This song he wrote for his friend and once roommate__singer of the band "Mother Love Bone"__Andy (Andrew) Wood who died by OD. Also, in this "Temple of the Dog" band are past members of Mother Love Bone (MLB) along with Andy; bass and rhythm guitar players - Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. Chris Cornell once said of Andy....that he believed Andy, if anyone, would be 'THE ONE' who would get the Seattle music scene noticed. I still love playing my Mother Love Bone CD. It is so good. Sadly though, I've yet to see MLB getting any attention by reactors. Nor much mention of in comments when this Temple of the Dog song is reacted to. There's some, yes, but the song is a deep and loving tribute to their lost friend, Andy.

God bless you, Chris. You brought more beauty and more incredible music, along with your TRULY INSANELY ambidextrous voice to my generation as I was born in 1980, and still, here in 2024, your voice still absolutely transcends generations of the past, and of generations to come for many many years. One of the top 3 voices of my generation. Chris, Eddy, and Layne. Rest in great and healing peace, you and Layne, and let Eddy keep your talents, as a collective and your styles and diversity haunt us and make us all so incredibly beyond what we know, to have been alive and very much listening SO closely to hear the incredible talent, writing, and singing that is and always will be your incredible gift. Love in life and death, Chris. Forever in our hearts and minds, as well as in our aspirations to be simply " better" as you were the very best of all of us and gave us something to "attempt" to aspire to. God rest your souls and body. I and we love and admire you forever. You were the one and only artist who taught me my range, emotion and heart chords to sing and write about. We miss and love you more than you know.

It remains hurtful that Chris Cornell (and Soundgarden) have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So it is very nice that such a technically accomplished singer would take the time to react to this song and appreciate its power.
I enjoy your American Songbook and movie covers. Your tenor and elocution are beautiful. I just love it that there’s room in the music world for tight, technical execution and raw, emotionalism like Cornell’s

This song never fails to bring goosebumps and tears.
I associate it with the death of a childhood friend that passed in 2014, as we grew up together during the 90s grunge era. It was the first song I heard after I found out he had died, and it's stuck with me every since.
Now though, it's also the deep sadness of losing Chris and how.
In 2017 I was at the Rockville festival, watching Soundgarden, who I never thought I'd be able to see ..... And in the middle of the set, the wind was howling and the band did "the day I tried to live", " been away too long" and "black days" in a row.....and the entire mood changed....the pain in Chris' voice was evident. It made you uneasy. He was vocally perfect, but you had this feeling of desperation, of the songs trully being sang from a dark place. I remember this feeling, standing in the crowd, with chill bumps and sadness. Then they kicked it back up for the rest of the set and you don't worry about it. Ya know?
19 days later, he was gone.
    😞

@@Aprlmoore I owe him so much. Through my insomnia-afflicted late teens and early twenties, I just about wore out the complete Soundgarden discography night after sleepless night. At first I was drawn in by the cool factor of the music, but then I realised that Chris Cornell was singing about the same pain and struggles with depression that I was going through. It felt like he was singing directly to me. At times when I felt suicidal, and I lost friends to suicide, Soundgarden gave me hope. After all, Cornell had been through everything I'd faced and a lot more besides, and he had come out of it better, stronger - *he had his shit together* - or so it seemed... until... and why did it have to be then, or there? The Detroit Fox Theatre has been on my list of places to go if ever I visit America since long before I ever heard a Soundgarden song, but it will now forever be tinged with sadness as a consequence of it having been the venue for Soundgarden's last gig. Maybe his wife bears some blame, but what about his poor kids? Whether he spontaneously killed himself or whether there's a grain of truth to any of the tinfoil-hat conspiracy theories surrounding his death (and that of Chester Bennington shortly thereafter), nobody stopped to think about how his poor kids would cope.

As mentioned above, I probably owe my life, such as it is, to her dad, and it will always break my heart that I could not repay the favour.
