  • If you've been in the fountain pen world for a while, chances are you've come across some of the new shimmering inks. The shimmering fountain pen inks that we carry at Goulet Pens are all regular fountain pen ink with added sparkle for that glittery effect that is incredibly unique.
    Some fountain pen users are hesitant to use this type of ink because they are afraid of damaging their fountain pens. Additionally, there is a lot of misinformation and supposition floating around out there about these inks and their affect on nibs and feeds. We've got good news for you! Since all of this ink is created for fountain pens, it will not damage your pens. You will need to take a bit more care when cleaning them, however, so we'll go into more detail about that below. We want to do a little myth busting in this video, as well as let you in on the secrets to getting the most mileage out of your shimmering fountain pen ink.

    I'm in love with shimmer inks. It's super hard to choose a favorite. I find most my pens work great with them. Even fine nibs. I do roll my pens gently to mix inside the pen. What I like is they have different character per pen and per where the shimmer settles. I'm almost kind of ruined for using regular ink right now. ALL my dailies have shimmer in them.

    I'm actually using a shimmer ink (Diamine Blue Pearl) in my new TWSBI mini AL Blue with a fine nib and it brings me so much joy to be so matchy-matchy that I may need to buy a bottle and just keep it inked up like that. We use laser jet full sheet labels on file folders for some of our internal files & it's so fun to fill them out in shimmer ink. Because I'm a professional adult. 😂

I just got two bottles of shimmering inks, the Diamine Shimmertastic Blue Lightning and the Pink Glitz, and I have to say, shimmering inks are awesome! And then one day I decided to try the shimmer in it - oh my goodness! The color completely changed! I couldn't believe it! Where did this rich deep red color come from! Quickly becoming one of my favs.

    Greetings, Goulet Pens!
    I have recently received samples of several shimmering inks, and while the Diamine Cocoa Shimmer is gorgeous, it really mucked up my TWSBI Swipe. I was careful to rock the pen gently back and forth before each use, and I use this pen several times a day, but it still clogged the feed after a couple of days. After soaking and flushing at least a dozen times, I finally had to take the pen apart and use an old toothbrush to remove all of the glitter from the ebonite feed. I had the same thing happen with Diamine Moondust in my italic Pilot Metropolitan. I have a sample of Diamine Enchanted Ocean that I really want to try, but I'm afraid that I"ll end up with a gummed-up feed once again. I don't have any broad nibs, and all of my pens are on the less expensive side (under $30). My only "flex" pen is the Monteverde Monza (set of three nibs: F, M, & "flex"), but I use the medium nib most of the time. Any ideas about which fountain pen(s) I should use/obtain in order to enjoy shimmer inks more?
    Many thanks,
    Susanne :)

      I picked up a lined "journal" from a book resale shop - the brand says Piccadilly - and was very pleasantly surprised at how well it works (both sides of the paper used) with fountain pen and ink. I've been using it to write letters during lockdown to my family. I've been using Pilot Plumix with a stub nib and filling the cartridge with various sample inks from Goulet. I don't have any shimmers yet, but the Plumix writes fairly wet, so I'm tempted.

    Does the brand of ink used either lessen or increase the likelihood of feathering? I used both my medium-nibbed Pilot Kakuno (Pilot Namiki ink) and Metropolitan (Diamine Marine ink) on U.S. local-bought grid paper. I'm new at fountain pens and always heard that you MUST use fountain pens on good paper for the ink to perform at its very best. The Kakuno showed feathering; the Metro did not. I love knowing that I can use a fountain pen on inferior paper (it's all we use in our office) and not worry about line distortion. Also, Brian (his last name was not given, understandably so) included a Thank You note in my first order from Goulet Pens which was written on a Goulet note card using Diamine Night Sky. Why did he do that?!?! Now, I'm hooked! It adds a special something. It seems to me that he may have used a broad tip. My second question is if I use a Western medium nib (found on the Jinhao, for example) which lays down a broader line and good paper like Tomoe River or Clairefontaine, will I see the shimmer, even if one needs to see the it while looking at the paper from a tilt and not necessarily "head on"?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 лет назад

