I’m literally crying. I was feeling nostalgic and wound up watching the newer version, then was able to find this. What happened to us? Jokes about taxes and talking to you like you’re a five year old? But you listen to this version and it makes you so proud to be a human. You feel a brotherhood with everyone who has ever existed and will ever exist. One with the whole world, and hopeful and striving for the future. You used to enter Epcot like a god.
I agree. I think I’ve only ridden on this ride version once in the mid-2000’s, but I have vivid memories about the communications tunnel and that virtual classroom. I also agree that there is a sense of oneness with humanity and the world that is sorely lacking in the newer version, but also a bit of dread and apprehension about the ambiguity of the future as well beneath the hopefulness of the ending. Lots of emotional nuance, especially with implications of technology and communications being used both for good and for bad. Gives me lots of Studio Ghibli vibes, especially the film, “Castle In The Sky”, which explores similar themes. That’s probably why I like this ride version so much, and appreciate it even more now.
The most depressing part to me is how hopeful this was. In reality humanity went the opposite way-to anti-intellectualism instead of an intelligent and peaceful future. It depresses me a lot
@@zacharytrosch3406 it was replaced with an interactive video about the future. In many peoples opinion it isn't as good or as meaningful of a a send off.
Agreed! This ride as well as the other original EPCOT rides were so inspiring. When I was a kid in the 80s, visiting EPCOT was stepping into the future. It was edu-tainment at it's finest. Then add all of the original scores to all of the rides added strong emotional ties that left you singing/humming them for years to come. So sad how much Disney has changed their most unique part that ever existed into a park with a bit of an identity crisis today.
"We now have the ability, and the responsibility, to build new bridges of acceptance and cooperation between us. To create a better world for ourselves and our children, as we continue our amazing journey aboard Spaceship Earth." I just wish that line had been kept. That's a message we so desperately need to be reminded of today.
Love this older version of SE! There's SO much truth to that old saying....."if it aint broke, don't fix it"!! They dramatically "cheapened" the ride adding the little dumb Jetsons style cartoon at the end! The older version and its ending were much more awe inspiring!
This is the version I was lucky enough to always go on, it was my favorite ride of all of disney parks in that era, 4 to 5 times a visit I would get to ride it. It was always be in my heart
I listen to this audio every time I'm feeling blue. It takes me back to trips with my family. My dad still says every time a neighbor burns leaves in the spring and fall that it smells like Burning Rome (not the other way around). This clear, perfect soundtrack takes me back to amazing trips with my family. I appreciate it so much!
What is it about EPCOT smells? The smell of the water in The Land always gets me. And burning Rome smells kinda like Doritos. I was very pleased to see everything smells the same after not having been for years
Thank you for keeping this alive. This was one of my favorite rides in Epcot and it was at a time I almost wanted to be an imagineer bc of how inspiring some of their old rides used to be. Just watching this makes me tear up. I feel out of sponsorships they should of fought to keep this the same, its the closest thing to Disney and their way of thinking in progress. The end part always gets me. Just like Meet the Robinsons, the message is so strong. Just keep moving forward. And thats what humanity does.
Agree wholeheartedly. The new version is crap! I miss the grandeur of the old finale. The wonder, the gravitas, watching the shimmering fiberoptics. Now it's "Hey kids play with this screen." I hate it!
I went to Disney when I was 4 years old in 2004, and I still remember this ride so well!!! This is the first time I've gotten to see this version again
Also, you mixing in the original audio along side it really made me happy. All the other versions are so hard to hear. But, this feels like Im reliving the ride. Ty again. I know theres a hd versioin with the old audio, but the fact I can see the old scenes at the end really make this my favorite one of them all. No joke reliving the city scape scene and the future scenes brought me to fucking tears. Theres no comparison. They should of NEVER got rid of it.
I had been going to Disneyland since 1990, but my first time going to Disney World was 2019… never heard this version… I wish Jeremy would have thanked the Phoenicians
In the new version, they do mention the Phoenicians. They should have also thanked ancient India for Sanskrit, the world's first actual language, ultimately giving rise to other Indo and Ayran languages.
Seriously! Everything from the communications tunnel right before the space reveal all the way through the end was just magical. It was my favorite part of the ride and they fucking gutted it for that stupid end video.
