What a beautiful tribute to Keith Emerson. It is sad that so few of today's most respected popular music artists have classical music training. Rick's & Keith's classical music training shines through on this exquisite piece.
@@llamaking9835 Their virtuosity was in the way they composed music. Being a master of simplicity is virtuosity. That's all I have to say to you just to put you in your place cause you know shit about music. You must be a Drake fan.
I'm so glad I found this. As a professional musician (keyboard) for decades, Keith and Rick were of course gods to me. And still are. Just insane talents, who provided us with such great music.
Love Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson. Trilogy is such a hauntingly beautiful song, one that just takes you to a magical place. Great rendition by Rick. RIP Keith Emerson.
I have always loved Trilogy (Greg's vocals, the lyrics, etc) and just saw Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy group play it last month and OMG...I literally sat there, fighting back tears the whole time. LIke you say, it is such a hauntingly beautiful song, however played.
I saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer Live in 1977 at Cornell’s Barton Hall. We were just young college students then and although we already knew about their incredible music we didn’t seem to quite know what to expect. It was surreal. The first half blew us away. We were shell shocked. During the intermission the announcer told us the 2nd half would be even better and astonishingly, he was right. Keith was bending notes into oblivion on the moog, Carl was buzz-sawing his synthesized percussion and Greg’s voice just cut right through you. You never forget something like that. So glad I got to see them.
YES and EMERSON, LAKE and PALMER are two of my favorite groups of all time, and this is a beautiful rendition ...It brings tears to my eyes. It's too bad that Rick and Keith never got to do an album together.
So, there is the only one living from the Great Three - Keith Emerson, Marian Varga, Rick Wakeman. God bless you, Rick and thank to all of you for great music.
mr.gears, Thank you for this beautiful eulogy, tribute from the master Rick Wakeman, wished I could have been there. Saw Rick in the early 70's in Pittsburgh, Pa. USA . Never got to see Keith. Rick, we want you around for many years to come....I believe you are our last great modern composer of this gorgeous classical rock music. Thank you for the many happy memories you have given to all your fans. You are a sweet, gentle soul, God Bless ♥️
I love Rick Wakeman, not only as a musician but as a genuine humorous human being. His keyboard skills were only second to one....KEITH EMERSON. MUCH LOVE

