The first few AC's were so innovative, many games borrowed heavily from AC, but its come full circle and ubi is not innovative anymore and copies other industry trends. Just remember that triangle looks like a spears tip, so that works against them. Circle looks like a shield, X looks like too swords crossed and square looks like a giant shield (brutes often carry large, rectangular shields). That memory aid helped me remember how to switch stances quickly
Also the game slows down when you hit the right trigger, so if (like me) you were struggling with stance switching and afraid to switch right in an enemy's face, just remember that you don't need to run 60 feet away to do it because the game slows to a near-pause speed while you're switching. So if (also like me) you don't have praying mantis reflexes you don't get punished for changing stances. If you don't remember which button is which stance, you can always look at all of them while you're switching and still have time to avoid attacks with just a few feet of distance.
I barely play the game in stealth as the combat is so freaking fun, probably my favorite melee combat in any game so far. I just wish the game had real mounted combat too, I really want a game to make melee mounted combat work. Wind stance is my favorite, as I love the look of the stance itself, but also the animations is really cool. And one thing, when you kick someone and run to them you can instantly kill them with square which plays a unique stab animation.
The Witcher 3 has really good mounted combat, but I agree. Mounted combat sucks in this game, you get no damage multiplier while mounted even though your are limited to one hit per pass, you can’t block, and a single hit will knock you off the horse. The tackle off the horse skill is literally there so that you can quickly leave your horse when combat begins because you clearly aren’t meant to use the horse in combat, which sucks because IRL a mounted soldier was far more deadly than foot soldiers.
I usually use stealth on the enemys i don't like of one type and then fight the others, this way i don't have to change so much stance and when i can't/wanna use stealth i only use kunai to give me space in the middle of the group (i fight head on, no run back to stay safe, i wanna be a f Demon) , for now that's my way
Love this game so much! I’ve wanted a proper samurai game for so long. I’ve found myself just popping between the stances as different enemies come up. Still working on unlocking moon stance. But I’ve found that I use stone the most even against spears and brutes. I got the perk for spear charge parry, and it’s pretty good. Definitely my favorite game this year and probably going to be one I remember for a long time. Great video as usual✊🏽
Ornithorhynchus Anatinus don’t get your hopes up for cyberpunk. They keep pushing back the release date and are removing features. It’s better to go in with extremely low expectations
Savion S true that, at least this is better than sekiro. Granted sekiro is obviously a souls game, I haven’t played a decent samurai type game in almost a decade.
Damn. I’m less than 10 hours into the game and I thought the combat was cool. You made it look badass! Can’t wait to unlock the last 2 stances and practice the combos
If you in a mission..and you taking down enemies but need to Learn more, Just restart checkpointso you can do the fights again, that's how I was training lol.
I love how the combat is highly accessible and has such depth that you can't just button mash your way into fights. Also, I love how timing and precision is key here. It's like a perfect mix of Arkham's free flow, Shadow of Mordor's similar system, Nioh's stances, classic Assassin's Creed fighting (pertaining to the potential of one-hit kills), and a bit of Sleeping Dogs in how there are actual combos to learn.
The combat is super easy, next time you play run into 10 enemies and walk around and away from their attacks, you will see that only one enemy will attack you at a time. This basically makes the game really simple if you just keep changing stances to the enemy that is attacking you as the stances destroy the enemies they are designed for, I completed the game on hard mode and would run into a fort aggro every enemy and would laugh at how easy it was to kill 30-40 of them because they only come at you one at a time.
@@richierifle2990 This is why I don't really like the combat in this game. 1v1 looks amazing, but if you're facing multiple enemies it looks ridiculous because they will only attack you 1 by 1 which makes it just a 1 vs 1 fight, but longer. It's boring... Gorgeous to look at and satisfying, but boring after a while
@@alinpetrescu2309 It took away the challenge in the game, I don't use anything besides changing stances, if you used ghost weapons etc the combat becomes a joke as you can kill an army of people by yourself and hard feels like easy.