Not quite. Spaceship Earth's story was originally the history of communication, since its first sponsor was Bell Systems. When Seimens took over in 2007 it became the history of technology.
I agree Ian, it is definitely more focused on technology, but i think if you look at how the communication has advanced, it is impossible to move forward without looking at how technology has prompted and caused many of these communication advances. I do like the story line and the narration of Jeremy Irons over Dame Judi Dench though... truly a history lesson I don't mind listening and viewing multiple times
@Notwo Islamb > Yeah...I'm surprised they haven't already marched on over to Epcot to say "Excuse us...we'll be needing this..." as they proceed to take Spaceship Earth over to Hollywood Studios to use it for the Death Star.
Has anyone ever really said why they ripped out the whole last third of the ride...which was the most heartwarming, hope-filled part of the whole ride? (that music still gets me all teary-eyed!)
I think the internet became too commonplace, and that section of the ride became outdated. But instead of updating that section, they replaced it with a poorly animated, more fictional future that does nothing to make me hopeful about the actual future. It’s a shame I never got to ride the attraction with the final third.
They went over budget but already had ripped out most of the sets so they couldn't just revert back. That's why they just threw a sheet on everything and then came up with the video screen idea. Whatever they originally intended for the ending scenes didn't happen.
I forgot just how damn good the ending was before they "updated" it. The screens and mirror part pale in comparison. It will be interesting to see what they do with the next renovation coming up.
“East, west, north and south all roads lead to Rome” I always remember that from riding this as a kid. I swear this ride is what inspired me to major in History.
Spaceship Earth is one of my favorite rides, even though there's nothing thrilling about it. I just visited Epcot a couple weeks ago, and as with every visit, I rode this multiple times (it helped that the crowd levels were super low; I got to walk on every time). My last major Disney vacation was in 2006, so that was the version I always remembered...but I have to say, the stuff hanging off the ceiling at the end (like that classroom) always made my anxiety go nuts. XD My brain kept saying "Oh god what if the display falls off and crushes you?" and I couldn't fully relax until I felt I'd passed far enough that I was out of danger. LOL I'm really disappointed, though, that they got rid of that entire section and just phoned it in with a screen on the back of the seat. On one hand yeah, it IS kind of fun...the first time. They could easily have just made that part of the after-ride room. But I can't help thinking that if they remade the last part of the ride, it would just be screens of Reddit and RUclips and Facebook. of people yelling at each other and telling each other how stupid they are. That's essentially what the internet has become, hasn't it? :P Hearing the hopefulness of this narration, before anyone had a CLUE what we'd devolve into, makes me a little sad!
To be fair, Jeremy Irons does imply that technology can be used for both good and for bad, when he says, “Will these seemingly infinite communications become a flood of electronic babble, or will we use this power to usher in a new age of understanding and cooperation, on this, our Spaceship Earth?”
I was blessed as a child to visit this park in 1992 and in 1994 and it was my father‘s favorite ride and my least favorite ride. Just last year I was able to return with my own six year old daughter and I have to say it was my absolute favorite ride 😂
Now that they're doing renovations on the current version, I was curious what the old version was like since I was too young to remember it and I'm so used to the current one. But dang, as much as I love the refurbished one because I'm so used to it and kinda grew up with it, I'm kinda sad I missed out on this one, it's seemed so cool, especially the ending. Now I'm curious to see what the new one will bring.
The whole descent was magical. I'm sorry you missed out. Thankfully there's videos like this. It's not quite like being there, but it's at least recorded.
yep the lightning effect is the only reminant that is currently visible in the ride. You can see some of the old lighting effects above, however they are never in operations and remain off. The rest of the show scenes are assumed to be covered with a black tarp that is easily noticeable if you just look to either direction instead of focusing on the screen they want you to look at. Due to these scenes being tarped off, IMO the ride feels very claustrophobic bc you are just going backwards down a narrow pitch black tunnel.
Yeah this was my favorite thing in all of disney world. now theres a stupid computer screen glaring in your face the whole ride down. As if I wasn't staring at a screen for 13 hours in the car on the way to disneyworld.
