Thanks for the walkthrough. Got it done, but this was a rough one. Never been so close to a rage quit, especially wrestling the back window track and latch back in while it was all hindered by cables and no good access, and inability to reach outside. I can fix anything eventually but the engineers that buried this sure to fail part all the way in the back instead of by the handle are not very bright. No way they ever thought anyone would be pulling this apart ever. The one I just changed barely lasted 4 years out of the factory!
Just replaced this on our van. A couple suggestions to make fixing it a little less of a nightmare: 1. If you remove the window track bolts mentioned at 6:29 in the video, you will have the extra play needed to separate the inner panel and lock actuator bracket without breaking it. Still a major pain, but it helps. 2. Door locked shut - If you remove the interior door panel and expose the long metal push rod, you can clamp down on the push rod and push/pull to unlock the door. Clamp down as close to the side with the lock actuator as possible to keep the rod from buckling. This will free up the lock actuator so you can now open the door. 3. Be patient and have a bunch of band aids ready for all the slices on your fingers you're about to have.
i am about 6 hours in. Wish i had not started. i can’t figure out how to get the lock mechanism and the window guide back in. well i can’t quit now. anyone want to buy a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan.
Question, my 2018 caravan will not unlock, so I figure it is the actuator, but will not open because I can't unlock the door at all. How can I get the door open to get to the latch assembly?
I just used this video to replace my right side actuator. Where's a lot of miss information in this video, at 5:08 he says pull panel out & backwards to disconnect some clips that are in an area. BUT there is no rear movement to the panel. The way to disconnect the clips is to remove the two window rail bolts 6:26 & the three latch bolts 2:28, the movement to release the clips 6:04 well come from the latch being able to move forward, not the panel moving backward. Than when you reassemble the latch just tread the three latch bots in a few turns, than push the latch forward the full depth of the bolts, this will give you the movement needed to reinsert the clips, He says he got the clips back in but doesn't show it because he didn't understand how to get the movement needed & doing this step wrung is most likely how the part that broke was broken. Next the unit he was working on didn't have the rear window rail attached to it & if your unit does have the rail. Going back together is a lot trickier. Pro-tip, remove the outer bottom window trim, as than a helper can help verbally guide the installers efforts to mate the rail with the rear rubber window canal, this is nearly impossible to lineup without removing the outside bottom trim & having someone eyeball it for you, but pretty simple if you do.
This is the first video that truly shows how to do this repair that should be a warranty item. Thanks. O think I will do both of my actuators on my 2016 Caravan. That noise is annoying. I need your on how to open door that is locked shut because of actuator failure. Will definitely be sending a "Big Thanks".
Um, no. I'll just listen to the noise and consider trading it within the year. After reading the comments on the fail rate of this part, I guess I should feel lucky that it has lasted from 2016 til 2024. I did go into the set up menu and disabled the 'automatic lock & unlock' feature to avoid hearing that failed actuator noise when driving.
I followed this video for a VW Routan 2010. I completed the job after a lot of struggle (as expected). Here are my tips: 1.- I used a 2-weeks pill case to organize all the screws I was removing. I used tape to mark with letters where each one was (on the panel) and then I labeled each of the spaces in the pillbox with the same letters. I placed the screws in the pillbox. That way when I screwed them back in the labels marked where the screws went. Much less stress than seeing all the screws mixed up. 2.- The latch assembly came out with the side window track on it. Maybe it is just a difference between Chrysler and VW. But because of that when I tried to put it back in place it was almost impossible to make that track be placed where (and how) it was supposed to be. So I had to remove the molding on one side of the window (on the outside) so I could see the track from there and be able to pull it out with pliers. You need another person to do this. But pulling that track from the outside helped the latch assembly to fit better. 3.- There came a point where the latch assembly would no longer move back inside the door. But from the outside, in the back, the assembly was already about a half inch from the screw holes. So with the help of another person I put the screws in and they pulled the piece into place. 4.- The new actuator came with an arm that didn't hold the rod properly. It kept coming loose when I tried to put the panel back together. So I swapped that arm with the one from the old actuator. In the end everything turned out fine but at times I just wanted to stop and take the car to the shop with all the loose parts and looking stupid for trying to fix this alone.
Very helpful video, I yanked the window guide rail out when I pulled the lock actuator apature out, was a bit of a chore to reinstall, took 4 to 5 hours total, not the hardest repair but definitely a challenge
Jesus himself on his 3rd day couldn’t have gotten that latch re connected! Idk how you did it. I finally said fk it and just left it 😂 I didn’t see any issue once re assembled. This definitely took some patients thank you for great walk thru
