This type of mistake is exactly why you really should stay away from these smaller chinese based companies. They can't even be bothered with basic QA to catch a simple typo like that.
I think it's weird to want a "handheld" but to want options ingrained that makes it less portable. I think a flatter design by default is the way to go and the options to personalize or make the device comfortable should be an option for those that want better ergonomics. At this price point, I think I would have preferred a flatter/slim device, and these grips to have come with the device included for the choice to use them if you wanted. I also like to add a case usually for the protection of the device and not necessarily for ergonomics. I do agree that the screen protector not protecting the full front of this all glass device doesn't make much sense.
I had a RP5 but ended up selling it due to it feeling a bit too small for my huge gamer hands. I would love to see a compare and contrast video of the Odin 2 portal vs the regular Odin 2. I do love OLED however it doesnt seem like a deal breaker to me when choosing the AYN Odin. Would also love to see a comparison video vs other current android handhelds on the market! Just a consideration it would help me a lot from a consumer perspective to know whats out there. I think im currently set on buying an AYN Odin 2 portal but im debating getting a steam deck OLED as well. So many great options but whats leaning me towards the AYN Odin is the portability and ease of access that comes with it. Keep up the great videos and content !! Your perspective is very helpful and informative when making these decisions :)
Never understood why people care about ABXY layout. Do you guys not have it memorized for everything? Like, its so easy to swap between consoles and never even need to look at the buttons, havent had to look since i was like 7
I just purchased the Mumba Nintendo Switch Case Plus Version from Amazon and it fits perfectly. It's a hard case similar to the Ayn case, but large enough to hold the grips.
If you pause at 14:14 that is a huge reason why i opted for the odin 2 portal pro instead of the steamdeck, same screen size but no compromises 😮❤ Other factors were: gamestreaming is the biggest usecase, battery life is wayy bigger and windows/switch emulation has gotten leaps better lately. Also i know its not "pocketable" but it would probably fit in most fanny packs or coat pockets im looking forward to finding the smallest fanny pack to fit the odin 2 alongside a water bottle, my phone, a portable battery. Ill be taking it on all my excursions 😊
I got the grip yesterday and it feels like a different device, improving considerably the ergonomics, even for my medium to small hands. I already ordered a generic hard case which should fit the device with the grip altogether for only 8$. As you mentioned, I am not seeing myself removing the grip since the moment I tried it. 😊
Step 1: make a great handheld but with some quirks that are annoying on the long term. Step 2: make accessories to alleviate those quirks and sell them separately. Step 3: Profit! GG Ayn...
I definitely like grips/thicker ergo device similar to Russ, but not everyone like the extra weight/size such a design brings, some prefer a thinner/slicker device.
I likely won’t make a video specific to the Portal. My previous Odin 2 guide will still work fine, although I recommend my RP5 guide because it’s more recent and has ESDE setup included and more recent Obtanium options.
The grip case transforms the Portal from a flat slab of a device to an ergonomic delight. With the grip fitted, the comfort rivals that of the Evo. On the one hand, it might have been better if the Portal had been designed with this form to begin with. On the other, however, users can choose between the naked slab format or the chunkier grip format. I, for one, will not be removing the grip from the device. This is the only way to play.
According to reviews and benchmark tests, the AYN Odin 2 typically scores around 3,672 to 3,900 on the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark, showcasing its strong graphical performance and ability to handle demanding games smoothly. According to available benchmarks, a Steam Deck OLED typically scores around 2900 - 3000 on a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test. I know benchmarks aren't everything, but the Steam Deck isn't the automatic answer in life and is frankly an underperformer compared to many of the modern options available now.
You are completely glossing over that the steam deck is x86. I ordered a portal, and am going to use it, but a steam deck is far more powerful. It can emulate more, and can play native pc games far more easily than the portal. It's just got wayyyyy less battery life and is larger.
Benchmarks have their place, but ultimately the steam deck can play far and away more games than any Odin product. So if someone is wanting breadth of options, Odin is basically stuck with streaming a lot of things. They are two different categories anyway.
