The ONLY issue with this device is that once you go past the Early Bird prices, the Portal becomes as expensive as a Steam Deck, which will play everything that this thing plays and more with the exception of Android games. The Portal does have a far-superior screen and D-Pad to the Deck, but the Deck is infinitely more customizable and comes with its own case. Not to mention there's a massive Deck community if anything goes awry with it.
Curious what country you're from? I keep seeing this parroted but can't see it in the numbers for myself. @@sillydude17 I'm in America. A brand-new OG Steam Deck can be bought from Valve for $399. The Portal 2 Pro is also $399 according to the AYN website, but that's only for right now. Once the Early-bird pricing goes away, those prices will rise dramatically. As a matter of fact, the Portal 2 Pro will wind up being virtually the same price as the 512 GB Steam Deck OLED ($539 vs. $549). The Steam Deck will play ALL the same games that the Portal 2 will with the exception of Android games and then play the vast majority of the PC library out there. The Portal 2 will not. And they are virtually the same price. That is not a small deal or an empty point, especially for people that want to play their games on the go - not tethered to their home. As far as streaming goes, spending $399 for a portable device merely to stream with it when you could buy a Logitech G-Cloud for half the price - or use a device that you already have sounds too much like ice-skating uphill. I mean, people can do what they wish with their money and their devices, but everything that you said about the Portal 2 is just as true for the Deck - and the Deck can play many of those titles anywhere else that you are. If this device was $250, it'd be a no-brainer to recommend to people over both the Deck and the Retroid Pocket 5. But both of those devices punch far above their weight class for the money compared to the Portal 2, even though the Portal 2 is still amazing at its job. The Portal 2 should really only be purchased if a person needs the very best Switch/Wii U/PS2/PS3 performance on an Android device, must have the best 7-inch panel out there or wants a large screen device. @JonathanTroth413 Right! At this point it's going to be diminishing returns. Switch emulation is dead -- Nintendo made sure of that-- and no PS3 emulation. These handheld companies make these devices in hopes that someone will make an emulator. It's no guarantee that someone will make PS3 emulation and Switch emulation for Android
Can't get retroarch to work on the portal. Play store says retroarch plus is not compatible with this phone. I tried side loading the latest version and it just opens and closes. Anyone else experience this issue?
Glass front kills me. What about etched glass all on the front like the higher end SteamDeck models? I know some want eye popping reflective displays but cleaning them all the time is a pain. Etched is a pretty good middle ground for me. You can clean it with pretty much anything and wipes away quickly. Shiny glass need work.
At this point I will stick on my rp3+ i will buy another android handheld if they make a psp go or Xperia play design. You can use it like a small tablet and play android games that don’t support game controller.
You know what bothers me of these android gaming handhelds is that to get the most out of these gaming handhelds is that you need to set up emulators etc to be able to get as much from your investment as possible, but for some people out there who thinks they can buy this and play tons of great quality games will sorely be disappointed to know that android games will be a complete waste of time.
Most people buying stuff like this already know what they’re getting into. We can’t dumb down every product so much that mouth breather Joe only has to hit the power button and be immediately satisfied. That thought process completely ruins innovation and makes every one suffer for the idiots.
@@clblanchard08 I totally get what you are saying, but the reality is that this is an android device essentially geared towards android gaming first and foremost. Emulation is where you get the most value out of this device and that is a no brainer, but if you look at the value of the device solely based on just android gaming then its a complete waste cause android gaming is just bad. A very few odd ones are ok, but not worth investing this type of money. Another point is that they will eventually need to change the way these handhelds are built to accommodate a wider audience because they need to improve on sales. They will eventually hit a cap because they are not really catering for a wider audience. Purely thinking about a business that wants to increase profits and value of the company itself. Also it doesn't have to ruin innovation at all to cater to a wider audience. I would agree on the ruining of innovation based on the types of games being developed vs what was created about 10 years ago. Most developers makes games simpler to accommodate more people so that I can understand stifles innovation to an extent. It still doesn't have to though.
AYN should definitely update this to the Snapdragon 8 Elite later this year, and then I would love to see a larger version with an 8" 1600p 144hz OLED screen. (Since the Legion Go 2 is now rumored to be moving down to 1200p I'm going to say every other handheld in existence needs a 1600p OLED screen.)
There is a price advantage to getting older chips. If you want newer stuff, you’re paying X86 prices. While there are still some advantages, that puts them in a different position where the volume of sales would decrease.
Really, the Steam Deck is like 800p and it's fine. I don't see why these handhelds need to be such insane resolutions. The screens are so small, you genuinely can't tell the difference anyway.
