This was recorded after GE dropped sponsorship, since there’s no logo on the sign and the final announcement says “from all of us, _________ thanks for exploring Horizons”!
The music by itself is a masterpiece! Combined with the ride and effects and you have a world-class experience that will never be duplicated or surpassed in quality.
This was always my dream ride and now I can never physically experience it I really appreciate you putting this on here it gives me a chance to always live my dream
adder birdo No I have never even been to Disney world. This ride closed when I was young but I always wanted to go on this ride. I Think it is really neat. That's why I am glad there is a video of it.
yeah i went on it in 80s, i dont really remember the ride too well but i liked these type of dark rides and it was a cool sideways vehicle, they were relaxing and educational too. how come you never went to disneyworld? cost?
This ride was so educational. I remember riding this and it got me interested in the future, space travel, ideas about growing crops in the desert, etc. Now all that is actually happening or being experimented in reality. Now the new rides aren't educational at all, and if they were, the kids now wouldn't be interested or willing to ride them. Times have changed... For the worse IMO. However, I am not saying all kids are like this, but I have noticed the majority of them. Another example is Test Track. It explained some real-world tests cars go through before making it to production (road tests with the German and Belgian blocks, ABS Braking, corrosion test, etc) and showed riders what it was like to test cars. The new Test Track has none of that... Design a CGI car and all the ride does is "vroom" around in darkness showing which CGI car "won." People who have rode both the new and the old will know what I'm talking about. So, in my opinion, it's no wonder why some kids there days don't have an interest to learn.
+MrWonka The comment I made was just merely my opinion. I learn more and get the idea that innovations can be made more so during lectures than the "hands on" approach you described. everyone is different, and I learn better with lectures. that's just me.
Perfectly said. I cringe on Test Track 2.0 today as it is simply a video-game, dumbed down, non-real world applicable fantasy where they slapped screens with neon lights and CGI scenes over the original.
Thank you for this upload. It really brings back some childhood memories. Epcot was the most fascinating experience when I was a kid. Such a bright and vibrant vision of the future. Sad to hear that Horizons is no more. The last time I was in Orlando was back in 1990 right after Universal Studios Florida opened. It was the last family vacation we had before my parents divorced. I'd like to go back to Epcot sometime soon, even if some of the older attractions aren't around anymore.
At 13:20, I remembered seeing something like that on old Disneyworld promotional videos and such, but I never actually knew where it originally came from, looks like this finally answered that age old question for me
I don't think I was able to ever experience this ride when I was little, and honestly, after watching this, I wish I had :(, I was born in 1994, and yet not once was I able to experience this. I mean, I went on all the other ones like Universe of Energy, Test Track, Wonders of Life, Living Seas, etc., but not this? What? Honestly, I really hope they bring it back to the old horizons look or something, cause if they brought back Captain EO, then they can do the same for this.
This video has held up very well. I'm glad I caught mention of it on the show! This is the Epcot I miss. I love Mission Space and some of the new attractions but there's a palpable sense of nastagia in watching this. Thanx for sharing.
This ride closed a couple months after I was born, so I never got to ride it. But man did this ride look freaking awesome! I wish I got to ride this, it looks a lot like spaceship earth and I like ve that ride.
Anthony Studios It's not that Disney didn't see it. It was an immensely popular attraction that had a solid story, incredible innovations and proposed revolutionary ideas in technological progress. Disney knew its potential. There were simply too many factors and issues surrounding it like structural problems, no corporate sponsorship for like 6 years, and they couldn't update the attraction regularly as well. Missions Space was new, it introduced a new ride technology that was relatively more popular and it was financially a better idea to just completely get rid of Horizons and replace its pavilion. It's sad, this is a very positive and innovative ride, but the facts are what they are. Even so that just makes it sadder. Many deceased Epcot attractions have their problems stemmed from corporate sponsorships dropping the ride and it's so depressing.
+Joey Cardenas It is sad, I have many childhood memories with certain rides at Epcot and the Magic Kingdom. Just happy I get to relive it thru youtube. I really enjoyed this ride
Late 30's. I don't know if it was "popular," but for those of us who were fans it was special. The buildings early 1980's slant architecture. The interior design with the robotic figures, the giant Imax screen in the middle of the ride, choosing how you wanted the ride to end by space, land, or sea. And, last but not least the soundtrack. Not only was it downright perfect, it was to positive as Bush & Cheney were to negative.
Okay, I admit. THIS they should've kept. It's a real treat for the eyes and gets your imagination thinking about the future. Kind of like Star Trek. If there's anything wrong with this, it's that maybe it should've been a bit shorter. Like, cut six minutes or something
this ride was the shizzz!! i remember when i was like 14 back in the late 90s and my older brother (around 17ish) we went on this ride like 8 times in a row to make different end of the ride scenarios lol
It looked like it was a combination of two rides - Space Ship Earth and Carousel of Progress, with a touch of the Star Tours at the end, that wasn't around yet.
back then yeah this was the shyt we are talking 1992, but this ride wouldn't last now, if I got on this ride now, I would keep saying to myself where is the ending!!!!...
since technology got advanced you would kind of expect more advanced stuff on rides like this today, this ride wouldn't match up to todays standards because the 80's and 90's technology is so out dated!!!
well how come they NEVER improved this ride but instead tore it down all the rids these days suck in comparison ! using video and of course cgi no real ingenuity
I know.. today it's more of an emphasis on 'let's put them through a virtual reality roller coaster ride and try to make 'em puke' 80% of Universal Studios attractions are like this.
It's a shame you can see here in 1998 how the ride is breaking down and under maintained. The dad's legs on the upside down stationary bike no longer move. The space crystal in the science lab is no longer moves and lights up. Little details like that are lost on later audiences due to disney's lack of care toward one of its greatest rides. I guess losing the GE sponsorship just accelerated the end.
Disney didn't care. The only reason the reopened Horizons in the first place was so that there was an attraction besides Wonders of Life open in Future World. GE didn't want to sponsor an outdated ride and nobody else did either. So they were forced to close Horizons due to operating fees. Now there is a much worse quality ride in its place because they were too lazy to pay for the 10 million rehab of the pavilion. BUT somehow they could afford that which was 10x more than the rehab. Once Test Track opened it was obvious Horizons was done for.
Lizzy The Geeky Wonder I made that comment quite a while ago but it is still basically correct. Disney could have corrected the structural problems but it wouldn't have been worth it because of the cost. Horizons was very expensive to maintain aswell so it just wasn't worth the hassle for them. Mission Space was just a cheaper alternative.
I never said you're wrong. There are so many different aspects to Horizons' closure it just seemed like a logical business decision. I don't think any of us will truly understand.

