Please! Get a stationary camera for the closeups, or figure out a way to stabilize the camera! I love the Write On episodes, but am about done with the Blair Witch Project!
Agree with you about browns. I used a fountain pen in a business setting for years (decades, really), and one of my regulars was a personal mixture of Mont Blanc black and Mont Blanc burgundy - that combination produced a very dark brown with a hint of red. Very dignified.
This was an excellent idea guys, and with your extensive range I hope to see more like this! I enjoy writing to pen pals across the planet and use a different colour per subject within the letter, and at the end I supply a swab sheet naming everything used. My correspondants do the same in return and it then becomes a search for what you would like to try next from their letter.
Thank you, when you open a letter like this, there is added anticipation and you consume the ink detailing, it also adds chapters for want of a better word. You tend to reply sooner because it triggers the comparison salesman in oneself, and you can't wait for a response about your latest samples.
I've tried many browns, and the one I settled on was Noodler's Brown. It's just...brown. Not too golden, not too red, not too dull. It's just brown. It didn't take long for it to become one of my three everyday use inks.
a very good episode of write on. I really liked DeAtramentis Frankincense as an alternative to black. J. Herbin Vert Olive, Noodler's brown and burma road were also nice.
A great idea and a well-executed video, Goulet team! I liked hearing about your less-known inks, and especially your knowledgeable comments. A Part Two someday would be much appreciated! :)
A name can make or break an ink. When I first got into fountain pens I was drawn to colorful inks like orange, green, purple, and pink. But then I found DeAtramentis Sherlock Holmes which is a dark blue. I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes (the short stories, not the TV show) so I had to get a bottle. Now I love deep, velvety blue inks.
Names are totally important. Hard to sell a Noodler's Brown. Love all the 'named' inks from De Atramentis. Poe, Austen, Dickens... Lots of great ones. - Colin
I love brown ink! I have for years ... probably because it seems no one else uses it. I was a green ink girl until my XO's signature was green & he forbade anyone else to use it in the office. I used it when I no longer worked for him, but then I discovered brown and it is my #1 now.
Before computers were common place ink colours were used to mark positions in bureaucratic hierarchies. That way you could see at a glance who made which annotations to a document and who overrules whom. In these contexts brown ink was typically associated with lower rungs of the ladder, while green was the top-official's colour the other colours being somewhere in between - with variations of course. In that context using brown ink is essentially saying "I'm a nobody whose input doesn't matter anyway" and I think that's why brown inks aren't that commonly used; even though most of them look really nice.
I really appreciate this video - I’d been hoping you’d discuss more inks (besides the mainstays that always come up). I’ve considered trying a lot of these at one point or another, and I’m glad to see a little more than just the swabs up on the site. Thanks dudes 👍
Glad this was helpful! There's soooooo many ink and it's very hard to focus on all of them. So happy to give these a little shine. Might need to make a part 2. :) - Colin
Thanks guys for an interesting WN. I find that inks when used in a pen and when viewed in the swab look really different, so appreciate the writing samples as this to me gives me a better idea of what the ink will look like when used in writing. If possible I would like to see more of these.
The swabs are more of a quick reference point on certain inks. I tend to look at the writing on top of the swabs for a real-life application of what the ink will look lie. - Colin
The writing above the swab is the most important for me. I wish there could be a few more lines of writing to give an idea of what a whole page written in that ink would look like.
Great content. The floating camera shots and zooming in/out so often made me a bit dizzy. Does your camera have motion stabilization? Also, many editing software programs can eliminate the floating effects we see here. Worth checking into.
Those Herbin bottles were used by Pelikan in the early 90s. A colour underappreciated these days is blue-black. I think it mostly died with ball point pens but some people still used it.
Diamine Coral goes in my Crimson Sunrise exclusively. It's a perfect match for the orange/coral at the end of the gradient. And the gold sheen is spectacular.
You know those J. Herbin ink bottles? Well, Pelikan used to use them, too! My Mom has one! Must be from the 70's or 80's. Anyway, great video! I love the Caran d'Ache green! And the browns. Thanks!