WOW! I am absolutely impressed!!! Very excellent job with the quality of filming and editing, it's so rare to find videos of attractions that are smooth and steady like this one. Do you have one of the Carousel of Progress? That is my parents favorite attraction and they can't go to Disney World now due to the current situation going on.
This must be the version I rode as a kid, and I surprisingly don’t remember it too well. I still love the current version, it is my favourite ride in operation, but this version totally blows it out of the water. Especially with that beautiful music at the end. I have to admit I like the fiber optics even better than the visuals on Avatar Flight of Passage
What an epic teardown. If Disney leadership is smart they'll set aside ego and hubris and watch all four hours and learn something. Most probably they'll assign a staffer to digest and summarize into a PowerPoint because exec time is "too valuable" to spend four hours watching a video. I just visited Tokyo DisneySea for the Fantasy Springs opening and the differences are so striking. Imagineering is unleashed there without Disney execs driving the budgets and siphoning from the parks to boost up the streaming money pit.
Braselton94 I agree! We just went last week and this is my first visit since 2006 and I was so disappointed. I feel like they made it more relatable for kids these days or something, I hate it. I miss this version :(
I was talking to my mom the other day and she told me that when she rode this ride years ago, she never thought the concepts they talk about could become a reality..
wasn't there a spaceman and lunar ship at top with Neal Armstrong talking. briefly lit up, then showed the world from moon? I know that's what I remember …..
11:00 The fact that some of this is still there to this day just hiding behind a black curtain angers me! They could of updated it for todays future but instead they covered it and made a crappy cartoon video.
As the "interactive" screens from the current version continue to age, the difference in quality between the second half when comparing the two is apparent.
i like this ending SOOOO much more than what they have now. the stupid MaKe oUr OwN FuTuRe! it's so cringey and dumb i always hide my face when it takes the picture at the beginning and never answer the questions. i hope with the new updates they get rid of it.
I thought the ending was better in this version than the new one the ipad part was good the first time but was more of a gimic this one was soo much nicer
The imagineers should not mess with anything till they have the plan and the budget to do it...they shortened the ride and added a Steve Jobs scene and called it "reimagined" pffffff
Disney only caters to the low IQ masses these days....hey lets put Guardians of the Galaxy in epcot....who cares whether or not it actually fits with the theming of the park...bigger, badder ,faster is all that matters to disney now.
Just looked it up - you are right!! It was Vic Perrin until 1986. My first trip was 1987 so I always associate Walter Cronkite (plus to me, he's the epitome of that kind of narrator)
I first rode Spaceship Earth in 1983 when Epcot was called EPCOT Center. I remember the Vic Perrin version vaguely because we went again in 1984 and again in 1985. I missed out on Walter Cronkites version but went again after Jeremy Irons version and his was by far the best. The Judi Dench version can’t measure up to Jeremy’s narration plus it was more epic and there was a sense of hope for the future. The music was better and there was far more to the visual experience.
Absolutely criminal they took out the second half of this ride and replaced it with an interactive touchscreen. Completely ruined the essence of the ride.
11:19 "Is my baby brother okay doctor?" "Surprise Tommy! Your baby sister is doing just fine." This hits WAY different today. The truth was in plain sight the whole time.
This is definitely the best and most deluxe version of SSE, so I can see how the 2007 version is a downgrade with the stupid screens as the ending, but i still think the 2007 version is great. Went to Epcot recently and my love for SSE grew even more despite it not being the best version.
For some reason, I remember this version, but with the new narrator? Am I imagining things or was there a version between this one and the newest one today?
This is the version I went on when I was little and I remember it with the new narrator too! I know it can't have been, but I just can't picture it any other way! So weird.
By the look of the Marquee, this video was most likely filmed between 2005 and 2007 since AT&T dropped their sponsorship in 2004 and Siemens picked up their sponsorship in 2005
I liked the older version of the ride better, the "interactive" screens added in 2007 just ruin the storyline and just make today's kids not listen to the educational segments and look at the boring feature that blocks the screen, and there is not even all cities in the United States. It just ruins a once great ride, READ THIS COMMENT IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TO DISNEY BEFORE 2007.
