I swear people don't understand that there aren't shortcuts to most things. The best way to learn how to change chords, as shown in the video, is to pick a couple of chords and change between them as fast as you can cleanly, then pick up the speed.
The problem isn't that people want a shortcut, the problem is that people are doing this and it isn't working, and they think they must be doing something wrong.

I'm also a writer-wannabe that is why I'm writing this ebook guide on guitar for beginners.
How ironic that I found the guy who seems to get my pain of wasting time looking for the right videos rather than practising by looking for the right videos. Finally!
Dude, as a professional teacher, I have to congratulate you on your videos and journey of developing your learning road map. I've spent s day or so looking around and curricula is all over the place... Like you said too much info available. This mindset and approach will surely help guitar newbies and probably get your content known/spread. If I may, don't forget to always explain what something is, what it's for, and how to use/apply it. Got yourself a sub. Thank you and best of luck w/ the channel.
I can change chords plenty fast. As long as you don't care about them sounding like actual chords or real music. If you like "thump"-y strings and buzzy notes, I'm your guy! How fast do you want 'em? I can do it as fast as you want! 😂
You came in at just the right time for me. I got a really good handle of the basics, found your video (you know the one) and knew you could really help me develop my guitar skills. This exercise is just out of my comfort zone right now, and you explained it brilliantly. Thank you, truly!
@@arturogotti3790 pretty good. I'm not amazing and I don't think I ever will be, but I'm enjoying it, which is really important to me. I'm learning by myself and taking baby steps, but as of right now I'm mostly focusing on rhythm and staying on time because that's an area I'm lacking in
Kev, I’m loving your methodology here. I’m 64. I messed with the guitar in my teen years. Then life happened, marriage, kids, job. And I set it down. 3 years ago I picked up a ukulele. I have 3 now. I enjoy it. Now I have a guitar. One week as of this post. And I’m a fan of your teaching. I practice every day. The internet is great for this stuff. I’m starting with 20th Century Man by The Kinks. Because it has everything I need. Hammer on’s, slurs and interesting chord changes. Love the albums on your wall. My room is just like it. But more albums.😂 ima keep watching your site!

Thank you so much for your videos. I'm at the beginning of my journey and I love how clear, concise and helpful your advice is. Please keep making such helpful videos. Love it
I just can't believe how good the explanations are for playing guitar. And from the comments I believe that I'm not the only one who thinks that. You're doing just fantastic, please don't stop making great videos like this🎉❤
Wow!! You are a fantastic teacher. There are so many guitar videos that spend a minute or two explaining something... then the teacher just starts playing stuff and I'm like lost for the rest of the video. Your videos are amazing because they are logical, clear and JUST MAKE SENSE!
Im 17yrs old and I started playing guitar December 25th of 2022, inspired by my favorite rock bands, metal guitarist, and r&b players. I knew nothing about the guitar, and it felt so foreign to me as i picked up daily, my confidence wavered and i wanted to give up, but with a burning passion for the path to be musically sound i practiced what I could everyday. And to have been only playing for 7 months I've been given alot of recognition. Recently I've felt I'm hitting a plateau, but you have inspired me beyond the edge of the cliff we call danger, and to see that it is a dive of new hope. Thank you truly and you deserve even more love 🤘
Thanks for making these amazing guitar videos! I'm a pianist who's been playing for 8 years and I've been learning guitar for a few but im nowhere near my skill level on piano. These vids are really helpful!
I really like your style, and your humor. I started learning about 30 years ago, from a book in those days. Got so I could strum a bit and then got side tracked. It had been more than 25 years since I touched a guitar but then I retired. I was surprised when I picked it up again how quickly the open chords came back, and I've worked out barr chords, which I didn't have when I stopped. I have virtually no music theory beyond the 12 notes and I would like a bit of that so I could maybe figure out how to add and embellish a little sometimes with walk ups or downs and turnarounds. I also really need to work on rhythm as I seem to be stuck when it comes to strumming patterns. My plan is to start from scratch watching everyone of your videos to fill in some of the many gaps in what I know. I'm not looking to become a professional guitar player or to start gigging. At my age that would be too funny. However, I would someday like to say I've made it through the beginner stage. In the meantime, I'll be watching you. Congratulations on the 1000 subs!!! They have been well earned.
My friend's dad sold his Edward Jones office and gigs three nights a week right now lol. He's making dozens of dollars every night and smiling the whole time. Don't forget that us seasoned citizens also bring other advantages to the gig. We show up on time, have reliable transportation, less mama drama, and if we do drugs its just grass and if you aren't a little narc about it you can try our volcano vaporizer.
Nah, don't go as fast as you can, you'll sound like shit. Muscle memory is important. It's best to start out by playing it slow over and over again until you have memorized and mastered it, then you'll be able to play faster.
This is awesome, I'm working on this now while learning my first song. It is helping. A video topic which I don't think is covered well is when I'm reading chords (say on Ultimate Guitar and say on the song If I Get High - Nothing But Thieves) I can play the individual chords and I now get the strumming pattern but what's the logic behind 'when' to change chords. I've heard it's only supposed to be after a full measure based on the strumming sequence. Just an idea because it's not immediately clear to me, congratulations on the success of your channel, best wishes!

