I like the G1 comic version the best. King Grimlock was stupid, but Hi-Q explains it all just after Grimlock changes to his powermaster form, “Grimlock, like Scorponok struggles to walk the line between good and evil” and his profile actually states that he detests the weak, but hates bullies, which is why he chooses the autobots over the Decepticons, so he can bully the bullies.
FOC/Aligned Grimlock has such a interesting and understanding backstory on the character of Grimlock. (Note: I consider FOC and TF: Prime/Aligned to be in the same universe. RID's Grimlock is a separate character that adopted a "Grimlock" name.)
As we know, Grimlock and Optimus have such different methods on how to defeat the Decepticons. While Prime favors caution, Grimlock firmly believes on "rushing in before the enemy can react". The only similarity between the two of them was their desire to end the war and bring freedom. Prior to his experimental torture, he and the other members of the Lightning Strike Coalition were very well known disregarding Prime's more cautious decisions on warfare. Often disobeying orders and as we see in FOC, abandoning their position.
The Aligned comics provided insight as to "why" he abandoned his post. It turns out Grimlock has suspicions the Decepticons were getting their supplies from an unknown source. This suspicion was largely due to the endless swarms of Decepticon attacks which is considered weird given how Energon supplies should be low on both sides. He sent his scout, Swoop, to locate this source at the Sea of Rust. When Swoop never respond back, he and his team abandoned their post to find Swoop. Grimlock and his team eventually found the new Energon source and Shockwave's experiments. But they were ultimately captured and experimented on. Grimlock remainrf concious throughout the entire process, hence why in the FOC game, he tells Swoop, "I remember everything".
After their experimental redesign/torture, they became outcasts. While they wear the Autobot insignia, they know they are being judged for being different. They were being treated different. Shockwave's experiment changed them. While it did upgrade them into more powerful versions of themselves, they weren't being treated like "true Autobots". Even after the war, they feel like outcasts. Snarl in that Beast hunters comic even said that while they can transform into their robot forms like everyone else, if you look at them compared to everything around them, they are just hiding their true selves. Their "Dinobot" forms.
It's a real interesting adaptation to the character. He's an Autobot who wants to do right. Even if his decisions are arrogant and reckless. He and his team are the Autobot outcasts who felt rejected because of their new changes. I really wished we got to see Grimlock in TF Prime animation. The Dinobots would have made a great addition to the hunt for finding Shockwave as well as the Autobots being leaderless. Seeing him fight a Predacon in animation would have been such a epic moment for Transformers and non-Transformers fans.
When we got Predacons in TF Prime, I was praying for some dinobot action! But alas, we did get that aligned comic tie in, which made me feel better 😂
I thought 2015 RID Grimlock had his memory wiped because he was such a threat to society after the war and the colour change and Decepticon logo was the work of the messed up post-war government

As a fan of the Bayverse they really did the dinobots dirty in TLK, i wished they did more with them and have them learning to speak, heck i would like to even see Nemesis vs Grimlock, where they duck it out and both end up badly damaged.
4:04 I can totally relate to FOC Grimlock when it comes to speaking, It's like i know what to say, but when i talk i either stumble on my words or i pause for a moment to come up what else to say, i never noticed it until i got older and it's annoying.
It's extra insulting if you know what The Last Knight was originally supposed to be like. It's like a Justice League vs Zack Snyder's Justice League situation....except the good version didn't get filmed. The Last Knights (yes, plural) was supposed to actually be Grimlock's movie basically. The Dinobots were the last knights. They would've gotten a significant physical and intellectual upgrade from communing with Primus through Teletran 1 on the Quintesson's planet and shed their protoforms and appeared closer to their G1 look. Grimlock would've been revealed as Volcanicus Prime and would've basically been like Leonidas in 300 if he were a Transformer. I think Gerard Butler was even almost the voice of Grimlock. Basically you almost got exactly what you wanted....and probably a lot more because the plot sounded INSANE. I think it got nixed because it focused so much on the Transformers (like that's a bad thing) and it kind of hinged on getting at least Shia LaBeouf back and possibly even Megan Fox. And brought the whole series back full circle to things in the original 2007 movie. It legitimately sounded like it could've been the best Michael Bay movie..

