China is partly the blame, or even Asia in general. The Chinese community is very strict and conservative, making young people feel very invaluable in the early stages of their lives. They are never listened to, their thoughts are ignored and their emotions are irrelevant to older people. They are all told to study all the time, they couldn't have a life people from the first world takes for granted. So the Internet is the most common to way to escape their normal world and dwell in a place where they can feel like a hero, important or successful. There is no easy way to change an entire social structure of a huge country like China, to become more socially equal. The only long-term answer is time. Good things come slowly, one at a time.
Nhân Lê in this documentary the rehabilitations include educating the parents that this type negligence is a negative, and that therefore their loneliness creates these addictive habits .
I live in China and I have direct experience with this kind of players. I think that the problem comes from the fact that these children's families push them to always stay at home or at school studying, scolding them often and seldom praising them, they have no other activities, free time with friends is limited, so they escape through the internet. But while girls seem to prefer social networks, (chatting, sharing pictures, watching videos) a lot of boys choose gaming, and once they start they want to become better at it, defeat more enemies, score higher to feel accomplished have some kind of proof that they are good at something. That's only my point of view, but because I live very close to one of them, I wanted to share.
My parents think I'm addicted to the internet because I spend upwards of 10 hours on it some days, but I'm not. I know that's what every addict says but when my computer broke and I couldn't use it for a week I was fine, I read and listened to music instead. I just choose to use the internet a lot because it's the most entertaining way to use my time.
I hear you. I'm 41 and I work my 40-53 hr a week job fine, sleep 6-7 hours and spend my other free time online. I still get bills paid, still go out with friends, still get food. But I'm online as much as possible. When I have my weekends off, I am online as much as possible. i have amazing friends online, I enjoy learning as much as I can. I both love and hate how I can google something and then a.d.d. onto 500 other things I see that I grow curious over. I also dislike how, instead of trying to use my memory to remember something I forgot (say the name of a show i used to watch as a kid or what ever), I will look it up online instead.
1manuscriptman I fully fully agree with you and yes it is quite terrifying. Not to turn all conspiracy theorist here, but many folk are starting to see frightening parallels with ''1984''. It's concerning in every aspect.
The underlying problem that they're dealing with isn't 'internet addiction', or 'gaming addiction'; its the sense of depersonalization, and sometimes outright sociopathy that comes from removing oneself from 'people' for an extended period... [hate to admit it, being that I am a bit of a gamer myself, but many 'western gamers' are complete assholes; their mentality leads to them thinking primarily of themselves and their goals, and viewing others as obstacles or tools, with many of them being fairly narcissistic and antisocial irl. I've never been much for 'competitive play' and 'zero sum games myself' though] The difference is one of culture; they view their connections to other people are important, western society views them in a utilitarian fashion. Hell, we condone people being absolute assholes so long as it 'gets the job done', or 'pays the bills.' A little extreme perhaps... but making someone feel the absence of what they're missing [in this case, their family, the lack of -actual- personal contact, real relationships with real people] goes a long way to having them understand that they are in fact missing something.
@@daemia There is a large debate around whether internet addiction is scientifically an actual addiction, but at least there's evidence that internet addiction exists. What evidence do you have for your claims?
@@iwantaoctosteponmyneckbut3545 you said it yourself, there's a disagreement on the topic in the science community as well. Psychologically, anything can be an "addiction" if you have poor boundaries and impulse control, but you don't get physical withdrawal symptoms from "internet addiction", there is no "high", there are no real "withdrawal clinics" that use actual developed treatment methods, only the kind of money-grab "camps" that'll release your children traumatized for life afterwards. Addiction is treated with therapy, not violence and oppression. Besides, the most obvious evidence is in the video itself, it's enough to take a look at these children and their parents to realize how ill prepared and utterly lacking in parenting skills these people are. They have no idea what they're doing or what can be done to change the situation in their own home, they'd rather put their children in the charge of abusive sociopaths than educate themselves on the topic and see what else can be done, or try to understand the actual reasons behind their child's misbehavior. They don't even think about the potential psychological damage they're causing which is going to be far worse than any "internet addiction" these neglected kids might have.
I think this is appropriate if it’s at the point where you’re wearing a diaper, but I also spend probably 7hrs a day on the internet and I see no problem with it. I still make six figures, pay all my bills, go to the gym, have many friends, plan fun trips abroad, and date girls. I think what people miss when they say “internet” is that the internet has replaced many things and combined them into one. For example when I waste time on the internet I am: Watching tv Listening to music Chatting with friends Shopping Paying bills Booking flights/hotels/activities Researching trips Reserving restaurants Reading about history Looking through photo albums Managing my investments Playing video games Checking email Requesting taxis Reading news/magazines Hitting on new girls and lining up dates Checking the weather Sharing my feelings through comments And so on. Before the internet, people did all of these things separately but now with technology, all people see is someone with their face buried in their smartphone or laptop with headphones, and they think,”wow what a zombie.” No! I’m not a zombie I’m doing exactly what I want to be doing. I’m a very functional and productive member of society as I’m very efficient with the internet. There’s no problem here move along!
This is just disgusting - All forms of addiction are caused by emotional neglect and depression, instead of providing them with love and care, they lock them up and abuse them and think that will make them feel better... More faith lost for humanity
that's not true.. many people grow up with love and become addicted to drugs and have other addictions.. let's place the blame where it belongs. ..PARENTS... parents need to start taking responsibility for their children's actions ... they brought them in this world they need to manage their children and stop blaming the addictions
@@Airportris You were born to function in society. I will support you with tuition (study) and food. Anything else is foreign and prone to be blamed, kay?
