I think my biggest issue with the film is that it feels like twenty or so minutes were cut from the film at the last second. The opening with Transit I think would help the film so much, especially with Optimus' character. Actually seeing Prime looking at a hologram of autobots being killed on Cybertron while he can't do anything about it works really well as a way to begin Prime's character arc in the film. Also because of the removal of this scene, the word "Decepticon" is never said once which is wild.
Also Scourge, while a cool design and having some cool moments (like that scene on the Maximal planet where he's walking through the forest) is just kind of a nothing villain. We know there was a cut backstory for him and that would've tied in with Scourge's mask falling off later in the film. I have no idea why they cut that.
I also feel like there was just a bunch of small stuff cut. While not confirmed I'm like 99% sure the scene where Scourge talks to Unicrn about the Trans Warp kep was supposed to be longer. There's that shot of him just floating on Earth while Battletrap and Nightbird watch and it feels like they were supposed to say something. Maybe a joke about Scourge just floating there, maybe a comment about how they've never seen Unicron, idk something. Also I'm like 99% sure the original intention behind those two is that they were Decepticons at one point. Since their pre-release CGI renders all had Decepticon logos on them. I think this may have been a scrapped plot point with Scourge's whole corruption thing. Like maybe when he killed some Decepticons (to get that faction symbol seen at the beginning of the film) he corrupted these two? Idk just feels weird.
Wheeljack just didn't have to be in the film at all. Man did nothing. I know he's the guide in Peru but that wasn't originally going to be the case since you can see his vehicle form in New York in behind the scenes shots. So they just cut a ton of his stuff and said "idk have him say one line about being a guide and then don't really do anything after that." Felt very Bayformers to have a character show up, say one or two things and then do nothing.
The biggest surprise in this movie was that they showed Stratosphere's robot mode three different times. Honestly thought it was gonna be a one time thing lmao.
It's a fun film but it really needed to be longer. Not Bayverse film long but something like an extra fifteen or so minutes would've done this film a lot of favors. Also not a fan of the G.I.Joe reveal at all. It just feels like Hasbro forcing them into the Transformers films in order to get audiences to get interested in G.I.Joe since they've failed three seperate times at making G.I.Joe film franchises. If I remember correctly, people weren't really all that hyped when IDW suddenly threw in G.I.Joe, MASK, ROM, etc into the TF comics so it's really surprising they're doing this again. They really want their own cinematic universe lmao.
Overall I'd give the film like a 7/10. It's better then all the Bay films imo but Bumblebee is still the best live action TF film.

So... the 86 Transformers movie is my favorite TF movie. I think it's great. But this is not something we need. It would be cheesy, out of place, and if they were ever going to play that song in a new film, it'd likely be a modernized cover or remix, which would be great, but the OG fans would throw a hissy fit. Plus, I'd prefer that we actually get it during a fight between Optimus and Megatron, personally.

They set up so many awesome things that set the groundwork to create an actually good Transformers cinematic universe, yet I can't help but feel like they missed their opportunity with this one, backtracking and making some of the same mistakes as the Bayverse. In short, this was a good movie, but considering the fact that this was possibly their last chance to create a legit universe out of the Transformers series using the likes of greats like Peter Cullen, yet they fumbled the bag, I can't help but feel massive disappointment.

  • @HenryLouis21
    @HenryLouis21 11 месяцев назад +9

I did like how the movie handled the Maximals being on Earth and explained their connection to human history. I liked that they did not say that the Maximals were responsible for the Nazca Lines in Peru and that it was all the work of human ingenuity because I feared that they would go into Ancient Alien territory. Either way, it's still annoying seeing people trying to tie human history to Cybertron. Other than that, this movie is mid.
I am glad that they focused on someone else that is not Bumblebee this time but killing Bee off seems rather cheap to me since that took away some impact later in the future if they decided to kill Bee off in a meaningful way and make it permanent. Optimus in this movie acts like a violent and cynical asshole as well as a selfish idiot. I get what they were doing with giving him an arc in this film but they could've done that without making Optimus a selfish asshole. I was confused about them saying that Earth was just a pitstop for them to regroup but that is far from true, Optimus sent Bee to Earth to establish a base where they could operate and more Autobots would come, it wouldn't really be a pitstop if Optimus asked Bee to put up a base for them. And as far as we're concerned, not a lot of Autobots have arrived on the planet so this desperation to return home seems out of nowhere.
I am glad I am not the only one saying that this movie was the wrong film to follow Bumblebee on because going back to the large-scale threats like Unicron seemed rather very soon because Bumblebee promised more grounded and emotional storytelling so when we got something like Unicron, it was earned and we are attached to the characters. I don't think they can stop someone like Unicron again because the threat of him is diminished if they were able to defeat him the first time around. It seemed like Steven Caple Jr was too excited to shove a lot of aspects of TF lore into one movie. I like his work on this film and I'm glad he got to make it like I would if I got the chance to write a Transformers movie but this seemed a little too much to do in a sequel to Bumblebee after getting a coming-of-age story of a teenager meeting robot alien. The sequel should have been the Autobots trying to survive and await more Autobots to regroup and strategize a plan while hiding from humanity but Decepticons find their way to Earth and it's their job to keep the planet safe.

