+Helium Road hmm.. not sure what kind of music you are into man, but Rick Wakeman is in the top 10 best rock keyboardists of all time. Have you never heard of a little band called "YES"? seriously not sure what you consider a good keyboardist if your hating on wakeman who is a god among keyboardists. Pick up a copy of Six Wives of Henry the 8th or take a listen to Close to the Edge by Yes.
One of the most powerful moments in BBC Radio 2s history. I was driving in my car, had just arrived home and simply sat in my car until it finished. A perfect tribute and a very personal private moment and yet shared by millions.
Kevin Field - yes - me too. I’m delighted to have found this on the tube just now. I remember driving home that day when I first heard it and I’ve now got tears in my eyes again.
Another car moment for me as well. Still brings a tear to my eye. That song seemed to encapsulate an era, humanity and the ultimate questioning of existence - all in one. Bloody genius.
Rick Wakeman is a legend to The Legend Bowie! What a Tribute to one of the greatest songs ever! *goosebumps* I could listen to that piano roll in the chorus forever.... 🎹🎶
Thank you Rick Wakeman. And for the most astute recognition of Bowie's compositional talent that I've ever heard and seen demonstrated. Thanks also for expressing your surprise at hearing something new when familiar chords are played at unexpected times with interesting, and perhaps even, unfamiliar melodies. Flashback: I remember a new, funky Bowie who was warmly embraced by hippies (Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada) in the golden years. I tried to be one (a hippy, not a Bowie fan) but I failed my astrology exam. I'm just starting out with Bowie's music (one artist I want to showcase in my own show) as a performer, but it strikes me that tunes like Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Wild Is The Wind, All The Young Dudes, Golden Years and This Is Not America might be good tunes for any Bowie fan, to begin their performance studies, with.
Thanks Rick, still remember life on mars when i heard it the first time on the radio after i joined the Army as a boy soldier in 1972, which i think was around the time i first heard six wives of henry VIII, my favourite track on that was Catherine Howard but they were all works of Art. by the way i am 59 now. RIP David Bowie. still remember Starman, i was still in school then when i heard it for the first time.RIP David Bowie, a legacy.
RIP David Robert Jones. You gave us classics since the '60's, such as "Space Oddity", "Life on Mars?" and "Let's Dance!". (Plus his stint in the movie "Labyrinth" :))
Going on three months and then see/hear this and other tributes....can't stop crying, so why put any effort into trying.....just cry. It's an honor. Every word, every note was....
Memories of Bowie are majestic, still feel Sadness and Sorrow. Bowie was Music in Mars, Melody in Milky Way, Symphony of Song in Space, Dancing in Starlight.Rest In Peace David Bowie.Rick's piano is phenomenal playing and David would be delighted.
This was an impromptu request by Simon Mayo to end the tribute show on R2 with a live rendition on Elton John's piano. You can just hear the Greenwich time signal pips coming in for the news under the last note - perfect timing - absolute class.
You nailed it Rick. Beautiful, and what an experience for you to have been a part of that original recording and subsequent projects with David. Thankyou.
Absolutely brilliant! Rick has done an amazing rendition beyond compare. RIP David we are still listening! My favorite song of all time, I can listen to it all day and it never stales. It will always be new and bright. Bowie was a masterful writer and understood change and people. Man I'm gonna miss him..!!
Rick Wakeman and Tangerine Dream were significant contributors to musical discourse, and were never promoted well by the "powers that be" despite movie soundtracks and much more. The power of music has always been an ability to convey emotion directly, and many other art forms envy that. If you listen, listen instead of hear, you will hear real emotion in this piece--and that is the mark of a Master Musician. Thank you, Mr. Wakeman. No one who has ears would even remotely consider this for being anything more than it is--being art being aware of being alive. I genuinely hope you profit from sharing this with us. Signed, an admirer, not a fan.
FredRedFrred: You talk utter nonsense. Wakeman's Journey To The Centre Of The Earth album was #1 in UK and #3 in USA. His 1st 4 albums were all top 10 in UK.
I was hoping, that after nearly six months, this video and tribute wouldn't bring a tear to my eye. Rick speaks with such raw emotion, grief and love that it's impossible not to be moved. Let alone how he plays that piano. Needless to say I'm still totes emosh, we all are 💔
A beautiful song that could bring you to tears. It just as great as the Eric Carmen song all by my self. What a touching song and arrangement, a tribute to the loss of a friend and musical soul mate . Thank you MR Rick Wakeman!
Rick Wakeman is a great musician himself so I feel supported by his judgement. : 'Life on Mars is one of the best songs I've ever had the priviledge to work on. It had every single ingredient'. He described the song in a way I could never do but ' Life on Mars' is Bowie's masterpiece, IMO
wakeman is a good sincere dude me thinx---alot of others are simply not,and i seen rick raving about this tune and hunky dory long before davids passing--great playin
Thought I knew my 70'ties prog rock. But I had no clue Rick Wakeman was the pianist on Life On Mars! My respect for David Bowie just rose to even higher levels!
One of the best songs ever written by one of the greatest stars ever. When it was played on the radio and then immediately the pips went it,it was so poignant, so moving. A brilliant tribute.
Great interview and tribute to the late great David from his friend and collaborator Rick Wakeman. Rick has to be one of "the" best keyboard musicians in rock, maybe music history. Just listen to Bowie's Hunky Dory or Rick's solo albums like Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. One of my fav's is Rick's winter olympics soundtrack that he did; I forget which year. This version of Life On Mars is great, superb musician indeed. Oh and ya, Hunky Dory has more or less always been my fav Bowie album. Rick plays this upright piano that just has this sound that really gives the record most of it's charactor and feel.
Why am I allowed to put only one like if I keep coming over and over to see this impressive performance of Rick from a brilliant melody of David. Statistics are misleading a bit...
Gosh, David Bowie was an amazing talent but Rick has demonstrated on so many occasions that he is simply the master of the piano
Well that was f*cking beautiful.
Wakeman = keyboard god
YES YES YES
i agree with what you said about Wakeman. But dont forget about Mike Garson who played on many Bowie albums and tours for many years...
+Helium Road Not piano God, that's for sure. Keyboards fine, but there are many excellent keyboardists. I like the reference keymaster did aha
+LinkBulletBill Compared to whom,
other than concert pianists, please.