*Op-Doc: China's Web Junkies* nyti.ms/1bTJzfR Compulsive Internet use has been categorized as a mental health issue in many countries, including the United States, but China was among the first to label “Internet addiction” a clinical disorder. In this Op-Doc video, we show the inner workings of a rehabilitation center where Chinese teenagers are “deprogrammed.” The Internet Addiction Treatment Center, in Daxing, a suburb of Beijing, was established in 2004. It was one of the first of its kind - and there are now hundreds of treatment programs throughout China and South Korea. +Tyler Rossi And why the f*ck is the mother at 5:01 back row covering her face when the camera hits her direction.... Your child is addicted to the Internet!!! Not f*cking Crystal Meth or Heroin and robbing you for drugs.. get a grip lady
While there is some truth in your comment... I would kindly like to ask, do you know what it does to a parents heart, especially to a mom, to watch a good kid flushing all of his time on games, etc., instead of preparing themselves to live independently? Have you raised a child into adulthood? (Yes, I have. 3 of them.) Not to say that there shouldn't be time for recreation, and rest... but that's not what's at stake here. Also hardship often has a way of helping people to bond (if they have the right attitude). What doesn't kill you, should make you stronger.
OverdraftRanch I think a good reason young people in particular are drawn to their own realities is because this one doesn't offer freedom and self actualization. What kind of life is one where your brief experience of consciousness is wasted on tasks that don't enrich your life 50 hours a week or more. For what? The economy? An economy that's run by people who try to acquire as much money and assets as possible before they die, who don't seem to realize the futility. It's too bad parents become the bearers of the burden of their "unachieving" children which is another reason among myriad why they should be demanding for a proper welfare state. Yet even the allegedly democratic nations don't seem to manage to do that well. Which leads me to two possibilities, either the people want societal problems such as this, or, they don't live in real democracies. This all also assumes there is enough work available that could sustain these people, and it's a terrible assumption. Now it's all either very high requirement work which demands a lot of education or very low requirement work which doesn't pay well enough to live humanely, if at all. To blame youths or even to try to find the problem among them is a futile effort since the system created them.
You have to look at how dire China is as a country. Workers rights are non-existent, because men have more job opportunities, parents would much rather have a male child meaning that straight people cannot form relationships and it's just a horrible situation in their country. One of the reasons why game addiction is such a problem is because they'd MUCH rather sit around playing a game rather than work in conditions so harsh that there's suicide nets around the perimeter of their buildings. This isn't addiction, this is escapism and I cannot blame them. In the UK I'd rather sit and play videogames all day and our situation is great compared to theirs.
completely agree with you. Lot of schools in China have iron bars on every window like a prison to stop kids from jumping down, children have to study non-stop for up to 16 hours a day without any break, and if the teachers don't like you they'll humiliate you in front of everyone and even force your friends to start hating you... if I had to live in conditions like that for 9+ years, I'd probably also end up a game addict and try to use the internet as a mental painkiller
themori3 Yep, the kids on the videos is not kids who likes to play games. They are the people who spend days in Internet cafe and some of them even prefer to wear diapers instead of pee in the toilet. That's kind of weird isn't it?
+themori3 As an Asian American I agree. Before I reached high school, video games were restricted and I could only go on the internet an hour a day. It was not until I reached high school that my parents became more liberal with their thoughts.
I remember when i was a senior student, a dude from another dorm was so abysmally addicted. That he slept and ate on his chair 24/7 facing his computer. When he dragged himself to the rest room he looked like a freaking zombie.
I think it's horrible that they've incarcerated these kids just for playing games on the internet. It's not a crime. They are not only feeling lonely but also a lot of pressure to succeed. Everyone needs an escape, some pleasure and a community. It is so backwards that a parent would look at a kid participating in these stories and making friends and think they needed to be drugged and brought to a military camp.
@@jonasberg9328 what does it matter? The internet is everywhere, all you need is a source of money and you have access to the web, people don't accept in western society that web addiction is a real thing, internet junkies are everywhere and it is damaging children teens and millennials
This documentary is in fact 1 hr long. You can find it if you go here (it's a Chinese eqivalent of youtube I guess, and it has english subs) tw.iqiyi.com/v_19rr9grdk0.html
Wish this video was longer and goes into more depth into this really interesting topic. I wonder if these military camp style rehabs are actually helpful to the addicts in the long term.
actually, its more like internet video games addiction, since conventional console games in China do not exist. Nor is it really easy to get addicted to offline video games... Sim City maybe fun, but it certainly isn't life wasting worthy. Maybe Civ is a contender...
I think the real problem is that people are unhappy enough to play video games and use the internet nonstop. It's not just addiction. It's an outlet for stress, depression, and loneliness. It would be far more effective to focus on those problems than "internet addiction"
My heart goes out to those kids. The kind of shamming and disconnect they feel from their elders who do not understand them. I know there are people here in the USA that would like the same kind of camps. There is a generational divide on how folks view the internet and games. They the new media just overstimulated garbage that gets people addicted and has no cultural value. There are games and uses of the internet that are crappy and shallow, but there are also really remarkable human experiences that we share.
except those kids do not use the same internet we do. Chinese internet is awfully trashy and commercialized. And the wang ba (internet cafe) culture is definately not helping. Maybe if everyone was using the 'net at home on a expensive tablet, things would be better.
Kenttheclark Yeah, except perhaps only slightly. There are many many teenagers, kids, and adults with problems just as bad here in the west. And they have even more of a sense of entitlement in North America, I've observed.
I am surprised that the comments have been blaming the kids technology usage and not the barbaric treatment of the kids from a perceived problem. Learning moderation is healthy, but in this day and getting ahead of the curve with web technology and internet culture is a huge asset. Kids growing up without the internet will be at a huge disadvantage in most workplaces.
They can if they are building the next generation of the web :) I think the issue is they are not finding focus to make something out of the web. I wonder if China's censorship dissuades contribution and creation because of the harsh penalties.
Will Oberleitner how many people can be employed by the internet? how many people are employed in silicon valley? how many teenagers are there? you seem to forget that Chinese censorship doesn't care about creation and contribution, only political dissidence. if anything, it drives people to be more 'creative' about their protests.
The games they showed in the video are mostly MMORPGs, and unless you've played them before you honestly can't relate. I choose a bad time to get addicted to those games, junior year of highschool, which was last year. And I'm Chinese (lol...) so you can imagine how that turned out with my parents and my grades. Over the summer before junior year, I played those games 20 out of 24 hours every single day, and I cried when I was pulled away from the computer. The explanation "loneliness" is actually pretty accurate. Well, I forced myself to quit without a boot camp at least.
