On the Shockwave topic: I did a rewrite of Dark of the Moon where Shockwave essentially takes over Sentinel Prime's role as the main villain. He was a friend of Optimus before the war and when the situation on Cybertron reached a deplorable point he made a deal in secret with Megatron, he would have the ability (just like in Animated) to change his appearance, having a gentler and friendlier appearance. with the Autobots and the classic appearance with the Decepticons. Towards the end of the story, which would be the equivalent of the Battle of Chicago, Shockwave would kill Megatron and try to kill Optimus, using the reasoning that "Cybertron will be more logical without the constant rivalry between you two."
This!!! Would have been FANTASTIC. I can see Shockwave slowly coming to this LOGICAL outcome throughout the films or trilogy if they built him up from TF1 and gave him that dynamic/conflict with prime would have been interesting to see as I loved his design in DOTM
His disguise could either look like Longarm, Sentinel or even his senator look. Imagine the reveal where instead of Sentinel's betrayal it's Shockwave unveilling himself, I can just imagine the shock on the Auyobot's faces as well as the audience.
Shockwave: The evil scientist/ruthless commander of the Decepticons, emphasizing logic over emotion, has turned him cold and mad. He is the 2nd most competent Decepticon, along with Soundwave. He is also the one Transformer to never have a bad design surprisingly.
I dunno about bayverse, honetly; it's on point, I'll give them that, but it's not a good design. I would argue that is even worse than the psp one from the first game...

In a way Shockwave is kinda similar to the Dc villan Brainiac they both usualy dont have much emotion in their voice and the only thing both characters care about is fulfiling their mission no matter the cost and knows how to manipulate everyone

In my AU, Shockwave starts out as a hermit. Working on his projects in isolation. He has several secret labs all across Cybertron that only he knows the locations of. They aren't catalogued anywhere, and every single one has a dommsday protocol in case they get found out. It is through hard work and tedium that Megatron and Soundwave manage to track him down and recruit him. Shockwave joins them through mutual benefit. He can continue his work, with access to more resources, and the Decepticons have the greatest scientific mind in all of Cybertron. Shockwave's loyalty to the Decepticon cause is nonexistent. His only loyalty is to himself and his endeavors. Throughout the story, he is constantly upgrading himself to the point that he's is completely immortal. He has protocols for death, where his conciousness is transfered to clones, a la the phoenix protocol in Rick & Morty. He is able to resist the control of Unicron, and becomes the final villain of the story. Worse than Motormaster, worse than Megatron, worse than Jhiaxus, worse than Tarn, worse than even Unicron himself. Shockwave is the ultimate threat. Because he is cold, calculating, sadistic, near invincible, and nigh omnipotent.
The difference between Shockwave and Megatron : Megatron can start a revolution, Shockwave cannot. But Shockwave *can* take one that already exists.
Shockwave, as some may say, “stands on business”
Shockwave's definitely my favorite Transformer of all time. The one trope I absolutely love is the evil lieutenants, but more specifically, the competent evil lieutenants. The idea that Shockwave is so competent that Megatron often trusts him to his own devices, and even rule in his stead, not only makes him insanely cool to watch operate, but it also adds to the suspense every time he and the heroes are on screen.