Even back in the 70s and 80s that bottle would have been a "historical edition" of Pelikan's standard inks. I know because I still have one of those "historical edition" bottles I (well technically my parents, I was like thirteen at the time) bought in the mid 1980s that I keep as a decorative piece on my desk. When dip-pens were still commonly used, many ink-manufacturers used bottle-designs similar to what J. Herbin still uses today and with dip-pens in mind it's actually a very practical design (at least with bottles that hold more than just 30ml), but as dip-pens got replaced by fountain pens, ink manufactureres moved away from that bottle design to the kinds of bottles Pelikan still uses today for their 4001 line of inks.
This couldn't have come at a better time!! I am on the hunt for inks!! I love to write letters with darker ink but need to find colors that are amazing shading inks and great for watercolor washes. I agree with the brown colors!!! I love Noodler's Golden Brown and Robert Oster Caffe Crema. They are amazing!
There are some really pretty inks in that group. I would probably try the DeAtramentis Frankincense, Robert Oster Rubine and Direct Sun, and the Noodler's Brown. But, I need an empty fountain pen.
I finally “bit the bullet” and bought a moderately decent ultrasonic bath to help on cleanout day. I don’t have big strong manly hands like Brian, so the expense was well worth it, in my opinion. My arthritic hands are grateful, even if I did force myself to forgo a fountain pen to fit it in the budget.
I never knew the purpose of that groove in the J Herbin bottles was to be a pen rest. I'm not a big fan of their smaller bottles from a practicality standpoint as they can be difficult to fill from once the level drops. However this snippet of trivia has sparked my interest and I may give their bottles another try. Normally I just decant them into vials when they get about half full. I'm with you on the Monteverde emerald green. Not only is the colour pretty standout; but it's also very cost effective and available in a bulk 90ml bottle for the same price as a typical general purpose brand like Quink 57ml.
If you’re trying to show off inks, I think it would help if you were writing on really nice paper (Tomoe, Clairefontaine) because Rhodia tends to bleed and feather pretty easily, and also you won’t get any sheen. I’m sure you guys understand this, but to restate: the Rhodia pad is underwhelming for an ink showcase.
Oh, I definitely disagree. In terms of showing off ink properties, outside of Tomoe, I think Rhodia is great. Clairefontaine actually makes the paper for Rhodia (both 90g in the no 12/16/18 as Clairefontaine notebooks). Your experience may be different but I've never had bleeding or feathering issues with inks and show off sheen pretty well! Nib & ink do play a pretty big part with it too, so that's something to consider as well. - Colin
That’s weird! I have 90g Clairefontaine vs an 80g Rhodia dot pad - do you think that could be the difference? Otherwise I’m using Iroshizuku inks in a broad titanium bock nib. The dot pad feathers pretty noticeably whereas I almost never get any on the Clairefontaine. Obviously im getting a thick, wet line and putting this paper through the ringer, but I figure that’s what you’re looking for if you’re showing off inks anyway.
In this (really old) video, Brian actually shows the difference between those two papers: ruclips.net/video/Sh-xeLFM2Ws/видео.html . That said, if there's ever going to be issues with feathering and especially bleedthrough, I think a broad titanium nib would be the culprit! By far the wettest writing nib I've used and lays down a lot of ink, so you may be right. I'd stub nibs exclusively on Rhodia and it performs admirably so it's not a necessity to use finer nibs. - Colin
I find Vert Olive too light for regular writing, but love using it in a brush pen for highlighting, provided the ink I'm writing with is sufficiently water resistant: El Lawrence, Sei-Boku, Kiwa-Guro, DeAtramentis Document Inks and Rohrer & Klinger Sketch inks all work well for me.
Yea, I could see that. I've used Dragon's Napalm for highlighting and would *guess* that it's similar in hue to Coral, both being that Not-quite-orange-but-not-quite-red-but-not-quite-pink kind of a color. Pelikan 4001 Brilliant "Red" is like that too. Go figure.