I spend around 6-8 hours a day on my computer, not learning, but doing research (f.e. tech news), playing videos games etc. On weekends, around 12-14 hours. I consider myself an internet addict. So, am I a complete failure in life now? No, I study economy based computer science and work part time for a software development company. In addition, I create websites for customers and do hardware recommendations for pc hardware configurations for certain purposes (self employed). And I did not achieve that by going into an internet addiction facility, but by having the support of my family, that is ongoing. While many of those people in the 'clinic' might not transfer their knowledge about technology into an advantage in their life, I think some of them would have. Having a passion about something is now always bad, even if it is video games. My interest for technology and its economy started with my passion for video games. As far as the treatment goes, I am a psychiatrist, but I do not think treating them like they are in a military base is not going to help them. Integrating them back to society and their families by separating them from it is not the way to treat them in my opinion. But again, I would need to study psychiatry to make a useful statement about this ;-)
"one recent study shows that people who spent more than six hours, for other than work or study, are more likely to develop internet addiction" up to six hours, other than work or study, so you're not in the category
+Fata Morgana That's not how addiction works. Nobody's gonna quit the internet for a month because a random stranger on the internet says "Try not to use the internet for a month". You're addicted when you start sacrificing very important things just so you can play those games or can sit on facebook/youtube all day long, or when you can't stop thinking about internet when you're on an awesome holiday trip.
Part of me feels addicted to the internet to a point it really often interferes with more than just my social life but my school life and work life as well. I would be open to admitting I have a problem and want to fix it but the person closest to me is someone I only know online and I feel like I can't walk away from it because I don't want to walk away from them. So instead I always convincingly find a way to tell everyone around me it's fine and everyone(including parents who accused me of being addicted) gives up on convincing me otherwise fairly quickly because I'm good with words I guess.
If you realize that you have a problem you should do something about it! Change does not come without sacrifice, you should well know that. What works for me is having a plan, or a list of things I have to do everyday : the list helps me focus on things I have to get better at or things I should avoid. If i dont have a list i find it hard to control myself and I do whatever I feel like doing. Remember that changing yourself is not an easy thing, and it does not happen from one day to another, you have to try to improve yourself day by day even if just a little. Even if you fail it does not matter, the important thing is getting back up and remembering that you are doing this for yourself and for your own well being. Good luck random person on the net, I hope you see this and think about it, even just for the time you are reading this. Have a good day :)
Compared to other places people with addictions are sent (mostly illegal drugs) I don't think this is so much worse - judging by the video at least. One has to keep in mind that we're talking about China as well. People talk about how Chinese kids are overwhelmed with pressure and do not have free time whatsoever. And that's true for the most part. But that does not mean it is less of an addiction. Note: We're not talking about a weekend of gaming or two or three hours daily. The guy said people who spend six hours and more are in danger/count as addicted. One might say "that's what they say but they put people there who only spend an hour per day gaming". And that might be true for some of them, it's the parents who send them there after all and they can say whatever they want. - But we hear the kids too. Being at school at day and gaming all through the night every night; not as two or three hours again, but as going there in the evening and coming back in the morning. Or playing for three days straight. - That is a serious addiction. And it seems the people there have very well realized that it is not just the kids fault but that the parents play a huge part in it. The person in that session was basically scolding the parents for only yelling at their kids, expecting them to do fine but not being there for them in any way. - One has to note: the daily dose of love is not a part of Chinese mentality. Parental love is not shown by hugging and comforting as it is in most western cultures, it is shown by supporting their kids financially and giving them what they need to lead a successful life (means: anything they need to study and do good at school they will get). It's more like the "tough love" one sometimes hears about. [And yes, I am generalizing here but it is important to understand that the concept of parental love is different. - Because of this it is so easy for parents and kids to misunderstand and to cross the line between "teaching self discipline" and "creating unbearable pressure"]. That being said: Yes, there is a lot room for improvement here. - But it is a step in the right direction. [And in case this is not clear: Of course for documentaries there is only a fraction of the truth shown, especially when it comes to countries like China. It's not meant in an offensive way it's just an objective fact one has to keep in mind. - So I want to say once more: When I say this is a step in the right direction I mean what we see and hear in this video.]
I'm sure you're in a position of desperation to understand where these families are coming from and what caused them to make this drastic decision. /sarcasm
No one seemed to comment on the speaker at 5:00. Everyone's too busy trying to decide whether the camp is barbaric or smart. Did anyone stop to actually read or listen to this man's words? "Criticizing, accusing, and blaming," he says of the parents in the group, saying that it's no way to "fix" your kid, that they fail to recognize the root of the problem and how they've come into their "addictions." Let's not think about the topic being an internet addiction but rather a child's behavior in general. Parents often punish their child for their behavior, rather than route back to why their behavior has become a problem. This man just said that with another choice of words. Open your eyes, people. The few seconds that man spoke were probably the most informative piece about this "rehab facility." These kids wear diapers to avoid "distracting" their gameplay performance, so they don't need to use the restroom. That's sick, and they need help. If not this type of rehabilitation, at least it's a step toward something. Can you come up with an idea to help these kids? Launch it, too?
There's truthiness to this. I was chatting with one of my friends in an online game. She said that she needed to go to the bathroom, and I told her to go. She said that going to the bathroom would interrupt conversing with her friends, and that she has been holding it in for 2 hours.
i like the idea, but reactivity would likely occur (see Hawthorne Effect). people (incl. these facilities no doubt) tend to put on a show when they're aware they're being watched.
The problem with this camp is that , eventually you will be required to use internet for work or project, etc, so won't they just relapse, what's the point?
I was addicted to porn. Had physical withdrawl symptoms. Then I quit the internet, and the same thing, physical withdrawl symptoms. You can't put your brain, spirit in an alternate universe forever. Take it from me. I'm 30 years old and my life has gone nowhere. It's one big blur and the internet was always there. It will suck your soul in. My dreams became Vivid. Being around people was energizing. My best advice is to . Quit now.