I am SO glad to have been recommended this video, I seldom comment on videos, but I felt like it was only logical I commented here, given how much Shockwave as a character means to me. As someone who is a science nerd, someone who loves mono-eyed robots, and someone who loves the color purple, it's no surprise to me that he turned out to not just be my favorite Transformers character, but also my favorite fictional character of all time. I could gush for hours about how I prefer him to be written in all honestly. Still I am so sorry for the essay, I tried to condense it as much as I feasibly could but I like talking about this guy way too much.
Design-wise, my favorite Shockwave is probably Animated with the High Moon games close behind. It's usually a toss-up though, TFA is usually my favorite robot mode, a menacing, gaunt figure that captures the mad scientist role that he usually occupies and in general I love the weird cryptid-y aesthetic, though I can find myself partially liking the High Moon games design more depending on my mood. Although, favorite alt-mode has to go to the High Moon games, I find myself usually thinking of him more as an aircraft, usually a sleek jet like a stealth bomber than as something like a tank, seems too blunt for him in my eyes and a jet fits with the theme of air superiority the 'Cons usually have in addition to making sense for a logic-minded individual, though I cannot deny that some of his tank designs look really cool even if it's not my preferred alt-mode. Probably also has something to do with me just liking aircraft more than tanks.
Personality-wise, I'd say I like the Marvel version of Shockwave the most, Bob Budiansky absolutely had the right idea to make Shockwave essentially an evil Spock, it's a personality I find inseparable from Shockwave's design because it fits the design so well. One moment that made Marvel Shockwave for me is when he found out Cyclonus was going to get him killed in the future, in a fit of madness he killed Cyclonus, strung up his remains as a trophy on his wall, and all but shut down, going completely mad and dropping any pretense of logic and being willing to let the time-space continuum suffer for it because no matter what he chooses he dies, so what does it matter anyway? This madness gets to the point where RAVAGE had to convince him to finally see things rationally. (Granted, Ravage is a very smart kitty, but the idea that Shockwave went so insane that a literal cat had to convince him to snap out of it is extremely funny to me.)
Marvel Shockwave is probably the biggest influence for how I write Shockwave in general just from what subtle things I see in him, I've simply taken those little things and run with them, I love the idea of Shockwave as someone who relies so much on logic partially because he cannot begin to fathom the emotions that he feels no matter how strongly he may feel them, and the emotional reactions of others may leave him baffled and overwhelmed. Odd as it may be to say, Shockwave is a character I find myself kind of relating to, relying on a more mechanical mindset partially because the unfathomable complexity of emotions, that's at least what I get from him.
On another note, I can't wait to see what else Earthspark and Skybound have planned for him, Earthspark Shockwave is absolutely maniacal from what I've seen whereas we still have yet to see enough from Skybound Shockwave to make proper judgement, however, we do know he does not like the Quintessons, which is reminding me of the original Five Faces of Darkness treatment which has me stoked because I love the concepts featured in it like Shockwave being an older Cybertronian. (love the way the FFoD treatment described him as well, they really liked making it apparent he was old, I love it, I'm still so mad they scrapped it because his toy was off-shelves.. Man, what could have been...)

Reminds me of in IDW Chaos when all the deceptions combine to form the Decepti-God because of their unity for the deception cause. All the Decepticions apart from Shockwave who watches the carnage from a distance. Shockwave was never a Decepticon, he was on his own side and joined the Decepticons to pursue his own goals

oooh ok i like this angle...im usually all for the loyalist shockwave angle and i wanted to find a way to fuse that with current interations and i think you made a pretty good one...he'd still be head scientist but also extremely loyal to megs and giving him advice on how to stay rational
@kelp6856 Ty. I honestly think that is why Megs is able to lead better than Shockwave. Shockwave is logical but unemotional. But people are often not logical. And are very emotional. And Megatron knows how to manipulate emotional and illogical people. Via charisma and fear. Things which Shockwave does not generally know how to do. And if he is as illogical and unemotional as he says he is, then he should be intellectualy honest enough to admit that to himself. Thus, the best path is to let him lead so he can focus on his research. Or just manipulate and advise behind the scenes. Be the power behind the crown and not have a constant bullseye on your back. What Soundwave often does and the smarter versions of Starscream often try to do.
2:44 what really sucks about the live action shockwave is if they wanted him to just be a big brute they failed them selves.
Because the game set him up perfectly for that in the game dotm a prequel to the movie the big boss at the end is shockwave and your Optimus at the hight of his power.

I see it as the DOTM game (and the comics) tried to compensate for the movie's disappointing screen time with him. Which tends to be a trend with Bayverse IMO.