Maddox Cox I like it, I have never been on the 2007 version but personally I like the history part and the ride itself more than the screens, so for me personally I disagree that it is ruined. It's one of my favorite rides an disneyworld
Maddox Cox i think it really preference, I grew up with this version, but someone who grew up with the new version prob is more bound to enjoy that one.
I miss this version so much. One of the classics they should have never changed.

@@NinnintenderThere are some lightning bolts from the original fiber optic show that still survive. It happens when you’re going backwards
As the "interactive" screens from the current version continue to age, the difference in quality between the second half when comparing the two is apparent.
Man I'd totally forgotten that the ending got replaced with Steve Jobs and string lights...feeling as ripped off as I did when I was 12 all over again
i like this ending SOOOO much more than what they have now. the stupid MaKe oUr OwN FuTuRe! it's so cringey and dumb i always hide my face when it takes the picture at the beginning and never answer the questions. i hope with the new updates they get rid of it.
I surely miss this ending to this ride it was way better! I also miss the seasonal passes and less crowds!
I’m pretty sure they use the sphere and track at 12:17 for Cosmic Rewind
I thought the ending was better in this version than the new one the ipad part was good the first time but was more of a gimic this one was soo much nicer
The imagineers should not mess with anything till they have the plan and the budget to do it...they shortened the ride and added a Steve Jobs scene and called it "reimagined" pffffff
Disney only caters to the low IQ masses these days....hey lets put Guardians of the Galaxy in epcot....who cares whether or not it actually fits with the theming of the park...bigger, badder ,faster is all that matters to disney now.
One reason that really sticks out to me is that a 1:49 - 1:51, there is a small duration that you can hear part of a speech Adolf h gave in germany
Tomorrow's Child... Classic Disney. 💯💯💯❤️
Always keep the dream of tomorrow alive
I rode this version but dont remember a thing from this version
When was this taped, I know it was 2007 because I saw Project Tomorrow at the end of the video, but was it July 8? The last day it was still open?
I can't remember the exact date because I filmed over several days before the closing to get all the angles I needed.
@@Yodatc I'm gonna guess June 28-July 8
who remembers Walter Cronkite on the original?!
Oh, I do! But there was a narrator before Cronkite as well...
I went on this yesterday and it was nowhere near this amazing. Goddamn did Disney butcher this ride.
Absolutely criminal they took out the second half of this ride and replaced it with an interactive touchscreen. Completely ruined the essence of the ride.
I really like part of the ending music
Thank you for this. ^3^ *sniffles*
Love M's voice, but Jeremy Irons is the best.

"Is my baby brother okay doctor?"
"Surprise Tommy! Your baby sister is doing just fine."
This hits WAY different today. The truth was in plain sight the whole time.
??
Some of this was there the first time i went to disneyworld in 2015... i went in February and it was completely different
Well in the new version, the rooms in between the factory part and the space part are different.
This is the version I went on when I was little and I remember it with the new narrator too! I know it can't have been, but I just can't picture it any other way! So weird.
Oddly I remember this version with s different narrator. Perhaps it's the Mandela effect, but I seem to remember more of a lead up to the space area.
1:51 was that a heil or am I just hearing things?
It sounds like part of the speech he gave in Berlin
By the look of the Marquee, this video was most likely filmed between 2005 and 2007 since AT&T dropped their sponsorship in 2004 and Siemens picked up their sponsorship in 2005
Well, as I was the one who filmed it, I can assure you it was filmed in 2007 just before it shut down for the Dame Judy Dench refurb.
And this is where we get music from storytelling aka story. Music 🎼 🎶 🎵 is chapter book 📖. And lyrics aka words are storytelling too.
It's one of my favorite rides an disneyworld
ok, but it looke better, my first trip to Disney Was 2010, but the screens were so boring and ruin the "omnimover inside of a ball" feeling
I meant like "ruined" the publicity of attention, the attraction is still enjoyable
Maddox Cox i think it really preference, I grew up with this version, but someone who grew up with the new version prob is more bound to enjoy that one.
I still don’t know how the paperboy animatronic broke during the 2007 refurbishment. And why it was put in the back facing backwards.
Why did they change the second half of the ride!? I will never understand. That stupid cartoon thing.
Judi really phoned in the new version, and the screens ruin the whole ending. Disney is lost.
Ya.
Although I like her voice, this version is easily the best.
