The first band member which was a fan. Nothing bad about flying your own flag.
How about Kirk? he was a fan too
How about Cliff?
Wearing your own merch was a thing amongst all the bands back then.
The "big 4" were also seen as sellouts even back then too.
That whole thing about being a counter culture metal head minority persecuted by the mainstream as seen in shows glamorising the 80's was real.
Being a metal head meant you were giving a big middle finger to society, and in the conservative 80's people didn't like that at all.
The metal community was a very close knit underground secret society that only spoke to one another through the music at gigs. We all went through a lot of pain and heartache until a few of our brothers sold out and stabbed us in the back.
So if "old skoolers" seem upset, that's why.
Totally agree! And honestly, I never agreed with the idea or band etiquette that says these two things....
1) Can't wear your own bands shirt when performing
2) Don't wear the shirt of the band at the concert you are seeing. This one isn't as common, but regardless, I disagree with it.
And if you are a local band especially, you SHOULD be wearing your own shirts! How else are you going to advertise your bands merchandise? I mean, yeah there are other ways, but it makes more sense to wear them WHEN you are performing! That's one of the best ways you can showcase your merchandise to bar patrons and audiences and get them familiar with your bands logo/merchandise! I've done it a couple times with my band. I want them to see our logo so they recognize it, and...you increase the odds of them buying your bands shirt...an impulse buy! I would do that every other show if it wasn't for people deeming it "lame" to do so.
Didn't James resent he fact Jason was such a fan? He wanted him to be more a band member rather than a fan. I'll try to find that interview with James. /watch?v=FNP-D8lXRKA
Definitely man. Gotta self promote, no one else is gonna do it (most likely).
I miss Newstead so much. He was kind of like shamelessly one of us on the stage. He’d pull the audience in when playing live, wear the shirts like us. He was a really unique bridge connection to the band I’ve never seen before. And he brought so much energy. Again, I miss him and his playing so much. He’s just so underrated as a player and performer.
You hit the nail on the head there.I'm proud to be one of those who felt that energy in person.🤘🏼👊🏼
💯
Newstead was my Metallica bassist. I got into them just months after cliff died. Then garage days came out and we saw them breaking him in at castle donnington in 87. I then saw them all three nights at Hammersmith before jumping on a coach and seeing them in Hamburg, germany. That period for me was peak metallica and it's no surprise as I was 18/19.
14 years of solid dedication a true muso and great guy.
15* but yeah very true
Felt like longer. Loved those days.
He was such a powerhouse on stage, unstoppable!
lmao, until he was literally stopped.
Every interview makes me like Jason more and more.
say whatever you want. He is a fucking legend. a legendary bass player, composer, second vocalist, nice guy. they should kiss your feet. shame how they treated you.
Steve Harris and Geddy Lee are why I wanna play bass, Jason's why I wanna be great at it. He put so much soul into an instrument overlooked in metal.
Metallica had two frontmen when Jason was in the band
@@Jose-jl4fy Right on brother
@@Kirkenburer74 A bit off topic but I fuckin' love that username, be a great lyric
@@Dzeroed years and you're the first to catch on. Thanks mate.
Every time I saw a new pic of Jason in a different Metallica t-shirt I would go to my local mall the following weekend and buy that t-shirt. He definitely knew what he was doing. \m/
@HEAVY AS I $20 could buy you a good bag of rice, get some eggs and milk and some chicken breast... you waste it on a Metallica sweatshirt, and by scrounge you probably mean "pick through the swear jar", wash that filthy mouth with Palmolive.
Whatever Metallica shirt he wore, I would try my hardest to find it at the mall or order from a ( rock magazine).....the only shirt I couldn't find and I wanted so bad was the skull pirate one....But all the others, I got lucky and bought

Same here! Other than the fact they were and still today my favorite band, he was the reason I had so many Metallica shirts. If Jason wore it, you bet your ass I had to go buy the same shirt lol
Looking back on it Jason was so much more mature than the other 3 were.