I struggle to set up my chords, I put one finger down at a time. Is that something that goes away the faster I get or is that something u have to sit down and train away?
This is the most genuinely enjoyable lessons I've ever had. Love the humor you throw in to keep it light and obviously others enjoy it to because you're nearing 14k a month after 1k. Congrats keep it up
I have been self teaching myself since May and kind of watching videos here and there (still cant play for crap), struggled with this in particular and seen a few ok videos on this subject but this might be the best idea I've seen yet. I also love how he teaches and explains things. I haven't really watched peoples lesson videos much but I might start now. +1 subscriber for sure and thanks for helping all of us learn.
I just saw how you make your G chord. Why not make your G chord using the same shape as the C chord? It makes changing chords much easier and it makes playing the G7 really simple.
Sure, thanks for watching and asking! It's so you have time to move your hand. If the chord kept ringing out then your hand would be occupied with holding the chord. The point of this exercise is to give your hand time to change the chord without feeling like you have to do it in a fraction of a second between beats. Hope this helps!
I started following you last week, when you had 79. By the weekend it was 1000. This morning, and your new video popped up, you’re at 4000. This channel is going to boil up simply because the quality is so good, the editing and writing are superb. And the style - you’re approachable, convey it well and you know your shit. Even for a long time player like me, you’re never too old to relearn stuff. You never get good enough. You always learn, and this is a great channel. You’re going to have a lot of success. Best of luck.
Just bought a new guitar after not playing in a while, I swear your channel popped up at the perfect time. Thanks for all the quality videos you’ve been putting out!!
I like that you give tips like the metronome and the tuner which I have already got r which I have I am left handed I have notv set up yet , Waiting for some bits I am old but been curious for some time retired and just want to learn a bit about the guitar.
Your channel's really awesome and those videos are helping a lot! Just a couple questions concerning this exercise, is it better to always do it with the same two chords, or should i try different ones every day (like going from E to E minor one day, then E minor to G the next one etc)? And would trying to do it with 3 or even 4 chords be useful or would that count as noise?
Hi Kevin, Iam very happy about the growth of your channel.I have a few doubts since iam a beginner: 1) Iam unable to see the fretboard when i am playing the guitar as it rests against my body. 2) I make wrong chord shapes and get tensed, so is there a way to practice them correctly 3) do i need to curl my fingers when playing Will be happy if u reply to this man......
Practice, practice more and more and more and even more more more, my friend. You learn a new trick in 30 seconds, but you need 30 days to practice in order to be good at that trick
@@gj8078 My exprience: there are different methods to practice the same technique, some methods will not work for you, but some will, therefore you should learn from various channels, not just one or two. And you might need weeks or months to practice a trick or a technique, it seem impossible for you to control your hand/fingers in the first 2-4 days, but they will go much easier if you can overcome that
Very clear and simple! I think I've be staying too slow just so it sounds nice afraid of pushing faster tempos. Great tips and super helpful, hope you channel grows fast!
Love you man; I started playing the guitar two weeks ago and luckily caught your videos. Though I'm nowhere near decent, I'm enjoying the process a lot and your videos are really informative and motivating. Thanks a ton and you are really underrated. I hope you get the recognition that you clearly deserve for making your videos so BS-free and neat. Much Love♥.
I liked how you pretended you couldn't change chords that fast near the end so we wouldn't feel so bad! I'm gonna use this excercise to also learn new chords 😎 Thank you for the video, great material!!
This video has been extremely helpful, thanks! Just tried out this exercise and I was amazed at how effective it is, genuinely feels as if I progressed 2 months of guitar practice in 10 minutes.
Since you have given me such great advice I will return the favor. You are growing faaaaast right now. You will likely hit a plateau in the near future based on how the algorithm works for newere channels. Try not to let it get to you. You are making great stuff and people are eating it up. Just keep going. Early big numbers can derail a person badly. Just remember that it was always about the music and the babes not likes and subscribes.
Congratulations on getting so many quick subscribers you absolutely deserve it. I believe i found your channel 2 days ago and i saw the video “what to learn on guitar in order” and i cant thank you enough. It feels like every since that day i just started to progressively get better. Im currently practicing on changing chords fast. it was hard at first. I could only do 50bpm currently im at 100bpm and im just honestly so excited to see that it’s totally possible for me to get better if i just keep practicing. I cant thank you enough for making such great videos that are easy to follow while making them funny to watch at the same time.
Wonderwall is one of the best guitar songs in my opinion cause it’s simple, it’s fun to play, the words are easy to remember, and girls love it when you play them love songs.
Yo, Kev - thanks for the awesome vids - I like this one especially. I think you've hit the nail on the head with this, I reckon it'll help out a lot of people (including me) who are trying to learn how to change chords more quickly. Cheers!!!
I think this was the best video so far, like why didn't I think about it! Switching between two chords to practice is just how to start. It's like learning languages, starting small, practice, and repeat. Thank you for this amazing content ❤
Is there a downside to playing chords with different finger positions? For Example Em, with the third Finger on the A- string and the second on the D- string?
Not necessarily, but you should get used to being uncomfortable when trying to make chords. It will be uncomfortable right now, but learning the skill of making these strange alien shapes with your hand will pay off later. Also, there will be chord extensions/modifications that will be harder if you use an alternate fingering
Some of the best instructional content I've ever seen for guitar on youtube, your content is straightfoward, easy to understand and witty, looking forward to your next videos :)

