I remember watching news about this and legit thought that the pilot is a dumbf*ck...
He thought that the warning system is faulty because there is no way they're too close to the ground. He's a foreign pilot unfamiliar with the terrain, and still think he's smarter than the warning system...

The crash was at salak mountain cause i from Indonesia
The final report was released 18 December 2012. Crash investigators determined that the plane's terrain warning system had been functioning correctly and had warned the pilots about the impending collision with the mountain. The pilots, however, turned the system off, believing that it was malfunctioning, even though their view of the surrounding area was obstructed by thick cloud cover.Furthermore, the pilots were distracted by conversation on the flight deck unrelated to flying the plane, which contributed to their failure to notice that the plane was in danger. The investigation also found that the pilots were unaware of the terrain in the area because they lacked the proper charts for the area. A contributing factor was the lack of a Minimum Safe Altitude Warning System at the airport and the air traffic controller being too overworked to notice the impending crash
What is sad is that Russia tried to take control of the investigation likely with the intention of controlling the narrative (aka engaging in a coverup to protect the manufacturer's future sales) if the accident was anything other than pilot error. After all if there was something potentially lethally wrong with the plane existing orders would be cancelled/suspended and future sales would quickly dry up. The Indonesian gov't declined their "offer", allowing them only a support role.

@@bulletnotloaded3586 basically the pilots ignored the terrain warning system as they thought it was a fault but it was actually correct and the pilots were distracted by a conversation not related to flying the plane so they didn't see the obstacle till impact

I actually went on a giant binge a few years ago and I didn't get more scared of flying. If anything this surprisingly made me more calm knowing all this information

I was watching the movie Flight on my laptop during my flight to Saigon. The flight attendant wasn't too happy about it but the kid sitting next to me was glued to the screen.

Based on the result of the National Transportation Safety Committee investigation's, the pilots ignored the warning system because they were too busy promoting the Superjet 100 aircraft to potential buyers, who were in the cockpit. The results of the investigation showed the plane system was normal and fine, just the early warning from the plane was ignored by the pilot, thus it was purely human error.

I've also heard the plane supposedly went through Krakatoa Route, which means the open sea where it's bright and you can see clearly. But instead, it went through Labuhan Ratu Route which was filled with dark clouds and mountains. Salak Mountain itself was already infamous before this. Many planes and choppers crashed in this site, even hikers and military recruits training there had their own horrible stories about that place. It's Ill reputed. Taking that route instead of the sea route for an introduction flight is basically asking to have a plane crash.
And this is supposed to be a test flight to promote the jet. Why dont the pilot took less risky route in order to avoid accident that can hurt the plane reputation

The accident happened in a demo flight during an aviation expo in indonesia, it costed death of some high rank officials of the big airlines.

The sukhoi company should've appointed local pilot to accompany the native russian pilot as co-pilot to prevent this kind of accident, or are there language barrier? Nobody knew

The plane crashed into mountain terrain. The plane was wrongly registered in the navigation, it was registered as fighter jet. But pilots hardly reacted ..it is thought more could have been done
I'm guessing the reason was they thought that the input to the navigation system to take them back to the airport had worked, it was poor visibility and they couldn't see what was going on outside, and maybe they had had false alarms from the terrain system before. So they turned it off.
They thought that the terrain they were going over wasn't in the TAWS database, that's why they thought it was wrong
Even if they've had false alarms they shouldn't have ignored it

Well, I watched the complete documentary and the reason is that the mountain was not included in the map and briefing for that demonstration flight and the pilot who was eager to make an impression thought the warning must have been an error and headed straight to the mountain and crashed. Who to blame? Mountain not included on the map.

The most important thing is what behind the pilot's ignorance. I think the cockpit recorder should be transparently opened.

I prefer the logic & evidence based analysis. But believe or not, mount salak is one of the most mythical sacred mountain, the place where last hindu king dissapeared (moksa), after invasion from sultanate. This is interesting, but dont get me wrong, i feel sorry for the victims.

I think the pilot disable it because they remember there's no mountain near the city. They think its a faulty, in fact it's human error. One thing i don't know is why the pilot not heading to 333°

the pilot wants show the aircraft capability and agility to do manoeuver in front of media staffs and guests. That way he had decided to turn off aircraft system coalition system, because the system made automatically adjustment during flight.