Am I the only one who struggles to get the prompt to observe the leaders. At times I’m right behind the leader and it won’t let me observe them, any ideas why?
Bro this video is so god damn helpful. I'm in Act 2 and I suck at combat and have been relying on stealth and ghost weapons. I've be playing so long that I forgot the basics of using heavy attack to break the guard of certain weapons.
the combat stance have the right balance of depths to keep hardcore action happy, albeit isn't as robust as a more hardcore combat games. Still kinda wish Jin could use a spear or other type of swords. It really is like Way of The Samurai games.
That's exactly what I was thinking about, Way of the Samurai. I would've loved to have had various swords, but I realize it wouldn't have made sense, given how much importance was placed on Jin getting his father's sword back.
@@KenpoKid77 personally I think it could still work given how Jin kinda have already customize his beloved (main) sword/katana/tachi. Maybe something like a another slot of "other" weapon (different weapon types or other type of blades/swords in length) alongside your main katana/tachi-tanto, & bow.
Thanks for sharing Boomstick! One thing I've found that works really well for me is to just switch between Wind Stance and Moon Stance. Wind Stance for anyone that isn't a big boy. One fully upgraded, I do the charge heavy for the kick, and it opens them up for an instakill. Moon Stance for the big boys, just charge heavy and spin to win. For some of the enemy camps, I've actually cheesed it by climbing up the archer towers, baiting the enemy to climb up then just Wind Stance charge heavy kick to send them plummeting to their doom. Overall amazing guide man!
Awesome game. Still in Act 1, but have done everything but the last main mission. I have every stance unlocked as well as max samurai clan armor. The stance I see my self using the most is water.
I really liked the Wind Stance, since it comes with a Typhoon Kick, when on max level it literally breaks all barriers on regular soldiers except brutes, knocks them down and they become vulnerable to an insta kill. Also it knocks enemies off ledges which I think is so much fun.
observing helps so much. I did about 2 missions so far, next one is finding yuna's brother and the first lady masako mission and i've unlocked wind and water already. SUPER HELPFUL!
@@febry5588 I really want to learn how to perfect parry but when I fail at doing it on real enemies on lethal I die really quickly, if it had a practice mode I can practice it for a long time without dying even if I fail a couple of times
From what I've seen so far overall from other videos and yours, I think it makes sense for the majority that by default you'd probably be in Stone or Water stance fighting enemies head on. Certain moves from the Wind and Moon stances are critical to make the most of getting past certain enemy archetypes' defenses, but eventually you'll be able to weave those moves together switching stances throughout the course of a fight. I am counting the days tracking my mail until my copy gets to me, and these are really cool pointers to keep in mind once I unlock and play around with the stances. Awesome vid!
@@Ocean5ix it's definitely a standout for sure! It actually reminds me of a move you could learn in one of the Onimusha games. If you positioned yourself right and did the combo correctly, you could back kick an enemy, they get knocked down and you have the opportunity to go over and stab to finish them off!
You gotta give kudos to the dev for making the combat more authentic than ever. Its not simply heavy attack, quick attack, guard, parry, and dodge but there are actually different forms to use for different enemies and situations. You can be sure they did their homework by asking real practicioners of martial arts.
Excellent guide, as expected. I really love the combat game in this game. Souls games prepare you for it pretty well, insofar as you’ll already know not to button mash. But it’s not as punitive if you make a mistake.
The combat gameplay in your videos really shows the depth of the systems. I was very impressed with the video on Mortal Shell's Beta, and I'm happy to see more guides in the same line.
I just learned how to switch stances mid combat efficiently and that makes a huge difference. Pick a starting stance to either close distance, hit a group or just break a defense, but try and utilize the good parts of all stances. The brute stance is definitely the hardest to implement, but the spin can really pay off to do damage and get out of a group fast. Combine it with chained assassination and smoke bombs and you are truly a ghost
I really like being in wind stance lol. Spear enemies were the most annoying enemies before I got the parry skill, wind stance carried me and the charge attack is also an instakill on sword and shield enemis because of the knockdown stab you get. Also kicking the last enemy is the funniest disrespect next to setting a crawling mongel on fire and watching them burn. Moon stance is my least favorite for reasons mentioned here, and that the kicks don't feel as satisfying against anyone but brutes
Man, this video is great. I was having trouble initiating the charge attacks. I just need to wait a little longer before the long press. Off to practice on unfortunate Mongels. You cant see me, but I'm bowing to you. Shank yew
@@rumuelnathanael8043 The devs have said that ? RDR2 was one of my favorite games of 2018. But imo, HZD is the closest experience. Similar vibe when exploring, and the high quality of combats + the quests and collectibles being opportunities to visit the best locations.
Great video as always. I was worried I was missing something by mainly using the first two only but I just feel more confident and powerful with stone and water only.
Fun fact: you can feint your attacks by blocking right as the attack goes out to bait attacks from enemies. I did it a lot in the six blades of kojiro quest
Stone Stance and Wind Stance is my go to stances. Stone because it’s all-round stance. I’ve realised that most of the time when the enemy stagger and you go for a stab, it kills the enemy if not inflict a huge damage to them. Wind because like he said, a crowd-control stance. But it only works the best when you fully upgrade the stance, getting that upgraded typhoon kick which allows you to kill enemies in one or two strikes (enemy knocked down).
Can’t remember how to do it, I just sprint and button mashed with consecutive success, but there is a shoulder charge where Jin lunges and bashes with his left shoulder. It knocks over normal enemies, bear Cubs, and dogs, stuns grown bears and commanders. Jin does roll on the ground and is vulnerable to follow ups afterwards though. I was playing legends mode a few days ago and was abusing it on the gold story quest with all the exploding dogs.
A tip for using wind stance: after a typhoon kick, you can immediately press R1 and throw a quick fire on them before they hit the ground, this looks especially cool when using sticky bombs and will kill almost all enemies.
Happiehope yeah brotha man I’m aware of that, the sticky bomb just feels quicker and a little more savage; you don’t have to stop the action at all, just toss and forget. You can also kick enemies into other enemies with a sticky bomb attached to them. It’s not nearly as efficient but let’s be honest, choreographing badass fights > efficiency.
It feels like the scene in Naruto where madara sticks a paper bomb to one of the Jonin and kicks him into a crowd of other ninjas. Just another way to switch up combat and keep things fresh in this game
LJ P bro that scene cemented Madara into my brain as one of the baddest motherfuckers in anime 😂 he was so calculated in his savagery. That scene felt a lot like a John Wick movie
I like how the game feels like a tango between enemies, water style has definitely been a go to because of how often I've ran into shielded enemies. Curious out of all the combat systems you've played, do you have a top 5?
Not a top 5 really but off the top of my head... when I think about 3rd person melee combat, my mind goes to Bloodborne, Sekiro, Neir Automata, and Bayonetta 2, and maybe God of War 4 (if they cleaned up some of the hitboxes in that). Although Tshushima's combat is super solid, I prefer a little more direct 1:1 control of my characters movement and attacks.
@@BoomstickGaming Bloodborne, Sekiro, Nier Automata and God of War. I see, you are a man of culture as well :) All 4 are in my top 10 favorite games of all time (Bloodborne being my number 1)