GI Joe nowadays is a charisma black hole. Awful movies, nobody cared about "Snake Eyes" and the brand hasn't been relevant since the 90's (I would dare say, since the 80's), it definitely will drag down Transformers if the go full crossover for the sequel. That wish of Hasbro of making a "Revolution universe" / "Hasbro Universe" has been looming menacingly, like a vast predatory bird, and I don't like it, it didn't happen back when they made the first GI Joe movie and it will not happen now.
After watching the movie I read some articles that said they had to cut some scenes from the movie and to this day I wonder why they did it as the movie feels way too short. The Transit scene, some of the Rhinox, Cheetor, Arcee and Wheeljack dialogue, the hologram scene from Airrazor... I don't get it. And because it feels too short, the GI Joe scene feels forced, because it ended on a high note with the parallel speech. I also feel that the "resurrection" of Mirage should've been left in the air, and not 100% confirmed he's alive.
It is a good movie, not awesome, but serviceable. If we believe the horror stories surrounding its production, its a miracle it came out this good.

For me this ranks third overall, ahead of all the Bay sequels but behind 2007 and Bumblebee. Very enjoyable, happy I went to see it. Mirage was cool, the Maximals under used. Solid film, worth going to see.
I do see your point about the need to get a new formula for Transformers film, it does still feel like they have one foot in the Bay-verse, they need to fully commit to moving away from that and the Transformers film franchise will be better for it.

  • @MrZonian

It was a solid movie, Mirage stole the entire show, his character was just the best. I kind of get what they were trying to do for Optimus, but it makes him feel not at all like Optimus. It's like i'm looking at an Orion Pax before he matures into the Optimus Prime we know. I am glad that Optimus knows about Unicron, a nod to how knowledgeable this character is supposed to be.
I think a sequel movie will probably continuing building the character, because idk every single moment Optimus is on-screen I'm just like "That is definitely not prime."
I liked the first act, Mirage got me smiling, but towards the end of the movie, I just felt okay. It's not a bad movie, but not a great movie, it's just okay.

Also going off that a bit more, I can appreciate that Steven Caple Jr. did his research, no disrespect to Michael Bay, but Steven put in little winks for us fans like the Unicron theme, Optimus Prime’s transformation with the arms, and Noah’s exosuit reminding me of Kicker and Mirage. After 5 films of characters who have little to no relationship with there g1 self, seeing Mirage use his powers (even tho it’s Hound’s LMAO) was so cool and seeing a good Unicron in live action was awesome. Tho I do wish we saw Megatron first, I feel like Unicron is such a Thanos level threat in transformers, and using him should be done carefully

I think the movie was alright, personally.
I have a couple of big issues with the movies. It mostly comes down to Terrorcons. Like you said, they're very generic and there's a lot of wasted potential with them. I didn't think I'd like Scourge, Battletrap or Nightbird at all but I really enjoyed them which is why it's upsetting they were pretty much treated like trash. I was so disappointed by them. It honestly didn't even feel like the Autobots, the Maximals or Humanity were in any danger to begin with. Especially with how quick and little effort they're defeated with. Battletrap does like fuck all in the movie, has no lines and any significance to anything. He doesn't even need to be the muscle of the group. Overall, the Terrorcons were a complete missed opportunity.
My second biggest problem is how the movie is going to be treated/perceived amongst the fandom. I've seen and heard a lot of people treat it as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ himself. The movie is fine, but most of the time I hear people talking about this movie it usually starts, ends or an insult towards the Bayverse is thrown in. The Bayverse is far from perfect and very understandable if some don't like it, but for some of the Bayverse elements that have made it into these movie then to be praised despite doing the same exact thing. That's dishonest and an overall terrible mindset
Optimus was another big problem for me, I don't like the angry, less-stoic and inexperienced Optimus that much. The fact that he was so grouchy and did a lot of barking, it didn't sit so well with me. This Optimus felt like AoE and TLK Optimus to me, but somehow worse. I also think his formula is way too generic too. I guess it's different for the character, but this didn't do it for me