Gentlemen, this video was great and I accomplished w/o a problem. Of course I came across the many of the same challenges you did in your video, but at the nd of the day, according to my local Dodge dealer estimate, I saved $1.1/1.2K. I greatly appreciate ya'll putting these together as it was my first time accomplishing this task.
I’m not an expert mechanic or a Dodge specialist but have done all kinds of projects and fairly involved repairs including a Ford/Cummins engine swap, and this is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever attempted.
Yes, it is a brain surgery but thankfully a successful one. You tutorial was very easy to follow and your method worked. Two notes I would like to share: * I didn’t see a need to remove the window regulator motor * loosening the two bolts that hold the window glass would make it easier in disassembling. Overall thank you so much. You have been a helpful guide.
Also hoping that since latch failed during open and doesn't are it fully open i hope the latch is it and not module or more. By far the best video on this!!!
This is a great video. Thank you. It really shows how MUCH is involved in doing this. I am curious how long this job took, as a professional with all the right tools, from start to finish? Some of the comments are saying hours and hours, which is what I suspect would be required of me as a DIYer.
Just did this to one on a 2017 dodge caravan. Almost wanted to jump off a cliff since it took me about 3 hours just to get the latch assembly out. My advice people…. just replace the door.
That dam locking bar and window rail made me quit for the night before getting the mechanism housing back in the door. I really hope this fixes my problem or I’m going to set the whole dam thing on fires… My issue is the the door keeps trying to open while driving and I’ve seen some videos where replacing the locking mechanism fixes it. If not the. Next is the wiring in the slide track
Why make the reinstallation of the assembly back into the door seem so perversely simple??... It's by far the most challenging and frustrating part of the entire process, it took me so long, that I had to come back to it the next day, and finally spoke to a mechanic friend and he agreed and advised that he literally had to remove the sliding door to make the installation more efficient.
Thank you for this video. You have enticed me to do the hardest f-ing thing ive ever done on a car in 24 years, and i own a car audio shop. This is designed f’in horrendously. Wtf were they thinking?!?
Just completed this. Probably of the stupidest repairs i have done on a vehicle in a while. It sucked! The window track, 3 slide clippy things sucked! But glad its done.
A couple of my green fasteners did not come out with the panel. They are still in the door. Is there a tool you can get to help pull those without breaking them? Thanks.
Damn Chrysler. Glad I watched this video though. The other one I watched the guy said the window had to be removed out of the door to replace this. I was a tech for 6 years and even I wasn’t about to mess with removing the window to replace the actuator lol
I have a Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 2017, and I do not why no cover me if the recall are for the Van 2015 - 2017. I am trying to change this, but it is crazy. I have two days and I did not finish.
I just changed mine on the left sliding door and my latch assembly has a big motor attached and the window rail is fully attached and had to remove the entire assembly with the rail I see that there are 2 different ones the one in your video is part number 68030380ac and mine is 68030378ae. Mine is more of a pain obviously but what’s the difference do I have some other feature that you don’t?
Going to attempt this myself but I have a couple of questions. My 2016 Caravan has auto locks but not auto open/close(manual only). Is this still the problem? Locks not working at all, won’t slide at all. Door won’t open at all. Is there a possibility it’s a fuse? (That’s wishful thinking.).
I changed 2 actuators. In the second, I got frustrated after 4 hours. I removed the glass in 5 minutes and then it took me another 10 minutes to install the lock mechanism. I highly suggest removing glass and weather strip around the glass.
Hi perhaps you can help me. I have a manual sliding door that cannot be opened from inside. It unlocks and lock fine, it’s not child lock, pulling on inside handle is different from the working door. The working one would pull further and click. The non working one would pull half and stop.
WOW You made it look easy, but the most difficult job i have ever tackled 3hours in and I cant get the rod to stay locked on the new actuator, and the latch came out attached to rear side window track, cant seem to get it back in! yikes! No latch to keep door closed and I need it for work...
I managed to get the door unlocked but I cant get the door to open (it tries to but it seems to be catching on something only allowing it to open a half inch or so). I need to get the door open to get to the 10mm bolts to remove the actuator housing. Any ideas?
Well taking it apart was super easy. Can't get it back together because it doesn't have that sliding bar attached to anything. So now heading to the mechanic to get it fixed. Don't waste your time or your energy. Just take it
Well I know mine doesn’t have roll down windows in the door so it should be a somewhat simpler process for me not having to deal with the window parts.
Good information but you left out the hardest part of the job... After a lot of struggle you finally got the plate connected... But you did not say or show how you accomplished it....