One of the most powerful Tributes I have ever had the honor to listen to and watch being performed. Amazing piece of music, reproduced by one of the Master's and Giants of Prog. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
With tears in my eyes, I too am overjoyed that you caught this on camera. What an amazing moment. I studied piano and then pipe organ through the 1960s. I discovered The Nice, then Yes, and ELP. All through the 1970s, I and my musician friends were obsessed with ELP. And I mean OBSESSED. We played everything. We deciphered ELP tunes note by note. I grew up in West Los Angeles and never missed an ELP, Yes, or Jethro Tull concert, nor did my circle of friends. My best friend, also a pianist, and I used our connections and money to get front row seats. No cost or effort was too much to make this happen, if we could possibly do it. So yeah, I was a fan, to say the least, and still am. Wakeman and Emerson were good friends, so I'm not surprised that Wakeman would do this. Trilogy is a particularly gorgeous piece of music created by Emerson, and Wakeman has the skill to work with it. Listening to this, I am instantly transported to the moment I first heard it, after buying the album on the day it appeared at Tower Records in Hollywood. I was was one of those waiting in line for it. Take A Pebble is another that I used to play endlessly on the piano. I probably drove my neighbors crazy, and I don't care. But I suspect they actually loved it. I never got a single complaint, ever, in all the years of banging on the piano. Tarkus was, of course, another. My neighbors learned to appreciate 5/4 or 10/8 time signatures. Haha. As is always the case with music, it will probably be a hundred years before these geniuses are fully recognized. But they will be. You can depend on it.
Saw both of them too in March of 74 in Memphis. I'll remember it forever. Both of the greatest keyboards artists to ever live in the same month. I was 18.
I have never understood why this incredible song doesn't get more attention than it does. When it was first released it did, but not since then. Not nearly as much as it deserves. Should "Bennie And The Jets" really get more airplay than this hauntingly beautiful, melancholy song of love's dissolution, with its unworldly composition and performance?
Fantastic tribute for one of my favourite keyboard players by another. When I was 17, in about 1971 or 2 I was on holiday in the NE of England and practicing Aram Khachaturian's "Toccata" on the hotel piano in advance of a concert. Finishing there was clapping from the back of the hall, from a young man with long hair. He came to the piano and asked me to show him some of the fast bits again. Then he had a go and sight read the damned thing. For an hour, I showed him what I had learned about it. Then he played me a Toccata which he had written. I asked where I could buy the music. Not Published, but you can listen to it here and he wrote ELP on a card. When I got back to school I told my friends who said, "You idiot, Alker - you have just given a rock legend a piano lesson! That was Keith Emerson" A friend produced the cover of Trilogy and sure enough-there was my friend from the hotel. What a player.
Wow, this is a fantastic story. It would be just like Keith not to call attention to himself at your chance meeting in 1971. He wanted to learn from you, and then after a full hour of tutelage found the nerve to play his piece for you. This speaks volumes of the man, and your own gracious nature. Thank you, sir.
Wow! What a magnificent story! Gave me goosebumps reading it. We lost an incredible musician & composer in March 2016. Thank God there are several that may carry on his torch: his son Aaron, grandson Ethan (who played incredibly at this tribute, at only 11 years old!!!) and Rachel Flowers.
Thanks for sharing this great memory, Steven! I was blessed to have met the maestro a few years ago. A very humble chap and a great story teller, too. Got him to autograph his book (you should read it) and his side of Works vol1. Miss him and Jon Lord to this day. Both greatly influential in my life.
I've met Rick on a couple of occasions, by chance. He's a genuinely nice chap, always happy to share a few words and very self-deprecating, more than often ready to talk about his fellow musicians instead of himself. Top man.
Such a great memorial. So many notes. Just beautiful. I've only recently noticed what a great sense of humor Rick Wakeman has. I love listening to him recount past stories. His rock and roll hall of fame speech was the best. Great bit. Thanks for posting. Well done.
Very appropriate this performance took place on July 28, 2017, the 267th anniversary of the death of JS Bach. I only know that, because I was playing the same night in Prague in honour of JS Bach. r.i.p. Keith ; (
Will we ever see such magnificent talents again? I've thrilled in their creations all my life, and now to be old and have to feel the loss every time one of my heroes passes is pain I wish I didn't have to experience.
...and it's going to happen over and over again, vale Rick, Jon, Steve, Bill, Alan, Tony, to name but a few we will be mourning in the years to come (provided we don't go first).
I agree . It sucks at our age ,constantly losing our childhood musical heroes and influences. Last three years have been tough.Squire ,Emerson, Lake ,Wetton, Holdsworth ,Etc ,Etc.
It sucks at my age too (Young musician), two Thirds of my biggest heroes passed away in the course of just one and a half year, those heroes being Emerson and Allan Holdsworth. I never got to see any of them live.
Brilliant piece of music. But, about all the losses - you know, we have been experiencing that for decades already. Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Bolan, Lennon, Moon, the list is endless. We just have to remember that we were lucky enough to share in their music when they were here, and continue to love them even as we miss them. We will all be together soon enough.
Very Very Grateful I was able to get to see ELP Once in person back in the late Eighties or early Nineties when they played there concert in Tinley Park, Illinois and I’ve seen Yes 8 times in my concert history. To be Able to experience and Listen and Watch ALL the Prog- Rock Experience Grow and Flourish from the Start of it ALL by The Moody Blues Band and All the Other Prog-Rock Groups that Followed in Their Different Styles of All The Other Prog-Rock Music from the Late 1960’s into The 1980’s and Will Never See This Kind of Music Again !!!! When Wakeman came on the scene, he said he'd never heard of Emerson while wearing and cape and playing spread eagle. He'd never heard of The Nice? What rubbish. Emerson was not amused. They became friends much later.

