First, super excited for the sky camp mini’s release. Fast deployment time and aerodynamics/fit is important to me. The only key drawback is that you can’t keep your pillows and sleeping bags inside when packing up- related to camp set up time, this is one of the most important factors even if it makes the overall dimensions thicker! This would make it THE perfect tent. Great video, love your content!
Both LLOD and Taco Twonz are fantastic channels - If anyone hasn't subbed to both I highly recommend you do so. Great guys and awesome content. Appearance vote on the tents: Sky Camp looks better when closed. X-Cover looks better when opened. Scott
I'm very interested in the Skycamp Mini. I was going to put up with the overhang from the full sized Skycamp but now I'm leaning towards this. I'll be buying a Gladiator next spring, so the timing is perfect.
Rick Boyett order it as soon as they drop. I pre ordered the xcover and it took a year to get it. And it was a thousand bucks cheaper pre ordering it. Just a heads up.
Most short beds are 60”. If they lengthened the skycamp just a few inches and made it taller to get in the thicker mattress and a sleeping bag it would be the perfect RTT. I’m curious what you think they could do to improve it? Great video as always Mike!
I was torn between the two variant. But since I have an SUV t4r and once installed I'll probably leave it on top for a long period of time. So, after this review my choice is the skycamp for easy set up and take down. And the hard cover will probably protect the tent better from UV Ray and other elements in a long run compared to the fabric shell on the x-cover. I hope ikamper will come up with a thicker layer of tent material just like the newer FSR rtt (tri-layer) for 4 season camping. Thanks for the comparison of these 2 products.
Great video. I've been running a CVT for a while, and I can say when that iKamper skycamp drops I"ll be switching. I like the low profile aspect of it and anything to save me time is a plus.
I was torn between both as there are equal ‘pros’ and ‘cons’. My heart still likes the X-Cover, but my head chose the ‘Mini’. Two reasons. 1. We tend to free camp and move around every 1-2 days touring, so set up/pack up/hard top in windy nights were considerations. 2. The size of the mini (packed up) was the deciding factor. With a standard SUV, it sits and travels so much better. Also, we didn’t realise how much the XCover overhangs the front of our SUV. We centred the tent on the rails, however this restricted the ability to open the rear boot by 40%. If you dont’ move around often, the XCover would be our pick as can carry bikes or fishing gear. But moving around, having to take off the bikes every time you camp and other gear especially if you arrive late or in dark, is not fun. Regardless, what I love about iKamper is they have different models for different needs. Great review. Oh, if there are three of you i.e. two adults and a child or two, the XCover is a no brainer. It’s definitely larger and more comfortable
Nice to see a comparison between the 2. First off I like the skycamp and yes. Mainly for setup speed. I bought the large model. And can easy sleep on a double mattress and use the entrance space for other uses. What I do like on the xcamp is the flat top surface. Which makes adding a solar panel easy. When using the rails. These can also be used for many other purposes. Other preference for the skycamp goes to temperature resistance. Wind protection will be better as well as sun.
I like the Ikamper Mini better. The set up and take down plus the no overhang for my small car are a plus. It’s only one person and a dog and I can’t wait mine to be installed! Thanks for the Demo good video
I think another advantage of the skycamp is the hard shell is more protective. Which would definitely be helpful here in Southern AZ because of the young thorny mesquite trees which are more like large shrubs
Thx, guys. Great overview! I am also here in CO and have been on the SkyCamp Mini list for six months + now. Got the call a couple of weeks ago, so will be among the first to receive one, so I am told. Excited to say “hasta la vista, baby” to the Mt. Shasta! 😁
@@alexpeters9460 Hey Alex...So, contact your local iKamper dealer and have a discussion. The way it was explained to me is that they aren't taking deposits...just compiling a list, based on date of contact, of interested buyers. Hope this helps.
Great option for Jimny owners. Wish it could mount off the rear instead of the sides, just a personal preference. Lovely RTTs for sure. Thanks for the review.
The Skycamp Mini looks like an awesome tent for the 5' bed on my Ranger. Thanks for the great walkthrough. But WOW...(!!!) that price. For literally a thousand dollars less, I can buy the Tuff Stuff ALPHA II Hard Top, and as hard as I try, I can't find a good reason not to.
Thank you, nice video!! Answered questions. Waiting till late fall to pull trigger on x cover, vs sky camp vs. Falcon xl. My concern is the takedown of wrestling tent w/ disabled back. (Seems like smittybilt has gotten the bedding beaten but there's no way I could fight the take down.) Hay Twon, congratulations!!!
