Manny. Love your vids, man. I need help, tho. I was shooting my wife with a strobe, shoot thru umbrella and an a7III. When I start focusing, she’s bright but them once it locks focus, the screen goes really dark. I’m not doing one thing but I don’t know what the heck it is. I feel like it’s something in my settings.
The internet is reading my mind! I told my wife just this morning that since I've saved up some monies, I wanted to invest into some lighting gear but purposely wanted to stay within a budget... then this vid is the first thing I see when I open my RUclips. Thanks, Manny!
I remember the first time I shot with flash, it was like the planets aligned. I had no idea what I was doing but I was like, "woah, this is a game changer". It seriously doesn't need to be some $1,000 studio strobe to get pro results.
build quality, modifiers available, color accuracy and consistency. This video is good for beginners and hobbyist but if you're trying to be pro and land big clients investing in industry standard equipment that lasts for a while is a must
This was honestly so helpful, it such a time efficient manner. I used to always use natural lighting and was hesitant, still kinda am, to learn something outside my comfort zone. Videos like this are exactly why I follow Manny. Will be buying this gear soon to use for myself in the future. THANK YOU
Dope. The progression of your career. You two are awesome together. Keep going. Really good video by the way. This is for about 85% of us. Besides we are all from the Chi so extra big ups. 💪🏾🤣🤣
Really enjoy your videos. As someone who got into photography at a later age, I have learned a great deal from your videos. I appreciate very much your honest gear reviews and the enlightening tutorials you produce. Thanks so much.
Thanks for featuring an ACTUAL budget set up! I have a second-hand Yongnuo manual flash, wireless trigger and cheap umbrella. Easily less than $60 and it makes my photos look like they used hundreds of dollars worth of gear.
This is what I have been waiting for! Some content for aps-c users and perfect timing as well. Been looking at improving my flash photography for portraits and this will greatly help. Keep it up man and I am looking forward to more content for aps-c users!
great tips, thanks for sharing 👍 keep things simple as long as you can, that`s what I like most - a speedlite, a translucent umbrella, if possible set the light angle of the speedlite to wide angle to avoid a hotspot in the middle and cover the back of this set-up with a light-proof black cloth to simulate a softbox and to suppress light scattering as good as possible, this might help sometimes to be more effective even when using a cheap umbrella - be creative so use different flash and model positions and distances from the background, change the background color, so use a light grey background and a hidden second speedlite with different color gels only for the background, so you can get any color you like, otherwise it will be boring in the long run - there`s basically no right or wrong, there`s only the photographer's own preferences - the equipment doesn`t always have to be new, that saves money not only if you`re on a budget and you can't see it in the photos 😉
Thanks for this video brother. I’m new to flash photography just started my photography business 1 year and a half ago and I’m just now going to step into using flash and this video helped! I’m purchasing everything you mentioned now.
Love this channel. I keep learning which is why I keep coming back. How about a short video on setting your speedlight and a bit more on the controls to go along with this video.
I think it's nice of you to dial it back down to gear basics, it helps us(those without the high end gear) to see images like these can be done with minimal kit. Thanks again for all you do.
Hello, i really appreciate your work , i would really like you to guide me on the equipments i can use or mount in my camera in oder to come up with such good work as yours,, i have EOS 200DII camera, canon
Amazing channel. I don't understand why I'm just finding it now but I'm glad RUclips finally suggested your channel to me. Intentional and simple explanation of information that answers beginner and amateur photographers like myself. Keep up the exceptional work.
He's not wrong though. Compared to a professional camera that fashion photographers use, the a6500 is *relatively* cheap. Especially if you get the body used. Tamron lenses for Sony are affordable too.
Manny, Thank you for creating this video with clear and concise information! This was an extremely helpful video and should prove to be useful for many more in the future.
I don’t know why I’m so attracted to your channel... I don’t even have a camera :( Yet I come here every video! I’m so glad you make videos and once I do get my camera I will love these even more!! Keep up the great work with your channel, I truly appreciate it!! 👍😄
You can get some awesome results with really cheap cameras! And i mean REALLY cheap. Like $50 cheap. Check used Olympus E-PL1(around $50) and Yi 42.5mm lens for it, you can get it from aliexpress for around $50 too! It will give you some really awesome results! You will have a lot of fun with it! Also if you'll want to get rid of it you won't lose any money since it will not get any cheaper anymore ;)
I love my TT685's. Get the TT685c of you have Canon. If you have 2 you can use one as the wireless trigger and even disable its flash (no light, trigger only) to save money. Put the trigger money into a 2nd flash is an option. Love love love these TT685s.
Thanks for the video, I myself have a cheap camera and a cheap flash, so this really helps on my work, love you're content and thanks for inspiring✌️ greetings from Mexico
Rollei Lumen has several similar products available for those brothers on a budget. I got two LED sticks for 280€ which should equal around the same in USD right now. And they are big rods.
Hi Manny, thanks a lot this video cleared out many questions i had about lighting . Can you share the link for the backdrop ? i want a long backdrop like yours. Thanks again
Anyone looking for a companion to the a6XXX series, the Altura AP-305s is a great deal and smaller than most flashes. Has HSS, TTL, and also comes with a transmitter. Has worked great for me thus far!
Thanks for this. I've been experimenting with a cheap flashgun for a while and have been pleased with the results. I'm interested I'm trying a two light setup with a couple of different colours so this looks like a cheap and effective way to try that out.
Manny first of all I love all the videos. They have helped me a great deal. My question is simple; if you could only choose 1, would you choose a softbox or umbrella? Thanks in advance
the settings depend on the enviro of course. i think this would have been a better tutorial if you talked more about distance of umbrella from the model and distance of flash from umbrella.
don't forget you can use a reflector on the opposite side to bounce the flash - giving a "second" light source to fill in the shadows. Although he prefers the extremely low iso of 100 - bumping it up to 400 or even 800 will probably wont lead to much of a noticeable loss of quality with modern cameras.
Congratulations on the milestone 500k subscribers. Which tripod and ball head are you using? Can you also tell us about your light stand set up please? Most tutorials tend to leave out minor details (even in the descriptions) beginners really need. 😔
Do you need to have the umbrella for those photos to come out like that? Will come out professional by using Flash Diffuser Light Softbox with the canon ?
I hope everyone is having a productive Monday so far. Also Thanks for 500k! Hope you love these tutorials and if you have any request, lmk 🙏
What’s the difference between this flash and the godox ad 200 ? Thanks 😊
Manny. Love your vids, man. I need help, tho. I was shooting my wife with a strobe, shoot thru umbrella and an a7III. You can add a translation in Arabic
@@Lamision316 the Godox is pushed online by an army of Godox fanboys, many whom are probably employees of Godox. That’s the difference.
Where’s the canon r5 setup though this all Sony stuff
Thank you for FINALLY thinking about us everyday normal portrait photographers who can’t have a $20,000 setup.
I’ve literally searched RUclips for so long just to find something like this
Right! Lol
Been watching this channel for years and I think he does a fair amount of cheap gear BTS videos

