I used this channel to help make a decision once about 3 years ago I've watched every single video since 😅 There's just something so homely and familiar about it.. can't really explain it
Thank you for doing the review. Looking forward to more comparison videos and a from time to time best handheld. Yearly is just a bit too long to wait😂
As a guy who owns an OLED Steam Deck I was fighting between getting this or a Retroid Pocket 5, because I just wanted a more portable device to play games on the go that was smaller than the Deck and could give me some Android games to play. In the end I went with the RP5 for its price point, it would have been nonsense to spend 400+€ on a device that could potentially bring me to not use my Steam Deck anymore. This device is super solid indeed and I probably would’ve bought it without a Deck in my house. Nice video as usual, I enjoyed my snack and drink while watching.
I was in the same position but i went with the Odin 2 Portal. I'll see whether if it was the bad decision or not when mine gets shipped. The idea behind my decision was: I love my deck but this one should be lighter = easier to hold for longer sessions and has a better battery life.
@ you didn’t go wrong man, I simply went through the idea that the extra money wouldn’t be worth for me, personally, but the Odin 2 Portal is a fantastic device.
Goo with the RP5. I have the Odin 2 and most people won't use the extra overhead you'll get from the portal. The RP5 has a beautiful OLED screen and enough power to play pretty much almost anything. The things is doesn't emulate are usually systems that you probably wouldn't play on anything less than a PC and the RP5 is only 200 bucks. You really can't beat the performance/price ratio the RP5 brings to the table.
@@bobrobin5510 processing-wise, yes. But it's not so significant. Most of the stuff you can't play on an RP5 isn't stuff you'd play on an Android handheld. Like what are you missing? PS3? XBOX? Both the RP5 and Odin 2 play comfortably up to the switch. Anything beyond that isn't performing that well on either.
I bite the bullet and get the Odin2Pro just a day before the announcement of the Portal and since that day I was feeling like I'm messing out something, now I see I only missed the screen, so I'm really satisfied with the Odin2Pro since it is smaller and with the exact performance. Thank you, Russ, I watched the entire 33:26 minutes with joy.
holy crap, Apollo was the solution I was looking for for a WHILE, for virtual adapter streaming. Good video as a whole too, but I was looking for something like Apollo for years
...emulation has been quite the journey. I grew up in the 80's and was a teen in the 90's, and like many others, I ALWAYS enjoyed video games. I started with NES, and went from there. I remember getting out of college and diving into emulation in 1999/2000 for NES and SNES. A few years ago, I was interested in a handheld that could play up to PS2 and Gamecube, and that was what I wanted. Today, I want PS3 emulation, which Android doesn't offer, and about a year ago I got the windows based Asus Rog Ally Extreme, and I have what I wanted. I've enjoyed many handhelds throughout the years, and I have most because of this channel. Thanks for all you do!
Exactly my case, grew up in 80s, teenage in 90s and still enjoying gaming and retro gaming. I started with Spectrum though, first emulated GB and GBC in a HP Jornada PDA in 2001 and now I have an Odin 2 Portal and a GPD Win Max 2 2024 for Ps3 (10 inches is what my eyes need!)
I pre-ordered a black base in November, and it should be here this week. I am so excited to play through my ps2 library on a giant handheld screen. I'm in my 40's and my eyes aren't great, so this is perfect.
Word. I thought the rp4pro would be big enough but PS2 games need a bigger screen. I do want this but I'll wait n see what the rp6 looks like, in November.
im lovin my Odin 2 Max.. yes...the screen is definitely brilliant 1 inch more and no bezels is also great but why update? nope...I'll stick with my Odin 2 Max and wait for the Odin 3!
I feel like once these handhelds hit the 400 or above price threshold, at that point most enthusiasts will just start considering getting a Steam Deck or one of the various Windows PC handhelds. For instance, there were deep discounts during holiday sales which you could have picked up a ROG Ally or Legion Go for right around that 400-500 price point, and the amount of games you'd be able to play would also increase almost exponentially over the Odin. Handhelds like the Odin line have the most appeal at the sub-300 range.