Definitely.
agreed with that. Until this day he is the most mature of them
He was a fan that happened to end up in the band. He knew the role and and killed it. He was the hero in that band.
Love Rob but c'mon. Jason's presence live was unbeatable. He was so badass lol.
unless the crab walk is a metal stage presence...rob has nothing on jason live
@@jeremybilbrey1133 Yeah it's not even a contest. Jason was downright entertaining AND he had awesome backup vocals, just look at that viral Creeping Death video from back in the day. He was awesome lol
I always heard people say it was in bad taste or etiquette to wear your band’s tee. Personally I never understood the issue. I say wear it proud and spread the word.
While James and Kirk were my musical inspiration, Jason was my favorite Metallica band member.
Exactly.
I love Jason so goddamn much. He MADE Metallica for me. His energy onstage was intoxicating. He is who inspired me to start playing bass. For all the shit about his bass on AJFA, he got his when it came to live shows. Bass always sounded loud and killer, and when he sang James became the backup singer. He was a fan of the band first, and it showed. I get the other guys were fiches mentally after Cliff, but it’s hard to forgive them for the abuse they put my dude thru.
This is because he wore those t-shirt that I wanted to get them!
I feel having a band member wearing your merch is an interesting marketing move.
I feel Jason when he said like « wearing the flag » Metallica was his life, he was fully dedicated , he was such a gem for the band
Good on him, not that I’d ever given it one seconds thought about him doing it.
Wish he was still in the band
Then he started wearing Echobrain shirts! 😁 Joking aside, I never bought a Metallica shirt because Jason wore them, I bought them because their music kicks ass, oh, and it doesn't hurt that the shirts looked badass!
hell yeah mikey, that pushead artwork is fantastic always one of my biggest influences on my own art, love pushead and love Metallica ,have a nice week dude , stay rad!!!!
@@nickmaatjes5611 Right on! I didn't know you were an artist! Keep kicking ass! You have a great and safe week, too! 🤘🏼
So cool to hear Jason Newsted reference Jason Isbell. Different genre of music but Isbell is an amazing talent!
You know what all Metallica fans really want? James and Jason interview. We havnt seen those two talk to each other literally since the late 90s and he left in 01..
He's absolutely right. I bought that "Sad But True" shirt because he wore it all the time. Jason was a fan before he joined the band and the other guys hated it.
Miss this dude so much in Metallica
I'm still not used to Robert Trujillo.
Same
Jason Newsted might be the most metal dude on the planet. And the word “metal” is defined by just SO many things. No other dude could have backed up Hetfield like Jason did. His vocals are great, his playing is great, his attitude is great. He was sorely under-appreciated, and good on him for finally shoving it off. I miss him dearly and will support literally anything he touches. Fucking legend, man. He belongs within mention of ALL the greats.
When it comes to bass players he and Cliff probably might be indeed. I'd say when it comes to vocalists Chuck Billy of Testament undoubtedly gets the title. Frankly speaking, Jason was powerful at live shows nevertheless he paid the price that the other members still hadn't moved on after the tragic loss of Cliff. No hatred towards Robert yet Jason had a huge load to carry.
When Jason left my heart left as well.
Newstead is the King! Biggest heart ever. I have So much respect for that guy.
Metallica Meet and Greet VIP Packages: "Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat"
I started listening to Metallica in 1986, saw them live in 1989 and 1992, both times with Jason. And he's always been my favorite member of that band. He seemed like one of us, he was the connection.
And just add to one of the most approachable musicians in all of Rock
Newsted is a class act. Always the most down to earth, friendliest dude back stage. Gracious and true always
I had roughly 10 metallica shirts in my life. My favorite was the Grey where ever I may roam caretaker t-shirt. That and ride the lightning the back glowed in the dark.
