I have the ikamper 2.0 and I love it❤️it’s super roomy super easy to set up❤️and very breathable ❤️thank you for your video❤️everywhere we go it’s like a museum people just love it❤️we got the hard shell in rocky black on top of my Subaru Outback it fits like a glove ❤️we have no problems setting it up or taking it down or getting on and off and we sleep like babies after some great hikes❤️
Thanks for showing. I have one on order. I just got a update from Ikamper last week; they wanted to show a few changes they have made on the production model. They also let me select between a black or aluminum top color option. (The black top, like yours, can make the tent warm if in strong sun all day apparently). The tent change was an additional third rigid support roof rafter rail. I think that required dividing the moon window into two. Something about the side windows as well...slight change.
Mike, howzit. So I'm looking at getting into overlanding and I was wondering if it was worth a video on really just finding your destinations. I feel like everywhere I wanna go is private property or off limits or something. I know some of it is just word of mouth, but if you have enough to say about it, I'd love to hear. Thanks
Just a heads up, got an email from iKamper. They updated the design of the tents being shipped for pre-order. They added a 3rd pole and put 2 skylights instead of 1. All of the windows and openings have been made larger, and they added an option for a silver top
Thank you for posting this review. We have the original iKamper Skycamp and love it (third season coming up). I have been telling friends who carry their bikes, kayaks, etc. on their roofrack about the new X-Cover---now they'll be able to see it better than I can describe it.
Hi Mike, when you camp in bear country would you use a bear box (steel box I’ve used in Sequoia NP) or just put it up inside your tent being so high up off the ground? Or locked in your truck, (but knowing some bears can rip open car doors for food)?
Looks like you have new racks on the Diamondback cover since the other tent leapt off your truck. What racks are you using now? Looking to add a tent / rack to my Diamondback, but it needs to be secure. Great channel, keep it up.
Great videos. I'm looking to do a similar setup. Keep up the great work. Just grabbed a hat and two patches brother. Good lookin gear. Cant wait to get it.
Do you always have the tent on the top so you cant open up the back ..... which kinda sucks. How do you get around it? Is it easy for 1 person to take it off and on by self?
Llod, liking the review! I have an x-cover on order and can't decide between the top color options, silver or black. Does the black top scratch/chip easily? Is the top just painted black or anondized? Thanks.
How sturdy is the honeycomb floor/base of the tent compared to others in the price category? My girlfriend is a BBW and we are probably looking at around 450-500 lbs of weight up top when we go camping.
Can you pack it away with the rainfly on? Does the tent leak and get your bedding wet when you have to pack it away wet? What is your routine if you have to pack it away wet? Have you had any issues with mold?
Enjoyed the video! Thank you for the info. I have a tundra Crewmax with a short bed and a similar bed cover. How did you install the cross bars onto your tonneau cover? In other words, I too would like to keep my bed cover on while using those same cross bars. Any help you can give me to make that happen would be much appreciated!
I recently bought the same one 👍 up enjoy it immensely but I had 2 issues with it so far one was resolved but the other I’ve been ignored on the issue! my rain fly is leaking I figured they would replaced being only 3 months old. just wondering if you experienced anything that this or any warranty issue. Maybe I should gone directly to IKamper
Wish they made this in like half the size. All I need is room for my wife and I. All the nicer tents are large. I have the smallest Tepui and it has been solid. Nothing out there makes me want to upgrade.
Hi, One thing I am curious about, and I know you mentioned not being blizzards and that, is how it holds with snow, packing and unpacking? I'm a little concerned about it being wet when while packing up and freezing inside during the day, and if it effects it when unpacking again at night.
Awesome review of the X-cover tent. Im currently looking to purchase my first RTT. Do you know if the exterior heavy duty skirt is removable? Reason I ask is this specific section would be subject to more wear and tear from road rocks, dirt and debris during driving. Skycamp 2.0 would be an ideal choice but I miss out on the secondary rack on the X-cover.
As someone who already owns a Tepui, I've been looking for a better mounting system. It looks almost Identical to the rails tepui uses. I wonder if you could buy the system that mounts to you cross bars and replace the terrible bolts that Tepui uses?
Odd question but what is the design name of your house? Looks a lot like your old one. I’m looking into building a new home and really like that style with garage/basement and living quarters on main level.