Thanks to the Internet, we have the ability to pull things back from the brink. Emerson and Wakeman (and the whole rest of progressive rock) succeeded in spite of the record companies, and not because of them. Now that the Internet is chipping away at the record companies' control, we can get the music we want instead of the music that the record companies tell us we're supposed to want.
Thanks a lot for sharing! He really does not play Trilogy, not only that, just a wonderful idea of what that Keith's masterpiece has been, with sounds from the eternal world that this music belongs.
Thx so much for uploading! Beautiful work. I had the luck to see Mr. Wakeman during the Yes-Tour "Tales from topographic oceans" in the Festhalle Frankfurt Germany (1974?). The security opened the gates too early by mistake for a few seconds only so a few dozen fans had to chance to slip into the empty Halle 1 when Rick entered the stage to do some "warm-up" and spoke a few words of welcome. It was an almost private club atmosphere. Unforgettable to have a genious like him so close and see him checking the stage arrangements.

A touching tribute by a fellow legend and, through their music, soulmate. I do hope that wherever Keith is, that he knows how much we love and appreciate what he gave us.
Emerson was a huge talent and has left a wonderful legacy for everyone, but, given the small but technically significant detail that he is actually *dead*, the odds that he knows anything at all now are heavily in the 'Not a chance' camp.
Another AMAZING Epic Tribute. Thank You Mr.Rick Wakeman! Well Played Sir. Can't wait to see you in October in Rochester NY with my teenage son Hunter.! 😄👍😎🏆💯
While visiting my uncle in Little Rock during the summer of 1973, I first heard Pictures at an Exhibition. I was 12 years old. In 1997, when my son was nine-months-old and Palmer was briefly replaced by Powell, I took my family to Emerson, Lake, and Powell at the Concord Pavillion. They had a grassed-in section at the back of the theater that was far enough from the speakers that the show could be enjoyed without going deaf. It was filled with families just like mine, all come to hear amazing music. My son watched in rapt attention for 20 minutes, then collapsed exhausted. A good memory! Keith Emerson's music and musicality are timeless. It's wonderful that so many of his performances will be out there for as long as there are people and technology.
A lovely tribute, modestly giving Keith credit in more ways than one. And an interesting illustraton of the difference in styles. Emerson was always interested in contemporary work - like the Ginastera - and produced some genuinely original stuff. Wakeman seems more drawn to staying within the Romantic, with copious ornamentation. It works beautifully on things like Life on Mars, but its maybe less original
Thank you so very much for posting this video. I've been a YES fan (and subsequent Rick Wakeman fan since my youth (I'm almost 61)), and to hear one of the best keyboard players of my generation pay tribute to another one of the best (Keith Emerson) has been a special treat.
Wow, Rick is easily making Keith proud with this interpretation of "Trilogy". Who wouldn't have paid good money for a Keith Emerson/Rick Wakeman collaboration record?
I always thought that a keyboard-centric supergroup with Emerson, Wakeman and Banks formed with intentions not unlike Hackett and Howe with "GTR" would have been an amazing opportunity, particularly with the technological advancements by the mid-80s such as the Fairlight CMI

The juxtaposition of the raggedy old man creating beautiful music is such a visual tour de force. Also, the personal video gives it an echo that may not have even been there live. A truly greatest performance.
I just interviewed Rick a couple of weeks ago, and I was hoping to ask about this gig, about Keith and other things. We ran out of time. The video is just fine, man, and I think a really important document. Thanks for sharing. Virtuoso paying tribute to a fallen virtuoso and a friend. It's so gratifying to hear Wakeman on the piano, playing as well as ever. What a treasure. (And a seriously funny and self-effacing guy...)
What’s with all the dislikes? One legend passes away and the living legend plays tribute to an old friend. Emerson, Wakeman, and Paul Banks will always be the three main characters that gave us Prog Rock! Even Jon Lord was incredible and will be missed. It’s really only Wakeman and Banks that are left. The beautiful music will always live on. Wakeman is a treasure playing for another treasure. ELP, Yes, and Genesis were in many households and still is.Deep Purple? That’s in my house too. What the men gave us in music will never happen again. Some of today’s music is good but nowhere near what these men did.
Just.... wow. Absolutely gorgeous. That is a man who has completely mastered his instrument. I was floored not just by Rick's skill but by the depth in that playing. Again, wow.

I had a record store from 74 to 91. What an absolute golden time the 60s and 70s were. The like we will never see again. So sad! But....here's hoping and wishing. Thank you very much for sharing this.