Exactly the same. And timed beautifully at the end.
Same here, just parked up outside my home after work.
Sat there until the end.
Extremely moving tribute.
Another car moment for me as well. Still brings a tear to my eye. That song seemed to encapsulate an era, humanity and the ultimate questioning of existence - all in one. Bloody genius.
It happened to me in the same way. I think I’ll never forget that moment. Thanks Rick.. thanks David ….God blessed you all
Five years on and it's still one of most emotional performances I've ever listened to.
Rick Wakeman is a legend to The Legend Bowie! What a Tribute to one of the greatest songs ever! *goosebumps* I could listen to that piano roll in the chorus forever.... 🎹🎶
So beautiful song and so well played, wow, nice piano hands.
Very beautiful
That is the most perfect rendition and feeling in a piano piece I have ever heard. Thanks Rick, and thanks David. RIP.
A fabulous tribute by one genius to another.
Thank you Rick Wakeman. And for the most astute recognition of Bowie's compositional talent that I've ever heard and seen demonstrated. Rick Wakeman is so talented! Touching tribute.

Two of the all time great musicians. Rick and Bowie. Fabulous tribute 8-)

Well done Rick. I know Bowie was a great friend of yours and he meant a lot to you. A fitting beautiful tribute.

This beautiful song brought me to tears. Rest in peace, Mr. David Bowie.
Thank you Rick for your beautiful tribute..............beautiful just like the man.
Very nice. In the 1970's Rick Wakeman was one of my favorite musicians and this seems to be very appropriate
Its hard at the time, to admit you lived in a time of legends.
Not quite the same these days is it.....
Absolute fuckin' genius, on both Bowie;s and Rick's part....Thanks to both of you, that was the greatest song of my childhood!
And my adulthood as well!