I dont blame kids for being 'addicted' to gaming in such a country... Humans live on dignity... Their dignity is their gaming talent. Of course they wouldnt want to lose a single game. What else is there to do in such a strict country? Everyone needs joy in their lives. And before someone comes and say that I am racist.. I like communism, but not like this.
I'm not sure why everyone is saying the government is running this? this doesn't seem any different from parents sending their kids to boot camp here in the states. From the 7 minutes here, it seems that these kids are here because of their parents, not the government
We need camps for conservatives trying to put their noses up some one else lives and how they spend free time. And over protective mothers who think their kid is an addict because television told her.
I'm sure some idiots will suspect their offspring or friends for internet addiction over this without actually finding out that this is for the extreme cases. Extreme cases include when so-called internet addiction becomes a health hazard, an excuse to abstain from work or other general duties. Even then, addiction is a wrong word. You cannot be addicted to an activity, any addiction requires a substance, otherwise you could claim you're addicted to going to sleep or waking up, or talking to people because you feel the need to do so. Internet addiction cannot be traced to asocial behavior, because some people are just more asocial by nature. And remember, China is doing this to get money out of their people and force them to be mindless workers instead of individuals if given the opportunity. "Internet addiction" is a "clinical disorder endangering teenagers", because a) teenagers are still in a state where their mental state is easily programmable b) China needs cheap labor, and never has enough. The only claim for their "cure for addiction" is that the unfortunate people who are forced to go through this are extremely scared of being forced to it again. This in long term will lead to depression, because people just cannot deal with constant dread, especially if it has to do with normal human functions. The social pressure on them and constant forced pressure from parents will provide China with an entirely stagnant society. Children need to 'rebel' away from parents to help improve the country, and ultimately the world. It's entirely unsurprising that the entirety of the staff running this facility is of "older stock" so to speak of; people who refuse to understand that change is happening whether they desire it or not. The claims the director makes at 5:25 are a complete proof of pretty much everything i just stated. Apparently playing and socializing with a bunch of friends over the internet is attributable to loneliness in his mind, because he cannot grasp that friends need not always be face to face. This option didn't exist during his youth, so it's entirely alien to him. He is trying to cure a personality trait called being an "introvert" instead of the more common "extrovert".
I feel so bad for the kids. These kids are so into the internet because they have no companions, their parents are horrible and don't spend enough time with them! You have got to be close to your kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"since my son started playing online games, he became cruel" its called being teenager.. part of life.. be a parent instead of giving up on your son.. its not hard to just take out the internet... he feel lonely bc you actually not there for him when he needs you pathetic parrents
The juxtaposition "help people with military procedures and routines/tell the parents to be more present in their sons' life" it's absolutely stunning. It really impressed me
I viewed this as total failure of parenting. The parents can't control their kids in certain way that the kids would co-operate. It is not the kids fault wanting to have some fun and living their imaginary world FOR A WHILE. But if the kids go on and plays for prolonged time than it is fully parental ignorance. Thus, parents who still thinks traditionally will send their kids to get some disciplinary acts within those sinister place just because they are unable to discipline their own kids. Sad story.
While I do realize that the internet can be addictive, China's means of seeing to the issue is a bit extreme. . .but then again China is well known for being extreme in it's methods. What gets me though is the fact these kids choose to stay on the computer like that. They are young, healthy and have the means to do a lot more than just sit at the computer gaming. It may just be due to my situation that I look at those kids and go "What the hell is wrong with you? You have your health, use it!" because I have difficulty getting around due to my health and sometimes I only feel well enough to get on the computer due to said health so I can't understand why someone would choose such a lifestyle willingly. Still, why do that to yourself? I would give anything to be well enough to do other things but here these kids are with the means to do more physically demanding activities but they're choose to stagnate. I guess they don't realize just how valuable the health and physical ability they currently have really is, and they likely won't realize it until it's gone.
Getting good grades is probably the most important thing in Chinese schools, therefore this is what the students try to do 95% of the time. They rarely get time or opportunities to do something else. All they have to do is to focus on their studying. When I was in gr.7, for instance, every art and music class - sometimes even gym class was taken by either Chinese or Maths or Science (or subjects which people consider are the "more important") teachers to give us extra classes. I'm not saying that everyone there is hopeless - because I do know many friends who I admire and I'm sure will be successful, but many more are struggling desperately and even giving up, because they are not exactly good at academic stuff and therefore think themselves helpless and useless. This is exactly what happened to a friend of mine. She has not yet - fortunately - given up, but she does feel depressed because she thinks herself dumb and helpless, while in truth she is one of the most caring, kind-hearted and hard-working people I've ever met, and I felt quite heart broken when she thought so. Even if some people do not yet know where their interests lie, they almost never get a chance to find out because, as I've said above, they are told to only focus on studying. There are two big exams in China, one to get into high school and the other to get into university, and those are what students spend their whole 9 (or 12) school years preparing for. They cannot see beyond that, because they only set their mind on these two exams and getting good grades on them. Hence - I'm finally getting into my point :P - it's easy for students to get "addicted" to Internet and games because they help them to set their minds on something else. They are able to be someone they would like to be. I guess this is probably the same case for many people enjoying gaming - but it's dangerously easy to get addicted to this kind of "fulfilling" feeling in games, esp. if you barely get to choose anything IRL. As for health... well, since gym classes can be cancelled and students are always told to focus on their studying, it's kind of neglected... Of course, not ALL students are in this kind of state, and Chinese schools are certainly not like hell, either. It's just that I've been thinking about these for a long time, for I see so many people spending hours and hours online and are completely indifferent to their RL studying or even jobs. And this is the answer I come up with. It's not the one and only reasons - but it is indeed one of the reasons, which makes this kind of camps completely useless and unhelpful because the students will still need to face their stressed study life once they leave. It would be much more helpful to simply teach them the way to deal with stress. :S
Cherrie W. Yeah, both China and Japan put a lot of pressure on kids to get high marks in school. Too much pressure honestly. I can understand them wanting that escape but there's better ways. If their health starts failing I'm willing to bet they would look back on their younger years and wish for that health back, health they wasted doing nothing but gaming and internet surfing. Only young once after all and, being a gamer myself, I understand the appeal and how it can be tempting to get lost in the games when life gets tough and stress levels are up. But I also understand the need for some balance and moderation. I guess I'm a bit bias on the topic too though, being someone who's poor health (genetics and physical trauma that were beyond my control caused it, far from self caused considering I was a workout nut before I got sick) prevents me from going out and doing things that require some physical strain I look at the situation with those kids and go "What I wouldn't give to have the health they're wasting!" but, well, I guess we all find our escapes and comfort in different ways. As for your friend, sounds like she has some good qualities and being hard working is far too under-appreciated these days, it's a quality I wish more people had. Plus book smarts is far from the only measure of intellectual ability, some learn better with experience, like myself, others are more knowledgeable in creative fields so your friend may do just fine after all the academic stuff is done with.
