  • American Airlines is currently the biggest carrier in the world! Operating over 900 aircraft, the Dallas-Fort Worth-based carrier also has the top spot for many other measures, including revenue, passengers flown, and passengers-kilometers flown. Despite struggling with financial issues due to the pandemic, the airline has managed to keep a large and diverse fleet while finding solutions to solve its problems. Let’s take a better look at this fleet, as well as what they've planned for the future.

It is slightly less nice however studies show passengers largely opt to use their phones/tablets over them. The weight and complexity added by the electronics did not justify their slight convenience. And really the device holders + power plugs make me not even miss them.

They retired the a330 and 767s way too early. It was a knee jerk reaction that is biting them now. With air travel returning, and the delays in the 787 deliveries, AA has to drop or postpone route expansions. Giving up its last flight to Australia is a pretty big blow. AA has almost completly given up everything west of Hawaii. SE Asia is out. They only have South Korea and Tokyo left. I personally think this is a massive mistake.

Due to where I live in Florida and where I usually go, I rarely fly American. Usually it’s Delta. At PBI, my nearest airport, Delta has the more convenient gates and AA means more of a trip to and from parking and some other facilities. But again it depends where I’m going. I don’t go across the continent often.

I think American is on the right track by modernizing and consolidating their fleet.
Eventually I do think the A220 would be a good replacement for their A319’s (the A319NEO less efficient as an overweight airframe), as many older ones come from America West and US Airways. For their 777 fleet, I would believe the 787-9 and A350-900 are better replacement as the 777X are larger, allowing American to stay with frequency over capacity.

    • @sking2173

As a paying passenger in coach, I’d say I hope that they go with the A350 instead of the 787-9 as a replacement for their 777’s, because they insist on doing their 787’s in 9-across. The 350 in 9-across is much nicer.

I don't really care for American's longhaul fleet; 3-3-3 abreast in economy is brutal if fhe plane is full. When possible, Delta and United's 767s are much better.

You’re talking about their 787 Crampliners ... Their 777’s are 3-4-3, which is also miserable.
When I fly internationally, I use carriers that operate 9-across 777’s, (e.g., Korean Air, Japan Airlines, select Cathay Pacific) or 8-across 787’s (Japan Airlines). Of course, if you must fly a US carrier, which some do, citing safety concerns, Delta flies A350’s which are nice in 9-across, and their 330’s are 2-4-2, which is also relatively spacious. Delta also still operates the 767, which utilized that 2-3-2, which is very nice.

@@sking2173 Crampliners, I will be calling them that from now on.
Yes, disgusting how on the 777 they figured they could squeeze another seat and go 10 abreast, and ran with it.
      I remember the 777 2-5-2 configuration, which was better than 3-3-3/ 3-4-3.

My favourite longhaul birds are the A330/A340s and 767s. I opt for those whenever possible. The A350 3-3-3 is also miserable.

    • @sking2173
      @sking2173 2 года назад +2

@@HplusG - I like the 2-4-2 on the 330/340’s, but the 350’s with 3-3-3 are much more accommodating than the 787 with the same, as the 350 has a wider cabin and can fit wider seats.
Japan Airlines fits some of their 777’s in 2-4-3, which sounds weird, but if you think about it, is more passenger-friendly than the 3-3-3. That would also work with the 350 ...
Edit: The 767 with 2-3-2 is THE BEST of all wide-body configurations.

I still don't like their livery. If they wanted an abstract take on the U.S. flag, they could have just refreshed the flag that US Airways had. That flight symbol they use is also bizarre compared to the eagle used previously. I admire their willingness to commit to something brand new, their new uniforms are divine, but for a brand like American I think they could have done better. It's very good that they have pared down their fleet types. I hope to see American retain its place at the top of the world's airlines. 🦅

Blended wing/fuselage aircraft made of NASA/Boeing synthetic materials (1/2 the weight) and next generation fuel efficient engines (-25% burn rate)are about to emerge. Airbus is finally near digging out of their A380 vanity project. What have they been working on since 787???