So for contents sake I think we would all like to see another video where you do exactly what you did here with the X-Cover and the Skycamp but do it with the smaller and larger Skycamp. That would be awesome to see them in a side by side comparison. Is there more room in the larger Skycamp to store your bedding? I have the Smittybilt Overland XL and a huge bonus for me is to leave my huge double sleeping bag in when I close it up. Thanks for the video as we all have been chomping at the bit to see these new tents after they announced.
Love them both but I would definitely go with the hard shell. I hope when it comes out there’s some room to fit a sleeping bag or two in there and possibly a mattress topper if needed. I had a hardshell roofnest (which was a pos) but was convenient and I was able to fit two sleeping bags and two small camp pillows and a 1inch mattress topper in there. Closing was a bit difficult but made it work. Since my hardshell got destroyed after a drunk driver hit me on the freeway and totaled my truck, Im having to start all over and looking for another Rtt hardshell. My coworker has an Ikamper and seems to love it. Hopefully the wait for the release of the hardshell isn’t too far from now. Lol
thanks for reviewing each type! holding off until march to get a mini for my gladiator! like the no overhang part and size wise it's still plenty big enough!
Love the dimensions of the X cover mini.....have storage space to prop up on its side that is 47 in high. Wonder what the price will be. I have a 2019 Tacoma SR access cab 6ft bed. Currently using Napier backwoods truck bed tent for camping. Napier is also coming out with a rooftop tent next year.
Toyota is the best truck ever made hands down. I have owned Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Nissan ,all of which are also decent trucks and have there positives but when it comes to reliability and just being well built Toyota is the ultimate. I have an 07 tundra 5.7 with 260,000+ miles on it and it still runs like a new truck, It has not even needed any kind of major expensive repair just a few minor things to be expected. I know that's not the point of the video but I just wanted to show my love for Japanese made vehicles. They are just amazing and worth every penny.
At the time, Sky Camp cus it would have to be rooftop on my Xterra. If I had a Taco, X cover / I Camper may would be the ticket. Set up & takedown diff @ around 4 minutes not a big deal in a 24 / 48 hour time period compared to sleep & other gymnastic maneuvers and comforts. :)
Skycamp mini please. I like that there isn’t an overhang like on your Skycamp. I like the more aerodynamic shape and the easier set up. JailBreak Overland just reviewed The Bush Company Alpha RTT that is better than the Alu Cab and cheaper. I think I’d still get a Skycamp Mini if I have a Tacoma. Maybe the other with a 4RUNNER
Not hating... But damn overlanding seems to just be about getting accessories now... What happened to just going out there with a tent and camping without all those crazy gear... Nonetheless great vids and awesome vehicles
Hi I’m a new subscriber....I enjoy and like your videos...Amazing,simple at point and beautiful,I wish we have here in SO FLO the rails you have there haha (we only have mud and lot’s of Everglades) I really enjoy your videos, haven’t get trough all of them but I will keep them coming.Thank you
Ok... so... questions... sky camp mini vs your old cvt tent you had? What would you prefer. I'm debating on pulling the trigger on the sky camp. Just sold my roofnest because I hated how it hung over the cab of my truck.
Hey Mike, any info on what happened to the x-cover mini? I can’t seem to find anything out there about shipping dates, or if it’s ever going to be released? Keep up the good work on your videos!!
I had typical roof top tent and its pain to pack when is rain, plus cover gets scratch and tear from branches. I got Sky camp now just because I was there already, plus wind problem is important as it's too to sleep.
Salut super la vidéo merci J'aimerais savoir ce qui étais de tes barre benne avec les rails pour installer la tente . Marque et model car je cherche la.même chose Merci
Really hoping i can one day buy that ikamper just a heads up some other company is trying to promote their so called ikamper Clone for 2k and but can't compare quality and the name brand
Great video. Thinking about pulling the trigger on the Skycamp Mini next month. Just wondering if you can remove the mounting channels off the bottom of the tent and reinstall them to fit a specific roof rack? I have a Jeep JLU with a Rhino Rack and from what I hear the tent mounts won't line up with the slat in the rack. It seams like everyone drills into the Pioneer Platform and bolt it from the bottom witch might be ok to but looking for other options. Thanks for the help and can wait for the next video.
Given you’ve worked with both the Tacoma and 4runners I gotta know which is your preference and what would you suggest in general? Current gen Tacoma vs current gen 4Runner. Like yeah the only differences is truck vs suv but which do you find more useful in your day to day life?
Mike, how is it for you lifting your big dog into the tent. I am trying to decide the height of the bed rack in regard to getting my big dog up there. I think yours is slightly bigger than mine but I wonder how I am going to get her up there and how tough it actually is to get her up and down.