I'd like to see the smaller version of this for my T4R in the near future. My wife and I are planning a multi-day national parks road trip next year. I hope you can make a review along with the promo to save $😁
Mike, great vid. Whats your overland crew think of the new Gladiator coming? Interested? Too much cost? or not your cup of tea? I think you could do some sweet work with one but I know my Yota fans are diehard so just wondering.
I saw a gladiator at a recent car show. They are definitely nice, but new cars are so expensive these days. Hard to beat a late model Tundra for $15k less.
Great Vid, Question for you, With all these tents out I never get to see what the hinge looks like and how it's able to support weight. I'm a big guy and am afraid that it'll just snap. Can you show how it supports weight?

Nice review! Got 1 on pre order. Can you post the center line width between the mounting rails? Also are the mounting brackets that you used what ship with the tent?
Your Reviews are amazing! Im thinking about purchasing an X-Cover. Could you please give some other options for racks (such as the Diamond back shown here) for the same setup- a Tacoma double cab 5' bed and the X-cover tent. Thank you! Patrick
Citrinella repels dogs and cats, maybe it will discourage bears and big cats too. Dab some around the awning entrancey area at the top of your ladder. There's no Polar Bears in Australia, notice how good it works?
Have you seen the undercover ridgelander tonneau with built in racks? Looking at your setup vs that one and wondering if you have any buddies in your overlanding community that have used it.
I hadn't seen it till now - looks interesting. Don't see anything about rated capacity, or much out there about people using it with a rooftop tent. I go pretty hard (haven't broken several other racks, etc) so I'd be leery myself, but it'd probably be great for most people.
Thinking the same thing. Before I went to check the site I was thinking it seemed like a decent cheaper alternative. Very surprised to see it cost so much. If we are in this price range my as well get a cvt or alucab
Been wanting to get a RTT for a while now, only thing holding me back is figuring out how to get my 80 pound dogs in and out of the tent. Any tricks to getting Atreyu in and out or is it a matter of strength and balance on the ladder?
Yeah, kind of a matter of strength, with a little bit of technique, and your dog's willingness to help out just a tad. I usually lift him up in a way that orients his front legs up and towards the opening of the tent. Once his front paws are kind of up there on the mattress, he helps pull himself in, while I kind of lift the rest of his rear section up in there. Taking him down, I'll go out first and stand a couple rungs up the ladder, and he'll come forward, and sometimes I kind of put his front paws over my shoulder as I bear hug him out and back down.
I think you said that the hardshell icamper won't fit on your truck bed, the product website says it will. So, what are you referring to that differs from the product website?
@@LastLineOfDefense In your video you stated there were no hardshell roottop tents that work on a truck, so I went to the iKamper website and they state there that they do work on a truck. So, I was following up back with you to see if you had clarification on your statement in the video - thanks.
"work on a truck" is pretty vague I guess. So if you feel like mounting it on top, on a camper shell, or having it hang 2' off the back of the bed, then yeah it'll work. For me and how I want my tent, it won't work - for reasons described above. Hope that helps
It would be nice if you disclosed your affiliations with these companies (especially after hearing how olight pays thousands per "review"). This doesn't seem any easier (maybe harder) than my CVT and as we know, these are generic tents made in China and printed with whatever logo you like.
OregonShooter this tent is actually manufactured in South Korea. This was a prototype and they did a preorder for them. I believe they sold over 600. Delivery will start in May. I hope to have mine in June. I hate the cover on my existing tent. Hopefully this makes takedown easier. They have also made some revisions in the production model
I messaged iKamper about maybe making a 5' truck bed friendly version. They were SUPER fast on the reply and mentioned you directly! "We have some mini versions coming out in 2020. I need a tent to review on my channel bad but can’t get any company’s to really work with me so that sucks. I think this one or a CVT tent would be cool
Just found your channel really like your Tacoma and with my new job I finally have some money to save up and I’ve really been thinking about getting me one. I stand about 5’5 and just wanted your opinion on if I’d be the perfect size for the driver side I know people have had negative things to say about the seat not being able to adjust it and all. Great channel again man 🤙🏼
tacomas sit like a car on the inside, short roof but legs stretched forward unlike a full size truck where you have a tall roof with sort of bent knees like sitting in a chair sort of. just hit the dealer ship and take a test drive.