Jason made that band in his time there,I loved cliff but I think Jason was the staple ingredient on stand, when yoh saw them live it was Jason always head banging and interacting with fans,he made live shows much better imo
There really isn't anyone with Jason's story. Got to join his favorite band in their prime, replacing his idol no less, lived through them becoming the biggest band in the world, then just walked away from it right after their peak and lived a quiet, happy life. Far out.
Bruce Dickinson
That's actually a very smart idea as he explained at the end how it benefitted the fans, band, crew and label all at the same time. Makes me wonder how many people would have the foresight to see how that idea would benefit everyone if they were in the same position. Massive success brings massive stress and doesn't help you think clearly, so kudos to Jason.
Fkn loved Jason, an absolute badass live on stage, passion, energy & can sing. James & Lars fkd up big time letting him leave.
In Jason we trust. Guy’s a legend.
I wish the other band members had that same dedication and heart like he did.
Jason is the most gate working and real Man . He’s also very Intelligent and wise . He was supporting the band he loves , the band he’s in as well as advertising new Merch . Jason is the Best .
I love Jason quoting Jason Isbell…..I appreciate musicians knowing a deep cut from a guy whose music isn’t even remotely similar…..but then Isbell covering Metallica was just a fantastic way to pay tribute. So much respect all around.
I remember an interview with Gene Simmons of KISS. He shared an anecdote about touring with some opening act in the 70s, and being a bit surprised that some of the musicians in that opening act were wearing T-shirts of yet a third band. Simmons advised them that if they're going to wear street clothes on stage, they should wear their own band's T-shirts. Why advertise for someone else, he asked.
I hate gene
I had the Sad But True shirt that he wore so much. The one with the broken mirror on the back that they sold on the black album tour. Got it at my first concert ever in ‘92. And I got it because that’s the shirt that HE wore.
Jason Newstead is Metallica to the bone.
the dude is a solid guy, you can just tell. shit like this, for the crew members...love it. He did such a great job taking over from Burton, but when Newsted left, metallica died for me i never really listened to them after that. He had become so integral to the band it just wasn't as good without him. also, hearing about how the band would torment him, turn his bass parts down and then got all pissy when he played with a side project...i mean c'mon man. they did him dirty.
Robert Trujillo is such a talented bassist, so fast and technical, and he really has come to take his place in Metallica. That said, I so wish things had worked out that Jason would have stayed in the band. His bass style is more straightforward and heavy, like Lemmy in some ways. (I miss Lemmy. He is my favorite musician.) Jason sang too, and he proved from the start that though he was a different bassist from Cliff, he was the right man for Metallica. It broke a little bit of my heart when he left, but he had his reasons and he stuck to his guns. I wish Newsted (the band) had been able to make money and stick around too. I think they were fun.
This man is/was LEGIT ✊
Best vocals on creeping death period
Jason May be u dont play with James, Kirk and Lars,
But u r still Metallica.
One and only , who doesn't need to play, but will always be worshipped as Metallica.
Jason rules.!🤘💙
I love that Metallica fans still love Jason even though he went his own way. #AndJusticeForJason.
I'll admit, I've patterned my bass playing after Jason...
I bought the Sad but True t shirt specifically because of Jason wearing it.
It would be really nice if the uploader of these clips specified a DATE (or at least a year), a NAME of an EVENT, or TALK-SHOW where these discussions took place.
You know... for reference and stuff, and just good practice. :)
Most solid and down to earth guy. Always showed up for the meet and greets.
I've seen Metallica live 7 times. Five of those with Jason in the band. That man gave 120% for each and every show. He was there because he wanted--no--he needed to be there--and it showed. His playing, his vocals, his energy...the man lit up the entire stadium. I've always loved Metallica and likely always will, but the live show just isn't the same without Jason.
Janick Gers of Iron Maiden. Another great example who always flew/flies the colors.
Even though I have NEVER thought he was a good fit for Maiden, I have to agree
FUCKING LEGEND!
ah jason, we miss u so much
hope u doin' good and stay tough my man \m/
I love that response, way to go Jason.
