Exploring the Insane World of Colleen Hoover (Part 2)
Hey guys welcome back to the channel! Today we're continuing the series on tik tok's most ~popular and controversial author~ Colleen Hoover! In the first part we covered Ugly Love, if you missed it you can watch it here:
    • Exploring the Insane W...
But today we'll be covering the two stories that going into this series I expected would be the "best" judging by the reception I had seen both of them get online. It Ends With Us is easily Colleen's biggest book and gained a lot of hype thanks to a ton of videos from booktok going viral showing readers being pushed to tears. All Your Perfects on the other hand was one I noticed popped up on a ton of top 5 lists when people were ranking her catalouge, citing it as an underappreciated deep cut. So today we'll be looking at both :)
If you've read either of these books let me know what you think btw!! ALSO HOW DID SO MANY OF U GET INTO THAT FACEBOOK GROUP WITH NO ISSUE LIKE HELPDFLKGJJKSGE
anyway hopefully you enjoy the video!! if you did feel free to give the video a like and subscribe to the channel if you want to be updated on the other parts focused on Verity and November 9 coming out soon. But otherwise thanks again for watching and I'll see you in the next one :))

The thing about therapists "figuring out your faults" is all I needed to hear to know that she was probably awful at her job. Most people don't need that, they need emotional regulation skills and actionable life management strategies. Im studying marriage and family therapy, and my assessment of most relationships she writes is "these people should probably not be together, and they need to figure out themselves without fixing a red flag relationship as the end goal." It's like she got a book on relationship and sex therapy but only read the first half of each case study and used that as a blueprint 😂

CoHo seems to have a lot of repressed kinks, but she shit-talks people who openly admit they have kinks in one of her books (I think it was in Verity but I could be mistaken). It's really weird. I think she's just bricked-up but refuses to admit it, on top of all the internalized misogyny.

I made it like a chapter and a half into it ends with us cause I could not suspend disbelief and both characters upset me. The sheer number of red flags that Ryle showed on the rooftop scene alone. I couldn’t get behind Lily’s perspective because I wouldn’t have stayed for most of them if I saw a strange man doing his best to wreck some roof furniture I would have tip toed back down those stairs real quick. Also Lily hating her name but not considering a name change or even establishing a nickname if she wants to avoid the legal and financial hassle is wild to me. Her watching his tantrum and then pointing out what building she lives in was not believable. There is not a woman I know that would do that.

      @OopsIDidItAgainUh 9 месяцев назад +60

@@lotusmelody6108 It's not the age gap that's the issue but the power dynamics. I understand that me wording the age gap/power dynamics as "gross" might be wrong here, so I'll change it to "problematic" to better suit the context.
Lily is a 23 year old woman who is just starting her career after going through a rough childhood, whereas Ryle is a 31 year old rich neurosurgeon who has had a relatively better life, just with an exception of untreated trauma issues after accidentally killing his brother in his childhood. Even though both are adults, a 23 year old and 31 year old are at very different life and brain development stages. Sometimes, couples belonging to these ages can do just fine but mostly, it's not considered appropriate and isn't widely encouraged. i’ve noticed this tendency in coho books where she needs to make characters “multi-dimensional” but it never actually reads that way.
to me, a multi-dimensional person is someone who does things to better their community and/or relationships with themselves/others, which can sometimes lead to making what would, without context, be considered an amoral decision.
what coho does is either make a character do something uncharacteristic and label it as “dimensional”, or adding additional context out of literally no where to make a bad character seem good. like, taking in a dog or covering for some kid in a shop doesn’t make someone “multidimensional” if everything else they do in the book is shitty. it’s just kinda lazy.
edit: i also want to say that i think her representation of mental health is really damaging. creating a character who acts like a bitch to everyone and then acting like “this is what depression looks like!” is not okay. yes, depressed people are not incapable of being assholes, but when that’s the ONLY REPRESENTATION of depressed people in your books, that’s the message you’re sharing with your audience. additionally, sometimes her characters refuse treatment that, in the real world, would be impossible to refuse based on certain laws surrounding the circumstance. it just furthers my opinion that she doesn’t do enough research on the topic to be able to accurately represent it.

