Unless my wallet suddenly explodes with money I refuse to pay more then $200 a bottle. Well maybe $250. $300 absolute tops 😆😬 Luckily blessed to have friends willing to trade samples that's what it's all about
I honestly thought the one on the right ( glass B) was going to be pappy just from the dark rich color. The evan williams sounds very interesting. I really like its bottle.
I am sure there are exceptions I have not had, but for me, the bourbon sweet spot is 9 - 12 years. The oldest I have had is Elijah Craig 17, which I thought was over oaked.
Some Pappy 23s I've tried have a very well balanced oak profile, and some are much more sharp. Very batch dependent IMO. Sounds like you have a good vintage sample there. Great stuff as always. Cheers!
As soon as you said butterscotch on number 2 I new that would be the Evan Williams. You really get that in a lot of their products. I always tell people the Elijah Craig barrel proof reminds me of a fiery hot butterscotch.
I lucked in to the Evan Williams 23 on Friday at the gift shop. I wasn’t sure about pulling the trigger at the price but never seen a 23 yr ever so FOMO set in
HaHa- “unicorn tears” love that. Really great & detailed review Jason. They both sound fantastic- hope to try some of that old juice someday when things get back to “normal” at the whiskey bars. Have you ever had a head to head between Old Forester 1910 and Woodford Double-Oaked? Cheers 🥃
Drinking some Ezra Brooks right now. I've had Pappy 23 ( it's great to have a friend in the industry). Recently I got a bottle of old Ezra number 7 Barrel proof looking forward to opening it up and giving it a try.
I had a half pour of Pappy 23 for $84z. It was luxurious. It sits on the palette for days. I don’t think its one to buy a bottle of because of the secondary market but every whiskey drinker should have a pour in their travels.
Easier said than done, but if you could do one of these with one of the pappy’s, same year, but one being stitzel weller and the other beefing Buffalo trace. So like a stitzel weller pappy 20 vs Buffalo trace pappy 20, for example. I had a stitzel weller pappy 20 and I see why it was the bourbon that started the craze. Probably the best bourbon I’ve ever had; I think I enjoyed it as much as king of Kentucky if not more
Awesome Double Bass head to head, Jason! Delicious notes all around with the finish deciding it for the Pappy. Wouldn’t mind getting a bottle of it at least once in my life! For a future Double Bass how about Makers RC6 vs Four Roses Small Batch Select? Cheers buddy!
Great video as always. Would love to see you do a head with Wild Turkey Cornerstone and Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye. I see those compared a lot in reviews and would love your assessment.
I was at the Evan Williams experience in Louisville Kentucky. I opted for the Ew 12 year. They had plenty of 23 year. Should have I dropped the dough for it?????
Wow, a couple of heavy hitters right there. I'm guessing they would both be a little too oakey for me but would love to find out. ha ha Not sure if you've done Rare Breed Rye Vs Pikesville in a blind yet. If not, that could be good. Cheers Jason!
I feel you should have opened the E.W.23 first to open it up. Than did the side by side tasting. The Pappy sample you had probably had been open for a little bit.
Love this one! Do you know what year the PVW 23 you sampled here came from? I've had some from early in BTs ownership (when they were still mixing in Stitzel-Weller distillate) and they are radically different than the new versions. Also, I'd love to see Rare Breed Rye vs the 2019 Thomas H. Handy.
Great review. Still hopeful that I can snag a Pappy lottery one if these days. For a head to head Bardstown Bourbon Co Chateau De Laubade Vs. Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend. Battle of the Armagnacs.
@@WhiskyMystery might be right but where the whiskey doesn't breathe in and out through the barrel I think it might it could lose alot of the Carmel oaky wood notes. I mean I have friends in Scotland, Fythe actually and they tell about the climate there and I guess that's what may happen. Be interesting to find out though
no but thats a good idea...basically it happens naturally once you get the whiskey out of the neck and down passed the shoulder of the bottle. Over time flavors can change for better or worse.
John Bonham needed only one bass drum. Lol Wondering why I cannot find Early Times BIB just north of Cincinnati? Not Unicorn tears but I've really been wanting to try it. Any suggestions?
Can literally buy it by the case for 120 flat, after tax here in texas, but we cannot find buffalo trace product within 200 miles. You live in a state where they can directly ship it to you, order from total wine or other large liquor stores.
@@mikec8213 Thanks...I'm new to bourbon. Bad experiences in my teens kept me away from it for about 30 odd years...but then again, we weren't sipping it.
Instant LIKE ! ... rare - heck, even among unicorns, these are ELDER Unicorns (like Tree Ents). . . i'm drinking poorman's pappy, and self-brain wash as PAppy23 . . .
the EW 23 is more flavorful in my opinion. Being at 90 proof the water really mellows out the flavor in the EC23...the EW 23 at 107 proof lets the butterscotch shine.
Pappy is the most overrated bourbon ever! I am so glad I don’t like it and my wallet thanks me! Blade and Bow, Elijah Craig, Angels Envy and Blanton’s all kick it’s ass!
Now you're just showing off.