The music by itself is a masterpiece! Combined with the ride and effects and you have a world-class experience that will never be duplicated or surpassed in quality.
never? Never say never. The ride wasn't perfect and it can certainly be surpassed! No matter how good things are there is ALWAYS room for improvement
You're absolutely right. That's progress! :)
I remember this! I had forgotten this ride even existed!!
"oh it went by so quickly!"
Never truer words....
This was always my dream ride and now I can never physically experience it I really appreciate you putting this on here it gives me a chance to always live my dream
did you go on it?
adder birdo No I have never even been to Disney world. This ride closed when I was young but I always wanted to go on this ride. I Think it is really neat. That's why I am glad there is a video of it.

if we can dream of it, we can do it!
I used to ride this attraction every time I went to epcot because I loved hearing about the future.
my favorite part is the talking robot butler saying with grand old music
This ride was so educational. I remember riding this and it got me interested in the future, space travel, ideas about growing crops in the desert, etc. Now all that is actually happening or being experimented in reality.

+MrWonka and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. to each their own. cheers.
most of these rides have limited time so enjoy them before they are gone, this ride was popular for some reason.
Perfectly said. I cringe on Test Track 2.0 today as it is simply a video-game, dumbed down, non-real world applicable fantasy where they slapped screens with neon lights and CGI scenes over the original.
Thank you
I miss this ride so much! went on it back in '86
most of these rides have limited time so enjoy them before they are gone, this ride was popular for some reason.
Great memories!
I loved this ride!!!! Many childhood memories
this ride was popular for some reason.
Amazing
Earth lifestyle goes on

I loved, loved, loved this ride. Too bad it's not there any more. :(

Was definitely my favorite ride as a kid! A true shame that it and World of Motion are gone for good... ;(
What about Journey Into Imagination & Wonders Of Life?
BRING BACK HORIZONS!!!!
They should’ve updated it where the new plot should be experiencing the 22nd Century!
Great big beautiful tomorrow!
I don't think I was able to ever experience this ride when I was little, and honestly, after watching this, I wish I had :(, I was born in 1994, and yet not once was I able to experience this. thank you uploading this video..my wife tells me it was a great ride back in the day...

+Sam Vigorito I totally agree
This ride closed a couple months after I was born, so I never got to ride it. But man did this ride look freaking awesome! I wish I got to ride this, it looks a lot like spaceship earth and I like ve that ride.
I almost forgot about this attraction. Thanks for uploading this!
I've never been on this ride but I would of much rather go on this than Mission Space anytime...
agreed. If only Disney saw that

Joey Cardenas its always money... such a sad reality

I think you can still have a good time in Epcot even if it's not as good as it used to be. WOrld Showcase is still awesome
Greatest dark ride ever!
are you serious?
Yeah man!
how old are u, i dont remember it too well, why was it so popular?

are you like really into science or these things?
how much did sponsors give to disney each year?
wonderful video, thank you

Wow this ride looks so stunning and well orchestrated now that im seeing it again. Kinda makes mission space look like a rinky dink mall simulator.
It looked like it was a combination of two rides - Space Ship Earth and Carousel of Progress, with a touch of the Star Tours at the end, that wasn't around yet.
but better
@ kparc Parc: Horizons was actually meant to be a sequel ride to the carousel of progress ride.
This made me motion sick as hell when I rode it
I'm pretty sure America and her culture peaked around 1972.
shaboythetom cool. this ride wasn't about culture. but cool.
Past futures
back then yeah this was the shyt we are talking 1992, but this ride wouldn't last now, if I got on this ride now, I would keep saying to myself where is the ending!!!!...
what you mean?
since technology got advanced you would kind of expect more advanced stuff on rides like this today, this ride wouldn't match up to todays standards because the 80's and 90's technology is so out dated!!!
6:25 SMELL HOSE ORANGES!
Punch Buggie for a 4d experience, smell an orange when watching this
Imagineers predicting Zoom meetings at 11:50!
Where do i smell the oraganges?
Isn’t the song in the home future
Google Horizon Resurrected! VR experience!
4:42: It sounds like the Halloween theme XD
I don't know where the moon is!
well how come they NEVER improved this ride but instead tore it down all the rids these days suck in comparison ! using video and of course cgi no real ingenuity
She-ra Prime a sinkhole was growing under it
+Notelu they built a new building over it though. Isn't mission space over the same location? so I don't think it was because of a sink hole.
Brandon Ly they put poles over the sinkhole during mission space's construction
I know.. today it's more of an emphasis on 'let's put them through a virtual reality roller coaster ride and try to make 'em puke' 80% of Universal Studios attractions are like this.
it lost sponsorship and no extra money to maintain it.

do you think the ride was really outdated, i mean it showed the future that might occur, how was it outdated?
***** It was not outdated, it was and still is great.