That's not the point. Some people get the SteamDeck for its seamless gaming experience and OS without having to tinker and mess about with Windows or Android. Most of us know it can't compare to other devices in terms of performance.
Ordered a black (for myself) and an additional white Odin 2 portal max(for my son) from Indiegogo campaign. Black max model came with all the additional accessories extra sticks and buttons, screen protector, bag, case and TPU grip. The White max model didn’t include the TPU grip or the bag. Emailed Ayn about the error but with the holiday New Year their support team and entire company apparently is off. Hopefully the company will make good and not make me purchase the additional TPU grip because based off my experience using the black version it’s definitely a must to use the grip accessories for comfort.
I think at this point, unless a device is made to be pocketable, these companies should adopt the PS Portal design language and just prioritize prime ergos. Full size controller cut in half with screen in the middle.
I'm just waiting on your Aya Neo 3 review now. It's ticking all the boxes with the modular control scheme. I'm just hoping you don't find loads of problems with it and put me off buying it 😂
Unfortunately they haven't sent me one (yet), they currently have been waiting until after pre-orders finish before sending me review units, since my reviews tend to result in more cancellations than orders.
I did the same thing and regret it, basically everything russ said is bang on, it's fine without it but it's going to be a lot better with the grip, you should've gotten it in the first place
@@HearMeLearn yea I got the case and extra stick caps....just should've went for case too I guess. If it bothers me after it arrives I'll hit buy with no regrets haha.
You're kind of influential Russ... If it hadn't been for your impressions video of the CNC unit two months ago, and the resulting requests in the AYN Discord, the Portal probably would have shipped with the originally-planned form-fitting TPU shell. 😁
I think they would have made the Odin grip big to begin with if they didn’t already have the AYN dock existing and wanting to make sure all devices can universally fit into it. Seems like the best way to bridge that gap was to make a grip so we don’t have to lose the docking ability and convert to a steam dock type and spend even more money if we don’t have one already
I have the original Odin 2 in white and the paint deteriorated really fast and the culprit was the carrying case. I still enjoy playing on out but it really vothers me to see the paint like that. Hopefully the carrying case of the portal is better.
The switch from the tru shell to the new grip happened after I placed my order but I did order it once it came up on their site since I wanted to get some other stuff from them. Heard great stuff about it. On the flip side, I hear the screen protector is terrible. It doesn't full cover the screen and that leads it it peeling.
Hey Russ, you mention stick accessories for the Odin 2 will work here, but does it go the other way too? Can you confirm these new caps will work on the Odin 2?
I've had my Portal for a few days now and between some playing and mostly set up time, I haven't found the need for a case/grip yet. I'm curious to see if anyone on Etsy will have something that competes with this, or the AYN one will be the defacto one that everyone should go with
I don’t get why anyone would ruin the beauty of their devices with grips. I’ve never bought a grip, and I never will. I’d prefer to see replacement backplates. If someone made an ergonomic replacement backplate for an RP4, I’d buy that.
Whenever your playing it ,it looks very small but wen u show it on another angle it looks large so i would love if you show off the actual size more often
So i recently bought the screen protector, case and buttons with my portal it all came out to 450 this is actually gonna be my 1st android handheld system so im gonna be looking at all your “how to” videos cus ive only had an anbernic 350 up to this point so im hyped to learn all this thanks for all the updates 🫡
Good thing I bought the grip and buttons/sticks when I ordered mine. No update in over a week, so I'm assuming they're backordered. Hopefully I won't get a dud unit by chance. 🤞
Most of the grip is good, but the top flap of the grip DOES NOT fit the top the unit. I have to adjust the grip with my left hand to bring the grip flush over over the top of the device just to hit the power button. Maybe it's just my grip, but it is an issue.
This device is tangibly smaller and lighter than the Steam Deck, with crazy battery life -- you can stream for 20+ hours on a single charge. It's also got a 1080p OLED 120Hz display that looks fantastic. Streaming on the Steam Deck is certainly possible, and I wouldn't buy the Odin 2 Portal specifically for streaming (although many have), but it's a nice bonus for a handheld that can do lots of great emulation and Android gaming too.
any chance you could compare the size of the grip to the stock Odin 2? I had to 3D print (free at my school thankfully) grips to make it useable. I have large hands though.