Definitely feels like water and stone stance are the best. It's a shame each stance doesnt also change your normal attacks, but understandable since the heavy attacks specifically focus on breaking an enemies guard.

Kept treating it like traditional games. Tell you what, watching you play, it really makes me wanna get good at the combat. You make it look beautiful.

If you don't remember which button is which stance, you can always look at all of them while you're switching and still have time to avoid attacks with just a few feet of distance.
Wow, thanks for great tips mate! Really out of my mind the whole time struggling with enemies lol

Something to consider for a possible sequel(?)
I usually use stealth on the enemys i don't like of one type and then fight the others, this way i don't have to change so much stance and when i can't/wanna use stealth i only use kunai to give me space in the middle of the group (i fight head on, no run back to stay safe, i wanna be a f Demon) , for now that's my way
Same!
Wind stance so good tho, It can even kill leaders with shield with the charge attack onehit cheese

Finally! Somebody who fights enemies beautifully! So far ive only seen others buttom mash with the occasional blocks/parry/evade

You & Fuzzy make the absolute BEST technique videos. Thx so much !!!
BEST GHOST OF TSUSHIMA VIDEO EVER !! Man have i been waiting for someone to do this.
Appreciate that!
i think it's the first real samurai game i played on a console i like the stone stance and thank you for the video :D
the combat stance have the right balance of depths to keep hardcore action happy, albeit isn't as robust as a more hardcore combat games.
I really hated that you couldn't use spears in this game
Battle Rifle what kind of samurai uses a spear?
@@shamz883 Katanas are backup weapons, in battle samurai used spears, bows or bigger swords. In fact samurai were initially mounted archers
I came into this vid thinking “no way he could master the game that fast” and I’m genuinely impressed at how good he is