What a beautiful tribute to Keith Emerson. It is sad that so few of today's most respected popular music artists have classical music training. Rick's & Keith's classical music training shines through on this exquisite piece.
Very sad to be losing these musical giants can't see them being replaced all things must pass
RICK that plays and pays homage to the great KEITH.....simply fantastic.
From an era when rock musicians really had to be MUSICIANS to make it.
Real Total Musicians, and bands with Unique Sounds!
Yes because bands like the Rolling Stones, ACDC and The Eagles were such virtuosos...
@@llamaking9835 obviously not every band had virtuosos in them, but there were a hell of a lot to even name here.
Truth. Thank you.
@@llamaking9835 Their virtuosity was in the way they composed music. Being a master of simplicity is virtuosity. That's all I have to say to you just to put you in your place cause you know shit about music. You must be a Drake fan.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and Rick's rendition is a heartfelt, moving statement about Keith Emerson.
I'm so glad I found this. As a professional musician (keyboard) for decades, Keith and Rick were of course gods to me. And still are. Just insane talents, who provided us with such great music.
just plain lovely. what an era....so rich, so thick. the products will live in the future.
I was at that show too!
What a lucky man you are!
"He will remain in my heart forever". These words show a great admiration he has for Keith.
I'm 61 y,o,,,Love ya old man.You give me comfort to my soul.
I saw Yes open for ELP in Atlanta in’71. Absolutely Fantastic!!
How lucky you are !!!❤❤❤
Best keyboard player on the planet. So glad YES was introduced to me back in 1973.
Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman. Two legends.
Nicht zu vergessen Jon Lord
And Patrick Moraz!!!
Two of the best keyboard players in rock history.
The two best keyboardist, and I would add Rey manzarek
@@johnsy1382 Ray Manzarek? Um, no. Not even close.
@@fretbuzz59 his technique maybe wasn’t as the same level, but the melodies he did were as beautiful as the ones of Emerson and wakeman
Did you forget Jon Lord?
So sad how Keith left this world. His gift of music will live on
💯💯💯🎹🙏🏼🎹🙏🏼Love you , Much love❤💯💯❤
You have not heard the greatest rock keyboardist of them all ... Mr Garth Hudson ... Obviously..
Keith was such a great musician and a perfectionist , he will be dearly missed by thousands
mr.gears, Thank you for this beautiful eulogy, tribute from the master Rick Wakeman, wished I could have been there.
Thank YOU
Rick has a great sense of humor. This is a great tribute to his friend.R.I.P Keith, you were an amazing artist.👏👏👏
I love Rick Wakeman, not only as a musician but as a genuine humorous human being. His keyboard skills were only second to one....KEITH EMERSON. MUCH LOVE
This is where the value of RUclips shines through. Thank you so much for sharing your video of this keyboard master paying tribute to another keyboard master.
I appreciate that very much!

Indeed.
Its footage LIKE THIS that keeps me Addicted to RUclips
Gifts from a generation of genius saw both Keith and Rick play in brum as a 14 year. Old thank you.
I was lucky to see YES and ELP in Paris in 1974 ! Wakeman / Emerson... what else !! Alain from Paris-France