You are right in terms of amount of titles, but if your goal is to play emulated games, this one offers much better battery life, at least. Personally I picked Rog Ally for 400 during end of year sales, because for me playing some old PC games is important and I want to avoid x86-on-ARM and windows emulation. However, the battery life is 2-3 times lower than what's promised here. On the go, it might be important. Now, I have Trimui Brick for that, but that's a totally different category 😂
Problem is that no other windows\linux handhelds have an OLED screen that is as good as these yet. The Zotac Zone is the closest and it's not as good. I ordered one of these to replace my steam deck OLED since I only use it for game streaming. The low resolution of the OLED screen does bother my eyes after a while.
Thank you for the updates, and glad to hear you mention Winlator. It would be awesome to see a RGC tutorial specifically on Winlator, especially on the Odin 2/similar chip family and the icing on the cake would be to get Halo 1 running. I mean if you're buying this for PC games at all you're buying the wrong device. steam deck for PC games is the obvious sensible choice. this is an emulation device

Thanks Russ @Retro Game Corps for the video!! Love to watch your content! I think the setup of Handheld Android Device and Apollo Game Streaming is something that will explode in the near future because that is just great. I have been doing it with my Android TV already and can really see the benefits of doing that on a Handheld Device as well
Nice review! I'll be sticking with my white Odin 2 Pro because I'm not really a fan of gaming devices with all glass fronts. If the Portal offered the same shell as the OG 2 I would have upgraded for that beautiful OLED display in a heartbeat. Hopefully the inevitable Odin 3 takes both of these models and puts them together in a way that will make it the perfect handheld for me.
I also had some ergonomics issues but after adjusting my grip and getting used to it, it’s a lot better. As much more conformable the OG was to hold the buttons were cramped in comparison. Joysticks were also not askew.
Already a proud >1 year owner of the Odin 2 Pro and its my most played handheld by far (along with my Miyoo Mini Plus) but this one is super tempting! That screen really does seem like something special
One issue with the front having that much glass, is trying to find a screen protector. The screen itself will be ok, but you have to worry about the glass around the controls
I couldn't resist, even though I already had an Odin 2, seeing the portal superimposed over the original, showing that its only a bit wider but not really that much taller and even thinner, which a larger and significant better screen, I couldn't help but order one. Should be delivered tomorrow. I'm selling my Odin 2 to my brother and he's very excited about it, and he's much less of an OLED snob like me lol
The Odin 2 Mini is such a beautiful handheld and a perfect size to throw in any pocket and play anything, wish was more available and had an OLED screen.
I have the Evo and I have had good experiences with AYN. I would have got the Portal but I wanted something to stream with full sized sticks. The Evo catches more hate than it deserves IMO. The thermal issues are unfortunate, and at the higher cost it should be trouble free ideally. But I think Aya’s response was basically on par with other companies and the device does seem mostly well thought out.
To get the carry case and grip as well, the Pro model is over $700 in my local currency (delivered). That is more than I could buy the Steam Deck for. My RP5 was roughly $350 delivered in local currency.
yeah, really curious to see what AYN does with it. will they make it look like another Odin 2 Portal? or will they go back to a 6-inch LCD screen and a slightly smaller form factor with a plastic front panel? what about the grips, etc? my Odin 2 is kinda small for my large hands, so I'd like larger grips, but not everyone is like me so....
I don’t know if I agree that it’s premium pricing. While it doesn’t have the finger print scanner and HDMI port like the OG did, it def feels more premium and no other device has an 800 nit HDR OLED screen and it’s the best performing android device. It’s an upgrade and if it’s too much the you can get a RP5.
Me: "Oh boy! The Retroid Pocket 5 looks perfect and exactly what I need! So glad I pre-ordered it!" Russ: "Grab a snack and drink and I'll make you regret not saving an extra $100 for this guy"
Absolutely love the shirt man! If you haven't already, you should watch "Omar and Cedric: If this ever gets weird" Its a documentary all about the history of ATDI, The Mars Volta and more.