It's not that hard once you get used to it
The combat isn’t as hard as you’re making it out to be

Awesome game. Still in Act 1, but have done everything but the last main mission. I have every stance unlocked as well as max samurai clan armor. The stance I see my self using the most is water.
I really liked the Wind Stance, since it comes with a Typhoon Kick, when on max level it literally breaks all barriers on regular soldiers except brutes, knocks them down and they become vulnerable to an insta kill. Also it knocks enemies off ledges which I think is so much fun.
He didn't even mention the 2-hit kill potential
@godsofwarmaycry ye :)
observing helps so much. I did about 2 missions so far, next one is finding yuna's brother and the first lady masako mission and i've unlocked wind and water already. SUPER HELPFUL!

Why we need practice mode if we have the mongols for training with lol
cuz you could use it without having others joining in the fight
@@febry5588 I really want to learn how to perfect parry but when I fail at doing it on real enemies on lethal I die really quickly, if it had a practice mode I can practice it for a long time without dying even if I fail a couple of times
They do
From what I've seen so far overall from other videos and yours, I think it makes sense for the majority that by default you'd probably be in Stone or Water stance fighting enemies head on.
I think the Wind Stance Kick is low key one of the best moves in the game.
Water stance is by far my favorite. On hard I find myself using the other stances just to break guard, then switch to water to finish it with emphasis
I love what you did with each stances intro. The water stance was beautiful 👏🏽
Excellent video, many thanks. Lot's of combat vids out there but this was by far the best at explaining the different stances. Really helped.
I was very impressed with the video on Mortal Shell's Beta, and I'm happy to see more guides in the same line.
great video. thanks for taking the time to make this, and extra props for the beautiful scenery for each of the stances.
Finally, I have been waiting for an in depth breakdown of combat.
Wind stance is my favorite, I just love the pose for blocking arrows.
Shank yew
Very nice video. I love this game. It feels as good as Horizon Zero Dawn which I particularly appreciated when it came out.
Never played RDR2? GoT got its inspiration from RDR1.
9:15 throwing a bomb at a defeated enemy to finnish him off gets this guy 10 extra villain points for style.
Fun fact: you can feint your attacks by blocking right as the attack goes out to bait attacks from enemies. I did it a lot in the six blades of kojiro quest
The game we deserved and needed the most. Ghost of Tsushima for GOTY 2020
This video is absolutely helpful + it feels like I'm a young Padawan in the Jedi Academy learning some stances 4 lightsaber combos but different LOL
holy cow, i did not know that stance did not change light attacks THIS WHOLE TIME I BEEN PLAYING
Got this game on PC… now addicted..
Same, this game is easily top 3 of my games list.
No 1 is TW3

Dad joke? That’s what’s up.
Combat in ghost of Tsushima is really cool and stilish. I really loved!!
A tip for using wind stance: after a typhoon kick, you can immediately press R1 and throw a quick fire on them before they hit the ground, this looks especially cool when using sticky bombs and will kill almost all enemies.
Once you've kicked them you can just instakill anyway, when they're getting up just press Square and you'll run through them with your blade.
@@GehrmansWheelchair Madara, excellent reference. I will start doing this 100%, it's all about killing with style

Awesome stuff man, I am only early into the game so it is exciting to see what I have to expect and can learn.

Outstanding video in terms of value of the lessons taught, and the way the form, controls and best use of the 4 stances are shown. Short too, with quality in every frame. Respect to you, Dojo Master. If only all game specific videos were of this quality and benefit.
Definitely feels like water and stone stance are the best. It's a shame each stance doesnt also change your normal attacks, but understandable since the heavy attacks specifically focus on breaking an enemies guard.

Ok, If this hasn't been spoken yet, I'm just going to say it that your swordplay is just on point. I tend to panic when under a large crowd but you tend to just ease into the combat flow with light, heavy and charge attacks and that precision really thins the crowd especially in act 2 hard where the enemies go on steroid mode. Great gameplay there and this channel needs the limelight it deserves.
