I like this album...it was a huge departure of what we have heard from Cher. Growing up in the 70's and early 80s it wasn't always cool to be a Cher fan. I remember when I was in high school people would say..in a laughing manner...oh you are that guy who likes Cher, you should listen to rock-n-roll. So I was thrilled when Cher did a rock album. I love almost all of the songs and it was great to see Cher do something that she wanted to do, she looked like she was having fun. Les Dudek was her boyfriend at the time and he is the singer who she duets with on "You Know It" I still love to pull this album out and play it at full blast...just nice to rock out with Cher.

This is one of my favorite albums. Cher's voice is perfect, she gives one of the best volcals ever and she sounds totally into it (opposite of Cherished). My fav song is 88 Degrees, It took me a lot of time to appeciate it, and is not a son I listen too often, but still I consider it a gem. Never Should've Started is easily in my top 20 fav Cher songs too. I looove We All Fly Home and I think Young And Pretty is very good. The other two songs, You Know It and Fast Company, I don't care about them.
Great video!! Next one will be very cool too!! My fav Cher albums are all between 1969 and 1982 (+ Not Commercial that was recorded in 1994). I'm not such a big fan of the Geffen albums or the dance era (but I will enjoy your videos for sure!!)

With CHER producing the Bio picture/film it will be her version if her life. Bio film are never good when the person the film is about is involved it generally isn't objective.I mean will CHER really be honest on the plastic surgeries? I suspect that will be bushed over. CHER is always vague about all work she has done despite the obvious amount t of work she has had done.

I could fill you in on the happenings at the time as to why Cher made this career move to withdraw her name in a private chat, but I will share this for the viewers: what followed in her pop-rock catalog would not have happened without Black Rose. Oftentimes, an artist has to explore and experiment to find their sound, and this was an important part in her development as a modern radio pop-rock act. As for the production, it was James Newton Howard's early effort in producing. He went on to do soundtrack work for many movies, so she had the best she could find, and I would say this was a freedom ride as well as a learning experience. It was she and Les Dudek who put this together (he himself was a rock artist with several albums and when he did this, he just about washed his career away) and he has the guitar and vocal chops to pull off "You Know It." It also has to be noted that women in rock were very few. Joan Jett had a big record, and when Pat Benatar had come in, radio told her "we already have a female, Stevie Nicks.." Top that off with the fact that head of Casablanca Neil Bogart died. So what Cher was doing here was ahead of its time and it just needed some tweaking, which is what happened to her later at a new label. That said, her spirit is what drives this album for me, that 'take no prisoners' attitude. I loved it, and told her so the first time I met her.

Julie was written for Cher by Elton John's longtime song collaborator Bernie Taupin.
At the time, although not unheard of, saying the word Bitch in a song was actually still quite risque' at the time.
I enjoyed Black Rose very much. It was not the best Cher ever, but in retrospect I think it was an early preview of what was to come later with the albums Cher and Heart of Stone.
Very risky chance she took with this effort. A brave and growing time in her career.

@@robfitzgerald4595 Well, I do hate to bust your bubble here, but “You Know It” was written by Les Duden and Les Duden IS the other vocalist. The album was released in 1980 and Cher and Gregory were NOT recording together. The ONLY time they recorded together was on the album “Allman and Woman” which was released in November of 1977. They were finally divorced in 1978. They were then estranged and rarely came together and then only for Elijah Blue. In fact, Elijah had a strained relationship with his dad for many years as well, but that eventually became better. So, NO, the other voice is the writer of the song, Les Dudek.

@@robfitzgerald4595 AND, for that matter, Gregory hated Cher’s voice, said she was a bad singer. Also, Cher and Les Dudek were a couple during the Black Rose period. Cher even got Les a part playing “Bone” in her movie, “MASK”. And since Les and Cher were together during the recording of the Black Rose album and Les wrote that song, why, logically, would Gregg Allman do any vocals on the album?? Think about it. Peace.

I liked this album when it came out. My musical tastes were changing at that time and to have Cher do a straight forward rock album excited me. Her vocals were amazing. I think the album fails to work because it is so desperate for street credibility. Cher was way past here struggling youth days and the attitude on the record is lost in translation. This is why the more AOR songs work better than the other harder edge songs because she's not a tortured artist or a brassy broad. All the same it is a favorite of mine, but I completely get the criticism it receives. Hard core fans like me like it and don't really expect others to understand her longing to do a record like this.

If you want to hear this music done right, check out "Desperatel" by "Divinyls". Christina Amphlett was the ultimate rock and rock woman. But she was never a Diva!

Hey Sal, Can I just say that your expressions are very misleading like for "You know it" ... You liked it but your faces didn't say that. I met Cher Backstage at the Mirage in 1990 and had a few items for her to sign. I brought this Album Blackrose and she was so happy to sign it she said " WOW you are one of the few people who bought this album " I mentioned I bought 2 of them lol This was a really good effort on Cher's behalf
they have a few videos on RUclips of this band check it out " Take it from the boys" and "We all fly home " actually I really liked all the songs on this album Keep in mind I've been a fan of Cher's since Sonny and Cher came out in the 60"
During Cher's long career there were many times she was at the bottom and had to constantly had to prove herself which made her the Icon she will always be hence she tried things that didn't have anything to do with her name (Cher) at times that was a problem more the an advantage, also "Bad love" was from the movie "Foxes"

Black Rose was Cher's attempt to break free from the musical confines record labels had placed her under. As Casablanca records was going under she was able to negotiate the recording and release of Black Rose fulfilling her obligation to the record label. The album bust her out from under musical decisions created by record companies who thought they knew best. Cher changed labels for I Paralyze but once it was finished in New York she was already on Broadway and focused on acting never wanting to record again.

"Again, the art work is amazingly on point in the post disco era. "Never should've started" was decent and a promising beginning. This album was pushing the new wave craze which was a softer side to punk rock which spun out from anti establishment youths and their hatred of disco dance music. Pat Benatar, Chrissy Hyde of the band "The Pretenders", Joan Jett & the black hearts" "Blondie" and "The Eurhythmics" were scoring hit records. CHER wanted to rock! CHER's deal with Casablanca records to record 2 disco albums included the "Black rose" album. The label did not have a lot of faith in it's success. (probably after "Prisoner" , CHERs album after "Take me home" flopped) The label ONLY printed a certain amount of the vinyl for the "Black rose" album which was smart because the album flopped and did not produce a single hit. I like the song "Never should've started"! It would have been a great song for "Green day" to record years later. I also sort of like "Young & pretty" & "88 degree's" ..... It's CHER's vocals that is the problem with "Black rose". I hate saying that because she can be REALLY good and has been but she can be really terrible also. The producer is suppose to do their job and point this out to who he or she is producing. CHER is head strong and difficult to work with in the recording studio. Bob Esty for example did his job and bumped heads with CHER but the end result was success with "Take me home" one of her biggest hits.