What I find crazy is some of the decision making. The bones of the book maybe has potential & I think there are some changes she could have made that wouldn’t have affected the overall plot much but would have been WAY more interesting/ believable. Ok, here we go....
    1. Alyssa meets Lily by APPLYING for a shop assistant job. It’s beyond ridiculous to think someone would just wander in off the street without even knowing it was going to be a flower shop and they’d immediately become bffs.
    2. Alyssa and Marshall don’t get pregnant at all, and we get to see more of their grief, their struggles, and tensions in their relationship because of this. This would add more complexity to her and Lily’s relationship when Lily gets pregnant.
    3. Lily’s business is NOT immediately successful. It’s in real financial difficulty at her lowest point and this makes her more dependent on Ryle and the cost of leaving him even greater. While he is in London the truth of her business’ struggle (along with the abuse) is told to Alyssa who then agrees to become partners with Lily revealing (for the first time) the true extent of how rich she is. It is then that they plan the new ‘goth’ flower shop direction (even though I thought that was stupid and no one would want steam punk flowers ffs, but whatever I’ll let that one slide). So it ends on a hopeful note for her business but not a clear cut success yet.
    4. Atlas isn’t a successful chef but is just working as kitchen hand, but with ambitions to become a chef. He lives in a modest apartment in a poorer area of town, but he is safe and warm unlike how he was when he met Lily. When Lily goes to his house as a refuge it is in contrast to what she has become used to with Ryle’s wealth, but that contrast is interesting as it’s in the small worn-out apartment (with sirens blaring outside) that she feels safe and her expensive apartment where she feels in danger.
    5. Can we get a kiss between Lily and Atlas while she is there too. Let Lily do something morally ambiguous for once for goodness sake! I’m thinking Lily kisses him, and he continues for a moment but puts a stop to it as he knows she is too emotionally fragile right then.
    6. FLASHBACKS INSTEAD OF ELLEN LETTERS PLEASE FOR GOODNESS SAKE
    7. Lily’s mother doesn’t understand why Lily would want to leave Ryle and doesn’t believe the abuse is as bad as Lily says. She makes excuses for him reflecting her relationship with Lily’s father. It’s hearing just how ludicrous her mother’s thinking still is (and how she was becoming the same) that makes her decide to leave Ryle. She can still have this great moment of empathy for her mother and understanding, but realise that ultimately, she is different and still has some grasp on reality and on how a woman should be treated.
    8. Ryle faces consequences for his abuse. Despite thinking that he would only harm Lily, he ends up verbally abusing a nurse at work who undermined him in front of a superior. This leads to him losing his job and hitting rock bottom. Although Lily doesn’t feel ready for him to have time with their daughter on his own, the book can still end on a hopeful note that by reaching rock bottom he is finally reaching out for help (e.g. support groups & therapy) and be able to one day be the dad he wants to be.
    9. lastly give at least one of the characters a normal name. Ryan or Kyle instead of Ryle and I’m happy.
But you know... she's sold millions of copies of books and I'm just out here commenting on youtube vids, so she can do whatever she wants. I just think these changes would have been soooooo much better.

These horrifyingly tragic backstories seem like they've been added to give 'flavour' to an otherwise very bland character but it just comes off as incredibly unserious and tacky the way she writes it.

Totally agree with what you said about her not actually dealing with difficult topics, but rather just using them flippantly.
Also am I supposed to root for characters who do awful things like drinking and driving? Cuz it's not gonna happen.

It’s like Colleen Hoover makes sure her characters never get what they desired
All your perfects: They can’t have a baby ever. She can’t have kids, he has a criminal record and they’re too broke for a private adoption.
It ends with us : He’s trauma means he’s abusive. Like it’s impossible for him to stop coz he’s not even aware when he’s doing it coz he blacks out.
    There’s no winning.
Also I’m ashamed to say I’ve read 4 out of the 5 books. Colleen is so popular and one of my really good friends recommended her. I kept on thinking maybe I’m the problem. I’m not. And if it’s possible, each book I read was worse than the one before it.
The order I read them: It ends with us, All your perfects, November 9, Verity
I’ll never get that time back 😖

It seems like none of her characters know what birth control is. Even the ones that are supposed to not want children when their books start.
I think CoHo just has a breeding/pregnancy kink but doesn't want to admit it.
