the whole album with graphics on a screen. I was totally destroyed!
The animation was done by the brilliant Jess Cope. She also did the videos for Drive Home, Routine, and the as yet unreleased video for People Who Eat Darkness. She's awesome.
Steven Wislon : *"You Fool , this isn't even my final form!"* _raises you Routine_ No but seriously haha. This one puts a knot in your throat and makes you tear up. Routine literally rips your heart out of your chest and sends you into a corner to curl up into a ball and weep. Haha
I am crying again :-( This song was captivating. I could not stop watching it. The video along with the song was so touching. I know we all have lost someone close to us in life so the emotions run deep.
Steven Wilson sure knows how to pull at the heartstrings eh? Good stuff. Here's another song from The Pineapple Thief, check it out! It's a mellowy pineappley kinda thing... :) The Pineapple Thief - In Exile (from Your Wilderness) ruclips.net/video/8LTh10MHMOo/видео.html (The Pineapple Thief is a progressive rock band, started by Bruce Soord in 1999 in Somerset, England. As of 2016, the band has released eleven studio albums.)
Watching this video again, I really feel that the section of the animation where he steps into the void and holds his sister's hand is symbolic of him passing on and joining his sister in the afterlife. That's what it feels like to me.
Hello Jim, I had to gather my thoughts to share my opinion on this song and life in general. To quote Forest Gump, "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get". You posted this sad and touching song before the pandemic and before people started to die by the thousands. Mourning the dead and crying for your lost loved ones is part of life, even animals can feel loss, so it's not "silly" to share your feelings about it. Many times I think, who will cry for me if I die, because I live alone and don't have a family, I feel like an anonymous ant among many, insignifant name and number in the system. Last week in Quebec province, we had a "national funeral" for a popular and loved quebecer hockey player, maybe you've heard of him, Guy Lafleur. It made me reflect on death and human condition. Even if you're alone, surrounded by family, rich, poor, black white old young, popular or anonymous, death will take us all. One must enjoy life and be grateful for what we have, and people we meet along the way. Sometimes you meet people by accident and they become like a shining diamond in your dark days and make your life enjoyable! thanks for sharing this song and I will listen to the entire album for sur !
I've been watching your Tool reactions and I didn't realise you had Steven Wilson in your list too! This song is fantastic, your reaction was beautiful. Mutual man tears here with you mate.
Check out the song Drag Ropes by Storm Corrosion. This group is a collaboration between Steve Wilson and Michael Akefeldt (Opeth). Very similar imagery used in the video clip.
and besides all emotions have you recognised the change of time with the key: 7/4 minor to 6/4 major. I think this is a subtile technique to create feeling in music. Great!
Jim Newstead if you haven't already seen 'routine'.. By him too, you must.. It's even more devastating than' 'the Raven'... But i expect you have seen and heard it by now..
hey dude, Prog rock magazine listed RAVEN as no 9 on the all time best prog album list!! ( close to the edge no 1 and Court of the crimson king no 2) so, y'know, People are getting it!
I reacted the same way as you, and the song without Jess Cope's Amazing Animation is moving but seeing it together with the music is well words cannot describe. Please check out the video Refuge as it will elicit the same reaction... My 2 favorite songs/videos of SW

I have never not cried to this song.
"Drive Home" from this same album have one of the most beautiful solos of all time!
Your reaction was very true and empathic
I had no idea a music video could make me cry.
Sometimes emotion is its own explanation. What more could anyone contribute that would do this justice but for the tears that grace our cheeks.
Steven Wilson is a musical genius.
Yes. Yes he is!

I cried through the entire song. Always do when I hear this particular song.
many thanks bro.
Amazing video

Chip Matthews thank you Chip, it was emotional!
Seeing this live with full concert dynamics + the animation at Royal albert hall has been one of the most emotional experiences in music for me.
Nice to see people with empathy while listen to music... Don't excuse for your reaction. best regards from Germany and sorry for bad english...
Steven Wislon : *"You Fool , this isn't even my final form!"*
_raises you Routine_
No but seriously haha. This one puts a knot in your throat and makes you tear up. Routine literally rips your heart out of your chest and sends you into a corner to curl up into a ball and weep. Haha
Ulises Hernandez exactly
I can't listen to Routine very often because it's that powerful and emotional. My heart can't take it.
"Routine" is Steven Wilson's magnum opus. Absolutely gut-wrenching.
I am crying again :-( This song was captivating. I could not stop watching it. The video along with the song was so touching. I know we all have lost someone close to us in life so the emotions run deep.
Ann Waychoff music is such a personal thing sometimes, how it affects and touches you. Thanks for watching Ann.
Saw Steven Wilson in concert in November last year, he played this for the last song. I CRIED LIKE A BABY.
If you're human, there's no other way of reacting to this song and video. It's just overwhelming.
It is beautiful in its sadness, that's for sure. So is Routine. Man what a song that is.
It sure is a tear jerker!!!!
In tears ! Just so beautiful.
This just blows me away everytime im so with you
Thank you!👍😘🇸🇪

Beautiful😢
I saw Steven Wilson last year in Denver Colorado.. the show/music was phenomenal

"How do you respond to that?" One finds it difficult, it is a heart ripping and yet wonderful piece.
Beautiful.
Beautiful video and very respectable reaction. I love Steven's music and you do it credit here.
Routine or Drive Home by Steven Wilson.... both videos are tear jerkers and the songs are masterpieces...

this is a high point.
Nicely done......
You should react to Arriving Somewhere But not Here by Porcupine tree!
Sebastian hi Sebastian, I do know this song but I don't know I've seen it live. If it's on RUclips I'd love to watch it and review/react. Thanks
Honestly, Arriving somewhere is probably the most brilliant music out there.
Jim Newstead if you haven't already seen 'routine'.. By him too, you must.. It's even more devastating than' 'the Raven'... But i expect you have seen and heard it by now..

Hey Jim, if you haven't already, listen to "Routine" from Steven Wilson. You're in for a treat, for sure!
I would recommend taking a look at Leprous !
what a song, and i thought My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel was a sad one
I really Hope you Listen and Experience Storm Corrosion - Title Track. Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt Collaboration in 2012.
I reacted the same way as you, and the song without Jess Cope's Amazing Animation is moving but seeing it together with the music is well words cannot describe. Please check out the video Refuge as it will elicit the same reaction... My 2 favorite songs/videos of SW