It's crazy how often I recognize your shirts! Seems like a certain crowd really gravitated towards that niche sound with bands like At the Drive-In, Circa Survive, MewithoutYou, As Cities Burn, Dredg, Foxing, Anberlin, Minus the Bear, RX Bandits, etc.
I held out on buying this since they announced it cause I already have the Odin 2 and love it but I cracked with this video immediately went to order mine so excited to use it the screen looks amazing .My Odin 2 is gonna turn into my dock only device and I’ll use the portal in bed and the couch
I can't wait for the day when PC gaming switches over to a RISC architecture, like Arm, or maybe one day RISC-V. X86 is great for a desktop device with a dedicated power supply, but for anything mobile, RISC architectures just can't be beat. Yeah, they're not as powerful, but who gives a crap? Portability and convenience are more important to me than blow your mind, photo realistic graphics. Imagine a slimmer, lighter Steam Deck, running an Arm (or even better, RISC-V) version of SteamOS, that gets like 8 hours of battery. That's my dream.
You are now connected, Homegirl!.... thank you for making me want to spend more money on things i dont quite need. this looks wicked. the price is surprising. think of an oled phone with a snap dragon gen 2 chip for that price, doesnt exist.
I’m holding out and really excited to see the Snapdragon 8 Elite when they finally start using that in gaming handhelds. It’s such a massive step up and it will be interesting to see it in a gaming handhelds with extra cooling designed for it
I'm beyond satisfied with my Odin 2. If I didn't have it I would consider this for the screen. Honestly I play 90% of the time on my RPMini anyway though hahahaha.
That was my initial thought. The RP5 looks just as beautiful as this one for $100 cheaper (Purple looks even better IMO). Clearly this is more beef for your buck but for that why wouldn’t you just snag a used Legion or Steamdeck OLED and then use that extra money on a beautiful RP5🤔
One thing to think of for the price tiers is that a 512gb sd card is $50, and a 1tb sdcar (sandisk) is $100 so that extra $100 to the max is $50 for storage and $50 for the memory in crease, that is worth it to me not to have to deal with SD cards and them going into read only mode like my sandisk 1tb did.
Would be nice for the extra buttons, grip joysticks and d-pad to come in the Xbox layout in the full range of colours, so you can swap button around to have a black on white look etc.
The real question when ergonomics are fixed Russ will you prefer the Portal to the Odin 2 Pro? The upgraded screen might be enough for me to choose this over the 2 pro
I’ve just got back into gaming after a long break and I’ve been watching a lot of your videos to try to work out what handheld I’m going to eventually purchase. I’ll be very interested to see you do a heads up between a Lenovo with Steam nearer to release and a Steam Deck but in the meantime I enjoyed this as it was on my list but I think I’ll go with a Steam device for max versatility. Great reviews compared to the competition
Man that flip is gonna be the next one for me! I had the Anbernic SP and the D-pad made Crash Bandicoot and Spyro miserable. So excited to order mine. I hafta hold off on the purchase though since I just bought my Steamdeck OLED😢
Great video, Russ. I got a Rog Ally Z1 extreme for Christmas but really want one of these now. Just curious, what es de theme did you use in this video? The one which had all consoles on the main screen in a grid.
Shoutout I started at first not knowing anything about emulation but I got the Odin lite cause I wanted to see if I could do it and once you find all the programs and stuff it really easy now I upgraded to the retro pocket 5 waiting to see how that goes
Honestly I feel like you almost HAVE to compare this to the Ayaneo Pocket Evo, I'm excited for that comparison. I have it already and I will say, that also feels like a premium machine, handling everything I can throw at it, and the screen is beautiful. So I'm curious as to the screen comparisons between these two devices, plus any other comparisons and pros/cons you can find between the two. Off the bat from watching this, these seem VERY similar, I'm curious which one you would recommend of the two. Also yeah, EVO has some clacky buttons as well, one thing that's kind of annoying about it.