About 5:30, the lower cable has magically become free so it can be pushed through. Later it is magically reinstalled. How do you free that cable?

You make the job look so easy. So I hope in 17mins and 48 secs I can Have this job done. Thanks Awesome video.
Looks like a lot to do for a 15-20 minute video. However, a very informative video that gets right to the point

The best EVER video!! Listened so many times I feel like we're old friends!!

So the rear window track was just skipped? How did you get that back in with the lock attached??
Um, no.
I'll just listen to the noise and consider trading it within the year. After reading the comments on the fail rate of this part, I guess I should feel lucky that it has lasted from 2016 til 2024.

Chrysler engineers - why do you have to make this so hard?

very good video, I confess that it is time-consuming and difficult to change the actuator, but it was possible 👍🏻
Thanks!
First step, should be how to get the door open when it's stuck shut.😂
That truly looks like a hard repair fix for most owners ?! Great video
Great video. Thank you for methodically explaining each step. Getting everything back into the door is a real treat!
Jesus himself on his 3rd day couldn’t have gotten that latch re connected! Idk how you did it. I finally said fk it and just left it 😂 I didn’t see any issue once re assembled. This definitely took some patients thank you for great walk thru

Just got done fixing both sides on mine, I absolutely do not recommend doing this job yourself if you’re not mechanically inclined.
Very informative. I can now change mine.

How do you disengage the automatic sliding door so that it can move freely to work on it?
Thank you. Damn good video . . I got it done with your help!
Video is no help didn’t tell or show how the window slider went in after it was explained that it’s “easier” with that bar off
This saved me alot of frustration 😊
Awesome detail. Thank you so much,...
What happens will you close the door without putting everything back together
The more I watched your video the more things I've seen gone wrong
Why make the reinstallation of the assembly back into the door seem so perversely simple??... Mine opens and closes but won’t lock. Manually or with the button. Even while driving it can be open. It came from the dealership like this. 😳
Thank you for this video. You have enticed me to do the hardest f-ing thing ive ever done on a car in 24 years, and i own a car audio shop. This is designed f’in horrendously. Wtf were they thinking?!?

A lot easier to pull the window out and yank the panel off complete

He doesn’t connect the loose cable @ 11:57
My 2010 Town and Country left slider has no power. The door slides ok. Can you help?
Do I need to disconnect the car battery before doing this?
Well taking it apart was super easy. Can't get it back together because it doesn't have that sliding bar attached to anything. So now heading to the mechanic to get it fixed. Don't waste your time or your energy. Just take it
The rear plastic bracket is not clear about how to release or separate
Well I know mine doesn’t have roll down windows in the door so it should be a somewhat simpler process for me not having to deal with the window parts.
I am curious to know what a mechanic at Dodge would charge for this. I want it removed, fixed, and put back perfectly.
About how much would this cost at repair shop?
Warning!!!! He is starting with the door open! Not the same steps if you can’t open it.
Good information but you left out the hardest part of the job... After a lot of struggle you finally got the plate connected... But you did not say or show how you accomplished it....
Excelentes
I was going to replace it myself, but imma just trade it in, instead... F this... Chrysler, who designed this!!!!
Auto Designers should be forced to perform service their designs.
Dude you know you are missing something
What a nightmare!!!!
Thats a lot of work for such a bullshit problem. I’ll just deal with the noise
Pro tip: avoid this shit van