Saw both of them too in March of 74 in Memphis. I'll remember it forever. Both of the greatest keyboards artists to ever live in the same month. I was 18.
Just the best
Vous êtes bien chanceux
The amazing Rick Wakeman plays the amazing Keith Emerson R.I.P
Magnificent, isn't it?
I have never understood why this incredible song doesn't get more attention than it does. When it was first released it did, but not since then. Not nearly as much as it deserves. Should "Bennie And The Jets" really get more airplay than this hauntingly beautiful, melancholy song of love's dissolution, with its unworldly composition and performance?
Benny and the Jets... Ha! . Bubble gum rock.
What an amazing story! It just shows the quality of person that Keith was. Thank you so much for sharing. It made my day!
Wasn’t it Hipgnosis that produced the cover?
Proper lump in the throat time; thank you so much for sharing...!!
Beautiful, simply beautiful.
I've met Rick on a couple of occasions, by chance. He's a genuinely nice chap, always happy to share a few words and very self-deprecating, more than often ready to talk about his fellow musicians instead of himself. Top man.
With tears in my eyes, that’s just it!
Nothing less but so much more.
Thank you 🙏 Rick for this memorable piece and a wonderful tribute to Emerson.
Such a great memorial. So many notes. Just beautiful. I've only recently noticed what a great sense of humor Rick Wakeman has. I love listening to him recount past stories. His rock and roll hall of fame speech was the best. Great bit. Thanks for posting. Well done.
He makes Keith Emerson feeling like Franz Liszt. Thanks for this upload!
Very appropriate this performance took place on July 28, 2017, the 267th anniversary of the death of JS Bach. I only know that, because I was playing the same night in Prague in honour of JS Bach. r.i.p. Keith ; (
The way he resolves “Nutrocker” back into “Trilogy” at the end is perfect.
My admiration and gratitude for both Wakeman and Emerson are endless. Thank you for this beautiful playing!!
That sucks, I at least saw ELP in 1992 still playing great
Brilliant piece of music.
Awesome tribute ..balling my eyes out ..so privledged to have grown up in this era ..thankyou xx
Wow, that was an excellent performance by Rick Wakeman! What a fantastic tribute to Keith Emerson! R.I.P. Keith! You will never be forgotten!
So I Really Cherish The Music and Memories That Came Out Of The Prog-Rock Genre ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The only man I think could do justice to Keith's work.
In my bed room in a council house in sunderland in the early seventies, I used to do air keyboards to Keith and Rick's stuff. Thanks guys, thanks.
I’ve watched this countless times because of two of the best keyboard artists ever
AMAZING! No words..... So glad I was able to see both Keith and Rick play live over the years. Almost like watching Bach, Beethoven, Mussorgsky, and Stravinsky live! These two were WAY over the top! Thanks for the music!
Cant stop the tears from flowing down my cheeks ! Oh my ! Keith Emerson was larger than life to me !
Wish I could have shook his hand Thanking him for making my life so much better !
God Bless You Keith !!
@mrgears thank you so much for filming it. You managed to capture in the background impressions among musicians, especially this beautiful lady behind the bald musician in glasses.
I hadn't noticed... LOL
I grew up with ELP and Yes. Thanks for sharing this!
Me too. What a great tribute to his friend.
Remarkable artistry and a most touching tribute to his dear friend. What an honor! I have to confess, I got a bit misty and without question got goosebumps.
I thank you from the depths of my musical soul for sharing this.
How on Earth anyone could thumbs down this amazing playing I just don’t understand? I guess 217 people have understanding of brilliance!
Do you mean NO understanding of brilliance? Oh, ok, the opposite of what you said, then!
probably dick head rap fans
Sir Rick Wakeman is still not from this ordinary world. He' s a genius.
When Wakeman came on the scene, he said he'd never heard of Emerson while wearing and cape and playing spread eagle. He'd never heard of The Nice? What rubbish. Emerson was not amused. They became friends much later.
Had a lump in my throat. Especially when it transitioned to Lucky Man. Hit me hard. Beautiful tribute.
Amazing to hear Rick add his own distinctive flair to Keith's brilliant work. I would have loved to hear that Emerson/Wakeman album.
It was an honor and a pleasure to welcome Commander Wakeman to my radio show in October 2021. Words cannot my gratitude.. WAXX TRAXX TO THE MAXX on wusb FM NY.
nice one man.
Just stumbled upon this. Makes me realize what a great composer Keith was. And Rick - wow!
No stylistic labels necessary, Mr. Wakeman is a master musician, regardless of genre. He and Mr. Emerson elevated music itself. 🎶 Rest in power, Keith, you enlightened us all to the fact that music is universally uplifting, and a healing force to be cherished. Rick, what brilliant interpretations, thank you!
Considering the obstacles, you did a fantastic job of catching this video. Thank you! Thank you for sharing.
It took just 1 minute - and i couldn't hold back my tears because of this. how much i love Trilogy - and Mr. Wakeman had put all feelings into his tribute. Thank you
I consider myself blessed to have seen both in their heyday and BOTH with full orchestration..Rick with the orchestra for "Journey " and ELP for the "Pirates " tour. They both were MAGICAL!!!!!!!

Absolutely beautiful. The message will always remain in the music. It speaks clearly. Before and after. Thank you for sharing this gift.
In the 70s we had Keith and Rick. In the year 2017 we have Kanye and Beiber. How far we have fallen.
Oh trust me, we haven't reached the bottom yet, not by a long shot. So many people are working on it.