Extreme? More like bat shit crazy. Like the kid in the video says. It's not an illness it's a behaviour. These parents are absolutely bonkers. They're the ones that need help.
All you young kids talking about your health problems and all it is is your parents won't take the food out of your mouth as I guarantee you have diabetes or obese thyroid condition and your 13 and you're getting a hum around before you get a car
I have been addicted to online games most of my college life, and it did ruin it since I used to bunk classes and exams. My parents were really disappointed in me. I finally dropped out of college because I just gave up. I started some other course, something I wanted to do myself rather then what my parents told me to do. (They made me do Engineering even though I had no interest in it.) I decided since I m addicted to games, I would do something related to it. I managed to find a job as a Game Tester while doing a degree course in Animation. Earned money and paid for the course myself. I slowly lost interest in gaming but obviously not completely, I still play it everyday but just for a few hours. I did excellent work at the job and was clearing my animation course. I won my parent's trust by showing them I can work hard still. They still want me to stop playing games at the age of 25 now but I can't, it's my passion. I am happy this isn't there in my country or else I would have surely been thrown in there.
Well, these "internet junkies" are the ones who don't help in worsening overpopulation. They exist because the internet exists. Those who inhibited their lifestyle were those who had a sad childhood, or probably kept on losing online against those awesome players.
Addiction is simply a way to deal with unwanted emotions or thoughts. Internet addiction, as any other addiction, is simply treating the symptoms and it's quite useless without treating the cause. The emotions and thoughts themselves. Sometimes it's loneliness, boredom, anxiety, whatever. Find better ways to deal with it and you'll be fine.
I can see that my opinion or comment isn't needed at all here as I think the subject has been covered very well indeed by some very switched on people.Thank you for helping a little to renew my faith in humanity.
This is insane! It's no way to treat them! The guy says they feel lonely and seek companions in Internet cafe. Why take them there and make them even lonelier instead of consulting with the families and the kids?!! THEY are the ones who "know nothing about humans beings"!!
The ones who can get an education, don't want it. Those who can't get education, yearn for it. Blame it on the parents who are working - the child is lonely... I spent my childhood, playing, running, exploring, studying. I don't remember ever saying "I'm bored" or "I'm lonely"
***** the Internet doesn't give you depression that's a pile of horse shit. The only way it's going to depress you is if you read up on heartbreaking stories and search pictures of abused animals and dead babies. Playing video games like these Chinese kids will not depress you the reason you play online games in the first place is because it makes you happy.
Maybe if you did a little reading and writing instead of being on-line all the time you would know to use the word "than" rather than "then" in your sentence, "Oh well, better than doing drugs and drinking beer". I corrected two other mistakes in that sentence. Reading and writing are important and there's no reason a person can't use the internet while drinking beer and doing drugs. Those three things don't have to be done exclusive of each other.
In modern industrial society it's hard to form bonds with people that were quite common in hunting and agricultural society's was essentially part of the culture every culture now we know everybody but at the same time no one so we replaced placing bonds with people to technology and inanimate objects
My mom: "You're addicted to your phone and to the internet". Me: uses the internet to watch and download movies, music and documentaries; uses the internet to chat with people all over the world in five different languages to improve my skills; uses the internet to help suicidal people who have no one to talk to; uses the internet to read blogs, books in PDF format and news paper articles...I REALLY WASTE MY TIME LOL
+MsTheeloisa Since you achieve so much with the internet, more than I ever will I hope you become some one successful, and not waste your time on pointless video's on youtube.
+MsTheeloisa There is a major difference between how the average person use the internet and those who are addicted. Nobody would agree that what you do online is wrong, but there are those people, particularly in the millennial generation who became dependent on the Internet for purposes other than personal necessity, education and work. I have a cousin who happens to have the same issue. Either he's on his computer playing Minecraft for over 8 hours a day or playing Candy Crush on his iPhone to the point that it is interfering with his physical and psychological well-being and relationship with his family.
I don't believe this military camp works because it did not have scientific therapies or methods to reduce the loneliness of those children. they are just being grounded, and they do not feel even if a little of hope and confidence of not being addicted to the Internet games.
If your son stayed inside the house for 1 month, plays games 12 hours a day, spends the whole day in his room and asks you to bring him his meals, and wear nappies what would you do?
It's nice that the video shows how an internet addiction can be fueled by both the parents' and child's actions or inaction. Sometimes the parents will drive the child to further internet use, and sometimes the child drives the parents away.
Initially, I was horrified, but then I realized that they were training and involving the parents as well, and I was so surprised. It's not uncommon to find programs that aim to promote systematic change in Asian countries. Children are often blamed for various issues. When he said, "Do you know your children are lonely?" it really struck me. It brought back memories of the loneliness I felt as a child and how I would escape into cartoons to find solace.
It's sad because the reason why they're addicted is due to the strict parenting in China and "tiger parenting". They want an escape from the stress in their lives but instead they are given the opposite by being sent to a camp. The parents believe that this is the best for their child but instead it will only deteriorate their mental health. They will stop using the internet, they will stop gaming, but as a byproduct they will have trauma.