Evo is slightly better but there have been QC concerns. If you happened to not have any issues with QC on your model, then you should consider yourself lucky because you have the best hand held out there
26:44 - I notice on my EVO unit, if I press and hold the brightness option and move the slider between 10 - 30%, the green tint is very obvious during the hold. It's not that noticeable at 1-10% or as noted, not visible after 30%. Odd quirk but I'm not that bothered. Also for smudging, I own a Cintiq drawing glove, sometimes called the accidental touch glove, which covers my pinky and ring finger leaving my middle finger, index and thumb open. It's light material primarily designed for drawing on a computer screen. While this doesn't solve all smudging problems with the screen with these new glossy devices, it helps considerably with the back plastic. Not sure if this would be a solution for all, and perhaps feels like an iPhone 4 bumper case as a temporary work around, but it might be something to manufacturers to consider in the meantime while they work out other options with plastics.
Hey, love your ATDI tee! Odin systems are so great - just wish they were cheaper :') EDIT: Pretty surprised not to see price drops on the other Odin 2 models, honestly - the base Mini is currently more expensive than the Portal, which seems bonkers
Do you think the larger replacement joystick caps mentioned would fit onto a Retroid Pocket 5? My only issue with the RP5 is the small joysticks similar to what you've mentioned here. Thanks
What emulators get impacted by the 8gb RAM instead of 12gb ? Switch ? And how exactly is the performance imapcted, I can't find a single video comparing the two.
Switch should be fine. It's mostly for future proofing for things like Winlator. The 12/512Gb or extra 4GB of RAM and 384GB of internal storage seems like a good value for the $70.00 difference. 128 is a little tight if you want to play Android games and store high resolution texture packs. That being said the base model is fine if you know how to manage files and don't mind the minor inconvenience.
@@andyredfearn3002 Additional 70$ is an OK price for the 12gb, but the problem are import fees for me which are % based, so that 70$ will end up being 100+$ :( Still debating on getting this or waiting for Switch 2 and hoping it gets homebrew :D

Yeah, Odin 2 mini with an OLED screen would be an instant buy from me
Screw oled. Just play the flipping games ffs 😅
@@bobrobin5510 So people should simply stop wanting a nice screen?
@@bobrobin5510 you’ll understand when you own one
TheOdin mini 5” LCD screen really shoulda been the 5.5” OLED in the RP5.
Excited for this one
Now I’m wishing I ordered earlier 😢 I’ll definitely get one now
Oh look, a new Odin video, neat. Russ is wearing an At The Drive-In shirt, hell yeah. I knew my subscription was a great choice.
To get the carry case and grip as well, the Pro model is over $700 in my local currency (delivered). That is more than I could buy the Steam Deck for. My RP5 was roughly $350 delivered in local currency.
Cant wait for 8 elite handhelds to come out in the next years. Really felt like a noticeable jump in performance this year
yeah, really curious to see what AYN does with it. will they make it look like another Odin 2 Portal? or will they go back to a 6-inch LCD screen and a slightly smaller form factor with a plastic front panel? what about the grips, etc? my Odin 2 is kinda small for my large hands, so I'd like larger grips, but not everyone is like me so....
Such an innovative and unique design! Nothing like the Retroid Pocket 5 in any way.....
Me: "Oh boy! The Retroid Pocket 5 looks perfect and exactly what I need! So glad I pre-ordered it!"
Russ: "Grab a snack and drink and I'll make you regret not saving an extra $100 for this guy"
Russ rocking that At the Drive in Shirt! Hell yeah! \M/ This device looks really nice too. Lol
russ with the at the drive in shirt, good shit
Which front-end is Russ using on the Portal 2? Looks sleek
Absolutely love the shirt man! If you haven't already, you should watch "Omar and Cedric: If this ever gets weird" Its a documentary all about the history of ATDI, The Mars Volta and more.
Remember: Just because the Odin 2 Portal is out doesn't mean that your Odin 2 Base/Pro/Max/Mini is obsolete now.
Still love my Odin 2 Max.
I still prefer the size and ergonomics of the Odin 2.
I have the Mini but still bought this 😅
Definitely, was contemplating between this and the Odin 2, but I’ll stick with the
Odin 2 Pro.
It's crazy how they made this much better and at the same price of the original Odin 2.