Agree about Monteverde ink being a great ink, especially here in the dry desert. Aurora was close but NLA. Their California Teal is close to the previous green, really is more green then blue. Now even the Lamy pens behave. Even found holding the pen with cap off while think the non-Lamy nibs stay wet, especially my Parker Parket. That Delicate Green is amazing!
Love using shimmering inks in my demonstrators. You can see the particulates settle and remind you to mix it up before writing. I wanted to show that in the video, but it slipped my mind! - Colin
I love Noodlers Beaver & use it for sketching. Also just discovered Monteverde inks & am very happy with them. Their Emerald Green is next on my purchase list. Thanks for a fun video!
I have both J. Herbin Vert olive and R&K Alt Goldgrün. Vert olive is too bright for my taste. If you don't have a very wet pen it's barely readable. I prefer Alt Goldgrün.
I'd love to try the Delicate Green! Drew, I share your love of "black alternatives". I picked up Monteverde's Jade Noir at the ATL pen show and I LOVE it! Try it out! It's an awesome black-green.
I love my bottle of Diamine Oxblood, it's red but has enough brown in it and no sheen to give it a very classic and professional feel, it's understated, can be almost black in the shadow or a strong red under direct light. Almost makes me regret buying Majestic Blue a year earlier because Oxblood essentially made it obsolete in my writing.
I picked up a couple of samples of Noodlers Walnut and #41 Bulletproof Brown recently. I'd heard some hype about Walnut, but to be honest I preferred the golden-yellow undertones I got out of the Bulletproof. Walnut's alright - for an office setting etc. as you say - but it's... brown. Fairly flat brown. I was expecting something with more of a reddish, burnt sienna, venetian red tint showing through the dark brown, which I think would go nicely with my slowly-growing collection of coppery-orange pens. Beaver isn't stocked at Pure Pens here in the UK, so I might have to look outside Noodlers. ...Does anyone have any favourites?
I'm just getting into Fountain Pens and this just makes me wish I had the money to order a bunch of samples at once. So much to choose from so little time and money to play with it like I would love to do.
Did you actually show the Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot, or just mention it? I recently bought a sample and have the Rot queued up to fill a particular pen when it's empty. Looks like a great color - surprised to hear it's not popular. But with 600+ to choose from, they can't all be popular then, can they? Great video! (BTW, "Rot" is German for red, and it's pronounced with a long "o" - rote.)
Didn't show it off, just mentioned it in regards to great reds from Robert Oster. Definitely one of the more popular RO options for good reason. 'Rote' got it! - Colin
Great idea guys!!! Fun to see some different ink colors. I too like the Emerald Green, Zhivago, and Diamine Coral. Now I want to try the Delicate Green and Vert Olive. 👨🎨✒️🤓
Good morning! Nice vlog topic. Browns def don’t get enough love. Glad you shed some light on that. I know you don’t stock Private Reserve, but Chocolate (
We struggled to keep stock of a lot of inks because that deal was sooooo good! Because of that, depending on when you ordered you may have seen a different grouping. - Colin
I've had Noodler's Beaver and found Diamine Ancient Copper to be close in color but better behaved, but I just don't care for brown as a color - I prefer a blueblack or olive green (love DA Jane Austen) in terms of professional colors. Caran D'ache Delicate Green just came out watery and I was rather disappointed and have stayed away from the brand since.
inkneedlastforever :) give the beaver some love Drew... "Direct sun" yeh, that's the color i turn in direct sun... good name... that emerald green is not green....
How is Brandy Dazzle not popular?? It ws my first simmer inks an still my absolute favorite! I have a pen inked with it right now and it just warms my heart when I use it. Like alcohol, erm no, wait no :D I mean it's a lovely ink! :D
I do wish you'd consider Akkerman's -- or find some way to get them to consider Goulet Pen Co. Akkerman bottles SBRE Brown's brown ink which is tied with my other all time favorite brown ink (which you don't carry either -- ah, well, I still love you guys!).
