Recent events have made me lose interest in buying stuff - well, boards to be specific. If it is not designed/run by a friend, I would rather restrain myself. The silver lining is that, well, I can spend the money that’s previously allocated to this hobby to something else , perhaps I can explore new things and be content with what I’ve collected. For now, I still keep in touch with the friends that I made from the keyboard hobby, that’s what it’s all about ✌️
Watched everything and already knew a lot of things but honestly, gathering all these informations had to be really time consuming, and I can feel on this video the passion you have for that, you explain everything very clearly and you are really well-spoken. Congrats, keep making such high-quality videos so I can keep watching them
Definitely sorry for the folks that have been affected by the past and present events, it’s not a good look for the hobby, but I appreciate the way your graciously compiled and shared the information here! Currently typing on a bakeneko60 and waiting on a January 60, but thankful for regular updates from the folks running that GB!
Regarding the Bias GB: I was one of the first raffle winners. So I was incredibly lucky at first, but then the raffle got opened to more people. I liked that as I'm not a fan of keeping things rare and rather making them available for everyone. I waited out this entire groupbuy period just to have a labeled B-Stock unit sent to me. I got 50 USD back, sold the board at quite a big loss, and said goodbye to groupbuys and high-end boards forever. I don't really blame them, however, I was not able to be at least somewhat satisfied with the final product, probably more due to emotional reasons than the actual quality. I actually own a full stainless steel halineko-based board with internals I soldered together almost two years ago. This is my daily driver now and it gets used far more frequently than any high-end board I've ever owned.
Not sure if you saw, but unfortunately Projectkeyboard’s most recent business/court filing shows that they were involuntarily dissolved as a company. That situation looks rather grim indeed.
@@Charo.mp4 Just like with Mechs & Co. when we took over Cinder, Bordeaux, and Terror, we @ Ashkeebs have also taken over as lead vendor on GMK Slasher, and in fact intervened in that much earlier as Josh Lee, the CEO of PK, was unresponsive since around May-July of last year. Here are some updates that might be useful if there's a follow-up video: - Cinder: Keycaps are all done, deskmats are just about to enter production now. M&C did not get this process started so I've had to take over and collect payment from other vendors. - Bordeaux: Banderole completed, keycaps queued for production. Deskmats are in production. - Terror: Keycaps are in queue for production> Same deal for deskmats as GMK Cinder - invoicing and will start production once all invoices are paid. - Slasher: Production of keycaps underway, deskmats completed production and in-transit to all vendors. Salvun artisans to be completed within a week. For US customers that didn't purchase through us or another vendor: GMK is looking into a solution the same way they did for the three prior sets here. As it is a different company that ran Slasher, they have different legal procedures to go through first before determining a course of action. Learning the level of communications that were dropped from both of these companies is completely unacceptable, and the consequences of their actions are rather light for how much money from customers they hold. We have been serving the community for years, and I would never in my life think to invest business funds into stocks when the hobby is so volatile. I've certainly made bad guesses for what product will be popular and am still trying to push it out, but certainly not just pissing customers' money away like this. I appreciate the reporting on controversies in this hobby - it certainly has no shortage of them, and they are at the expense of others, quite literally.
Bought a Matrix Corsa in an extra's sale and the PCB stopped functioning within a few days of building. All props to Novelkeys support who spent a day or two trouble shooting with me before sending me a new PCB. While that was a mostly positive experience, it just made me think about what I don't like about this hobby and the GB model. There is no warranty and once extra parts are sold out, you are basically hosed as the company is only able to look to another group buy for a different product instead of support for what they've already released. These small batch buys are just too risky. What if Novelkeys wasn't a good vendor? I'd be out almost $600+ for a luxury item. Unlike a guitar, another hobby of mine, there aren't many local shops who are trained, knowledgeable and readily available to help. I can think of at least 10+ local repair shops for musical instruments in my area. I can think of none for any electronics repair place that can do my keyboards. Annd unlike a bigger consumer electronics brand like Samsung or Sony, these companies have no inherent warranty and no protections for it's buyers. I just dont think it's worth the risk.
Thank you for gathering all this and putting it in a well informed and digestible format. I do hope the trend of more in stock options continues and group buy is reserved for boards that fit the original intention of the model. Looking forward to your Rama video.
Very nice Video! I have a video idea. Could you talk about the Cherry Handarbeit Board? Ive just read some few comments on geekhack and Im already obsessed with the Subject.
Hope you call out one way or another how designers/manu would initially send out unit for review (which will saturate yt of complaints and underwhelming soundtests) with boards only offering 1.2pcb with flexcut, then later on cave in and offer 1.6 non flex pcb. This hurts their product where people who are initially interested would yt search it and be disappointed of the 1.2 flexcut offering but with no follow up that manu/designer cave in to offer 1.6nonflex and no soundtest of the 1.6nfc pcb showing how it actually turned out. This just pisses me off as it’s been happening quite a lot. Something that couldve been offered from the start.. it’s just really stupid imo.
Group buy format is what's stopping this hobby from growing. Companies like Keychron are the only ones actually trying to grow the scene in a way that the average consumer will even begin to care about
You keep showing me that one-off 60% commission with the Lilith mask weight... and every time you do I die a little on the inside knowing I can't go on mechmarket and find one...
I never got my Toxic set back in the day. This hobby has been kind to me but at the same time, I've joined GMK Plum and GMK necro and GMK bread but unlike Toxic I at least got those sets even if the color matching of them were awful. oh and sitting right now in multiple MW sets lol I'll never learn.
GBs in 2023 so meaningless and "designers" still tries to charge 600+ for a metal rectangle which has minimum of a year lead time... Isn't GBs the way to access products at cheaper prices ?

Thank you!! I believe I talked about it in my anime keycaps video, but definitely a subject I’m happy to talk about more!
I really think the whole reddit shutdown meme completely devastated the reddit keyboard community - the posting has never been the same since...
It’s not just the shutdown “meme”. Many of us don’t use Reddit regularly anymore without our third party apps.
The problem regarding Kailh BOX switches (including some retooled) cracking key cap stems may be worth mentioning if you make a sequel to this video.
Interesting, what's your favorite board, bezel design right now and favorite keycaps and favorite profile?
God bless.
Great video! Thank you for making these videos on the lore and history of the hobby.
My pleasure!
i dont blame you for pluggin hali's designs i love them sm