I just got my first flash yesterday. Whoa!!!!
@Peter Alexander no. Just no. Flashes don’t break that easily.
Same 😭😭 it wasn’t just the flash it was the umbrella, the soft box and the mount flash holder I was like Woooow!!!!
Umbrellas are the most underrated modifier out there. I love a good white shoot thru umbrella
Hello
Bless you and you’re family as well as your craft... been following your channel, for a while now

I love the Lume panels. I use them constantly with car photo shoots. Lay it in the front seat to get some light and added depth easy.
I’ve been watching your videos from the time I din’t even own a camera, and now I’m a Sony shooter because of you! Keep inspiring 💯
Hello
I like how you explain in full detail your photography process, gear, and how you’re using it.

Hello
4:22 If it only lets you shoot at 1/160th, can you even use this camera with a bigger strobe is bright daylight? Or should I upgrade to full frame?
These are beautiful pictures only using 1 light and maybe a bounce. Thank you for such a simple set up
Grate job man, I like the way you made the process seem manageable
Hey im new here great video. What is that big circle ⭕️ metal ring on back of umbrella? Do i need that for soft box or it comes with
I've just watched 2 of your videos. Outstandingly helpful. Add yourself another subscriber.
Congratulations you've exceeded 500k subscribers already
I want a full picture of the one softbox
I love my TT685's. Get the TT685c of you have Canon. If you have 2 you can use one as the wireless trigger and even disable its flash (no light, trigger only) to save money. Put the trigger money into a 2nd flash is an option. Love love love these TT685s.
Plus if you have a camera that can use the pop-up flash as a commander, you can use the Canon optical system to get both flashes off camera.
Thanks a bunch Manny! This is the exact video I have been looking for. Short, informative and too the point. Can't wait to put these into practice!