The next movie should use the Jablonsky soundtrack more, reboot or not. I think Arrival to Earth is the "Transformers more than meets the eye" theme for live action. The Optimus theme I like to think that the whole movie develops Optimus from someone who cares just for his team and his home to something somewhat like 2007 Optimus, so that theme plays The Autobot theme is just a good, hopeful song to end the movie, but at the end of the day, they're part of no sacrifice, no victory, so I didn't have an explanation for it.
Now that it's a reboot I really want them to use Steve Jablonsky's Optimus theme for Optimus this time, make a new soundtrack for the sad and emotional scenes, and use the actual Optimus theme for Optimus.

As a person who grew up with the bayverse I really enjoyed it despite it's flaws, i do wish they kept certain scenes in the film, but hopefully we'll get the deleted scenes. They definitely need to move on from the McGuffin I know people don't care about the humans but they're way more tolerable than the bayverse.
I'm glad we get to focus on a different transformer instead of Optimus and bumblebee, it felt like Tracks and Raul from G1
My personal issue with the film is the rap and Hip-hop it's just not my thing.
The terrocon's death felt sudden, i wish we get to see them rag doll the bots and maximals but both maximals and bots have to use their ingenuity to take them down.
I sorta love the Optimus acting like an asshole then get his act together when primal shows that humans aren't bad and how they're doing their best to survive.
I felt Arcee and Pablo didn't get to do much (they did way better than the bayverse films).
Half of the maximals get completley sideline which which makes you question was was this called "rise of the beast"
The movie is really hesitant on killing it's protagonist i'm glad mirage isn't dead but at the same time it takes away the sacrifice.
I do not like the G.I joe idea because your basically going back to the bayverse, they could've done this back in DOTM, AOE and TLK.

I don't like certain things about the film like lack of screen time for certain characters and the fact that if bumblebee gotten revived by energon alone, why not cliffjumper or airazor, that part just kinda takes away all the tension from later films since we know that if they have the dead guys body, they can be revived with minimal difficulty. I also didn't like how they're trying to set up the GI. Joes, I don't want to see them, I want to see transformers. Despite all that, I'll gladly recommend this movie, just wish that they'll change directors since from what I've seen, the new guy's not really what we need, that would be Travis Knight despite his flaws(like how he did cliffjumper in bumblebee).

    • @sidearmsalpha
      @sidearmsalpha 11 месяцев назад +2

Yeah, it's bad enough they can't develop the characters well enough in a Transformers movie, can you imagine how much worse it would be with GI Joe in the mix? They need to do a series on a streaming site that develops GI Joe and expands on the Transformers so that they don't have to waste time doing this in the movies.

Bro what is so wrong with simple evil villains?
Like not every villain has to have a dramtic backstory or be redeemable. Simple evil dudes can be so fun and enjoyable, and the terrorcons definitely fill that role
Sure I do agree about battletrap and nightbird having more screentime but they are leages better then most the villains in the bayverse. Maybe besides like 2007 Megatron or lockdown.
And Scourge was just so fun and badass. Sure it would have been cool to see how he joined unicron but other then he was still memorable and such a treat to watch. Plus the voice actor did a great job voicing him
Maximals were good, yes I agree we should have gotten more of them but honestly they are highly better then the shit the bayverse did where the dinobots juat show up. At least here they have some kind of purpose unlike the dinobots were they just show up and leave.or nemesis prime because......why not I guess. Devastator is fine because i generally love his design and I guess had some sort of purpose but maximals had more to them even though they still have some issues.
this film definitely does not feel like a bayverse film, I am sorry but I find that highly wrong :/
And honestly I can't blame them for taking some small steps, after the bullshit we got from bayverse, I can understand them trying to play it safe and not fuck up like last knight, revenge of the fallen, etc
the film is definitely not just "fine"
Is it perfect, no. but it is definitely good and a enjoyable film. honestly I am happy we didn't get another revenge of the fallen situation where that movie just SUCKED.

Sorry to say this, but before I watched this movie, I heard that in an interview, Producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura said that it had been filmed in a way that it could work as either reboot or prequel depending on the next director´s creative calls.
I thought he was being dumb. Then I watched this bundle of disappointments, and saw that it wasn´t dumbness, it was a promise, and by Primus he made good on that, to everybody´s sorrow.
    Also, Maximals? Mirage?
I didn´t see any of them here. I certainly didn´t see Mirage, Cheetor, Wheeljack, half-saw maybe Airrazor, barely saw Rhinox, and pffft, you call that Primal?
I only saw the return of Psycho Prime, origins version; Pablo, and whatever "Scourge" was supposed to be. Nemesis Prime, Galvatron, actual Scourge, Tarn... he clearly couldn´t decide what to be.
I did see Arcee. For a moment or two.

