Thank you so much for this! One of my boys (Frenchy) got knocked around and ended up with ‘the ear’. We couldn’t do the drainage ourselves (tried and failed) so that was a task for the vet.
Once home, fashioned a tube/splint and applied it without issue. Your video makes it very clear, surprised the vet said it wasn’t necessary.

How often did you drain your ear? Did you use anesthesia? Was there any medicine?

I drained it a few times. The tube was the missing link. Very appreciative

Thank you so much for sharing this informative video on how to drain a hematoma. It was incredibly helpful! I do have an important question that I'd love to get some insights on. From the research I've conducted, it seems that there's a possibility of the hematoma recurring. Was this the case for you? If you could share your experience, or if anyone else reading this could provide their personal findings on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you again for taking the time to post this valuable video!
Thank you for your effort in making and posting this. I'm in a bad financial situation with an older dog that I do not want to risk GA surgery with. I have a tractor supply right down the street and can get all the supplies needed for under $10.
Hi. I have the same problem with my dog. Did you manage to cure your dog's ear?
@@paulherrero272, hi there. I was not able to get the splint to work, but I did end up getting an ear wrap to secure her ears flat to her head. Unfortunately for her it meant having to Lance/drain her ear twice 😔 She didn't like the wrap at first but she adjusted pretty quick. I've also been administering topical tea tree oil on the ear (10 drops tt / 2 tbsp evoo) and turmeric standardized curcumin supplement (100mg/10lb), both once a day. This is working well and she's healing up OK. It's taking time but it's working 😊
The tea tree is for prevention of ear infections while healing and the turmeric supplement is for inflammation. Both were advised by a homeopathic DVM.
If you choose to go the turmeric route, make sure it's a standardized curcuminoid extract with a black pepper additive, piperine. Just getting the kitchen spice won't guarantee the strength to be enough to work, and the pepper additive helps absorption and metabolism of the turmeric.
I just got done with the procedure on one of my dogs, will update you guys in a few days!
Good luck

If your dog experiences this, and he/she is not in good health or older, surgery is not an option. Correction of the ear hematoma is using an Auralsplint. No anesthesia and no surgical wounds. Also very cost friendly.
Leave it on for 3 days if anyone was wondering.

How long should we leave the ear wrap and tape on for before checking and recapping? 1 day? 2 days?
This is great advice but the dog I have is a stray that I rescued from heavy snow 8 years ago. He is difficult to handle and aggressive when I try to handle him. People tell me to have him put down but here I am 8 years later. Is there a way to make him sleep or calm so that I can do the procedure? Many thanks.
Thank you so much! This is the best idea for the taping! Lab/pointer so big ear. I cut a pill bottle diagonally and taped as you suggested with the pen. It is staying in place perfectly and am hoping this will solve the issue of it filling back up everyday! The advice I had was a wad of gauze on the inside, taped down. Was not ridged enough to keep it flat.

The tube did not work for my shepherd. She had it in for a week and as soon as they took it out her ear filled with blood again.
Yes but I have a golden and can't do that. Her ears are not upward
The pipe and tape method is exactly the missing link I was looking for, thank you! My girl’s hematoma has been refilling every couple days after each draining, compressing the ear against her head just doesn’t work.

Interesting. I have seen wrestlers and Jiu Jitsu fighters drain their own ear then use a magnet on both sides to keep it compressed and then tape it up so they don’t get cauliflower ear.
Loved this! Thank you....one question...how long should I keep it splinted?
Someone wrote keep the Splint on for 3 days
@@sylkola457 i was so worried about this.. but it was pretty obvious if it needed to be removed amd redone. let it stay for three days if you can but redo the process if you see it filling. cone on constantly! i also gave my babygirl benadryl each day to help her feel calm. google dosage on google.
Unfortunately, this did not work for me, My dog just shakes the home made splint off n matter how tight I tape it. May work for smaller dog but not for my female pit bull. The ear just keeps filling up again with blood.
It’s actually less time consuming to put a syringe on the needle. You can pull the plunger fast and it creates a suction then pull the plunger all the way out and it’s gonna drain much faster.
A syringe is not recommended for those outside the medical tech field. Possibility of accidental introduction of air into the hematoma is possible and can introduce infection.
Thank you
You're welcome
I tried to drain my Cane Corsos ear yesterday and she lost her mind… it was very hard
You can get a lamp shade to put around their head to stop them from scratching as well!
An inflatable collar is more comfortable.

