Ok so I made my own pot today using everything he mentioned in this video.....I boiled my chicken first then added along with everything else together in the crockpot. That was some good eating! This guy was a treasure, never delete this video
Hey Rachelle ….. so glad you liked my video. I’ve done the same thing in a crock pot and it has turned out well but never as good as what Mr. Morris and others back in southern Virginia did. I’m told some old timers back around Emporia still do it in the fall of the year but I’m never around when they do it. I did this interview around fifty years ago. I live in Illinois and I’ll probably never have real chicken muddle again. Makes me kinda sad. Thanks again …..
Great video!!! Hearing from an "Old-Timer" years ago, who learned it from "Old-Timers" years and years ago. I grew up with Stew less than an hour from Emporia. Never had Muddle. Now I've got to try using Mr. Morris' recipe.
I've never had chicken muddle but we do make chicken mull where I live which is similar but without the tomatoes and butterbeans. Thanks so much to whoever had the foresight to record this for posterity. People like that gentlemen are treasures whose genius needs to be saved for future generations.
America, never loose this,, please never loose this,,,,, the foundation, of the best of the best,,, never forget where we came from, such goodness here,, thank you for posting, thank you kodi
Wow... so glad to find this video. I grew up in nearby Capron, VA. Stuart Starke cooked great muddle once or twice a year. People would order ahead and he always sold out. I never met Mr. Morris so this video was sweet. Thanks for sharing. And yes.... chicken muddle is not Brunswick stew! ;)
thank you for posting this.he said he cut his stick in "72" I was 2 then. This is golden to our history. maybe instead of pepsi, we need to come together and make a big pot of Chicken Muddle.
Hello Mr. Morris. If you are the grandson, we would love to speak with you. We are a food publication out of Virginia and currently working on an article about chicken muddle.
My family is from Emporia VA. and I love Chicken Muddle! it is by far the best soup/mixture I have ever eaten! where abouts in Emporia was this video taken? Please get back in touch because I would love to learn more! I wish there were more of these type of people in the world! He seems like a wonderful man!
Hey neighbor! I grew up in Capron. Do you remember Stuart Starke? He cooked chicken muddle every year and as a kid I was amazed to watch him cook it all day long! Big black pot using a short wooden boat paddle to stir. It was awesome and he sold out every year.
I can only seem to get this from my people in Emporia once a year, Oct/Nov. They make a big pot outside then package/freeze them up for sale (or whatever). Once gone....it's gone
5# chicken, bacon, 2# potatoes, a quart each of onions, butterbeans, tomatoes(whole canned), corn, salt, black and red pepper, and what's that secret ingredient? Paprika?
I LIVED IN EMPORIA 4 YEARS, BEST MUDDLES EVER, 4GOT 2 MENTION POTATOES, I PEELED MY SHARE OF ONIONS & POTATOES, GOT ALL GALLON CANS OF VEGETABLES FROM SPIVEYS MARKET, SWEET MEMORIES!😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
@@bnr540 My family is from Emporia and I remember my grandmother getting the BEST country ham from Spivey's every Christmas. I might have to make a trip up there this year for it.
Be aware...muddle is NOT brunswick stew. It's a far site better. And even better yet if you use squirrel and rabbit. That's what we used growing up. But unless you have a bunch of folks hunting for a few days it's hard to get enough game. Then you have to settle for chicken. And home cured bacon is what you want. Not that stuff from the meat packers.
I love ol Virginia fellas like this man. I could listen to this man talk all day long. Love the video.

@@SouthernGritMagazine Has the article been written? I think I might know some people who can help if Cliff didn't reach out.
I miss Emporia! This makes me too happy. Gonna try to make chicken muddle here in Florida on the stove... it won't be the same, but it's worth a shot.
Love this nostalgic historical gem from Geensville County!

Any idea where Edgar's pots are now? They should be in a museum.
Don’t have a clue but you might look for a family member around Emporia. Sorry …. Thanks for watching it and thanks for your comment.