Tecnically shokwave Is the 4rt in command of the decepticons. The second in command Is starscream and the third in command Is Soundwave.
G1 cartoon Shockwave is honestly hilarious compared to the rest. He's pretty much a (mostly) die hard Megatron loyalist there. Honestly second in command might even be possible considering the importance of Cybertron to the Decepticons.

Shockblast is by far my favorite version of the character, and just one of my favorite Transformers characters overall. He is an absolute monster and I love him so much. I have a very distinct memory of the first time I saw his debut episode as a kid and just being absolutely enamored by how he showed up, broke out of prison, and just fucking murdered and demolished his way through everything until Megatron sent an extraction team. He meant BUSINESS. Bro killed more Transformers on screen than I think anyone else in the franchise besides maybe Bayverse Optimus. Him 1-shotting an energon tower that goes into low orbit, and actually almost killing Optimus really just cemented him as one of my favorite villains. I also adore his rivalry with Wingsaber.
Shockwave's long been one of my favourite 'cons.
I think my favourite take on the character is probably the IDW one. My favourite design for him is the High Moon version, but with the yellow optic from the comic take on the same. Cam on Gamer Edition, do Shockwave already.
Something I feel really separates the Decepticons from the Autobots is that, with the former, there's definitely a specific roster you need to have if you're making a team of them. You need Megatron the leader, Starscream the traitor, Soundwave the loyalist, and then you have Shockwave the emotionless mad scientist. With the Autobots you only really have Optimus and Bumblebee as the "must-haves" if you're making a cast of them. Anyone else is entirely optional 🤔
I think that's more about the chain of command being different.
I find that the Autobots tend not to have as much of a strict hierarchy. Like the Autobot second-in-command could be Jetfire, Ultra Magnus, Prowl, Jazz, Ironhide, etc. But of course, Optimus or any Autobot leader tends to listen to the advice of his counsel no matter who they are. The idea tends to be "we all have a part to play - there are no small parts just small actors." (At least if you're not looking at Armada and Energon.)
The Decepticons are very clear in their hierarchy and it seems to matter if anyone steps out of line. But at the same time, ironically, that leads to a lot more power struggles.
It's a whole topic I've thought about.

Personally, Shockwave is my favorite character in the franchise. He’s cold, calculating, and deathly efficient. My favorite design has to be the Animated version because of how fun he his to doodle and sketch, but my favorite Shockwave hands-down has to be Prime. He literally tries to kill Starscream, he’s got a threatening aura around him all the time, and whenever he shows up to the battle field, you can’t help but think “Damn… It’s about to go down.”

Tbh Shockwave is genuinely interesting, his lack of emotion makes for a model decepticon. Besides starscream Shockwave is my second favorite decepticon, him and starscream both embody the 2 sides of being a decepticon. One cold, calculating and emotionless, while the other (starscream) is a egocentric narcissist that lies and deceives to get what he wants. And that makes up what a decepticon truly is, he's an amazingly written cybertronian who deserves respect 🙏🏾
To me as a design Bayverse Shockwave is my favorite, but as a character TFP Shockwave is most logical choice

I like Shockwave being a loyalist but only to idw Megatron because he’s a menace and WoC/FoC Megatron because he’s a threat to everything. It’s probably more logical to follow the crazy guy that can body a god than to try and overthrow him

Btw, Relax Alex has the most engaging video essays. Because it’s not just him ranting and explaining. He cracks jokes, had funny editing, simplifies things but doesn’t talk down or think he’s superior. I feel like you could get a lot of inspiration from his videos

Transformers prime shockwave my favorite mainly because he's not loyal because he believes in a cause he's loyal because he knows the deceptons will let him further his research by any means with no hindrance, no Do the ends justify the means, just "i Want to further cybertronian research with no roadblocks, no morals and no emotion"
The Bayverse version definitely could've been used better but the design is spectacular. Looks powerful and menacing. His style is completely cybertronian no trying to blend in on earth

I think the Transformers Prime version of Shockwave is my favorite. I got the impression that Shockwave is a scientist, or at least thinks of himself as one, but doesn't believe he's able to do efficient research with the ethical and legal restrictions that would have likely been placed on him outside of the Decepticons. He doesn't go out of his way to be malicious and has a pretty good understanding and professional relationship with Megatron, who allows him to conduct his experiments without interference provided he gives Megatron some useful information, technology, etc. to use against the Autobots and other enemies. He is cold, scientific logic taken to a terrifying extreme.