To me, I felt the film was underwhelming though plays with some great ideas though it doesn't have the time to flesh them all out. Best felt with the maximals and terrorcons.
The maximals should've been the heart and while we get glimpses of moments especially with airazor and primal but it feels like it needs more build up. Cheetor and Rhinox get bugger all to do either.
The Terrorcons are cool, espically Scourge with his gimmick but again I feel if he was always on the hunt it'd be more engaging or should of played with his tortured side from unicron. If they gave him a mad max fury road vibe constantly chasing and gave battletrap a personality it could have been better. I loved the cons in bumblebee with one beign brains and the other being brawn and how they bounced off each other well while these cons only intresting bounce of unicron and even then it's minimal.
Human stuffs fine. Nothing great lack Charlie but nothing cringey like Cade. And Prime being more bay verse like while I get it from a story perspective it felt like back peddling a bit from bee. Mirage was cool though
Music slaps hard though. But yea to me it was below average but i get why fans would love it.

The people who claim that 'Bumblebee' and 'TF: ROTB' aren't prequels to 'Transformers'[2007] lack imagination, and somehow fail to either realize or remember that 'Bumblebee' was made with the intention of it being a prequel to 'Transformers'[2007]! They even used Bobby Bolivia's speech about cars & their owners in the 1st trailer for 'Bumblebee'! If all of that wasn't enough, the motion comic short film 'Sector 7 Adventures: Battle At Half Dome' absolutely solidifies the fact that 'Bumblebee' is a prequel to 'Transformers'[2007]! Surely by the end of the sequel to 'TF: ROTB', the Autobots(except for Bumblebee, of course) are somehow gonna leave Earth. Either the creative team has simply de-canonized 'TF 5: TLK' or there's going to be a time travel explanation for why Unicron wasn't the Earth's core in 'TF: ROTB'. Maybe after 'TF: ROTB', Unicron wound up getting sucked into a black hole that sent him billions of years into the past, and then, the Earth wound up being formed around him.
As for all of that stuff in 'TF 5: TLK' about Autobots and Decepticons from the prior 4 films having been on Earth before 1987, it could easily be established that Edmund Burton made it all up & fabricated those related objects seen in that room in his mansion out of boredom, but due to his old age, he ended up believing that it was all true and Cogman didn't correct Edmund, because he found it amusing. Also, it's worth mentioning that in 'TF 5: TLK', when Edmund said that he knew Bumblebee when he was a kid, Bumblebee had no idea what he was talking about, and when Cade Yeager tried to encourage 'Bee by mentioning 'Bee's supposed days as "ZB-7" during World War 2, 'Bee seemed to have no idea what he was talking about.

I know this is supposed to set up for another movie but I really hope there's better character development for the human next time. I do think the movie would benefit from a longer cut that expounded more on the Maximals’ and the Terrorcons’ respective histories, more on Arcee, Wheejack, Cheetor, and Rhinox, a lengthier resolution to Noah and Prime’s conflict, and of course, the Transit scene. Looking back now, the final battle’s setting was pretty bleak in color. A grassland setting would be better over just a grey open space filled with grey/silver Terrorcon Freezers. I do hope the final scene is just a teaser for GI Joe and not exclusively for a collaborative movie (thank you for also pointing out how bad Revolution was). At the end of the day though, I’m a very happy customer. It’s a top three TF movie for me.

I’ll be honest and say this film didn’t feel like the true epic i was thinking it would be. It felt like they tried too hard to appease fans by stripping away things they didn’t like from the previous films. I saw many people complaining about the critics being too negative and assumed the movie was good. But as a transformers fan (the shows specially), I wasn’t too amazed.
I also think it was a big mistake introducing Unicron in this film as he should have been reserved as a proper final villain of the trilogy instead of what they did here. The stakes didn’t feel that serious but I guess after 5 movies about the world ending, this one had less going for it.
I still want more films in this style and I think the next one has a chance of being the best film in the franchise if they can strike the perfect balance of things.