@@Achieme You don't know the half of it. As a big fan of at least Transformers 1, Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction...it really frustrates me badly that they kneecapped themselves like this. Everything about it sounded perfect. There's probably not one issue with The Last Knight as it exists that the original intended version either didn't have or fixed or made better somehow. It even retroactively made the previous ones make more sense. Massive missed opportunity..
@@davidsavage5630 Same because as much as i love AOE it really messed up the previous movies. I had high hopes for TLK thinking it would be just as dark DOTM and AOE but they were all over the place I even disliked how they handled Nemesis prime
@@Achieme Unicron was not going to be Earth but his own separate thing like the animated movie. Optimus would travel past the planet Lithone (the planet Unicron devours at the beginning of the animated 86 movie) while taking the seed away. He sees Unicron preparing to eat it and goes to the planet to try to help but is devoured along with it. Unicron would then turn him into Nemesis Prime and send him back to Earth with Trypticon with many seeds to seed Earth into a metal world since Unicron can't devour organic matter. The Quintessons send Cyclonus and the Sharkticons to capture Marky Mark's daughter and her boyfriend. They take them to the planet Quintessa where they're incarcerated into a massive alien prison complex. There they meet Sam, Carly (Carly is pregnant), Sam's parents, Mikaela and many imprisoned Transformers. Autobots and Decepticons plus humans who have had a lot of contact with the Transformers. I think Lennox and Epps would be there too. The Quintessons send a message to the government taunting them about capturing the daughter and boyfriend...which everyone rightfully thinks is fishy. The Dinobots have taken Lockdown's ship because it was originally theirs and they get the message too but they get another message hidden under the other frequency that's coming from a different part of Quintessa. They go and pick up Mark Wahlberg, Bumblebee, Hound, Drift and Crosshairs and fly to Quintessa to the source of the hidden signal. When they get there they find out that two other Dinobots, Sludge and Snarl, sent it. Sludge and Snarl take them to Alpha Trion who has been hiding Teletran 1 there on a remote part of the planet. Through Teletran 1 they commune with the essence of Primus who restores their memories. They were the Guardians of the All-Spark and were with it when Megatron caused it to crash on Earth. They took the forms of dinosaurs (overlayed with a realistic hologram of a real dinosaur to disguise what they are...like the cop driving Barricade or the pilot in Blackout) to search for it as undetected as possible and try to repair themselves. They realize they were purposely sent from Earth (which is why the daughter and boyfriend were captured) so Unicron can devour it because the only thing that can destroy Unicron is the All-Spark and it still exists inside Galvatron but only Volcanicus Prime can re-extract it from Galvatron's body and harness it. This goes into them staging a massive prison break to free all of the Transformers and humans the Quintessons have locked up. Even the Decepticons (this makes sense later). Then it's a race back to Earth aboard the Dinobot's and Lockdown's former ship to save Earth from Unicron while being pursued by Cyclonus and the Sharkticons. That's about half of it..

The Marvel version of Grimlock - he's not really pretending to be dumb, he has a problem with his speech pattern, which is mentioned in the comic.
For me my favourite versions of grimlock are
1. Cyberverse (as u mentioned his bruce banner like persona in robot mode and crazy barbaric in dino mode.)
2. IDW (coz of the journey he goes through to control his rage )
3. FOC (as a guy who opposed optimus's ideology and thought him to be weak).
G1 would have been on this list of it weren't for the 86 movie and S3. I wish he ate and consumed wheelie that annoying little autobot death would been so much satisfying. Seriously I am still sad😢 that they killed my favourite S1 characters in the first scene (RIP ironhide, ratchet, prowl and brawn), i loved a lot.

I actually do like the idea that Grimlock becomes a tyrannical leader of the autobots that takes things too far. It lives up to his alt form's namesake.
Question about the Marvel comics iteration tho; did he ever realize that he took things too far during his time as leader?
Grimlock is my favorite character in... well anything. My reasoning for this is because of not only his status as a fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus barbarian, but because of his characterization. Grimlock really feels like a character that has untapped potential. If I were to make my own OFFICIAL take on the King, I would try to make him like a mix of IDW '05 and Fall of Cybertron. He was originally a Kaonial gladiator who moved to Iacon in order to join the Elite Guard. And then when the war broke out, Grimlock elevated from being a lowly Autobot shocktrooper to Wrecker to leading a team of his own. However, he of course has the classic Grimlock rage issue. And unlike Fall of Cybertron, he was born with a speech impediment instead of having a damaged brain. Which leads into a mission that leads them into Shockwave's claws. He and his team become the Dinobots, with Grimlock actually mauling Shockwave, giving him his iconic lack of a left arm and mono-optic. But I do feel like at one point, Grimlock would evolve, pardon the paleontology pun, to let go of his contempt for Optimus. And after Optimus joins the AllSpark, Grimlock would actually be granted leadership. Unlike the original Marvel comic, Grimlock has learned how to be a good leader, being more of a patient knight. But hey. That's just my two cents.

