"doesn't matter. I'm going to put in my headphones anyway" had caught me in my soul. built my first keyboard recently, and i'm in love with the sound it makes i honestly love it. As someone who has always worn headphones its been a weird fight.
Honestly 3 or 4 hours of lubing would be a dream for me. I compare my switches in batches of 10 for the sound and feel, because Im very picky. So lubing can take up to 8 Hours for me... But in the end I am very happy that they turned out exactly how I wanted :)
Same, but even longer, it takes me about 16 hours because I also manually lube springs and also slightly lube a part of the leaf that doesn’t affect switch working.
don't forget holee modding, expectation was that it completely removes ticking and makes them feel nice, also easy to install. In reality, you're better off being a surgeon than trying to put a bandaid in the stabs, and the stabs end up being more sluggish than me during math class
I was expecting an informational piece to keep in mind when my board finally comes in, and I was treated to this masterpiece instead. That "F YOU GLARSES" line took me out tho. 😂😂😂
I actually got a lot better results than expected in my first custom full build... Keychron q1, holy pandas that I lubed and filmed, replaced and lubed stabs with durok v2's, tape, force break and holy mods and a 5mm sound mat for car audio... It's just like PC building... It's adult Legos.
1:34 i lubed all of my azure dragons for my zoom65 and then put all of it away when i was done, only to find out that one switch fell on the floor without me knowing before I even started
I've learned to stop caring about ticking as no matter what I do it comes back.... I would be in a mental ward if I kept trying to make it sound 'just right'. Just got ceramic keycaps that make them sound like marbles so I can't even hear it anymore. Also I love that one day I think my board is thocky then the next its clacky, rinse and repeat. Tactile Gang!
Hehe cool, I and we know this pain on the grail search for silent but responsive & crisp actuation. Hipyo actually did it, he made a totally silent but still responsive keyboard. X-D This is the solution to not lubing and not modding (time is the no. 1 most important tool of life, the hours to lube and mod and researching the custom parts and shopping for it could be used to research and shop for textured artisan keys and sculpted artisan keys that are not just for show but are needed to know where the clusters are in the keyboard without looking- especially in intense typing or gaming) is to embrace the amazing keyboard noise a natural notification sound that says we typed something in: must switch to the amazing blue clicky and very tactile keys which 60g or more force which I love, I love feeling the click which is the point of mechanical keyboards coz' not matter what, it's still going to be noisy, thock or or clack or clack is still annoying and still noisy just at a more pleasing lower tone but it's still like that cellphone texter who didn't disable the click sounds for texting. Though Hipyo Tech actually did it, he made a totally silent but still responsive keyboard but still any switch that is the amazing blue clicky switch and is not the amazing very tactile, has a very strong amazing click that you feel (and sadly very noisy) blue switches is really still like typing on membrane even if it's brown switches- that tactile click, the stronger the click is felt, the better (doesn't mean 100g of force) because that's the essence of mechanical keyboards, it's how that mechanical aspect is felt (with the switch's click mainly is the heart). Also the best position for any keyboard is building a mouse and keyboard rig that's just millimeters "floating" above your lap (keyboard on the lap is a temporary but uncomfortable solution, similar to Linus of Linus Tech Tips' 'Lapboard' but his is just a tray design) that you can easily put away (perhaps a kind of arm that's on both sides of this keyboard and mouse "desk basement/level" and is as wide as the table and/or desk mat). God bless Rev. 21:4
I've only been hyper fixated on this for two weeks, but from absurd amounts of Reddit scrolling, RUclips watching, and Instagram scrolling, you've hit all the highlights of what I've seen. 🤣
As someone who tries to lube sets in the evening with whatever shred of time I have, I can safely say...my wife has been wondering why every night I go into my office for an hour or two. I'm just lubing switches, dear. Always. Lubing. Switches.
ergo boards expectation: oh man I'm gonna be so much more productive reality: I forgot to put a "=" button in my keymap and I can't be arsed to recompile the firmware again
Great video man! I've built a total of 3 keyboards and i stopped there... because to be honest, at the end of the day, i always feel i should have saved that money :D i don't know what where my expectations tbh, but since i like trying new stuff (for example, spent a lot of money of a custom watercool, just to learn how to do it ... and ... yeah, an AIO will do the job good enough for you not to care) ... Weird part, i actually use a wireless razer deathstalker v2 and now and then use my customs :D The same goes with keycaps ... worst buy i ever made. Got some PBT Fans keycaps that cost me a fortune ... and ... yeah ... not worth the money. I like the color scheme but, not worth the money tbh. I think we over-value stuff by a long shot :) don't know if it is to have the bragging rights ... but lessons learned. Great vid, congrats! :D keep them coming
if you're not an audiophile as well and you have a blue yeti, you can plug your headphones into the mic and have the mic passthrough your input audio! you will be able to hear your keyboard. this probably lowers the sound quality though, I'm not an expert on sound related stuff so it doesn't matter to me. at least I can hear my keyboard. also helps keep my voice down since I don't have to yell over discord calls to hear myself speaking
Ill add another one: Expectations: "This week, I spent 2000$ on a new keyboard!" Reality: "This 100$ board has everything that I need really and I dont want to justify spending more money just to get a margianially better board, this one is good enough for me"
I've seen that before. I get a board that I was anticipating for a while, and then I get a board I just wanted for fun.... the board that was for fun ended up being better xD
I was in the "it doesn't matter, I'm wearing headphones anyways" group til my kid started complaining that I woke her up typing on my keyboard. I wasn't even running tactile switches.. straight linears lol.. So, I've moved over to silent switches.. and yeah.. I think it matters depending on the use case. I don't mind clack or thock. I dont mind stab tick.. I just want the KB to be relatively quiet lol. It's all preference in the end.
I have one mechanical keyboard. It has Cherry MX Reds. I bought it 8 years ago. I've done nothing to it, but twice a year I take off the caps to get the dust out with a vacuum. It works.
I remember building my first keyboard and thinking, "Man, lubing the switches is part of the fun!" Cut to me 5 keyboards later, looking everywhere for pre-lubed switches...
I had a friend that wanted me to do his stabilizers and I did. It was all good when I tested it there was not ticking, but when I gave it to him it sounded like it was bone dry. I couldn’t believe it because I did holee mod and put a lot of lube. (Edited bc I can’t spell friend)
Nice video. Myth: everyone can affird every fun new keyboard coming out. Reality: most of us are lucky to afford a budget keeb, with one bell and one whistle - on a payment plan. Myth: that it's easy to remove switches from hot swappable keyboards. Reality: almost broke several switches trying to remove them, and haven't managed to remove any yet. Dam frustrating. Myth: it's a bunch of rich guys in their 20s doing keyboards. Reality: it's a mix of ages and genders, and I'm pushing more clerical/admin professionals to do it because you can prevent RSI, and reduce chronic re-injury, by changing your setup away from $10 membrane keyboards - and bring back that joy in typing.
Missed out the best part about the lubing: the part when you assemble everything together and then realize.... there's no discernable difference compared to the factory lube that's originally on the switch which coincidentally should come with the geon x haimu switch that you used for demonstration (well, if i identified the switch correctly)
I don't love supporting dupes unless the artist themselves approved of the alternative means to the design. GMK lead times has been just unbearable for some sets tho...
I remember one time I lubed with krytox 205g0 for half of a set... and then I picked up the wrong jar of Trybosis and half of my set just felt weird. Took me a month to figure it out