Oh ill be giving samples of the EW 23! Agree!
Great job, Jason! Thanks for sharing. I didnt even know Evan Williams made a 23.
Alright i'm officially impressed ! 2 different 23 yr bourbons!
Nothing like the "Kentucky hug" or even the"Tennessee tickle" as I like to say, sometimes.
I honestly thought the one on the right ( glass B) was going to be pappy just from the dark rich color. The evan williams sounds very interesting. I really like its bottle.
Yeah the EW is definitely darker.

Good idea! Will do that next!

Awesome review. Kinda thought the Pappy was Glass B at first (oak-🔑-ness) Really surprised with the results. Love the Pappy 23.

Yeah I did that head to head on my Wednesday review for the Double Oaked. they are so different but really good.
Oh great- must have missed that one. I’ll check it out. Thanks!

Nice head to head with two whiskeys I'll never own. Bring me the Pappy! How about Wild Turkey 101 vs Old Tub ;)
Oh man! I like that idea!
Wow never knew about Evan Williams 23 that sounds awesome
Yeah its a hitter!
Let's face it, with bourbon as opposed to Scotch, 23 years is too long. I agree. 10 to 12 years especially in a bonded bourbon, is perfect.

I’m sure they’re both fantastic but are they worth it compared to more affordable and available bourbons aged between 9 and 12 years?🥃
Gts 18, 19 and jr b 12, 13 all proofed down to like 107
A bit surprised that you did not mention that wheaters tend to do better with long age. None the less great review.
I've never had the Pappy, but I've had the EW23 (just a sample) which I thoroughly enjoyed. Great comparison. Cheers Jason.
Thanks Al!

Not sure..It was C3271. I have to ask the gentleman who sent the sample. Thats a great idea for a blind.
@@TheMashandDrum after trying each separately I honestly think it's a close call.

Is there a double bass sheet with all the ratings?
So CLOSE Though!! Great Review Jason!
Great show as always
Would love to know how a 'bourbon' would taste if it was aged 23 years in a Scottish climate. Fun comparison.
I've always wondered that.
Like a 5-6 year old American bourbon most likely since there isn't much climate change.

Jason, do you have a video on "how to let a bottle open up"? Is there a procedure. It might be a stupid question but just asking.

Great review as usual! What’s your highest rated bourbon?
Still William Larue Weller is my favorite. A few of come close but I love that stuff.
Ew 23 for the win in my opinion. Taste is subjective and good review.
Great video!
Scoreboard be damn you got to drink to rare wonderful bourbons good for you Cheers!

great video! can you post a link for your glasses?

The Mash and Drum oh nice, I’ve worked with Tom for glassware too
never had EW23, but had PVW23. now I just smoke PVW cigars, very tasty stick!
Gotta get some of those!

The Buffalo trace stuff isn’t like the stitzel weller pappy. The stitzel weller stuff is absolutely crazy