Can you confirm they fixed their Android OS issues because back in September 2024 Ashley said they fixed them on the Odin 2 and Mini and it's now January with no updates. Desktop mode rotates when you connect to an external screen, and when you play Drastic or Citra MMJ using the second screen feature the external display also rotates. Ayn needs to work on their OS rather than a new flipping OLED screen

I'm wondering how the portal will be when using the touch screen and reaching toward the middle of the device. The regular o2 is kind of perfect size for that. Haven't really seen any new reviews using it like that
I have mixed feelings here. It's a nice piece of engineering but does it really make sense? OK, it's running Android, but you're not going to use it to browse the web, answer emails etc. It's really mostly for gaming. Problem : for Android gaming, unless you play at home or in a place where reliable free wi-fi is available, or unless you use your phone as a hot-spot, you're going to be limited to games that are 100% offline when playing on the go. It's also not going to be suited for portrait orientation. Then, emulation. Not to compare apples and oranges (120Hz 7” OLED Display and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are appealing) but most if not all handheld consoles can be emulated of cheaper devices. Same for 8 and 16-bit systems. That leaves PSP at 4x / N64 / Saturn / PS2 / GC etc. for the Odin 2. We're starting to talk about a niche within a niche. As for PC gaming... I'm sure some people are going to buy the Odin 2 and (try to) play games from GOG or Steam but how many games will actually work? I have the feeling the Odin 2 is stuck in some uncomfortable position: overkill and overpriced for (most) emulation needs, not really adapted for PC gaming, and must connect to wi-fi for Android gaming (likely limited to landscape position). It's a tempting handheld device but I fail to see what I would do with it right now, especially at that price point.
Ps2 is a MASSIVE library, not to mention all the others. Plus the price difference is not that much if you live in a first world country and are single. I make barely more than my old min wage job, and can easily justify a portal pro
Emulation, active cooling, battery life. My phone is for work, calling, texting, RUclips. Portal is for gaming. Portal lasts longer and is faster, with bigger screen and great controller.
Can you test Dead Space 1 and 2, When playing Dead Space 1 and 2 if you notice the camera at the main menu being pulled to the left or right corner turn on "relative mouse control" in winlator, it'll fix that issue. I also noticed a weird bug with winlator, when you're in a game if you open the task manager and unselect one of the cores from the affinity option, like if you had all cores active but unselect core 7, confirm the change and then open the affinity option again and reselect core 7 and hit save, it forces games that had a hard time running at 60fps to be a solid 60 fps...
So at this price point is it something you would consider buying or skip it all together?

Also, you may not have had a budget phone, but the Google chip in that 7a is barely supported vs a snapdragon in emulation, the odin 2 can play basically all of the ps2 library really well.
Looks great
Dude repeats the same exact stuff twice in the first few minutes. I'd be convinced he was AI if other creators hadn't mentioned they've met up with him.
Wish this had the 8 Elite SOC
Why do they pump out devices?
i dont have the money to buy so many i want
i only they had one with the new 8 elite chip in it... would be an amazing device i like the form factor and screen and battery i just want that better chip!!
why buy this one if i can get a Steamdeck lcd 256GB for 420€?
This fit in your pocket.
@soragranda no it doesn't, the hell are you watching. This is not an RP5
Because who wants to game on a crappy LCD?
@shalindelta7 I can pocket my switch. You just need bigger pockets XD.
Is not just size but width of the device, steam deck loses in that by a lot by being too bulky, this odin 2 portal is definitely more pocketed than steam deck.
Portal is a shade smaller, much lighter, and has a much better screen. Stream from your PC/PS/Xbox, and you save significant battery life playing any game you want.
Retro review, nice!
9:19 the s24 ultra is pretty outdated whith all phones having better snap degaon 8 elite chips beat it now by alot i am waiting for a snap dragon 8 elite handheld now
2:25 may be don't use a dominantly black wallpaper and a dark grey background to compare two screens with black bezels.
I refuse to buy ANY handheld until we can emulate PS3 directly on android.
We need to test cyberpunk in winlator on this thing, please
Hey bro can i ask what's your personal smartphone? Is it Android or iPhone (iOS)? 😅
😶
Can't get retroarch to work on the portal. Play store says retroarch plus is not compatible with this phone. I tried side loading the latest version and it just opens and closes. Anyone else experience this issue?
Glass front kills me. What about etched glass all on the front like the higher end SteamDeck models? I know some want eye popping reflective displays but cleaning them all the time is a pain. Etched is a pretty good middle ground for me. You can clean it with pretty much anything and wipes away quickly. Shiny glass need work.
AYN gon hurt nobody. Just get on down.
There has been an absurd amount of handheld in the first 14 days of January 2025.