this was and is extremely helpful. I'm attempting to learn Anything For You by Ludo and switching between the C major and G major chord has always been difficult for me. I'm gonna practice this exercise. Thanks a ton!
Have you observed any particular benefit to using a pick when practicing this chord change exercise? As a beginner, it doesn't seem like it would matter whether I use a pick or simply use my thumb, but I just thought it would be good to ask you because of your exceptional insightfulness. Thank you!

You explained what the exercise IS and ISN’T but never said WHY. Can I ask why it’s so critical to mute the strings and not let them ring out?
Sure, thanks for watching and asking! It's so you have time to move your hand. If the chord kept ringing out then your hand would be occupied with holding the chord. The point of this exercise is to give your hand time to change the chord without feeling like you have to do it in a fraction of a second between beats. Hope this helps!

1) Iam unable to see the fretboard when i am playing the guitar as it rests against my body.
2) I make wrong chord shapes and get tensed, so is there a way to practice them correctly
3) do i need to curl my fingers when playing
Will be happy if u reply to this man......
Practice, practice more and more and more and even more more more, my friend. You learn a new trick in 30 seconds, but you need 30 days to practice in order to be good at that trick
@@androidphone3934 Sure brother.
@@gj8078 My exprience: there are different methods to practice the same technique, some methods will not work for you, but some will, therefore you should learn from various channels, not just one or two. And you might need weeks or months to practice a trick or a technique, it seem impossible for you to control your hand/fingers in the first 2-4 days, but they will go much easier if you can overcome that
Now You got 20K+ bro that is amazing
Thank bro, all the nice comments (like yours) are really encouraging
Very clear and simple! I think I've be staying too slow just so it sounds nice afraid of pushing faster tempos. Great tips and super helpful, hope you channel grows fast!
The illustration of changing chords you’re not proficient at made me a lifelong fan! 🎸❤🎉
Hey man. I subscribed to your channel before you hit 1k subs. Glad to see it doubled within a few days. Cool content 👌🏼.
Much Love♥.
today, after more or less a month of practice, i finally managed to change chords quickly, im very happy and just wanted to share with you :)
You’re a godsend to guitar players
Excellent instruction! Just embarking on my second year learning this instrument (late in life) and this is what I needed to hear.
I was actually practicing chord changes just before this popped up, thank you!
0:05 how to impress girls with power farting
hmmmmmmm
Just when I need it most, thank youuu!
I liked how you pretended you couldn't change chords that fast near the end so we wouldn't feel so bad!
I'm gonna use this excercise to also learn new chords 😎 Thank you for the video, great material!!
Why's bro showing middle finger while playing g chord in the thumbnail 😂😂😂

This is it, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, This really helped me😄