My Personal take on Grimlock and the dinobots would be a story where him and the dinobots were the first ever combat robots created by the quintisonts in order to conquer planets. the Dinobots would do this by taking the forms of the most powerful creature's on the planet and conquering it for their creators it, this is why they look far more robotic and primitive than other Transformers like bumblebee, starscream or Ironhide, it was only when the Dinobots became sentient and rebelled that they ran from the quintsonts to earth 66 million years ago and took the forms of Dinosaurs( their most powerful forms yet) and fought off their attackers securing their freedom, with their new sentient personalities formed they took a liking to how peaceful earth was until the KT Mass extinction at the end of the cretaceous forced them into stasis pods where they were found and reawkened by the decpticons who would try to manipulate them to fight against the autobots but would fail resulting in them not being entirely a part of the autobot team but as Ancient Stoic Warriors who watch over earth and the autobots and interfere when battle's get serious.
As not just a Grimlock fan but also an aspiring paleontologist, I've waiting for a video like this on Grimlock, I like you Identified strongly with his character in all the ways you talked about except with me I look at the evolution of Grimlock as a character not just through the lenses of a writer but through the lens of how humanity's Knowledge and cultural depictions of Dinosaurs have changed throughout time. During the 80's when Transformers was created Dinosaurs were throughout to be evolutionary failures and brutish lizards that were dumb and unsophisticated, much like how the G1 dinobots are portrayed, but the reality is quite the opposite Dinosaurs were they most successful animal group to ever live rulling the earth for 165 million years no other animal group has done that and today we still have birds witch are living dinosaurs in the flesh but all of this was shelved from the public eye during the 80's because people didn't really care much about Dinosaur science, that was of course until Jurassic park came along and caught the public up to speed on what kind of animals dinosaurs really were and through the fall of cybertron version of Grimlock, and the IDW Grimlock, were I see this two conflicting ideas about Dinosaurs fighting each other.
I obviously don't expect robot Dinosaurs to be scientifically accurate Dinosaurs but in FOC Shockwave states that the reptilian, Mesozoic life on earth is primitive and unintelligent yet in game we play as grimlock as if he's this unleashed, unchained, beastly Apex predator like the real Tyrannosaurus rex, a quick fact for you T rex was actually one of the smartest Dinosaurs credited in the fossil record with it's brain not only being super big but the actual brain case itself being similarly shaped in functionality to both dogs, and early chimps witch some of the smartest animals to ever exist witch is the biggest reason why I've always hated the dumb, caveman take on Grimlock. This take is not only limiting to his character but it also reflects an inaccurate perception of Dinosaurs, and does a disservice to the amazing discoveries being made on these animals to this day, instead of paying tribute to dinosaurs which I feel the Dinobots should do instead. In the IDW Comic Series maximum dinobots Grimlock is once again shown as an awesome robotic recreation of a primordial apex predator, but scorponok tells him that Dinosaurs went completely extinct and that the form Grimlock takes is a quote “unchanging beast” when Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the most evolutionarily successful dinosaurs Surviving right up until the KT mass extinction (asteroid that hit the gulf of Mexico 66 million years ago).
Looking at both FOC and IDW comics I can’t help but think if the Writers had at least a little knowledge about dinosaurs and what paleontology knows about them it would have greatly improved the quality of the story’s were Grimlock is presented as his furious self, witch is why I really don’t have any issues with the Marvel Grimlock his smart calculated tyrannical nature fits the animal that he takes the form of not to say that it doesn’t in FOC or IDW either I just think it would greatly benefit the character. That said, you actually forgot to bring up one Version of Grimlock that I think is the most interesting and that is the shattered glass version of Grimlock. This was created as A complete inversion to the dumb caveman Grimlock, Grimlock was a all knowing, all intelligent, Atrificial intelligence whose Violence circuts overran his logic ones witch was why megatron(good in this world) deactivated him only for him to be found by emperor Optimus prime and put to battle in his T rex form where he would eventually gain a robot mode and a great sense of humor and sas, however when grimlock as intelligent as he is does loose control he will transform into a T rex and give into his lust for carnage anger and destruction, I don’t know if I prefer this version over normal Grimlock but he definitely interesting to consider.