What the hell? Here in my country, Finland we have Playstation 3:s in EVERY prison cell(?) and good noutricious food? O.O We allso have FREE healthcare in prisons and NO DEATH penalty. Seeing this makes me wonder... Is this worth punishing people so hard..? If murderer- rapists get better care, than in a- bit- lower- than- avarage home in Finland... This really makes me want switch the places between internet- addicts in China and murderous sex- criminals in Finland. I MEAN, Some people in Finland go VOLENTARELY to prison if they're homeless. (For example.) O.O I am shocked about that comparison fact. O__O
You people do realize that people make more money gold farming on mmo's then they would working in a sweatshop, yeah? Seriously, you just run bot/multi-log clients and farm mmo's, then you sell the in-game gold to westerners for far more profit than working in a sweatshop.
Parents drug their children to take them to this place and then there's that one youngest kid that only spent a month on the "internet" the way they say it reminds me when people feel ashamed of using heroin. I'd understand something like this could be useful for people who wear literal diapers but a 9-12 year old kid that spent a month on the big bad "internet" gets put into a military camp? How crazy would i look there with the way i spent 7 hours on pc every day for last 15 years, when i was a kid i played games on my pc with my best friends before i had internet (mame32 if anyone remembers) mostly after i grew up, it just became more accessible, many more websites, possibility to watch movies with no delay, shopping.. I would've reduced the time if internet didn't evolve the way it did. I may seem addicted but i've spent month without pc when i was studying for exams, i literally just told myself i'll prove it to my parents and everyone who thinks i am addicted that i am not and i won't touch it for a month. This is not the only occasion with me being without pc/internet for a longer period of time. I had no reaction to not having access, may have felt a little bored at times but a good book solves my problems, i usually read often on the internet at least a few hours a day for last few years so going back to books was weird. Otherwise everything is on the internet these days, why would i just not use it for such long periods of time every day? There are some health problems that can occur but i try to remedy this by going to the gym and i do cardio every 3-4 days.
Some people play video games for 12 hours per day. Especially people on welfare programs. Addiction is very real. I used to play WoW for 12 hours per day until I burnt out. Now I find MMORPGS to be very boring. I guess I recovered?
The parents want to pay, the doctors want the money, if only we could ignore all the data and make this an "addiction" to "treat" then were in business! What you say? The kids will suffer needlessly? oh a little suffering never hurt anyone...
I kinda wish they could expand on this a bit, it's kind of interesting to see how far being addicted to games can go and how it impacts your life. And how China deals with those who are, and if the treatment truly effects them and their parentals in a positive way.
I see a lot of people comparing internet addiction to drug addiction, I feel in a way they cant be compared. Drugs are truly mind altering and create chemical imbalances and dependencies. The internet is something these kids choose to do day in and day out, I do feel that this "treatment" is extreme if parents have to drug their kids to get them there. My GF said i was addicted to gaming because on my day off I may play Call Of Duty for 4 hrs, we need to understand what addiction is in relation to what a person is addicted to.
what you do intead of internet? phone? same thing.I'm teen and i watch movies on the internet i also read on the internet. My friends are distant and i prefer surrounding myself with succesful ppl
Internet addiction is just as serious and real as any other addiction. For those of u hating on the chinese, there are boot camps like this in korea and japan, .. probably in other asian countries as well. Maybe with less extensive barbed wiring but still.. imo a strict military regimen for 3-4 months is healthy and helps break the vicious neurological cycle of addiction (Before my brother joined the military he used to be a pretty serious gamer. He would sometimes go without sleep for 2-3 days straight. Boot camp put his sleep cycles back on track among other things. He still enjoys games, but plays them only casually now). And if you're a gamer, you know well that asian gamers are far more hardcore than your average american/european gamer. Asians are not born with starcraft/LoL genes. Gaming addiction is a very serious problem in the asian male teen demographic atm.
+affogato luv i think US bootcamps where parents can send their kids away for any reason are far worse.. at least they are fed decently.. many documented abuses in US troubled teens boot camps... ,but i don't think that boot camp is the solution.. the solution is counseling and there are other less extreme ways
Former Starcraft hardcore player gets treated and now spend his time as a voracious Big Fish Games' player. Casual for most part of it all. And he has a keen eye for that Hidden Object game genre. Very good of a change so far.
My generation is seriously addicted to the internet. Most of the people I see around me can't go more than 5 or 10 minutes without checking their phones, playing a game or on facebook. Instead of sending them to a boot camp, I think parents need to take more responsibility. Teach your kids to play outside, get them interested in hobbies, actually interact with them as a family. I think most of us go online for some sort of social interaction and self confirmation (look how awesome I am at this game, look how many friends I have on fb, etc.), because we don't know how to get it anywhere else.
Chinese families are somewhat too much "functional". Like "I gave you birth for you to be functional in society, I support you with food and tuition fee. When you grow up, do the same for your son/daughter." Its all about function and structure, instead of love/engagement/childhood.
What most probably they need is find another hobbies beside internet and online games. Its common that these kids are social withdrawn or lonely but the only thing I see on this treatment is forcing them not to do it "NOT" making them not to do it and also what this treatment is lacking is social activities which basically the most important thing to do.
Problem is most people become addicted to the internet because of the lack of social relationships other than chatting with friends who are far from them. That's how I became addicted. I tried to be friends with people on my city, never worked out so I turned to chatting on facebook
***** Update here. I kinda have a social circle of people I know in my town now. I have a metal band and I've also met a lot of great people at college and some people who I met through my friends at college. So I do have a group of people I can rely unto. But I still love to chat with my online friends, it's just...different lol. Even my girlfriend is far away, we've been together for 1 year, and it kinda sucks to be far away from each other, but it's just how stuff goes
+Cahen Seriously though... I'm on the computer from the time I wake up until the time I fall asleep apart from the occasional times I have to go out somewhere or do something... but I've gone a couple weeks without internet access sometimes while visiting family and I was just fine. Had a lot of catching up to do when I got home, but fine otherwise. I don't see why some people demonize such a useful thing. You can do so many diverse things on the computer, it's a shame some people don't get that.