      Ink definitely plays a part when it comes to feathering or ghosting, some just tend to do it more than others. Look at any reviews before purchasing to see if they noted feathering issues. Diamine usually is a well-behaved option, so I'm not surprised Marine was good for you. As for the western nibs, the broader the better. But using Tomoe River paper will make you see the shimmering for sure! - Colin

I imagine this video will spark a lot of experimentation (which pen, which nib, which paper shows the shimmer) and I was wondering if anyone can comment on which fountain pen shows the color variation and shimmer best at F point or if it is best to go to medium.... Or if it is possible to take neat notes in a tomoe river paper planner with a stub nib (some special technique? Is there a wet writing fountain pen sold with a 0.8 stub nib? I have mostly seen 1.1 mm stubs) ? Anyone have their experiments documented ie pictures of sample shimmer ink writing with different fountain pens posted on the web?

    Hi there, really enjoying your videos. Wonder if you can answer a question for me. I invested in a bottle of emerald of chivor, but wondering if I got a fake or a faulty batch. I have tried it in various pens, dip pens etc. I have made sure it is mixed. I have used it on various papers, from Rhodia to hp premium 32. My ink has no hint of the red/burgundy colour. It has some gold sheen, but other than that is a dark green ink, with a bit of shading... I’m really not that impressed with it at all. Is there something else I might be doing wrong? I’d consider buying another bottle, but at that price I’d hate to see the same thing happen again. Thanks.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  4 года назад

      I've seen very little batch variation issues with the Jacques Herbin line, so I doubt that's the case. That said, the red sheen is hard to come by. Using a stub or broad/double broad nib, Tomoe River paper is usually the best bet to see it. Anything with a finer nib and it just doesn't lay down enough ink to pool in places like that. - Colin

    I am sorry but I didn't catch the name of the ink that you said was your favorite. I am just curious. I must admit to owning several shimmering inks, most are Diamine's Shimmertastics, but I also have Herbin's Anniversary 1670 Emerald of Chivor. I'd say that is my favorite even though it is the weirdest acting ink I've ever seen. I made 2 swatches for it on my Col-O-ring and they are completely different from each other! One shows more green/red/gold and the other swatch leans blues/green/reds/gold. Odd. My second is Diamine's Tropical Glow. My question is, do I have to clean my pen after each use of the shimmer inks? Or can I keep a pen loaded to use at any time? I am afraid of the particulate drying in my nibs. I see that I will be buying your Pen Wash very soon! Currently, I am using the Chivor in a Pilot Elabo pen with a soft nib. I have a Sailor Fude fountain pen with a 55 degree bent nib that I draw with the other Shimmering inks. I do have Tomoe paper but never considered it for writing with the shimmers, I'll be trying that out today! Thank you for your video.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 лет назад +2

      He agreed with you! Emerald of Chivor is Brian's favorite. Very strange ink from blue to green with red sheen and gold shimmer. You don't need to clean out shimmering inks after each use, but definitely flush it out maybe once a week to avoid the drying out particulate. Definitely try Tomoe River paper, it's the best! - Colin

    What is the difference between shimmering inks and sheening inks? Sorry for asking such a basic question, but...I have a couple of bottles of shimmering inks, but none of sheening ing inks.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  7 лет назад +2

      Shimmering inks have actual particles in it (either gold or silver colored flakes) to give that effect. Sheening inks don't have anything like that, they just produce different colored spots when writing. There is some overlap with them though. • @Gouletpens

      I'd actually go with a different paper. Leuchtturm is pretty absorbent so it's tougher to see the shimmering particles in the ink. Tomoe River is definitely the best, but if you're looking for a notebook style similar to Leuchtturm, the Rhodia Webnotebooks are really great options: www.gouletpens.com/rhodia-webnotebooks/c/253 - Colin

      They work well! I wouldn't add any water to it as it basically kills the shimmer aspect of these inks and you'd just be working with the normal color. Also be sure to shake the bottle before using as it does settle at the bottom. - Colin