Hi I'm pretty new to even using roof racks and I'm looking at buying one of these! Wondered how much over your cars roof limit you can go? Ours is 75kg and we're looking at getting 2 kayaks to go onto one of these (if they fit) so we'd be maybe 20kg over all for our limit for the cars weight and maybe 9kg over the tent racks weight with 2 kayaks. Does anyone know if this is OK or will my car squash like a bug haha?
Happy that I found your channel a couple weeks ago, great video! Have you’ve already done a video on the mounting system over your diamond plate as well as your roof rack.... if so let me know?
I have mixed feelings on this tent love the foot print of it but that zipper gets hung up on the corners sometimes and it becomes a pain definitely a work out on a tundra full size bed rack on it
Hey Mike, I am looking to invest into a RTT. There are tons of options and I understand each has it's own benefits and cons and depends on your needs and blah blah blah... what I was curious on is what are YOUR thoughts on what you would consider your favorite or which RTT would you have on your dream list? I know you have tried a few personally but you also have got to see a ton like AJ's hard top and Justin's on his trailer... these RTT cost from 1k to 5k easily so just looking for a realistic unbiased opinion. We have dogs and it will be off the bed of my truck like yours. I've heard that some brands annex are only useful on certain height vehicles, heard some are prone to leaks etc. I know you arent a RTT expert which is exactly why I respect YOUR opinion because you would be a representation of me as a consumer. Thank you sir.
So many variables... If it's off the bed of the truck, there aren't really any hardshell options out there, unless you have a 6 - 7' bed. This is my favorite of the foldouts, and it's quite large inside. So it all depends on how cozy you want to get with your dog, and how much other gear you plan on having up in there.
Quick question: do you know if people use roof top tents at campsites? Or do most people just go into the desolation wildness? I know you can't speak for everyone, but you have a ton of experience and run into a lot of guys. I just feel that so many people camp in awesome remote areas with their RTTs and am curious if they're abiding by the rules cus I want to join the hyped PS. Awesome videos, keep it up. Hope you've been well
You mentioned you’d like a hard shell tent, which tent would you recommend? I’m researching tents and can’t decide whether to go hard shell or soft. I like the price of a soft.
I have a dbl cab long bed, but I don't offroad. I do service work and for that, I love it. However, it is hard to park sometimes. I need the 6' bed daily, and with the offroad package and a black diamondback cover, it looks good in my opinion. Tough to find the dbl cab w/6'. bed If you don't need it regularly, probably not worth the hastles.

Can you go through a car wash with the x cover without damaging anything?
What type of phone case do you use?
Quick question: do you know if people use roof top tents at campsites? Or do most people just go into the desolation wildness? I know you can't speak for everyone, but you have a ton of experience and run into a lot of guys. I just feel that so many people camp in awesome remote areas with their RTTs and am curious if they're abiding by the rules cus I want to join the hyped
PS. Awesome videos, keep it up. Hope you've been well
Great video, very informative!
You mentioned you’d like a hard shell tent, which tent would you recommend? I’m researching tents and can’t decide whether to go hard shell or soft. I like the price of a soft.
The iKamper Skycamp is probably the one I'd go for.
Roof racks on the bed looks perfect for a solar heated shower because one flipped it’s upside down ready to use. 🧐
Have you ever considered placing the rooftop tent over the cab of the pickup?
Yeah, but would hang over, higher center of gravity, more wind resistance, hard to get in, more effort to take out and put away, etc.
looking at these as a possibility. any comments/recommendations?
@LastLineOfDefense when are you going to do a video tour of your new house?
curious, do you ever find yourself wishing you had the 6' box over the short box?
Rarely - lotta cons in everyday use, and a pro (for me) very rarely.
I have a dbl cab long bed, but I don't offroad. I do service work and for that, I love it. However, it is hard to park sometimes. I need the 6' bed daily, and with the offroad package and a black diamondback cover, it looks good in my opinion. Tough to find the dbl cab w/6'. bed If you don't need it regularly, probably not worth the hastles.
is wind noise an issue with it on the bed? i hear on the actual roof it can be a big deal.
For mine on the back it's nonexistent, but even on the roof I think it isn't too bad.
How do you open the diamondback cover with the tent on it?
I don't - I just get things out from the tailgate.
What’s the weight limit for a tent like this?
Mike, time to get out the Flobee for that mop!
Need one of those things
If it's windy does it have to be tethered to the ground?
It does not - if you had an awning or annex attached, those would need to be though.
Great Review....