Like, putting Primal saying how his future just existed because Optimus leave Cybertron and never returned (similar how War for Cybertron framed), that would made Optimus wanting to get back to Cybertron more of a goal (also to tie up this to Transit scene, about they stuck on Earth). To stop the Unicron rise of power. Would help to tie all the movie, and getting a sequel more hyped.
Also... maybe Battletrap and Nightbird could have been Decepticons along with Transit which Scourge won to getting on his side. Cause they are just there and they don't even fit with Scourge/Terrorcon visuals. They are colourful! I love that, btw

Large majority of this movies problems stem from the short runtime, it’s no secret that this movie was cut to pieces, multiple scenes and lines of dialogue from the trailers are nonexistent (the most insulting cut being “let them come” not being in the movie 0/10 worse than TLK).
Funnily enough this is the only Tf movie that would actually BENEFIT from a longer runtime, if a good chunk of the deleted scenes were left in tact to fully iron out the characters and ideas I think the movie would be hell of a lot better. I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Bumblebee's story was much better than this one. Considering that came out almost 5 years ago, I expected better. The Maximals were wasted. Isn't this movie called Rise of the Beasts?! Wheeljack should have been a different character. He exhibited none of the look or personality of his G1 self. They could have teased some Decepticons towards the end. The Predacons were relegated to a clone army which is the go to plot device they mostly use in the big battles. The end of the first movie was the only one that didn't resort to that. I think Michael Bay put his stench all over this movie. Why didn't they stick with Travis Knight for this one?! He clearly knew how to make a good Transformers movie.

So I just watched Rise of the Beasts in theatres (had the whole theatre to myself, it was epic). There are a lot of points you made I do agree. I really enjoyed watching it, but after some thought, it was a 'not bad' of a film. Enjoyable, but not the greatest.
I just want to get this out of the way first. When watching the film, I noticed there were some Bay elements sprinkled in some scenes (even in the formula, like you explained). Hell, they even played one of the scores close to the end of the film. It got me a bit confused, even though I know Rise of the Beasts is part of a reboot. Of course, when Michael Bay's name was plastered as one of the producers in the end credits, that's when it clicked in my head.
Also, thank you, I wasn't the only one who noticed the pacing of the film.
I really didn't like Liza's acting as Arcee, to be honest. And she is one of my favourite Transformers. Still, hell of a lot better than the Bayformers Arcee, and loved her in the action. My biggest gripe was she was just, "meh." A character to give exposition like Air Razor, but to a lesser extent.

Bumblebee was more of a smaller scale story, so it feels like going from 1 to 11, and I was worried (correctly it seems) they may introduce too many character too quickly to give enough screen time to the right characters needed in this case (especially seeing so many Autobots and Maximals). I think it would be better if it was the 3rd movie than the 2nd.

Imagine if they mimicked alien lifeforms before coming to earth and changing alternates? But I digress, while mass-shifting wildlife would be neat ultimately the result might have looked to visceral..

It should have been a half hour longer so the pace could pan out a lot better.

truly a mess that gives way to the possibility that transformers movies thay emulate the G1 cartoon is better than majority of Micheal Bay's stuff
Bumblebee and CGI are the only thing greay about the Bayverse anything else is disappointing

I don't think I'll be watching this film. I'm just sick and tired of the Human/Robot tensions in these films. At least in shows we get tensions just between robots most of the time.

ROTB has a longer cut, the early test screenings cut. Plus this plot was lame honestly

This movie is mid at best. But it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Likable human characters who’s plot actually feels connected to the Autobots goals. Designs that feel G1 without looking plain or being over designed. The action is clear and easy to follow. Honestly the real issue is the writing and story.

I really enjoyed it I put it up really high on the list the weakest part of the movie was the maximal s though they just didn’t get proper amount of screen time for their debut movie and wheeljack on top of having an ugly design when he was good in bumblebee but just was there but I still think it’s a good transfomers movie for me it mixes the good writing from bumblebee with the action and spectacle from the bayverse and speaking of which I’m glad they gave Optimus a good reason to kill here sure in 07 bonecrusher was going to harm humans sure rotf he was way to enthusiastic about the way he killed grindor but there is no excuse in dotm dude just killed shockwave in cold blood or cold energon in their case megs offered a truce and would leave earth prime had no reason to decapitate megatron right off his body and sentinel send him with megs back to cybertron aoe made sense to kill lockdown tlk not much about psycho prime there but mainly dotm is my biggest issue with prime he’s supposed to be like Batman where they both have a no kill rule only when it’s necessary so in rotb him spoilers here
Killing scourge after he killed bee and infected/ corrupted airazor made sense it’s a killing for justice type of well kill here but with battle trap I just go with the idea that since prime essentially trapped his Autobots on earth that he feels guilty about it I like that being explained of him turning that sorrow into anger and wanting to kill his enemies