Sad but true
The music industry has gone to hell and they are not coming back.

to the pit of HELL
Thanks to the Internet, we have the ability to pull things back from the brink. Emerson and Wakeman (and the whole rest of progressive rock) succeeded in spite of the record companies, and not because of them. Now that the Internet is chipping away at the record companies' control, we can get the music we want instead of the music that the record companies tell us we're supposed to want.
Whatever, more complex music is still around but sure it haven't been mainstream since prog rock.
Grateful that this performance was captured. Wonderful stories and music from Mr. Wakeman. RIP Keith and Greg.
Such a wonderful tribute from one modern genius to another!

Thanks a lot for sharing! He really does not play Trilogy, not only that, just a wonderful idea of what that Keith's masterpiece has been, with sounds from the eternal world that this music belongs.
What a nice tribute to Kieth Emerson.
Rick Wakeman has always been my favorite keyboardist.

Beautiful tribute. So many great keyboard players of that era. Keith, Rick, Kerry, Patrick, and many others. All wonderful contributors. At some point in our busy lives, find some spare time to listen to their work. Its still worth it. ; )

Thanks Rick! Great tribute !! Very toching !! Wonderfull played !!
Beautiful. What a nice tribute. I also love that Rachel Flowers played the piano concerto 3rd movement - that gal has talent beyond comprehension.
I think only Rick could do such a wonderful tribute to Keith. Many thanks for this.
Love you , Much love💯💯💯❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼💯🎹🎹
mrgears - You did a GREAT job! Thank you for the upload.
Thank you! That means much to me.
How could anyone unlike? These artists are greatness!!
Why not do it for free sand stick it to mgmt?
Makes little sense. Billy Joel and Elton John have successfully toured together.
I always thought that a keyboard-centric supergroup with Emerson, Wakeman and Banks formed with intentions not unlike Hackett and Howe with "GTR" would have been an amazing opportunity, particularly with the technological advancements by the mid-80s such as the Fairlight CMI
Oh, my. What a musically sophisticated time to grow up in- and I was there and enjoying every moment.

This mans a pioneer in modern keyboard and was playing with Synthesizers before most artists even knew what they were. LEGEND!
I can´t explain in words... This is so beautiful, played by such a master, that you just have to watch and listen forever...
Well, I'm in tears. Prog was indeed the symphony of my teenage years and to see these musical giants being removed one by one, is hugely affecting. Beautiful sentiment and playing from Rick. Thank you so much for this post @mrgears You've made an ageing Proggist simultaneously enormously happy and incredibly sad...
The juxtaposition of the raggedy old man creating beautiful music is such a visual tour de force. Also, the personal video gives it an echo that may not have even been there live. A truly greatest performance.
beautiful, isn't it?
I just interviewed Rick a couple of weeks ago, and I was hoping to ask about this gig, about Keith and other things. We ran out of time.
The video is just fine, man, and I think a really important document. Thanks for sharing.
Virtuoso paying tribute to a fallen virtuoso and a friend. It's so gratifying to hear Wakeman on the piano, playing as well as ever. What a treasure. (And a seriously funny and self-effacing guy...)
Well said! One of the great disappointments in music is they didn`t record together, management politics got in the way
I can only say WOW! What a tribute to a special man, musician.Thank you for sharing!
Yes & ELP were my favorites in high school. It's 2022 and they still are. This is beautiful.
They are my favourites at school right now
What’s with all the dislikes? One legend passes away and the living legend plays tribute to an old friend. Emerson, Wakeman, and Paul Banks will always be the three main characters that gave us Prog Rock! Even Jon Lord was incredible and will be missed. It’s really only Wakeman and Banks that are left. The beautiful music will always live on. Wakeman is a treasure playing for another treasure. ELP, Yes, and Genesis were in many households and still is.Deep Purple? That’s in my house too. What the men gave us in music will never happen again. Some of today’s music is good but nowhere near what these men did.
Probably the most beautiful piano pieces ever recorded in rock history
Mark MacIsaac Along with one of the most beautiful voices singing the lyrics.
Just.... wow. Absolutely gorgeous. That is a man who has completely mastered his instrument. I was floored not just by Rick's skill but by the depth in that playing. Again, wow.