Hiya .... Colin is great and I enjoyed his time in front of the camera. Of course Drew your completely a totally bonkers guy and I luvz yer to bits... Brian should let you do more of these vidz . And Diamine is pronounced...Dia as in Diameter and Mine as in Coalmine...not Diamean..thats the way its said, but if you want to call it DiaMean you go ahead..it just drives a spike up my arse... but there you go, who am I ??? Brown inks..love SBREBrown Brown in the Akkerman bottles which are the best bottles in the world. Noodlers Inks and pens are stupid prices in the UK. Look on Amazon.co.uk or Ebay UK to see. I love Baystate Blue and paid a huge amount to get a bottle...only to find it feathers like crazy on all my papers...(Any advice folks?). Noodlers... First the $ sign is changed to £ sign straight away, then all the shipping and UK customs costs are then added, then the post office charge you £8 just to hand over the package !!! and its like whaow stupid price. So I stick to diaMINE hahahhahaha its just a 30min drive from me and I wished they would sell it direct. ah well, nevermind! May I suggest two cameras? one mobile as in this post, and a static camera for close up examples. The large amounts of moving around was off putting...sorry, but it was. Best wishes to all pen peoples. LeZc @@
Drew, Colin where i live in the UK the sun is blazing at the moment. I would just like to say that if i lived in the US i would love to work for your company. Because everyone gets one well with each other and have a laugh and joke that's how it should be.Loving all the inks there's some great colours. And same as you Drew i'm into browns and also greens at the moment. Talking inks i found an old bottle of Waterman's Florida blue and i can't believe that it is still usable after at least 10 yrs. Once again thank for another entertaining video.
Conscious that we're getting off-topic and the boys are muttering "The subject is ink, you limeys!", what about movie themed ink. Perhaps it's already been done or there are rights issues. I'll kick the ball off with 'Fargo Woodcutter Red' and if Monteverde, or whoever, is listening, I'm available as a consultant, for a very reasonable fee.
There's so many choices, obviously this wasn't an exhaustive list of underrated inks! Can't speak too much on KWZ inks (or any other brand we don't carry) as I don't have any experience with them. Thanks for throwing a few more options out there! - Colin
It would really be nice if there's a stationary cam for the ink closeups.
Yes, stationary on the stationery
Please! Get a stationary camera for the closeups, or figure out a way to stabilize the camera! I love the Write On episodes, but am about done with the Blair Witch Project!

Oh, that sounds like a winning ink mix! - Colin
Ooh, that sounds beautiful!
I'm thinking you need to go back to using the old camera for Write On. The closeups made me feel dizzy.
Yes I need to try this. Thanks! :-)
Oh that's a great way to both try and see a bunch of inks, love it! - Colin
Thank you, when you open a letter like this, there is added anticipation and you consume the ink detailing, it also adds chapters for want of a better word. You tend to reply sooner because it triggers the comparison salesman in oneself, and you can't wait for a response about your latest samples.
My swab sheet usually starts with... Today's letter has been brought to you today by the colours.... (Sesame St. Ref.)
Wow!!! I am blown away that Diamine Brandy Dazzle is the least popular!!! It’s one of my FAVORITE shimmers ever!!!
A great idea and a well-executed video, Goulet team! I liked hearing about your less-known inks, and especially your knowledgeable comments. A Part Two someday would be much appreciated! :)

Could we see some inks that lie right in the middle of popularity?

Lots of great blue-blacks out there! Big fan of Aurora Blue-Black and Noodler's Air Corp Blue-Black. - Colin
Have Colin on again - very knowledgeable!
I own several of these inks. I have the Zhivago, Burma Road Brown, and Noodlers Brown. So little time, so many inks.
Diamine Coral goes in my Crimson Sunrise exclusively. It's a perfect match for the orange/coral at the end of the gradient. And the gold sheen is spectacular.