More people see the shirt, they're more visually familiar with it, then they buy. The design and logo looks so cool anyway, who wouldn't wear them?
They had awesome shirts, especially in the 90s.
He was one of the generals but he was also one of the soldiers.
A real trooper. Such a shame he left..
For me the best metallica was with Jason.
Yeah, had that one too back in the days. I wore it till the neck separated from the t-shirt itself!
He was my very favorite band member!
The guys in Maiden wear their own shirts, I don’t see a reason why Jason couldn’t either.
0:32 For me the iconic Newsted T-shirt
Always was the soul of that band when he was a part of it. Love ya Jason 🤟🏻
Plus they were free. Super down to earth cool guy.
him wearing those shirts singlehandedly got Metallica where they are today.
I miss Jason, he was such an underrated and underutilized part of Metallica. In my own opinion James and Lars feared Jason overshading Cliff's memory and their own talent. So they kept him on a tight leash but if they would have unleashed Jason, I believe Metallica's music would have been so much better.
This guy is the shit. Rob is good and all that, but Jason has his place forever. Metallica.
Jason was the best!!
Jason is more Metallica than Metallica themselves.
Proudly flew those colours bro!
Wow, didn't expect to hear Jason Isbell mentionned here, if you don't know who that is, go find out ! It is so much worth it
He even turned down his bass so we could hear the drummer 😩😵
😆
Also Lars in white ’tallica in the music video for One had a huge impact, alongside Jason’s twin skulls, on us kids.
my mom bought me the Sad But True shirt in 1992. I still have it.
When is this from?
Ive seen Jason Live and I've seen Rob. Jason was a way better back up 100%
They should've treasured Jason
Wow he mentions Jason Isbell pretty awesome
He was really fun to watch.
Watch any of the old concert vids when cliff was still alive, James was the one in Metallica shirts
always love when he wear sad but true shirt
Memorial
I remember I always wanted that Violence shirt he had, but never found it, recently I got a SOAD one that looks almost the same, and that's enough to me
Newstead was in Metallica at their height when you think about it. Metallica’s “best music” is up for debate (I say no) but Newstead was in Metallica during their most “successful” years. He joined them right before their most first successful album (…And Justice, then the black album) and left right before their biggest turd (St. Anger).
I hope he was compensated appropriately, ‘cause he deserves it.
The best shirt Metallica ever made was when they were on AJFA tour. It was black, had all 4 albums on the front with a picture of each of them by one of the albums and tour dates on back. The other was same tour but lady Justice on the front and tour dates in green such a killer live show
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
He was awesome and he got a raw deal his band that he had no say
This is what James would find annoying of Jason. He joined the band being a huge fan and for some reason this bothered James. I think it was cool Jason was serious and an utmost professional about his role. He also gave them a huge stage presence.
James is a jerk!
Respect.
I was more interested in who Jason Isbell was. Then I realized he's from the Drive by Truckers. I saw them in 02
I swear looking back. And looking at now..I think I'd rather have Jason.
I also seen him wear a Vio-lence and Destruction T-shirt
Kind of a no-brainer when you know that the band makes a lot of their money on tour selling fucking t-shirts. Yeah I'd wear a t-shirt on stage too. That's a big advertisement for your band's product. And.... Metallica T-shirts were pretty damn cool looking too. (If you were into that sort of thing)
we all had that tee in 90s
“I got plans for those millions and it ain’t for F**king sandwiches” - Jason Newstead
This comment is massively underrated. Well done.
That comment may well have been the highlight of the Live Shit: Binge & Purge VHS boxset...
He even made us want a capt krunch shirt after the 89 Grammy debacle.
I always kind of wondered if it wasn't because it was written in somewhere within his contractual agreement when he joined the band.
GOAT. ❤🤘
And it totally worked. Everyone wanted to wear the Sad But True t-shirt.
Very intense guy.
