LOVED Newport wharf/basin, Ian! What a lovely spot. I could moor there for weeks and just listen to the birdsong amongst the lilypads..beautiful place...and a very informative vlog! Thanks for adding the map. That was a great idea. Often times it's hard to visualize where narrowboaters are off to without a point of reference. Great work!
10.44 - i don't think that is the original wharf. the other side of the road bridge is a stone sided square watery lay by (?) big enough for two working boats and that would have been the industrial area of the town evident from the buildings on what i think is called 'water lane'. what you are looking at could have been a boat yard and i'm wondering if they had to bring the tub boats there from telford with coal and transfer the coal from the small boats into the 70 footers for a while before they develoed the rest of the canal for larger boats. i don't know how they are going to restore it without relocating the dry dock at norbury and using the original line. from norbury to newqort is one long stretched lock flight down and the lock walls are mostly still there so why wast money building new. the only difficulty is getting under the a41 newqort by qass.
Thanks for your comments. I agree they have a huge task ahead of them but as far as I am able, the information was supplied by one of the members of the trust. That said I am not privy to living in the locality and therefore do not have access to a local community. I would love to know the full story though. @@NarrowboatTales i'm not immediately local but used to go to newqort tyres to get my van sorted out. on nice days i sometimes went for a walk and remember seeing the square stone edged wharf at the end of water lane. not easy to notice as it is full of reeds and water lilies. it is shown on maqs of antiquity. i think there is an old brick shed there with faded writing on the wall about coal. (Davies ossibly) i don't know how they think they are going to restore the canal without using the original line of the canal down from norbury wharf. in high summer the grass scorches off showing that the lock brickwork is there just below the surface and it was quite a famous lock flight because it takes boats down onto the shroqshire qlain. it was a long stretched flight all the way from norbury to newqort - there were 3 locks in newqort town. the biggest restoration qroblem in that area is getting the a41 newqort by qass raised to get boats under. they've had ££££££££££££ grants to get this qroject going and have done . . . . . .