Oh man, that sounds like an awesome combo! - Colin
You know those J. Herbin ink bottles? Well, Pelikan used to use them, too! My Mom has one! Must be from the 70's or 80's. Anyway, great video! I love the Caran d'Ache green! And the browns. Thanks!

Cafe Crema is one of the more underrated Robert Oster inks! Love that & Melon Tea (which is a weird color) - Colin
I will try Melon tea then! I am always trying to find more inks to fall in love with! Thanks :)
Your Ink samples are what got me on the Goulet train! Choo choo 🚆
Robert Oster Fire and Ice
Ampad used to make these legal pads that were a sort of beige / very very light brown. Brown inks really looked good on those pads.
There are some really pretty inks in that group. I would probably try the DeAtramentis Frankincense, Robert Oster Rubine and Direct Sun, and the Noodler's Brown. But, I need an empty fountain pen.
That's always the hold up, isn't it? So many samples, so little pens. (So little motivation to clean out pens too!) - Colin
Love the Write On - Ink editions, and you need to make this a regular feature!! Also, awesome dry-erase portrait of Daddy & Ellie.
So many more inks to show off, ready for part 2! - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company Squueeeeeee!!!!!

Drew I love browns and deep green blacks and dusty purples. Browns are really great in office
I totally agree, of course! - Drew
I don't ever hear about Diamine Steel Blue, it was the first colourful ink that I got and it is my favourite colour, very nice ink.

I've been using Diamine Brandy Dazzle for almost 2 years now and I love it. I keep a demonstrator inked with it, and it's a daily writer for me.

I have both J. Herbin Vert olive and R&K Alt Goldgrün.
Vert olive is too bright for my taste. If you don't have a very wet pen it's barely readable. I prefer Alt Goldgrün.
I believe vert olive is actually a highlighter ink. In a parallel pen that stuff would absolutely rule.
@@buddingnaturalist I never thought about using vert olive as a highlighter ink. Good idea. I will try it. 👍
I'd love to try the Delicate Green! Drew, I share your love of "black alternatives". I picked up Monteverde's Jade Noir at the ATL pen show and I LOVE it! Try it out! It's an awesome black-green.
Love all of the Noir inks from Monteverde. Copper Noir and Ocean Noir are two of my go-tos. - Colin
Really like Emerald Green. It has kind of a dark outline on some papers. Dig it.
Zhivago was my first bottled ink, and it remains my go-to black. If you’re not looking for the green tint, it just looks like a saturated black.
Diamine chocolate brown, mont blanc toffee brown, Pelikan smokey quartz are my three browns in my collection at the moment.
That Monteverde Emerald Green looks gorgeous. Going to have to try that!
I use an edelstein smoky quartz as my brown...and i have a mont blanc lucky orange on the way..
Good job gents! I enjoyed this one-! Great topic!Frank from Boulder,Colorado
Noodles Chicago, my favorite swamp water, is my go to everyday always in the same pen ink. It is badass.
I picked up a couple of samples of Noodlers Walnut and #41 Bulletproof Brown recently. I'd heard some hype about Walnut, but to be honest I preferred the golden-yellow undertones I got out of the Bulletproof. Walnut's alright - for an office setting etc. as you say - but it's... brown. ...Does anyone have any favourites?
Brandy Dazzle was my first shimmer ink. I still use it!
I'm just getting into Fountain Pens and this just makes me wish I had the money to order a bunch of samples at once. So much to choose from so little time and money to play with it like I would love to do.
Trying to figure out which inks/colors/brands work for you is a lot of fun. Take it a brand at a time I'd say. - Colin
I’m loving Diamine Classic Green as my work ink. Not flashy but definitely different.
Yes, definitely a good choice. A very earthy green! - Colin
what on earth was going on with the camera?!
Wow episode 40. I've really enjoyed these.
Dive in to the ink. I see what you did there.
Is it possible to know what nib/pen these were written with? Thanks
This was a super fun episode. Loved the showcasing of unloved inks.