How long do we keep the splint in the ear for
I'd say at least 3 days. If the ear starts to fill again, repeat the draining and leave it on for 3 more days, after the ear quits filling with fluid.
My friend. i recently donse this procedure. just now. i used medical tape to bound it with a cylindrical plastic just as you showed. few questions tho 1.) i taped it with reasonable preassure. is that enough? how will the blood circulation go? 2.) how long will i keep it bound. i am in diar need of your reply kind sir

What if the hematoma keeps filling up in the splint? And I have a Frenchie and I want to keep the integrity of his ear do I keep it wrapped with blood filling back up in there?
Use "French Letters" on Frenchies ears ?
How long do you keep the splint on
The auralsplint is held in location for 14 days consecutive. After this removal and observe for another four days to observe. Full treatment takes four weeks for all residual blood clot to be reabsorbed. Ear should be normal looking if done proper.
please help my dogs ears is my favorite. He had a huge hematoma took to vet gave me antibiotics and told me to use a cone. Now it’s rock solid still big but is not squishy like before can I still drain it
Nope.
Hoe long dose the tube stay on his ear
Until he shakes his head, about 10 minutes to a day. This is why they prescribe heavy sedation.
I LOVE the camera woman
How long would u leave the ear wrapped for.???
For as long as it takes until it stays up on its own, might be a few days might be a few weeks
How long do you have to leave it taped?
Till the ear doesn’t fill back up
Does anyone know if wrapping it tightly can cause any problems? My vet implied that I need to keep to very loose (I showed him the technique), and although I appointed it, it seems to be filling back up. I just want to know if any problems come from a tighter wrap
It needs to be tight or it will fill back up
Any suggestions for how to prevent the head shaking? My dog is a boxer and his giant head and force he uses when he shakes bc of the annoyance of anything on the ear is partially the cause of the refilling.. I tried a splint like you showed, but I think it was too small and the diameter not wide enough to keep the ear tightly pressed up, so I’ll try again w something bigger. I think I’ll have to take him to refrain it first 🫠
It does not work. The dog shakes and the tube falls out.
I'm guessing if I put that split in my dog's ear she would keep working at it until she got it off or shake her head until she got a hematoma in the other ear.
When draining the ear do you put the needle on the skin side or cartilage side? What is the best way to numb the area of the ear?
For me, the hematoma has always been on the backside of the ear
so you’re gonna put the syringe needle in at the base of the ear where the bulge is on the backside
don’t need to numb it but just use alcohol to clean the area
@LoveMyPups fab, thank you. Tried on my girl last night, but she got really stressed, so we didn't want to do too much. I think part of the reason is we didn't leave the needle in so it could drain. We had it drained at the vet's 2 weeks ago and cost me over £120 😭

120 isnt much compared to $800 AUD here in 🇦🇺
Its been 5 days now and it huge .. I was waiting for it to go down naturally, but its more painful to see no improvement yet .. May try this, but its not a fully detailed video to follow ...
I tried it looks like it was working @ first but what ended up happening was that my girls inside of the ear became irritated. It cut the inside a little and seem to have gotten infected so can’t keep it on now I even sanded the highlighter tub so it was nice and smooth. Don’t know what to do now 🤦🏻♀️. I was reading if you just leave it alone it will naturally absorb itself. Do u have any experiences regarding this ?
I doubt it fixes itself. Line outside of tube with cotton wool