That is due to CES falling in early January. Handhelds are just the growing tech atm.
It can run Crysis!!!
The point of this IS emulation dude. Are you OK?
I want this size but something that runs Linux or Windows.
What size Micro SD card will it support up to? 1TB??? 2 TB??
Didn't knew people have s24 ultra in there pockets
AYN should definitely update this to the Snapdragon 8 Elite later this year, and then I would love to see a larger version with an 8" 1600p 144hz OLED screen.
(Since the Legion Go 2 is now rumored to be moving down to 1200p I'm going to say every other handheld in existence needs a 1600p OLED screen.)
Nope it's way to expensive
Hopefully they do upgrade it to the 8 elite, that chip has full Linux driver support, they will squeeze so much compatibility and performance.
8 elite is a expensive chip. Price will increase.
Winlator latest version is 9.0
Nobody does a review like ETA does.
lol
Of course not......they do it better.
Not exactly a good thing since ETA does a pretty poor job
how is the m&k on screen keymapper? does it work on codm or more ?

Of course ...
Internal up to 1tb...
+ MicroSD-Card support 1 or 2tb if you want...

Crisis is running better than Cyberpunk on the new RTX 5090 ( no DLSS)
If only they wait for the Qualcomm 8 Elite, hopefully they release the same device with that SoC next year.
The processor cannot be current gen. Thats not how it works. Small operations cannot compete cost wise much less get a source to buy it.
That’s gonna drive up the cost of the handheld by a lot.
Also, it doesn't matter if you have a stronger chip if developers aren't making the emulators.
@treyhay4543 True, but that is why it matters that 8 elite have FULL Linux drivers support, people already run rpsc3 (ps3 emulator) via container (thermux) on a 8 elite phone, 30fps 720p, running really good.
@@DoubleDragon5180 People will likely pay for that.
I don’t see much appeal since my phone can do everything it offers and some. This might be ideal for those with extra cash and no idea where to spend it. As for me, the Steam Deck covers all my gaming needs-for now.
Your phone doesn’t have active cooking. I think some of you really underrate what that does for performance
@ I might be tempted to get an Android gaming handheld if it actually has active COOKING. 😅
Yeah active COOLING is the main reason why would get an Android handheld over a phone.
hahah good old days of that being the standard.
Shiny plastic is a hard no
hopefully there will be a retroid pocket 5 pro with Snapdragon 8 gen 2 and analog on top of the dpad, because odin 2 portal is too big for me.
Probably won't be but we'll see
I'm waiting for a snapdragon 8 elite handheld and linux and Android dual boot support
😂😂 It will not happen anytime soon, if you ever have products from them you can tell they are the same company shipping from same location, even the dock station box design is the exact same thing…
@@dm.3145Probably the Odin 3 late this year.
@@CbazDHaxor but i still hope...
There won't.
Will it run moonlight 🌙 streaming service from a PC?
Yes
It most definitely will. It’s a perfect streaming device. Check out the video from Joey’s Retro Handhelds. He shows off streaming with Artemis/Apollo.
will be perfect device for this ofc
Turbo function?
Nah, am saving up and waiting for Switch 2.
128 GB is not enough for an android device in 2025; 256 GB should be the minimum... Although, I think at this price, I would prefer to get a used Steam Deck with LCD.
I make barely more than my old min wage job, and can easily justify a portal pro
why would i just not use my s24 ultra? waste of money buying android handheld
Portal max booked early bird
we have android phone run all games, why a person must buy android handheld??why? they must produce it by AMD
Emulation, active cooling, battery life. My phone is for work, calling, texting, RUclips. Portal is for gaming. Portal lasts longer and is faster, with bigger screen and great controller.
I would like to see Hogwarts Legacy run on this device
crysis remastered on the steamdeck looks better.
legion go sFrom this price point, i would rather buy legion go s.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 NOOOO😭😭😭😮💨😮💨😮💨😫😩
Can you test Dead Space 1 and 2, When playing Dead Space 1 and 2 if you notice the camera at the main menu being pulled to the left or right corner turn on "relative mouse control" in winlator, it'll fix that issue.
I also noticed a weird bug with winlator, when you're in a game if you open the task manager and unselect one of the cores from the affinity option, like if you had all cores active but unselect core 7, confirm the change and then open the affinity option again and reselect core 7 and hit save, it forces games that had a hard time running at 60fps to be a solid 60 fps...
If it would have had gen3 the overall performance would have actually been worse. Proof = All of Ayaneos latest units run gen3 and all perform worse
Unfortunately it's limited by the Android system, SKIP
I'd rather wait for Switch 2 which has dlss