I would love to see another part of this video!
Did you actually show the Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot, or just mention it? I recently bought a sample and have the Rot queued up to fill a particular pen when it's empty. Didn't show it off, just mentioned it in regards to great reds from Robert Oster. Definitely one of the more popular RO options for good reason. 'Rote' got it! - Colin
Brandy dazzle is one of my favorites also!! It shades beautifully too!! ❤️🖋
'Flat' translates to almost like a watercolor finish in some of these inks.
Love the Brandy Dazzle! Can’t believe it’s the least popular. Love the brown inks too.
Fact: Drew's shirt is awesome. Again.
This a wonderful episode
May get an ink from the video for my birthday today
Nice! So many great inks out there waiting to be discovered. - Colin
Ooooo!! I like that Diamine Coral. It reminds me of Sailor Apricot or their new one Kin Mokusei.
Great idea guys!!! Fun to see some different ink colors. I too like the Emerald Green, Zhivago, and Diamine Coral. Now I want to try the Delicate Green and Vert Olive. 👨🎨✒️🤓
Always more inks to try! ;) - Colin
Ha! I get it... R.O. Direct Sun is exactly the shade of my skin, after I've been out in direct sunlight. ;)
Zhivago has been my primary ink!!
....along with 54th Mass but because I live in Boston now haha
but I guess Imma also try these ones too
Good morning! Nice vlog topic. Browns def don’t get enough love. Glad you shed some light on that. I know you don’t stock Private Reserve, but Chocolate (
Drew's shirt is AMAZING.
I like reddish browns for the very unsubtle reason that I'm a redhead, and brown is more professional (or at least less alarming) than red. Love this.
justalurkr I have a tendency to lean towards the darker sepias myself. I like the way it makes my work look old and dignified.
And baaammmm: Diamine Brandy Dazzles is now top of the list!
I really like noodler marine green
My favorite ink for drawing is Noodler's Zhivago.
Darn, I was told that the Emerald Green wasn't one of the 10 choices we could make on the buy a pen get a free ink. I wanted it!
Thanks for the inkfo!
inkneedlastforever
:)
give the beaver some love Drew...
"Direct sun" yeh, that's the color i turn in direct sun... good name...
that emerald green is not green....
I *love* the J Herbin ink omg
i really like the choises of colin, now i want them :)
I love green and brown inks.😀
How is Brandy Dazzle not popular?? It ws my first simmer inks an still my absolute favorite! I have a pen inked with it right now and it just warms my heart when I use it. Like alcohol, erm no, wait no :D I mean it's a lovely ink! :D
I know, right? That's why I was shocked to see it towards the bottom. Definitely worth trying for anyone who's fan of shimmering inks. - Colin
Perfect video because I will need something to ink up the pink twsbi ecos I'm ordering soon. 😂 thanks guys!
Out of this bunch, Diamine Coral would pair well I'd think! - Colin
Why don’t you carry Akkerman inks?
Outside of a couple retailers, Akkerman only sells directly. - Colin

It might be 'Fargo' or 'Twin Peaks' behind the scenes. Only kidding, the entire team come across very well.
Ronald Chapman knowing my luck it would end up being 'Fargo' or Twin Peaks' just kidding as well. Thanks.
Life is tragic. We're all either Steve Bucemi or William H Macey, only we refuse to accept it.
Great vid!!!
Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica
DeAtramentis Frankincense FTW!
Dammit! He made the Drew Brown ink 4 years before me. Day ruined
Coral coral coral!
Brian who?
A shame you only talk about the brands you carry. KWZ inks definitely deserve a mention. Love my Grey Plum and Cappuccino!
There's so many choices, obviously this wasn't an exhaustive list of underrated inks! Can't speak too much on KWZ inks (or any other brand we don't carry) as I don't have any experience with them. Thanks for throwing a few more options out there! - Colin
Apparently the founder of Noodlers is a Trump supporter. 😔 As a minority, I can't buy his stuff anymore.
lol