I always assumed that for the 20 years between G1's cartoon and the Movie, Grimlock and the other Dinobots had an entire life that's their own. Any change in the characterization may have been perfectly acceptable. Like Being more personable and funny, could be growing up with Spike and then Spike's kid Daniel, leaving him with more interaction with kids and being a friendlier person.
I've always thought that the reason G1 Grimlock and the other dinobots have a personality change is something that Wheeljack did. in universe of course

My first Transformers OC was a Decepticon-deflecting Dinobot named Stagger who transforms into an Allosaurus. Loved what Megatron fought for, being used as a pack mule in the energon mines and all, but as soon as he witnessed Megatron corrupt the Decepticon cause, he deflected but didnt want to join the Autobots either. He just wanted the ability to choose, and for once in his life, he gets it.. and chooses to avoid war

Nice video, really enjoyed hearing you talk about the different iterations of Grimlock. One of the few transformers books I have is a Grimlock-centered comic from IDW called King Grimlock, where Grimlock gets transported into a medieval type of world by humans that inhabit it to help defeat a sorcerer called The Golden One. I really love the story and enjoyed Grimlock’s chemistry with the human character, Arko. The story really shows an inner-feeling of Grimlock’s I haven’t seen much of before.
Loved the fall of cybertron campaign, when you take over grimlock it’s Epic!

As much as I love Grimlock, I do wish that the other Dinobots got some development too. I think IDW did try, but it came at the cost of separating the team.
Grimlock kinda reminds me of Daryl Dixon, from The Walking Dead in the away, he doesn’t let anyone get close, and he lets people underestimate him but in actuality, he’s a fierce confident warrior.

Well. Let me correct the Marvel comics interpretation a little bit.
The Dinobots were not woken by Shockwave directly. They were woken up "by the Ark" so that they could defend it from Shockwave.

Believe it or not the Dinobots are the reason I chose the Space Wolves in 40k.
Both hang in the balance between powerful allies and so anti-authoriative that people wonder how the leaders justify tolerating them.
Then every now and then you get to see just how they are very much a devil at your side is preferable to a devil in your path they are.
Admittedly I've seen so many versions of the Dinobots that my mind has seeminly headcanonned a version that I can't remember if it's actually happened or if it is just head canon, I find similarities in the Fall of Cybertron game and current comics but I'm sure I watched or read this around 2000 - am I going mad or just headcanonned it and the similarities are making me think it actually happened?
The Dinobots were a special forces unit of tanks and an aircraft on Cybertron called the Dynobots, already fighting before Optimus Prime was even Orion Pax.
The Dynobots got captured and mentally crippled during torture but were long forgotten by the time of Optimus Prime and the Fall of Cybertron, they escaped in the chaos, their escape vessle made a homing attachment to The Ark as it passed by but because their vessel had inferior performance it fell behind, arrived late and crashed to boot.
The rough arrival crippled the Dynobots further and they lost access to their transformations.
Both the Autobots and Decepticons picked up the Dynobot's arrival and went to investigate, the Autobots arrived first and started repairing the Dynobots but the Decepticons arrived and the Autobots were forced to use simplistic skeletal structures to speed up the Dynobots recovery but had to leave to fight the Decepticons, their Witwicky comrade entered his homework disk - cue dinosaur bones and freestyle robotic dinosaur armour - The Dynobots woke up and joined the battle but showcased the damages they'd suffered as much as their power.
Mental disabilities - They're cunning but they are mentally crippled in intelligence and they suffer overwhelming rage issues when they recognise Decepticons that they've encountered on Cybertron, on top of that they remember themselves before they were captured so they are aware something is missing.
Speach impediments - Only Grimlock can speak but his processors struggle with sentence structure.
Incompatibilities in technology - The Ark cannot overwrite the Dynobot's repairs and sees the Dynobot's current state as healthy so they only get marginal improvements after suffering damage in specific areas which encourages them to be extreme in combat.
Did such a storyline exist?
It sounds like the first part is IDW but the rest I don’t think I’ve ever seen a storyline like that. Maybe Dreamwave? Im not as familiar with Dreamwave’s G1 but it could be that one.

there's countless other versions that exist like Dreamwave, RiD2001, shattered glass, etc. Not much for me to comment on there that I didn't before, I think I just want to make sure i have something to say instead of wasting the viewer's time (as much as possible).