I'm done with the hobby. Got an Asus Azoth and a Keychron S1, keeping them stock. Getting too old for that stuff. One is my daily for regular stuff and gaming, the keychron is my typing tool when I need 125 WPM. I didn't have to wait for any of these 2, lube, mod, tweak etc.
I switched to Keychron K1SE from K280E, and i can clearly say mechanical keyboards are overrated. The Keychon is well made, but it's not as cheap and not so comfortable as my older low profile K280E. And it's harder getting used to it. Majority of low profile scissor switch keyboards are good enough literally for any tasks on PC. RGB, PBT, huge amount of different switches, lubing something except girls and all that bells and whistles in a keyboard does look like a rabbit hole to me, and diving deeper into it only cause waste of money. With no actual discount, while you look like an asian. All those small form factor keyboards are minimalistic and cute, they free some space on the desk and allow you to drag mouse more safely, but as PC enthusiast, in daily usage you might lack numpad and cursor keys (insert, del, page up, page down, home, end), at least they are handy for keybindings if you don't type much or prefer gestures to move on webpages. Bluetooth... on a keyboard. I see its pretty popular nowadays. But what is the point? It's still next to PC, and you don't drag it as mouse, why would you sacrifice speed for being wireless? Keychron has Bluetooth, but i don't see any reason of using it. My Keychron is TKL so it's still somewhat usable on daily basis, unlike 65%, i meant wtf, how do you use it? There are almost no keys, you can't even type *Ё* with those, what a waste of plastic honestly.
I like Bluetooth bcz I use a laptop and it’s just easier not having so many cords around. And I guess unless you have to do accents and need FN keys then 65% are fine. For me I can’t go lower than 75% because I need the FN rows and I type with accents
@@Mewcaloid I didn't thought about that... Maybe 65% makes sense for professional typing and programming. It wouldn't be a thing without demand, right? I don't have a Numpad now, and its okay, i almost got used to it, yet, recently in one game i needed to press "+" on a numpad, to run without holding W. Its a bad game and i can just rebind this button, but i'm pretty sure i'll have to face this a few times more. And of course i like mechanical keyboards because it's about FPS (Feels Per Second). Typing feels way much better etc. I just had some kind of rejection stage during first days after purchasing new keyboard. The keychron is amazing. Lurking about keyboards was worth it. I know it's not the best pick and custom keyboard would be better (and much more expensive since i prefer low profile), but i'm completely fine with this one.
I ordered some new switches and some tools and lube to try lubing for the first time. Only my switches and lube arrived not the tools. I had to pry all of them open with my nails and lube them with a toothbrush. Not a fun first experience and the result wasnt even that worth it.

Expectation: "Cherry Mx Browns are just bad linears". Reality: "Whoa, typing is much nicer when you don't bottom out every switch. Even changes the sound of the board."
Expectations: Reality: -Nobody can tell the difference between gateron red & yellow. -The Chinese sold $5 worth of aluminum block for $50. -Group buy happens because the Chinese knows there's no market for it. -Everyone into mechanical keyboards are poser with FOMO syndrome. -The Chinese realize they can sell overpriced stuff by intentionally 'limited edition' and using group buy to jack up the price higher for the FOMO crowd. -RUclipsrs shows clean desk with expensive keyboard but ended up on the 'other' table with CIY Tester68 & tons of Popup Parade. -They never use their most expensive keyboard because it's too precious. -Cherry platform is terrible, only Cherry Brown works.

Cherry Browns have a good typing feel to them.... but they're still linears
Never underestimate how bored people can get.

The tuzi part came from the soul

This needs to be shown to everyone potentially looking at getting into the hobby.
Expectations:
Reality:
-Nobody can tell the difference between gateron red & yellow.
That was great lol
then there is the whole debacle about 40% users vs the rest of the community 😂