GREAT VID MIKE. Knowing that you have done lots of vis now with the skykamp on top of your diamondback bed cover, do you still love the current configuration of the diamonback? I myself am torn between the great looks and strengths of diamondback and the storage management and tailgate access of the Decked storage system. With a "basically" full-time cartop kamper, it seems crazy to have the gull-winged diamondback lids.

brilliant

😂😂😂
Most short beds are 60”. If they lengthened the skycamp just a few inches and made it taller to get in the thicker mattress and a sleeping bag it would be the perfect RTT. I’m curious what you think they could do to improve it?
Great video as always Mike!
Agreed, I think if they made it to be roughly the length of a 5’ bed, and 1 or 2” thicker to accommodate a thicker mattress, I would like it better.
I was torn between the two variant. But since I have an SUV t4r and once installed I'll probably leave it on top for a long period of time. Sleeping bag, full size pillow, sleeping pad, PJ,s, plus gadgets all fit inside when packed up in the sky kamper. Quick and easy. Love my iKamper.
Very nice on both covers. Outside of the fast set up on the Skycamp. I like the X-Cover better.
Love the collab. These guys are cool. Looking forward to a weekenderland video with these guys.

Alu-cab generation 3 seem to be one of the best roof to tent at the moment

ricecowboy Nailed it. 😂😂
Lollllll
I am for what works. Saving time is always a plus, but what really works is the answer. Looks like both to me.
I like the Ikamper Mini better. The set up and take down plus the no overhang for my small car are a plus. It’s only one person and a dog and I can’t wait mine to be installed! Thanks for the Demo good video
I really wanted an ikamper to review on my channel....sadly they said no. I still love their tents though.
aww man
You a small potato... you need to be big potato
I think another advantage of the skycamp is the hard shell is more protective. Which would definitely be helpful here in Southern AZ because of the young thorny mesquite trees which are more like large shrubs
2 of my favorite channels! I'd need to flip that shovel around on the Twonz' truck. I'd loose an eye, the way it's mounted now.
These guys are cool, good videos here with LLOD as well.

I have a few questions. Does the annex and awning system work and fit with the mini? What is the height of both?
which is better for sleeping long term? not worried about the mini (full-size truck).

Skycamp for its easier and faster set up and take down. Also for it’s more protective shell which is also more aerodynamic.
I want to get your tent but just getting the rack rails is hard to find they are sold out on the diamondback website
I like the versatility of the big open bed, but covered/secured. Drawers would be pretty limiting for me
Where did u get the camo design in ur tacoma looks bad ass
I am looking to purchase a diamondback cover. Curious what rack system you mounted on the cover?
