    People often lament what is it in buying an old car and driving it around when newer cars are better.
    This video is the perfect answer to that question because we add Petrolheads love and adore or cars and they become a part of our lives that we enjoy because that's what these cars are about, great story!

      In no way, shape, or form are newer cars better. The manual shifter will always be the ultamate driving experience. The interaction between the car and driver is so much more intimate.

    I owned a 308GTS QV for 22 years and drove 128,000 miles in it without one single breakdown or problem. I then owned a 550 GTB for 12 years and drove 112,000 miles in that without a single problem. Having warmed them up carefully thrashed them hard just like a superbike. Ferraris are by far the most reliable cars I have ever owned. The problem is the owners not the cars.

    It's such a treat to hear someone talk about something they love and have enjoyed with such passion....especially when that something is a car as beautiful as the 308. Do more of this; it shows just how much appreciation some folks still have for older cars.

    I drove a new 308 back in the early 80's. The owner paid about $62k for it. At that time, cell phone service was just starting up in Florida but the owner wanted a radio-telephone installed in the car. I worked for the company which was contracted to install the phone so I got to pick up the car at the dealership and drive it several miles to the shop. This type of phone had a large transmitter/receiver and it was difficult to find a place in the car to install it without drilling through the body. In the first installation, it was placed behind the passenger seat but when the owner found that it restricted movement of the seat back, he wanted to have it installed in the trunk. Once more, I got to pick up the car and drive it to the shop. I only took the car up to 115 for a short time while on the interstate. It took a few minutes to get comfortable with the gated shifter but It was almost impossible to dog that car, you could be doing 35 mph in 3rd, step on the gas and without any hesitation it would take off. I told people that the car was so responsive you had to watch what you were thinking! After slowing down from 115, I started to taste something, I looked at my mouth in the rear view mirror and saw blood! I was so excited that I actually bit my tongue! Its been my only experience driving a Ferrari.

    My first 308 GTB was a 79 ralley car owned by the dealer Bob Sharp of Danbary CT,and I had it for 16 years!It was the love of my life and she took me to 197 mph on the McKnight run and my mother thought I was mad! Now may I get you to have a movie night with your Paddle shiftng kids,the movies "GRAND PRIX and LE MANS" that should really convince them about manual is an art!I also now have a 1982 GTSi I just drove it from Scottsdale Az to Saint Petersburg Fl and another 1979 GTB rally car!

    We have had our '85 Euro QV for three years now and just love it! We just uploaded a long review or ours as well. The 308 is the sweet spot on the classic Ferrari line I think. Still has the interesting interior and all the great buttons and knobs, but is reliable and a car you can do most of the maintenance yourself. It has ample power, drives well and has amazing looks! Instantly recognizable as a Ferrari. Great sound too! Thanks for uploading this story. Franny

    My father had exactly the same car when I was growing up. Black 308GTSi. Hideously unreliable car. Water pump never worked no matter how many times we took it in, meaning it was rare that we took it out, but when we did it was amazing. I really wish we still had it, sold it during the recession for around $45,000. We also had a DeLorean DMC12 at the same time, thinking back, we had a ton of 80's cars around when I was in elementary school.

    It is funny, but I was up to 7 cars at the same time and found with a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and a 1987 Porsche 944 S1 that even swapping cars every day it was hard to drive the old stuff as often as needed to keep them in top condition. Driving it is the most important thing.

    I'm not buying the argument that modern cars have to be automatics b/c of the horsepower. It's just an excuse. The Porsche 917 was ~1,000 hp and a manual, no?

    • @VINwiki
      @VINwiki  7 лет назад +4

      +jeffer168 plenty of powerful cars are sticks but they don't tend to work well on the road and the transmissions quickly become the performance limiting factor.

    • @jeffer168
      @jeffer168 7 лет назад +3

      This is why I think the dealers and manufacturers should be selling the experience rather than selling the numbers (0-60 mph, hp, etc.). Before you have a chance to actually DRIVE great driver's cars, you tend to pay too much attention to the numbers, because that is the information that you have at the time. Then as you gain driving experience you realize more and more that the numbers are just a fraction of what makes up the total experience. Unless you are racing, a few ticks of the clock are meaningless so forget the numbers and buy the experience.

    • @danbullock1686
      @danbullock1686 6 лет назад

      BS. Every time a car claims to be faster in automatic form a real driver debunks it. Even if it was, you have now lost a degree of controlling the drivetrain.

    As a European so ofcourse not knowing much about the US classic car market i have to wonder,is it considered "tampering" switching to euro spec bumpers on older Ferraris,Countach,etc? Does it lower the value or increase it or nothing at all? Because my GOD they are hideous. The worst i`ve seen is the Countach and the Maserati Khamsin but they aren`t doing the 308 any favors either...

      Manuals are very satisfying and engaging, but dual clutch autos can go so much faster, and speed is addicting too. They're very different experiences but both worth having. Although manuals are great, don't forget that dual clutches can also be fun.

    • @EdBolian
      @EdBolian 7 лет назад +2

      Exactly. It has been the easiest way for manufacturers to improve performance in the last 10-15 years so they have really caught on. Now the lightweight internals and transmission components are making it impossible to even offer a stick as an option.

      not an expert on this, but maybe for now / if you don't want to change you could make it less loud. The videos are pretty quiet so I have my volume up, then the superloud intro / closer come on and I have to decrease. I think it's important you start the videos with the hook like that and the logo / branding is a good Segway, but the music is too "obnoxious" however it does sound like music in car games so that mental association in probably good too.