You've got a new subscriber and I wana wish you Merry Christmas😄
This video has been extremely helpful, thanks! Just tried out this exercise and I was amazed at how effective it is, genuinely feels as if I progressed 2 months of guitar practice in 10 minutes.
Found your channel at 1.9k subs now you're on 2.5k! You're so professional and deserves waaaay more subs
Thanks for 1000 subs 11 days ago, and sitting on almost 7k as it stands. Blowing up!!
This video is very helpful! From one Kevin to another, thank you! I am delighted to be one of your subscribers :). Keep up the great work!
Thanks Kevin!
You have hummor and i like that.
I’m really starting to enjoy this channel.
I’ve been playing guitar for years and sucked, and I just learned that I wasnt ever practicing, thank you!
Yo, Kev - thanks for the awesome vids - I like this one especially. I think you've hit the nail on the head with this, I reckon it'll help out a lot of people (including me) who are trying to learn how to change chords more quickly. Cheers!!!
finally found a guide that's just straight forward! thankyou very much!
Enjoying the no nonsense/gimmicks/silver bullets approach, quality videos and nice edits.
The picture before you click on the video is the best way to flip someone off
Your videos are so high quality and funny. I hope your growth continues
I think this was the best video so far, like why didn't I think about it! Switching between two chords to practice is just how to start. It's like learning languages, starting small, practice, and repeat. Thank you for this amazing content ❤
When will you finish all levels ?you are great,my paid lessons are nothing compared to yours.you deserve more subs
Awesome content! Thank you from Brazil! 🙏
Thanks 💪💪
Yeah, I prefer playing along to a slowed down simple song just to break up the monotony
this man is out here giving actual good advice and he has less than 10k subs, my man you deserve at the very least a 100k
You are a great teacher.❤️
Influencers: "how much you lift bro?".
Kevin: 5:17
Influencers: "Oh shit. respect".
I still struggle like when i try to switch chords my fingers moves altogether :]
I actually my favorite channel of all time. Your road map lined up pretty much as soon as I started learning. Your channel has been too helpful
Wow that’s amazing to read. Thanks for the support. Seriously I’m really glad that you’re getting so much out the the videos
Some of the best instructional content I've ever seen for guitar on youtube, your content is straightfoward, easy to understand and witty, looking forward to your next videos :)
So does it help with switching to the chord in general or only from switching to the chord that you started from?
This is a great video and I’m trying your 6 level journey I’m at level 1 so this will definitely help
Thanks for the videos, direct and to the point , happy to see that when you uploaded it you were happy with a thousand sub, while writing this its a 12,2k well deserved
Thank you for the excellent video 😊
The Lord’s love + grace be with you
Hope you are all well and resting in Jesus saving love + grace 😊
Blessings friends 😊
this was and is extremely helpful.
Thank you!
Hi! I just want to say a big THANK YOU!🤟 And good luck with all your projects!
