Sliding Door Won’t Open/Unlock Chrysler Town & Country & Dodge Caravan 2008-2016: Lock Actuator

  • How to replace the sliding door lock actuator on a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country. This also applies to all 2008-2016 Town and Country or 2008-2020 Dodge Grand Caravans.
    Shorter version (by almost 7 minutes). I edited the original video and cut out a lot of redundant stuff and added a bit of voiceover near the end.
    The Chrysler dealer quoted me about $1,300 after tax ($Cdn). Local mechanics were asking for a bit lower, but still over $1,000. They all said the latch assembly needed to be changed out. However, the lock actuator is usually the source of the problem and can cost as low as $25 for the part. If you do this job yourself you could save a lot of money. I paid extra, about $75 for a Dorman lock actuator from Amazon.
    I would like to cite/acknowledge the following you tubers for their videos. I watched some of their videos multiple times. Without these videos I would have never been able/willing to perform this task myself.
    - Julio Nino
    - Adam & Christine Kloostra
    - Easier this way
    - Joe Sopala
    - Chasing Profits
    - Online Mechanic Tips (JT)
    - 1FNJO
    Window Removal
    - Joe Beermaster
    Note: I cut the part out where I waffle between removing, not removing and then removing the window. Lesson, removing the window makes it easier, but be careful about not damaging the appliqué clips! You will need double sided mounting tape to reattach this part to the door.
    Note2: I edit in where I explain removing, thoroughly scrapping the old tape off and cleaning with alcohol and then reattaching the appliqué using OEM double sided automotive tape as it was not seated properly. Take the added appliqué work into account if you want to remove the window rather than following other methods.

    Had to do one on my 2016 caravan.Your vedeo was the most helpful.Removing the rubber gasket around the window.Then removing the window was the trick.But people have to make sure to loosen the window nuts and just leave window in lower position.I did not remove the narrow trim attached to door that runs horizontal.I did remove that traingle piece at end of door used trim tool and used a heat gun on low to help release double sided tape.To get the whole big black panel to slide out of door is still hard to remove is the window track back by lock assembly hits the side renforcement bar that curves by assembly.Reinstalling the panel that bar causes all the problems.I used soap to install rubber gasket also.

    Please help. On minute 0:56 i am stuck on this part. I can not get my door to unlock at all even when i pull on the rod and i push on the lock/unlock button. I have now removed the whole door panel to have a clearer view and more room to fiddle with it and still nothing. Anyone have any advice? How can i get this to unlock?

    So, you're saying it's not an easy fix. 8 minutes into your video & I'm feeling very overwhelmed, but boy would I love to get rid of that BBRRRRRRRRPP., Thank you for this, I'm going to try it.

      Good luck. Make sure to watch the whole video first and maybe a couple other ones. Then be sure to have all the tools as you don’t want to be halfway through the job and then have to go and buy one. If you go through each step carefully you shouldn’t have a problem. I would say the trickiest part is getting the trim off without breaking it.

      @candiunis8299 2 года назад

      @@reggiesdad2174 Yes, that was connected already. I wonder if I didn't put the actuator in correctly. I don't know if that would affect the manual usage of the handle.

      @@candiunis8299 Sorry I wish I could help you there. I’m not sure if the cable to the door handle is connected to the actuator, the lock switch is with a metal rod. Could the ball connecting the cable to the door handle have fallen out? If not you may have to do some research on where that cable connects to and try to troubleshoot the issue.

      The T&C is a really good mini-van. We love it. Other than the sliding door lock issue it is quite reliable. You also get good value for the price. It is also versatile with the stow and go seats. Ours has a sunroof, which I did not see on the Grand Caravans. The only other issue I have is that the tires spin when you give it too much gas.

    I just bought a 2015 town and country chrysler van and the doors won't open with the fob they will open with the key that is in the fob. I'm not a handy woman by any means. So do I just keep on using the key and thank God for a key in the fob. I don't know if the dealership will fix it I declined all those things they offer while buying the car. Thanks anyway I know this will be a help to many people.

      You could try changing out your key fob battery first, I think it’s CR2032. If it’s not a battery issue it could be the contacts in the fob itself? There are some videos on cleaning the contacts with a qtip and alcohol. Other than that I would check with the dealership.

    if its made in the same factory why would the qaulity be any better !!!!

    • @reggiesdad2174
      @reggiesdad2174  2 года назад +2

      Hi Bruce. If I knew for a fact that the more expensive Dorman part was made in the same factory as the lower priced part I for sure would have purchased the lower priced part. However, I do not know this as a fact. Therefore, I paid the extra price for the Dorman part in case it is manufactured in another factory with higher quality standards, as I would like to decrease the chances of it failing and having to perform this task again. I made light of my decision by saying they were “probably” all made in the same factory.
      Thanks for watching. I hope this video helped you out.

    Easiest way to do this job is remove the door panel, lower the window, loosen the window, push it back up and tape it, disconnect the harness and the latch cable that come from the body.. then remove the whole door assembly and do the job on the bench or on the grass or floor just put some blankets so you won't scratch the door....there is nothing worse than pushing or pulling and the door moving back and forth.. you can also split the latch and panel assembly so you can position the window track and latch first then slide them back together....I just did one and it sucks no matter how you do it. Who ever engineered this thing should be put down.

    • @chrisweld2903

      Whatever engineer designed it,they don't care. They only design it,not work on it once it fails.