I did not order a grip with my indiegogo order because I might be ok without it but once I get my portal I'll probably get one if I feel like I need it. I personally don't like adding extra weight and bulk to a device. It also does not fit in the case with the grip on.
I dropped my Odin 2 pro once. Not far, maybe under a foot from the floor. It knocked one of the triggers off which was easy enough to clip back on. The portal is really nice looking but I'm cool with my original odin 2. My luck I would bust the screen up eventually. I'm going to wait and see what the Odin 3 (or whatever it will be called) is going to be. Still might be a hard sell because the Odin 2 runs everything I want and the ergonomics don't seem as bad after watching reviews on the portal.
Unfortunately, my Portal experience has been somewhat negative. The screen protectors I (and many others) got don’t adhere correctly at the edges. My TPU grip doesn’t fit properly, with it not lining up and staying on top of the system. This also means the volume buttons and power buttons don’t line up correctly, so can’t be used with the grip on. Finally, the A button sometimes gets stuck when playing a game that requires pressing on the Y and X at the same time (such as running fast with Y, then jumping with A in Mario games). Such a bummer and hopefully Ayn will help out once they get back from vacation.
The case on their website looks pretty different. It has raised moulded areas where the buttons/sticks would be positioned. I wonder is that imagine an error.
Looking at Retro Tech Dad's teardown video. It looks like the actual fan intake is directly in the center, so I don't thing the little bit that the grip case covers actually obstructs anything.
Does there exist any replacement plastic bags that could have these handles built in in a rugged plastic? I just don’t like the feel of rubber personally also would be nice for it to be all in one
LV bags are heavily copied, and small cute bags with funny handles are not practical everyday bags, the kislux bag would be much more practical. Thanks again for the informative video.
I think this carrying case and the grip case heavily inspired from Skull&Co's design language, and they both maybe from the same manufacturer, which is a plus in my book. I like Skull&Co and i use their cases both on my Steam Deck and Rog Ally X
I need something like this for the retroid pocket 5. I've seen a lot of etsy 3d printed options but I'd prefer something softer rubber so I don't damage my device.
I wonder if this device can also run on 100Hz instead of 120. Some PAL machines like Commodore 64 and Amiga requires screen sync for smooth scrolling. 120 Hz will cause stutter on PAL games. Would be great if this device can run on 100 and 120 Hz. I also wonder if the odin 2 dock also works with the Odiin 2 portal.
Honestly, I think the way they did it is fine. No device will be perfect for everyone, and for some the original form is exactly what they want. This way it can work for both people who like the smaller form factor of no grip, and for people who like the bigger ergo. Had they made the device the same size as what is now the grip case, then yeah, you woulda been happy, but it would have left out people who like the smaller ergo. You can always add, but you can't subtract.
it's much better this way. both camps are happy, some folks prefer the slimmer design and those grips, & others prefer a chunkier style grip. it's the best of both worlds
You're probably not buying it in the first place anyway. This device (and the grip) is not targeted at those who don't want to pay more than 150-200 USD for a android device.
I honestly don't get why not more companies focus on making the device itself slim and pocketable, And instead earn extra money from accessories like attachable comfort grips, and different sized sticks.... Personally I would really like to buy the Anbernic Cube XX. Primarily because it seems so comfortable, but at the same time I would like to remove all the "comfort bulk" whenever I need to pack it down into small form factor... I mean, wouldn't it be great to be able to remove the sticks if you know you will only be playing 2D games?
They should make an xbox button layout button and those analog caps for the regular odin 2 as well. i would totally get them for $5. unlike the artisans stuff selling for $30 off etsy.
I'm considering buying a microSD card. I've tried looking for information but couldn't find a clear answer. Does anyone know the maximum speed and capacity that the Odin 2 Portal supports?
Super considerate of AYN to have that little mesh pocket above the screen for us to put our snacks and drinks in.