Since my Odin 2 is my smallest handheld I’m happy with my OG Odin 2. It’s a beast and more portable then my switch and steam deck
I held out on buying this since they announced it cause I already have the Odin 2 and love it but I cracked with this video immediately went to order mine so excited to use it the screen looks amazing .My Odin 2 is gonna turn into my dock only device and I’ll use the portal in bed and the couch
How do you always make me want to buy a new handheld with your videos?
Looks great. Might be interested in getting one once it runs rocknix, batocera, or knulli
THAT AT THE DRIVE IN TSHIRT DUDE 🤘
I’m holding out and really excited to see the Snapdragon 8 Elite when they finally start using that in gaming handhelds. It’s such a massive step up and it will be interesting to see it in a gaming handhelds with extra cooling designed for it
The problem is what will take advantage of its power?
@@x100bullets AAA games on Android just like on iOS.
I'm beyond satisfied with my Odin 2.
If I didn't have it I would consider this for the screen.
Honestly I play 90% of the time on my RPMini anyway though hahahaha.
Super helpful video! 🍻🤘🏼🔥
You’re an amazing guy Russ
I WILL STAND BY MY RP5!!
Stand strong brother
rp5 gang stand up omfg whyyyyyyy RP5 supremacy noooooo
I love my RP5. This device looks awesome, but it's just far to large for me.
@cactusmanbwl1990 very true. The RP5 is the largest ill go for hand held
Quarter-circles and half-circles? What I want to know is whether it's hadouken-able and shoryuken-able!
Russ, I have been waiting for this one… about darn time man. Thanks again
Greetings from El paso Tx... 😎✌️
New president inauguration? Nope. It’s snack and drink time with Russ! #snackanddrink
Would be nice for the extra buttons, grip joysticks and d-pad to come in the Xbox layout in the full range of colours, so you can swap button around to have a black on white look etc.
Wow!
Would have got it but snapdragon elite chip is available now. Meaning these handhelds in a near future will be insane.
5:53 Interesting that you didn't get a TPU grip, but a regular dude like me got one yesterday. It definitely solves the problem you mentioned.
Could you please tell me the names of those joystick caps? Never mind, I see them at 9:05.
Can't wait for mine to be delivered this week!
Got mine in and love it
7:39 they made it flat so you have to buy the grip
Realtionship of command is one of my all time favorite albums!
That screen looks so nice. But I'm done with retro emulation after buying 5 devices and the 6th is on the way (miyoo flip) 🤣🤣
Man that flip is gonna be the next one for me! I had the Anbernic SP and the D-pad made Crash Bandicoot and Spyro miserable. So excited to order mine. I hafta hold off on the purchase though since I just bought my Steamdeck OLED😢
Liked that display. Hope more brands make more devices cheaper for moonlight streaming.
NIGHTFIIIIIIREEEEEEEE. Such a sick looking device.
Great video, Russ. I got a Rog Ally Z1 extreme for Christmas but really want one of these now.
Just curious, what es de theme did you use in this video? The one which had all consoles on the main screen in a grid.
It's all about that screen. If I'm gonna play games I want the largest and most premium screen.
What is the front end you're using? looks amazing!
OLED green tinting has been a known issue for years now. I'm unsure if any manufacturer has discovered a way to eliminate it yet.
Props for the At the Drive-In tee
Shoutout I started at first not knowing anything about emulation but I got the Odin lite cause I wanted to see if I could do it and once you find all the programs and stuff it really easy now I upgraded to the retro pocket 5 waiting to see how that goes
awesome at the drive-in shirt!
I like to watch these for educational purposes, as well as in the wait until the Steam Deck releases in my country.
Hey, love your ATDI tee! Odin systems are so great - just wish they were cheaper :')
EDIT: Pretty surprised not to see price drops on the other Odin 2 models, honestly - the base Mini is currently more expensive than the Portal, which seems bonkers
waiting on mine to deliver, but i think ill be waiting till feb as ordered arund xmas!!
@@JebesNikoveWhere are you importing to?
@ Serbia, add 32% to the price for taxes and add shipping and you get amazing prices for stuff like this I need to buy online :D