This is kind of troubling, but it seems like the people behind the rehab centre at least understand the source of the problem. Bringing in the parents for counseling is straight up progressive when you compare them to other "Youth Rehab" centres in the West.
Treating one extreme with another. This is not how you fix a problem nor treat an addiction. There are more deep rooted psychological issues at cause for the behaviour of these children. They need psychotherapy and not this inhumane torture.
"My son is very cruel!" "Today we had to drug him to bring him here'' Uh.. okay, I can see how mom and son are related. Honestly I can't imagine this helping if the children themselves don't want to cooperate and get drugged because of it. I think the latter has more long term effects than a bloody internet addiction.
Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't a summer camp style reform be a viable option? The film would do well to address the question of loneliness within the treatment center. Gaming in and of itself is often social in a sense (here seen as a negative) but with most of Chinese families having one child, maybe study groups? Gamer groups that are encouraged to meet each other locally and talk of their exploits? Many people are perfectly fine with this type of solitude, great. But mom says her son became cruel and cold while gaming. Kids spending 3 days in a cafe... What do they do after 3 months of cell life and army drills? Become warm and friendly?
I'm willing to admit that internet addiction is real and I probably fit in that category, but I don't think this is the right way to go about treating it. These kids aren't drug addicts they just need a better structured schedule. I know I do.
they have a point ... i spend almost 4 hours on RUclips every day and am a college student ... i cant skip a day without watching speedier ...I need to go there to live a normal live .
Well then how come most Chinese kids grow up to be normally functioning adults?
so true, great comment
@Berserker In that case, maybe i'll sign up to buy one of those. I could use a roboter to clean the house :P
Nhân Lê in this documentary the rehabilitations include educating the parents that this type negligence is a negative, and that therefore their loneliness creates these addictive habits .

Exactly my thoughts! These parents do crazy things to their kids and then wonder why they are estranged?
same way as my dad did to me.
Don’t worry it’s normal for asain parents to do that if there internet addicts
Asian parents way of "showing love"
If you sit in a cafe for three days straight you have a problem.
I agree with you
You would be dead bruh
What is the difference from sitting in your room for 3 days
Like Hong Kong did
my friends did that.. LoL
^this
As long as you don't throw your life away and take care of yourself its fine.

I fully fully agree with you and yes it is quite terrifying.
Seriously ironic to be viewing this video on the Internet anyways.
Get me an application form for this place.
Only if you think this sort of thing is normal. There's no such thing as an internet addiction, only neglected children and poor impulse control.
They don't even think about the potential psychological damage they're causing which is going to be far worse than any "internet addiction" these neglected kids might have.
youre the kind of person who looks at an ironing board and tell people thats irony
This was awkward for me to watch. Considering for the last 5 years how much time I have spent online. Anyone else feel the same?
One kid said he played "the computer for 1 month" and got dragged to that camp. Pretty Nightmarish.
Really awkward
I think this is appropriate if it’s at the point where you’re wearing a diaper, but I also spend probably 7hrs a day on the internet and I see no problem with it.
I still make six figures, pay all my bills, go to the gym, have many friends, plan fun trips abroad, and date girls.
I think what people miss when they say “internet” is that the internet has replaced many things and combined them into one. For example when I waste time on the internet I am:
Watching tv
Listening to music
Chatting with friends
Shopping
Paying bills
Booking flights/hotels/activities
Researching trips
Reserving restaurants
Reading about history
Looking through photo albums
Managing my investments
Playing video games
Checking email
Requesting taxis
Reading news/magazines
Hitting on new girls and lining up dates
Checking the weather
Sharing my feelings through comments
And so on.
TheAmazed5 Am a net addict lol. Need rehab asap

Drugged your kid with sleeping pills to take him to rehab... LOL HOW IRONIC
Those who take drugs usually go to rehab...but they were drugged and then went to rehab
This is just disgusting - All forms of addiction are caused by emotional neglect and depression, instead of providing them with love and care, they lock them up and abuse them and think that will make them feel better...
More faith lost for humanity

*Op-Doc: China's Web Junkies* nyti.ms/1bTJzfR
Compulsive Internet use has been categorized as a mental health issue in many countries, including the United States, but China was among the first to label “Internet addiction” a clinical disorder.
(The first inpatient Internet addiction program in the United States recently opened in Pennsylvania.)

It seems as though most of these teens are addicted to games, rather than the internet.
Wearing diapers to avoid going to the bathroom? This takes internet addiction to a whole new level.

Um, you are aware jobs are used to benefit society right. Also this video is about extreme addiction not regular gaming.
Dog but you live in a trailer admit it
completely agree with you.
Is internet addiction more of a problem in China? I got the sense that most of these kids were escaping their strict home lives.
themori3 In china, teenagers die of malnutrition after playing video games for days on end refusing to eat or sleep.
Howard Sterling Addiction takes on many forms.
themori3 Yep, the kids on the videos is not kids who likes to play games. They are the people who spend days in Internet cafe and some of them even prefer to wear diapers instead of pee in the toilet. That's kind of weird isn't it?
tnt ntn it's mind-boggling.
This is addiction not regular gaming.
@@tang2151 but is it really necessary to electrocute innocent teens and kids?

They make a confusion between video games addiction and internet addiction. For me it's not the same.
actually, its more like internet video games addiction, since conventional console games in China do not exist. Nor is it really easy to get addicted to offline video games... Sim City maybe fun, but it certainly isn't life wasting worthy. Maybe Civ is a contender...
this better not increase gold prices
I think the real problem is that people are unhappy enough to play video games and use the internet nonstop. It's not just addiction. It's an outlet for stress, depression, and loneliness. It would be far more effective to focus on those problems than "internet addiction"
"I think the real problem is that people are unhappy enough to play video games and use the internet nonstop."
Why do you say so?
Yes
Addiction always cover other issues. You know what it may be?