My favorite Shockwave is Animated. The design and performance really sold it. Especially the plot twist involving him. I really like Cyberverse and Prime, there just not my favorite. The Marvel version was also great. I just prefer a loyal Shockwave to someone who wants to take over. Marvel did do a good job though, saying that he didn't technically want power, he just wanted better leadership.
Shockwave DID in fact at one point have a normal head. But it was replaced as punishment
this is only like, a little out there, but i like the idea/irony of shockwave being illogical (i said the word). the cold,logical, calculative version of him is cool, but i kind of prefer the emphasis of him to have a bit of hubris, like a sort of frankenstein reference of him playing god,with him not knowing what the fuck he's doing, and THAT being the threat. i also prefer him being more of a foil to starscream, as both are stated to be scientists and have some interesting feats in their appearances, but starscream is more "emotional" while shockwave follows "logic". also, both are not completely loyal to megatron, and are more than willing to backstab and take his position. but again, that's just me.

As much as i like the loyal shockwave i definitely would like to see a shockwave that is a foil to megatron like the early marvel comics, he just seems like a more genuine threat that megatron should be more vigilant on rather than starscream

2:05 I completely agree. I think Shockwave is better when he has his own ulterior motives that clashes with Megatron and only pretends to be loyal until he believes he’s ready to take over as leader instead of a being grade A suck-up to Mr. Bucket-head himself. I’ve always found the G1 cartoon portrayal to be quite inferior and less interesting than his G1 Marvel comics counterpart. And I’m starting to get really tired of these writers always going off of the G1 cartoon version of him. I think the only one that tried to stick to the Marvel comics version of him was in Cyberverse where they slightly hinted at Shockwave possibly overthrowing Megatron when an opportunity arose. Other than that no other cartoon has attempted to go off of Shockwave’s Marvel characterization, which is a shame but who knows maybe the next cartoon can possibly take a crack at Shockwave’s Marvel characterization.
I hate to break it to everybody but it's more like the only there are a lot of other decepticons that are still loyal to Megatron which is soundwave shockwave and the combaticons
Personally I love tfp Shockwave and IDW Shockwave.
I love the idea of him being a mad scientist loyal to the Decepticon cause only because it fits with his own goals and not because he actually believes in the cause, using the resources at his disposal to do absolutely disgusting experiments for his own personal agenda.
I have written him once, basically rewrote a tfp episode. I made him so messed up and I love him that way
i've grown a weird love/dislike relationship with Shockwave. I'm a person who's stand is what could be considered moral goodness, such as no killing and no harm to anyone, but I also hold disdain for authority and biases that especially prevent cognitive reasoning, such as stereotypes and ignorance under rose tinted glasses. Shockwave (ever since he was made to be the logic and science driven mech we all know and love) consequentially is the type of character that doesn't gel well with me in terms of qualities I'd admire. Yet idk why, he's my favourite even though the resume of IDW and those like that iteration make me wanna take a break from transformers

Unfortunately, my favourite of all the Shockwaves is TFP Shockwave, who i swear everytime I rewatch the show I'm disappointed when he shows up cus I know he's here for fan service more than actually being a character. If TFP had been better made? Project Predacon wouldn't have been the only thing he'd been doing
Edit: I've done a bit of self-assessment and I think it's an opposites attract situation. Either that, or I use his perspective as a moral compass and identify with him because possible autism