Do not forget the inflatable collar for protection from the dog removing the ear splint.
I did this on my dog and the weight is making my dog ears flop downward rather then straight up. Is this an issue?
Try a lighter tube
Wouldn’t rubber bands work better than tape?
Might end up restricting blood flow

Sounds like others left it wrapped 3 days
How long before you can remove the splint and it not fill back up?
You have to check it if it heals- so what happened for you?
If you think a dog is about to develop a hematoma, do you think you can do this before the blood pocket starts to form to try to avoid it all together?
Absolutely
that’s not how it works- it happens for the dog scratching it - clean the ears
I hope someone can help. I followed this protocol and didn’t wrap the ear enough around the splint so the hematoma filled back up. I removed the splint and drained it again and of course splinted it again with a much better tape job. Still the bubble filled where it could. So again I performed the draining, and retaped the entire area on the splint. Now the bubble seems to be forming above the tape (toward the ear canal). At this point I’m leaving the splint as is, I have 2 more days according to whoever said to leave on for 3 days. I could really use advice! Thank you!
Keep draining and wrapping the entire ear
@@LoveMyPupsok thank you so much
I had the splint on for 3 days straight (after 4 days prior of draining 4 days in a row and re-splinting) and I just removed it. It stinks like clams and it’s so sore he went nuts as I was trying to unwind the tape. I’m so sad for him and frustrated! He an Australian Shepherd but his ears kindof remind me of floppy lab ears. All I can think is to just let it be for a while. Also seems to be filling right back up again. He’s so sore! Advice please??
Pendant ears can be laid down against the side of head and bandaged to stay. Be careful using a stretchy bandage to not cut off air supply or ability to eat and drink.
@@auralsplint I’m beside myself because the ear was severely affected by the 3 days in the splint and tape. The edges of his poor ear have lost hair and are still super crusty. I don’t know what to do because I can’t tape anymore, it will destroy his ear! I do not trust doctors, and I do not want them to cut his ear open or put him under anesthesia! At a total loss!

No as long as it’s new. I use a syringe needle
The initial penetration will sting, but eh pressure relief will happen instantly and he will be thankful for the pain relief. Aspiration takes about 30 seconds.

This happened to my dog and by the time we saw this video the ear was already hard and crumpled up wish I'd seen it sooner , he's now deaf ☹️
I am so sorry to hear that. My babies ear has started to get hard. And I just did the method yesterday. I lost my job a couple months back and already have my banked over drafted to the max or I would have taken him to the vet immediately. However, my jib job involves training time and not getting paid for the first half of the training. They will pay you once you proven that you want the job and that you can do the job. It's a job I have wanted for SO long. Anyway, I just wanted to give the back story on why some people just don't go straight to the vet. He is an older dog and has a lot of medical issues. And we were keeping up with him. Until now and this thing. That's what I am hoping to prevent him from going completely deaf in his ear. And I don't know if I'm a bad furless mom for not giving him up or finding a way. But the guilt is there and will ALWAYS be there. I just pray that what I am doing is right. And as soon as I get my first check, in August, he is going to the Vet. I don't care if his ear is fixed or not he is going to get a check up

Still have problems with itchy ears because of fungus but I try to keep them clean. I bought Ear cleaner liquid that fights with fungus and I clean his ears 2-3 days a week and I use Clotrimazole 1% cream.( both cleaner and cream I bought on Amazon very cheap compared to greedy veterinarians)I think draing dog ears even if you do this by yourself is pointless because you'll have to drain them over and over and over your whole life and it never stops. But once dog ears heal naturally and get like a cauliflower then they don't get hematoma again at leas my dog is not getting this anymore..Of course they don't look that pretty anymore but my dog is still beautiful and heppy hematoma free.

I had altered and fitted a pill bottle inside one another for an appropriate sized adjustable splint, sterilized them with peroxide then wrapped with surgical gauze- my dog is a 100lb black mouth cur.