Too bad your mom isn't there to drug you and drag you away
okay i sit on the internet all day but im not addicted . Addiction is when you know you cant get enough of it but I can easily go and read a book
+Ram Varain try to not use the internet for one month, or only use it for work but nothing else, and you will see if you are addicted.
+Fata Morgana I go skate
:D dk haven't seen one in a while
Good, i like my books real and touchable but i still read rarely
Ohh this comment did not age well..
Sending people to concentration camps for playing video games.
+Hans W Yes, that the way!
I'm sure you're in a position of desperation to understand where these families are coming from and what caused them to make this drastic decision. /sarcasm
Hans W because they can't concentrate
Hans W i mean, they aren't being mistreated or abused, or starved. So its fine. Its like living in school
Hardly
Why not look into an average day in these facilities instead of piecing together a bunch of kids' reactions?
i like the idea, but reactivity would likely occur (see Hawthorne Effect).
people (incl. these facilities no doubt) tend to put on a show when they're aware they're being watched.
The problem with this camp is that , eventually you will be required to use internet for work or project, etc, so won't they just relapse, what's the point?
At the beginning I thought it was a cruel place but gradually I saw how bad some of these kids were.
Quit now.
Throwing all your mistakes in internet won't help you, you need to blame your self not the internet.
Rina NO ITS NOT YOU ARE ADDICTED
@@markgable1280 STFU KID
I'm not sure why everyone is saying the government is running this? this doesn't seem any different from parents sending their kids to boot camp here in the states. From the 7 minutes here, it seems that these kids are here because of their parents, not the government
We need one of these camps in America. And there's a difference between internet addiction and video game addiction.
We need camps for conservatives trying to put their noses up some one else lives and how they spend free time. And over protective mothers who think their kid is an addict because television told her.
86Corvus You liberals are bunch of hypocrites
Sad story.
1:43 turn right!
I know the situation here depicted is a serious issue, but i couldn't help myself go stop the video entirely and crack out laughing at this
Sitting at your computer for 3 days : Addicted.
Bing Watching 100 episodes of the office on netflix : Dedicated.
aint this online gaming addiction?
Great point there.
There really is a fine line between "internet addiction" and "online gaming addiction"

I have been addicted to online games most of my college life, and it did ruin it since I used to bunk classes and exams.
My parents were really disappointed in me.
I finally dropped out of college because I just gave up.
I started some other course, something I wanted to do myself rather then what my parents told me to do. (They made me do Engineering even though I had no interest in it.)
I decided since I m addicted to games, I would do something related to it.
The lecturer is spot on about being lonely, knowing the internet better than people, and finding friends there.
The loneliness.
Thats what got to me.

Victor Tesla Yep Internet Reduce Lonely and Depression
Maybe if you did a little reading and writing instead of being on-line all the time you would know to use the word "than" rather than "then" in your sentence, "Oh well, better than doing drugs and drinking beer". I corrected two other mistakes in that sentence. Reading and writing are important and there's no reason a person can't use the internet while drinking beer and doing drugs. Those three things don't have to be done exclusive of each other.
Yup, smokin weed drinking beer playing games. There's definitely no gamer like that out there.
In modern industrial society it's hard to form bonds with people that were quite common in hunting and agricultural society's was essentially part of the culture every culture now we know everybody but at the same time no one so we replaced placing bonds with people to technology and inanimate objects

Either he's on his computer playing Minecraft for over 8 hours a day or playing Candy Crush on his iPhone to the point that it is interfering with his physical and psychological well-being and relationship with his family.
when my broadband goes off people go missing in my town.

Aren't most people addicted to the internet?, why not?
53 70 6f 6f 6b 79 3f this in particular refers to online video gaming, not Internet for general or work/study purpose
I’m surprised I can’t find comments about this being based on a true story from Dbd The Doctor
Korean students volunteer to join a camp like that on vacations for their academic pursuit.
I'm disagree with that way of dealing with these people ....
Yes, THERE'S a smart comment!
And about military training... If you're floppy- feeted or diagnosed with ADHD, ADD or even asperger, they will ban you from military duty. O__O
This is why I like Europe, they're nice people and have bright good cultures.
I've been in that situation...addicted to online games. I don't know if treating them like that in there is the solution.
There are some health problems that can occur but i try to remedy this by going to the gym and i do cardio every 3-4 days.
they need to send my brother there LOL serious addiction. it seriously ruin people lives.

Some people play video games for 12 hours per day. Especially people on welfare programs. Addiction is very real. I used to play WoW for 12 hours per day until I burnt out. Now I find MMORPGS to be very boring. I guess I recovered?
mstrkrft182 Or they just keep changing the game until it's made for casuals and then there's really no point.
FoolyLiving Yeah they definitely made WoW a joke.
So, if they use the Net for work and study, it's OK. But if they use it for personal enjoyment, they're addicted?
for godsakes... they use diapers...just to not go to the bathroom...personal enjoyment, really now?

The delusions of the people of the world are certainly interesting.
What most probably they need is find another hobbies beside internet and online games. Its common that these kids are social withdrawn or lonely but the only thing I see on this treatment is forcing them not to do it "NOT" making them not to do it and also what this treatment is lacking is social activities which basically the most important thing to do.
Served these game junkies. Now i can go back farming unique items peacefully without worrying about these pesky farmers.
Even my girlfriend is far away, we've been together for 1 year, and it kinda sucks to be far away from each other, but it's just how stuff goes
i use the internet around 8-9 hours a day but if i have to go somewhere like on holiday, then i am fine without internet
+Cahen That's what we all say.
Imagine turning off your phone and think about all the important emails you would miss in the next 6 hours.
Who's here after hearing David Choe on JRE?
Treating one extreme with another. This is not how you fix a problem nor treat an addiction. There are more deep rooted psychological issues at cause for the behaviour of these children. They need psychotherapy and not this inhumane torture.
I think I'm going to go to a park today.
"My son is very cruel!"
"Today we had to drug him to bring him here''
Uh.. okay, I can see how mom and son are related.
“What’re you in for?”
“I played video games.”
Doctor From Dead By Daylight?!?!??! FENG LI?!?!!