Finally, the A button sometimes gets stuck when playing a game that requires pressing on the Y and X at the same time (such as running fast with Y, then jumping with A in Mario games). Such a bummer and hopefully Ayn will help out once they get back from vacation.
Question Russ, does the Pocket Evo fit in the SFbags case?? the switch OLED with skull & Co case?
Yes, it does fit in the same case just fine, and yes the Skull & Co version.
The replacement sticks work on the pocket 5 and feel great as well
AYN should release a similar Grip Case for their Retroid Pocket 5. 😉
Can you do one with the Ayaneo Pocket S ergonomic case?
The case on their website looks pretty different. It has raised moulded areas where the buttons/sticks would be positioned. I wonder is that imagine an error.
Thumbs up for the Operation Ivy shirt.
Does it fit into the carry case when the grip is on it? 🤔
Nevermind you answered my question, you the man
the box said odin protal case wonder if that names gonna make it to market
Hey Russ what are your thoughts on how much of the intake vents it covers up?
Looking at Retro Tech Dad's teardown video. It looks like the actual fan intake is directly in the center, so I don't thing the little bit that the grip case covers actually obstructs anything.
@@KatDoomsong thank you!
The basically identical case for the RP5 does fit the basically identical TPU grip and device.
I have an idea, make the case have a wireless charging pad and a usb c plug inside. All you need is a qi pad and your device stays charged.
That zipper in the inside pocket of the case is definitely not in the best position in terms of avoiding scuffs and scratches to the device.
I think this carrying case and the grip case heavily inspired from Skull&Co's design language, and they both maybe from the same manufacturer, which is a plus in my book. I like Skull&Co and i use their cases both on my Steam Deck and Rog Ally X
Been sooo tempted by the Portal but I've decided I'm waiting for an Odin 3 to upgrade. RP5 wasn't enough of an upgrade over the RP4P for me personally
You should hold out for the Odin 7.
Personally the Odin 11 is where I’ll buy in
@olioctane
I heard the Odin 11 will be able to emulated the PS6.
@ damn boi's I think I'll wait for the Odin 34 in that case :D
I need something like this for the retroid pocket 5. I've seen a lot of etsy 3d printed options but I'd prefer something softer rubber so I don't damage my device.
I wonder if this device can also run on 100Hz instead of 120. Some PAL machines like Commodore 64 and Amiga requires screen sync for smooth scrolling. 120 Hz will cause stutter on PAL games. Would be great if this device can run on 100 and 120 Hz. I also wonder if the odin 2 dock also works with the Odiin 2 portal.
so now with the improved ergo, which is more comfortable to play: portal or deck?
obviously steam deck, that's basically like holding an xbox controller
Full package...
A-O2 PortaL+ Accessories+ Hard Shell Case
🤓😎
3:00 I would rather have a plastic screen protector for the whole glas front. Then they could fix the 'problem' with the palm prints of the thumb
Does it fit in the dock with the grip on?
Cant wait for cheaper devices becoming more powerful so that Russ can test REMAKE INTEGRADE and pronounce it like Apei Escapei.
Challenge accepted
Yay! I can pay more to fix a problem that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place!
When is more options bad.
You're probably not buying it in the first place anyway.
This device (and the grip) is not targeted at those who don't want to pay more than 150-200 USD for a android device.
what is the name of that es-de theme?
Only Russ can make a 15 min review about some grip 😂
That's my specialty :)
Weird to make a super thin console with a fat chunky case. Would love something like one of the thin tomtoc cases.
I love the tomtoc cases!
They originally had a thin case but they changed it to this fat one
@@marcusborderlands6177 really? That's a shame. I'm not a fan of having a zipper over the glass screen either.
I feel the same way
Odin 2 Protal
They should make an xbox button layout button and those analog caps for the regular odin 2 as well. i would totally get them for $5. unlike the artisans stuff selling for $30 off etsy.
The joystick caps fit on odin 2 ?
Thank you
2:46 what theme is that?
I'm considering buying a microSD card. I've tried looking for information but couldn't find a clear answer. Does anyone know the maximum speed and capacity that the Odin 2 Portal supports?
